Slow & Complicated Update

Mar 22, 1999

I have the following stored procedure that I use for an update. The table now has just over two million rows and the stored procedure takes days to run. I am looking for any help that would produce the same results faster. This runs on SQL Server 6.5, on an NT machine with 4 pentium pro 200 processors and 512 MB of RAM so I am relatively sure that the performance issue is in the below statement.

UPDATE PAY_CHECK_DETAILS
SET JobID = j.JobID
,HROrganizationID = j.HROrganizationID
,JobDetailID = j.JobDetailID
,GLAccountNumber = j.GLAccountNumber
FROM JOBS j, PAY_CHECK_DETAILS p
WHERE j.EmployeeID = p.EmployeeID
AND j.HRActionEffectiveDate =
(SELECT max(HRActionEffectiveDate)
FROM JOBS jj
WHERE p.EmployeeID = jj.EmployeeID
AND jj.HRActionEffectiveDate <= p.PayDate)

AND j.HRActionSequence =
(SELECT max(HRActionSequence)
FROM JOBS jjj
WHERE p.EmployeeID = jjj.EmployeeID
AND jjj.HRActionEffectiveDate =
(SELECT max(HRActionEffectiveDate)
FROM JOBS jjjj
WHERE p.EmployeeID = jjjj.EmployeeID
AND jjjj.HRActionEffectiveDate <= p.PayDate))
AND NOT (ISNULL(p.JobID,1) = ISNULL(j.JobID,1)
AND ISNULL(p.HROrganizationID,'A') = ISNULL(j.HROrganizationID,'A')
AND ISNULL(p.JobDetailID,1) = ISNULL(j.JobDetailID,1)
AND ISNULL(p.GLAccountNumber,'A') = ISNULL(j.GLAccountNumber,'A'))

Thanks for any help or suggestions you have.

Update With Complicated Join

Mar 4, 2008

I have the table tbOld with columns as fieldID (PK), Class, Name, other1, other2, other3 and tbNew with the same structure (fieldID (PK), Class, Name, other1, other2, other3).
Most Class-Name combinations are the same in both tables but have different FieldID, others are only in the 'tbNew' and absent in the tbOld, some are only in the 'tbOld' but we are not interested in those.
We need to update data in tbNew for columns other1, other2, other3 and make them the same as in tbOld where possible (where class-Name combination is present in the tbOld)
The update statement based on the join on two columns does not work (both columns are not PK, as FieldID is PK in each table, but we can't join on it)
Any help is highly appreciated.

Complicated Question About Update Procedures

Aug 25, 2005

My company works with a fairly large database that needs to be kept live.

My problem is that we need a method of updating the database without messing the data, or crashing the website.

I am sure this is a common problem with a number of solutions. Could
anyone please direct me to a good article on the best practices for
updating databases like this?

Slow Update

Jan 18, 1999

UPDATE TABLE SET FIELD1=NULL WHERE FIELD2=something - is running veryvery slow. Table has 200 000 recors and on FIELD2 is index.
If number of records to be updated is about 40 000, it takes about 3-4 hours.

I tried this:
- create a new MSSQL DB.
- migration of TABLE from original databes to new test DB
- So, in new DB was only one table, with 200 000 records. Index was only on FIELD2.
- I ran that update and it takes about 3-4 hours

I tried that on Interbase and update takes under ONE SECOND!!!!!!!

Thanks for some notices

Slow Database Update

Nov 23, 2007

I have designed a 22 table database in sql server that is to act as a backup/alternate access to the data we have stored in an ADABAS database. I've also written a vb.net console program that will take data from ADABAS through a broker connection (one row at a time), checks the sql server database to see if that information is already stored, and then either performs an insert or an update.

I can write the rows from ADABAS to a text file (not using the broker), at the rate of about 1.3 million rows in 1.3 hours. Data can be imported (I'm not sure how this import is done, possibly via a CSV file. SELECTS/UPDATES are not done, just INSERTS) at about 1 million or so an hour. But when I do the update, receiving information via the broker from ADABAS to the VB program (with it's SELECT, then UPDATE/INSERT), I'm only doing about 20-25 thousand rows an hour.

I ran a trace using the SQL Server Analyzer on the database while running the update program, and then ran Profiler using the generated workload. It created a few indices, but I just restarted the update program (I'm still developing, so I delete all rows from all tables each time I rerun the update), but I haven't seen that it's really any faster.

I have a rather large set of data to transfer over, and this 20-25 thousand row time is not nearly fast enough.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Insert/Update Too Slow

Sep 9, 2007

Hi,

I have a table with 110 nvarchar (255) columns in the database. I receive the data from the server (array) and them loop through it to insert the data into the database. The problem is it takes more than 3 minutes to insert (or update) (in memory) the 310 records it got from the array. I am reusing the Statement (with parameters). How could I improve the performance?

It's really a small quantity of data, the CPU in the device is 520Mhz... it should be alright!

Can aynone help me please?

Update Query Running Very Slow

Apr 17, 2008

Hi all,

I'm having what you might call an optimisation issue - but I'm also not sure if my approach to this problem is right. I've spent the whole day trying various methods but none seem to be performing as admirably as I'd hoped.

Basically, here's the scenario:

1. Log files are being inserted into a SQL table via Log Parser 2.2.
2. I have a lookup table of ip address ranges to countries and other geographic data.
3. Once the log row has been inserted from Log Parser, I want to update the same log table with data from the lookup table.

The main problem seems to be the updating (the initial insert from Log Parser is lightning quick).

I initially wrote a trigger on AFTER INSERT on the log table that converted the actual user's IP address into IPNumber format using a simple algorithm, then pumped the IPNumber into a quick select query which retrieved the geolocation data. Then, in the same trigger, there was an update statement which basically said:

update dbo.Logs
set [Country] = @Country
where [IpNumber] = @IpNumber and [Country] = Null

Therein lies the problem. The update statement slows everything down to almost a standstill and also seems to obtain a lock on the table.

Critical factors:

1. The log table must remain readable.
2. The query must execute in seconds -- not over half hour :)

I've experimented with various combinations of indexing, so far to no avail.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Update In SQL Server 2000 Slow?

Jul 20, 2005

I have two tables:T1 : Key as bigint, Data as char(20) - size: 61M recordsT2 : Key as bigint, Data as char(20) - size: 5M recordsT2 is the smaller, with 5 million records.They both have clustered indexes on Key.I want to do:update T1 set Data = T2.Datafrom T2where T2.Key = T1.KeyThe goal is to match Key values, and only update the data field of T1if they match. SQL server seems to optimize this query fairly well,doing an inner merge join on the Key fields, however, it then does aHash match to get the data fields and this is taking FOREVER. Ittakes something like 40 mins to do the above query, where it seems tome, the data could be updated much more efficiently. I would expectto see just a merge and update, like I would see in the followingquery:update T1 set Data = [someconstantdata]from T2where T2.Key = T1.Key and T2.Data = [someconstantdata]The above works VERY quickly, and if I were to perform the above query5 mil times(assuming that my data is completely unique in T2 and Iwould need to) it would finish very quickly, much sooner than theprevious query. Why won't SQL server just match these up while it ismerging the data and update in one step? Can I make it do this? If Iextracted the data in sorted order into a flat file, I could write aprogram in ten minutes to merge the two tables, and update in onestep, and it would fly through this, but I imagine that SQL server iscapable of doing it, and I am just missing it.Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Slow Update With A Linked Server

Table Variable With Update Slow

May 30, 2007

Hi

I have an update query that joins with 2 table variables. this update updates about 50,000 rows in a table.

update table1

from @table2 t2

inner join @table3 t3

on t2.id = t3.id

where table1.id = t2.id

the problem is that sometimes this update takes forever. If I replace the table variable with regular tables, it only takes about 11 seconds.

I am not sure what the problem is. Could this be a problem with the tempdb. What should I be looking for in the tempdb that might cause a problem.

Slow UPDATE - Running For 16 Hours And Counting...

Jun 7, 2004

The following basic UPDATE SQL statement has been running for 16 hours and counting. I need to get this done ASAP.

UPDATE Recipients SET UndeliverableTime = getdate()
FROM Recipients
INNER JOIN Domains ON (Recipients.DomainID = Domains.ID)
INNER JOIN Undeliverables ON (
Recipients.UserName + '@' + Domains.Domain =
Undeliverables.EmailAddress)

Is there any way I can see how far this has gone and how long it will take to finish? Will this take another hour to finish or another week?

Both tables (Recipients and Undeliverables) have approximately 80 million records

I did a nearly identical operation with another table that had only 7 million records and it took 10.5 hours. I hope this doesn't scale linearly to 115 hours.

I am tempted to cancel, retune, and rerun but that may be trigger a really expensive rollback operation that could take days. Any ideas?

thanks!

Triggers Running Slow (Update Trigger)

Jul 20, 2005

am using FOR UPDATE triggers to audit a table that has 67 fields. Myproblem is that this slows down the system significantly. I havenarrowed down the problem to the size (Lines of code) that need to becompiled after the trigger has been fired. There is about 67 IFUpdate(fieldName) inside the trigger and a not very complex selectstatement inside the if followed by an insert to the audit table. WhenI leave only a few IF-s in the trigger and comment the rest of thecode performance increased dramatically. It seems like it is checkingevery single UPdate() statement. Assuming that this was slowing downdue to doing a select for every update i tried to do to seperateselects in the beginning from Deleted and Inserted and assigningcolumns name to specific variables and instead of doingif Update(fieldName) i didif @DelFieldName <> @InsFieldNamebeginINSERT INTO AUDITSELECT WHAT I NEEDENDThis did not improve performance. If you have any ideas on how to getaround this issue please let me know.Below is an example of what my triggers look like.------------------------------------Trigger 1 -- this was my original designCREATE trigger1 on TableFOR UPDATEASif update(field1)begininsert into AuditSELECT What I needENDif update(field2)begininsert into AuditSELECT What I needEND...... Repeated about 65 more timesif update(field67)insert into AuditSELECT What I needEND---------------------------------------------------------------------------Trigger 2 -- this is what i tried but did not improve performanceCREATE trigger2 on TableFOR UPDATEASDeclare @DelField1 varcharDeclare @DelField2 varchar....Declare @DelField67 varcharSelect@DelField1 = Field1,@DelField2 = Field2,....@DelField67 = Field67From DeletedDeclare @InsField1 varcharDeclare @InsField2 varchar....Declare @InsField67 varcharSelect@insField1 = Field1,@insField2 = Field2,....@InsField67 = Field67From Inserted-- I do not do if Update() but instead compare variablesif @DelField1 <> InsField1beginInsert into AUDITSELECT what I needendif @DelField2 <> InsField2beginInsert into AUDITSELECT what I needend............if @DelField67 <> InsField67beginInsert into AUDITSELECT what I needend----------------------------------------------IF you have any idea how to optimize this please let me know. Anyinput is greatly appreciated. I do not have a problem with triggersdoing what they are supposed to, they are very slow this is myconcern. The reason I gave you two examples is because i suspect ithas something to do with the enormouse amount of code inside thetrigger. both examples perform about the same whether i use the twohuge selects from the Inserted and Deleted or not.Thanks,Gent

Very Slow And Not Complete Screen Update In SQL2005

Jan 14, 2008

Hi

I have the following problem (on 2 PC's now)

On 1 pc i installed VS2008 besides VS2005 and SQL 2005 (before i installed VS2008 everything was fine)

On the other is a fresh installed XP machine with only VS2008 SQL2550 and Office2007
Latets service packs are installed

On both machines when i open a table in SQL 2005 with the 'open table' command the show of the table is very slow.
Every row is updated file by field, the grid is not showing, the row and column headers are not 'grey' as normal.

Scrollign is impossible as the screen updates start again that slow.

Even a small table with 10 rows and 15 field behaves this slow. Its not workable.

What can be done to resove this???

Remote Scan On Linked Server - Fast SELECT/Slow UPDATE

Aug 14, 2001

In an ASP, I have a dynamically created SQL statement that amounts to "SELECT * FROM Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable WHERE Col1 = 1" (Col1 is the table's primary key). It returns the data immediately when executed.

However, when the same record is updated with "UPDATE Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable SET Comments = 'blah blah blah' WHERE Col1 = 1", the page times out before the query can complete.

I watched the program in Profiler, and I saw on the update that sp_cursorfetch was being executed as an RPC once per each row in the table. In a table of 78000 records, the timeout occurs well before the last record is fetched, and the update bombs.

I can run the same statements in Query Analyzer from a linked server and have the same results. The execution plan shows that a Remote Query is occurring on the select that returns 1 row, and a Remote Scan is taking place on the update scanning 78000 rows (I guess this is where all the sp_cursorfetch calls are happening...?).

How can I prevent the Remote Scan? How can I prevent the execution of the RPC sp_cursorfetch for each row in the remote table?

Thank you!

Problem : Extreme Activity - Slow Merge Replication - From A Schema Update

Jul 4, 2007

Hi there,

We have a big problem here with merge replication, specifically whenever a schema change occurs. We are replicating schema changes, and triggers/stored procedures. The example is that we changed about 150 stored procedures and about 30 triggers. This is then replicated to the subscriber database (which is also a merge publisher for further remote systems that were offline at the time) over a 10Mb link - hardly low bandwidth. However, the replication process takes about an hour and a half - considering the SQL on the primary server took less than a minute to run this is a big suprise.

We've run a trace to see if we can identitfy what is going on. There seems to be a great number of calls to sp_MSunmarkschemaobject - we are still waiting for a trace to complete to fully analyse this however it looks like it calls this repeatedly for every stored procedure in the database. We are currently re-testing to one of the remote servers with the merge agent set to the slow profile (not much hope that this will alter the poor performance).

This task looks to be excessive - and certainly does not seem to function in a sensible manner. Has anyone else had similar issues or have any suggestions. This is very infuriating as it means that the servers are effectively offline for a minimum of and hour and a half (in fact the remoter servers take over 4 hours !).

Thanks.

Complicated SQL Help

Perhaps you can help with something that I consider kind of omplicated? (I am SO hoping that I am NOT going to have to do this manually!!!)

I have a table (about 3000 rows) where two of the columns have Domain User information.

COL1 has DOMAINUsername and COL2 has (or SHOULD have) DOMAIN@username.com

I need to look at each field in COL1 and if exists DOMAINusername, I need to populate COL2 with username@DOMAIN.com

Is this possible???

It's Complicated

Aug 27, 2007

The low down:
Local Web Server on Windows 2003
Local SQL Server on Windows 2003
Hosting dynamic website tied to inhouse Access Application

Ok, basically, how it is set up, people can login to our website and enter data (insert record), on our end, we have an Access application where we can play with the data that was entered via the website. Currently, we do not have either server set up as a Mail server.

What we need to be able to do:
When a customer enters data on our website, their supervisor, and about 2-3 other people related to the transaction need to be emailed to be notified that an order was submitted. So how do I code that? On the page with the Insert Record? OR after Insert Record redirect them to another page that sends the mail out?

Which server do I enable the mail?

I was reading about SQL Mail etc, which would be good since we do mass emails to clients weekly, but I have no idea how to set that up and I look crossed eyed at any tutorial.

Do I want to set up theSQL server to also be a Mail Server that way we can use the SQL database to email as well as data entered from the website? But then again, the website points to the Web Server which pulls data off the SQL server (so unless the Web Server is a mail server, nothing will be sent, am I right?)

*sigh*

I know very little about SQL and I'm being asked to impliment this and I am 100% confused. I'm a graphics artist not a programmer! LOL

Thanks in advance to anyone who can/will help me.

I Think I Have Made Something Way To Complicated...

All I am trying to do is use a SqlDataSource, Read that Data from the Session Variable, Do a RowFilter off the Data and then return the Data (Currently a DataSet but doesnt matter).  But Since I dont use SqlDataSource that much not sure all the code I have is neccasry:
 protected DataSet GetSearchAppData(string strWhere)

DataSet dsSearchAppTable = new DataSet("SearchAppTable");
SqlDataSource ss = new SqlDataSource();
DataView dv = new DataView();
DataSourceSelectArguments dsArgg = new DataSourceSelectArguments();

dsArgg = DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty;
ss = ((SqlDataSource)Session["SearchAppTable"]);
dv = (DataView)ss.Select(dsArgg);
dv.RowFilter = strWhere;
dsSearchAppTable.Tables.Add(dv.Table.Clone());

return dsSearchAppTable;
}
 And to mention it, dsSearchAppTable returns a Table with 0 rows.  Not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong.

Complicated SQL Query

May 23, 2007

Hello
I am trying to write and SQL query...

I have a table with 4 columns, ID, Key, Value and SiteID.

SiteID can be Null or an int.

As an example I could have these four rows,
ID=1, key=colour, value=red, siteID=Null
ID=2, key=colour, value=green, siteID=2
ID=3, key=font, value=arial, siteID=2
ID=4, key=size, value=6,siteID=Null

My query will pass in a siteID and I need to bring back all rows with that site ID plus any rows whos key I haven't already got who's siteID =Null.

The Null site ID is default, so it always needs to bring back the null if a key doesn't exist with a siteID.

Does anyone know if that is even possible with just a straight SQL query?

Thanks

HELP With SQL Query - (complicated)

Oct 10, 2006

Hi I have been tearing my hair out trying to resolve this problem.
A form is submitted with a number in to checkthe database for the items with that number of items in the quantity field(s) and display them.

There are 2 relevant Tables in the 2005 server SQL Database, One called "Products" the other called "ProductDetails"

In both tables is a field called Quantity, this hold a numerical value for the quantity of the product.

Some products have additional attributes such as sizes or colours and these are stored in the ProductDetails table.

Every product is stored in the "Products" table and has a unique ProductID, where a product has additional attributes, these along with the ProductID and the quantity for that particular attribute are stored in the ProductDetails table.

I am trying to loop through the database and produce a list of all the items and if they have any additional size or colour attributes then display these too, and if they dont have additional attributes then just display the product details and quantity stored in the Products table.

What I have actually done instead is produce a list of every item and every attribute in the database, but for example Where product 1 doesnt have any attributes, and neither does product 2, but product 3 and product 3 do, when the details are displayed on the page (Using ASP),

Rather than displaying product 1 details and the quantity in the "Products" table, product 2 and the details & quantity in the Products table, then product 3 and each of the attributes & Quanity pertaining to that item in the "ProductDetails" table, and so on, it shows every item as having every combination of attributes,

so although products 1 and 2 have no attributes, it will show product 1 with the first attribute of the other products and then show another product 1 with the next attribute from another product and keep going untill all the attributes in the whole of the Product details table is shown , then do the same thing with product 2 and then product 3 and so on.....

Also the products that have no attributes are not only shown with the attributes that they dont have, they are not shown without attribues and with the correct details in the list.

Here is my string, which has changed a million times, I am just learning as I go along so if it is obvious please be pateient with me and help me out...

rsResults.Source = "SELECT DISTINCT Products.ProductID, Products.ProductName, Products.ProductPict, Products.Quantity, ProductDetails.ProductDetailID, ProductDetails.P_Size, ProductDetails.P_Color, ProductDetails.Quantity FROM Products, ProductDetails WHERE Products.ProductID = Products.ProductID AND Products.Quantity <= "& +rsResults__var1 & " OR Products.ProductID = ProductDetails.ProductID AND ProductDetails.Quantity <= "& +rsResults__var1 & " Order by Products.ProductID asc "

Can anyone see why it is doing this instead of only showing the attributes next to the items that have attribues?

Please help

Warm Regards,
Joe

Help Complicated Updates

Jun 16, 2007

Hello guys,
I am askng for any help ...am trying to get this SQL language.

I want to provide an SQL query to set all the priority to 1 for all customers that have all their orders being for a product with importance of 100.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
There are three tables in the database: Customer, Product and Orders.

The Customer table has three column: Customer_id (PK), priority, Address.

The Orders table has three colums as well: Order_id (PK), Customer_id (FK), Product_id (FK)

The Product table has three columns as well: Product_id(PK), Product_name, Importance.

So the order table is connected to both the product and the customers table by respective foreign key.

Complicated Query

Mar 2, 2008

I am trying to use ssis (sql query or .net-script task)
to transfer data from one table to another.
I have difficulties to make the query:

i have one table tbl_games which fields are :
type ,startDateTime, EndDateTime, playerId.
I need to check every 1/2 hour according to the startDateTime,
How many times a person is playing and to show it in a new table
tbl_collectData like this:
TimeplayerId Games_0-30_secondsGames_30-50_seconds

8-8:30 A 3 2
8:30-9B 2 10
9-:30C 20 7

The length of the game is measured by the StartDateTime -EndDateTime,
and only games type # 2 is being collected.
The number 3 example is: 3 games that lasted between 0-30 seconds and were played between 8-8:30 by player A, and the game type is 2.

I tryed to start by doing something like this , but it is not a complete query:
INSERT INTO tbl_collectData
(Time, playerId, Games_0-30_seconds)
SELECT '12 / 26 / 2007 4 : 53 : 03 PM' AS Expr1, playerId, COUNT(DATEDIFF(ss, StartDateTime, EndDateTime)) AS numberOfCalls_0_30
FROM tbl_games WHERE (Type = 2) AND (DATEDIFF(ss, StartDateTime, EndDateTime) < 31) AND (StartDateTime > '12 / 26 / 2007 4 : 53 : 03 PM') AND
(StartDateTime < '12 / 26 / 2007 5 : 23 : 03 PM')
GROUP BY playerId

I just don't know how to do it! Please help!!!!

Complicated SQL Question

Mar 7, 2008

Our office uses a program to keep demographic and private customer information. This program is installed in a Dell PowerEdge Windows 2000 Server with 8 desktops spread throughout the office for our employees to use. We back the SQL database up every night on 2 WD external HD that we rotate and the server does a nightly backup too. Our software vendor is changing to a different software program that we don't care for since our current software works so well. As a result, we want to keep using the original software. Here's my question:

If we choose to stay with the original software, do we need this software to read and print out the SQL database for individual customers forever? In other words, if this software fails, is there a way to read and print the existing records without using the original software? Our software vendor tells us that our version will be discontinued and no support will ever be available again. But since we are required to keep our records for many years down the road, we need a way to print this information out if the customer wants to have a copy say 5 years from now. Is there any way to do this without the original software? Thank you very much for your help and opinions.

Complicated (at Least To Me) Insert

Jul 20, 2005

The best way to explain this is by example.I have a source table with many columns.SourceSYMBOLEXCHANGE_NAMECUSIPTYPEISSUE_NAMEand so onThen I have 3 other destination tables.ExchangesEXCHANGE_ID IDENTITYEXCHANGE_NAME UNIQUESecurityMasterSECURITY_MASTER_ID IDENTITYSYMBOL UNIQUECUSIPTYPEISSUE_NAMEand so onExchange_mm_SecurityMasterEXCHANGE_IDSECURITY_MASTER_ID-- The Source table has multiple rows of the same symbol.-- The Exchanges table is already populated with all the exchanges.-- A single security (in the SecurityMaster table) can belong to manyExchanges, hence the Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster table.Now. If I just wanted to insert into the SecurityMaster table withouttouching the Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster table I could just execute:INSERT INTO SecurityMaster ([SYMBOL], [CUSIP], [TYPE], [ISSUE_NAME])SELECT DISTINCT[SYMBOL], [CUSIP], [TYPE], [ISSUE_NAME]FROM SourceWHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM SecurityMaster SM WHERE SM.SYMBOL =Source.SYMBOL)Now to the Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster. I need the individual identityvalues for each row inserted into SecurityMaster so I can then turnaround and insert into Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster. Here are theissues/possibilities as I see it.- @@IDENTITY will not work since I am not inserting a single row at atime- I guess I could INSERT INTO SecurityMaster first, THEN do anotherINSERT INTO Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster with different where clause.- I could create a stored procedure that does a single insert intoSecurityMaster and Exchange_mm_SecurityMaster. Then call thatprocedure for each row in the SELECT DISTRICT from the Source table.My main worry is the number of arguments passed in. My example onlyshows a few but a regular SecurityMster table could have 30-50columns.- Maybe do something with a trigger but I am not sure if I can passthe EXCHANGE_NAME value to the SecurityMaster trigger when that tabledoes not need it.Hope I explained it clearly. Any help would be appreciated.
