Slow Excecution Time Using TOP X Statement

Jun 11, 2007

Hi, I have a query which returns normally in less than a couple of seconds. When coupled with a "TOP" statement however, the execution time changes in a way I can't explain.

When using "TOP 1000", the query returns in its normal time. Any top value greater than 10 seems to function normally. However, as soon as we hit this "magic number" the query begins taking 30+ seconds to return.

As far as we can see, there is nothing odd about this query or the data that it is searching, and this problem has us stumped! Can anyone explain why top is producing these results, and is there any optomisation changes that anyone can suggest to give us faster queries in these cases?

Many thanks, Andy J.

Temptable Access Time SLOW

Jan 26, 2000

I have a stored procedure which creates 3 temporary tables. Every table is about ten rows and 25 columns. The inserts in the tables goes fast (< 30 ms). The selects from them is also that fast. BUT the first select takes about 3200 ms one each of the temptables. (I first do insert, then select from them.) So the SP executes at about 13 seconds instead of 3.

Any suggestions, anyone, please?

SQL Server Very Slow For 10 Minutes At A Time

Oct 27, 1998

We have an application that has about 100 users at a time. Roughly once a day, we experience a complete
slowdown on the server. All users notice it. The network seems fine because I can ping the server. Also,
I can attach to drives on the server quite fast so I don`t think it`s server resources. When I manage to
get in and do an sp_who, certain processes are blocking others. Talking to the users who were blocking,
they were not doing anything out of the ordinary - one was even doing just a select. The error log is full
of 17824 and 1608 errors. Is there some configuration setting that I should change? This is getting serious!

Thank you.

Database Is Slow To Access After Being Idle For Some Time

Feb 10, 2007

I've noticed that after the database have been idle for some time, it takes up to 10 seconds to get it started when something needs to access it. In the event viewer it says that the database <name> have been started.

Obviously, there is some idle timeout setting.

I saw an option in the database properties that is called "Auto Close" which is set to true. I assume this is what i'm looking for. Can someone confirm that? (it could take some time to test myself...)

But what i'm actually wondering is:

1. Is it possible to adjust how long it would wait before timing out?
2. What advantages does closing the database bring? Does it free up (a noticeable amount of) ressources? Or is it only that it's unlocking the files, so that it's possible to copy the database source files?

Delete Statement Very Slow

Dec 12, 2005

Hi,

I've got a table with about 500 000 records and growing monthly by about 40 000 records

When I perform the following query:

DELETE from [myTable] WHERE Month = '07' AND Year='2005'

This query will take about 10 minutes to execute. Columns Month & Year are both indexed.

Surely MSSQL can't be this slow on only 500 000 records.

Must I do some other database optimization ???

Thanks

Analysis :: DAX With IF Statement Very Slow

Jul 21, 2015

I have been trying to optimize a few DAX calculations that I have in my cube and ran into this problem Basically my DAX Measure

Counterparty Collateral Base DKK:=
[Counterparty Collateral Contracts DKK (filtered)]
+
CALCULATE(-[Account Balances DKK], Accounts[Counterpart Type ID] <> 8, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 14, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 16)
is pretty fast,
whereas as soon as I change the 2nd part to only add Account Balance if its>0, it takes ages i.e.
Counterparty Collateral Base DKK:=
[Counterparty Collateral Contracts DKK (filtered)]
+
IF(CALCULATE(-[Account Balances DKK], Accounts[Counterpart Type ID] <> 8, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 14, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 16)>0,
CALCULATE(-[Account Balances DKK], Accounts[Counterpart Type ID] <> 8, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 14, Accounts[ContractTypeID] <> 16),0)

Offcourse because I check every row I suppose with that "if" statement. Question is how do I improve it?
B
y the Way: [Account Balances DKK] is in the table - Account Balances
                    [Counterparty Collateral Contracts DKK (filtered)]  is in the table- Open Positions

This calculated measure [Counterparty Collateral Base DKK] is in Open Positions.And the query in MDX, that I run to pull this measure, looks like

select {[Measures].[Counterparty Collateral Base DKK]
}on 0,
Non Empty {[Accounts].[Counterpart ID].children
  *[Base Currencies].[Currency Code].children
  *[Products].[Product Name].children
  } on 1
from [model]
where [Dates].[Date].&[2015-06-30T00:00:00]

The requirement is such that I have to add the measures in two separate tables.How can I improve the performance when adding the filter?

Slow Moving Dimension And History Time Stamp

Nov 14, 2007

The following question might sound a bit stupid but I'm not a database expert so hopefully nobody minds me asking it.

Here's what I did:

1. I created an SSIS package that is supposed to import new data into my data warehouse as it becomes available.

2. Since I need to maintain some of the history I use the Slow Moving Dimensions part (set the history flag on input fields) but run into an error condition while running the package. The message basically says that I'm about to create a duplicate record which is not allowed.

Original Table1:

PK1 field1
PK2 field2
PK3 field3
field4
field5

-----------

Now I enhanced it like this:

Extended Table1:

PK1 field1
PK2 field2
PK3 field3
field4
field5

CreateDate (new)
NewDate (new)
ActiveFlag (new)
_____________________

Now on some records the package is supposed to archive history by populating the (new) fields. In order to keep the record unique (primary key constraint) thought, do I need to make the (new) fields primary keys as well?

So I guess I'm struggling with a more basic concept;)

I would appreciate if somebody could shed some light on this.

Thanks in advance.

Slow Respons Time From Reporting Service Over Sharepoint

Jan 29, 2007

I am running SQL 2005 reporting services on a windows 2003 machine with SharePoint over SSL

My reporting services web directories are virtual directories under the SharePoint website.

I am having a problem with loading https://sharepoint.mysite.com/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx

When you first open IE and bring up the page it takes about 30 seconds to load. Once you have connected via any machine, all other machines can connect at normal speed 1-2 seconds. All testing is being done on our LAN so there is no bandwidth issues when opening the pages.

My guess is that something is going into a sleep mode, but I am not sure where that would be set.

Thanks for any suggestions

Slow Running Insert Statement

Apr 6, 2007

I support a website (ASP.NET 2.0) where recently users have been unable to insert data due to timeout issues. The functionality executes a query that inserts a single row into a SQL Server 2005 db table. I tried running this query from the backend, and it took 4:48 to insert a single row! Interestingly, after that initial agony any similar inserts I tried took no time whatsoever. I have checked the execution plan, but unfortunately don't really know what I'm looking for with inserts, as most of my experience with execution plans is with select statements. Any resources anyone could point me to for troubleshooting this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Dave

Web Application That Deals With Slow/time Consuming Database Processes

Dec 19, 2007

Hello All,
I’m looking for a solution to timeouts that occur when I’m executing a stored procedure from my web application. Most of the SPs will run from 3 to 15 minutes, and, unfortunately, modifying/optimizing them isn’t an option at the moment. I tried setting the CommandTimeout to 0 with no luck. Unless, I didn’t use it properly. Here’s my code:  1
2 try
3 {
4 string dbConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConStringNTMTLDEV"].ToString();
5 OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(dbConn);
6
7 lbl_SearchResult.Text = dbConn;
8
9 //OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter();
10 OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SP_CallHistoryLookUp", connection);
11 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
12
13 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@phoneNumber", "1234567890"));
14 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@email", "123@123.com"));
15 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@WebUser", "123"));
16 connection.Open();
17 cmd.CommandTimeout = 0;
18 cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
19 cmd.Dispose();
20 connection.Close();
21 }catch(OleDbException ex)
22 {
23 lbl_SearchResult.Text += "&lt;br/> Something went wrong </br>";
24 lbl_SearchResult.Text += ex.Message.ToString();
25 }
26
27
28
  Is it possible to launch a stored procedure and close the connection without waiting for a result?Would the stored procedure still run on the SQL server? I’m using MSSQL 7. Would you have any examples that would solve this problem? Thank you for your help.
R.

Slow Query With Java Using Prepare Statement

Jul 12, 2007

We are using sql server 2005 with java and the last version of driver JDBC, some querys show bad performance when you send by application but if you use sql query analyzer the performance is excellent. We have take a profiler trace and saw that Java call SP_PREPEXEC when it makes a call of preparestatement. We taken the sentence from profiler (with SP_PREPEXEC) and saw the same problem, the query plan is bad, but if we avoid use the prepare statement the query works fine and the performance problem is overcome. Since we have the application with java and use every time the preparedstatement sentence from java, it is very expensive for us , change the code. Do you have any solution for these problem?

Case Statement With A Time Value?

Dec 8, 2007

I have a query that is looking at a varchar field called dldate

The vales are saved as time, i.e. 00:30, 16:52 etc.

I want to read in the values using a case statement and display a result as 1-12 based on what the time value is. Example,

if its between 00:00 and 02:00 I want a 1
if its between 02:00 and 04:00 I want a 2
if its between 04:00 and 06:00 I want a 3 ...

Here's the case statement we have come up with, but it is not yielding the correct results:
CASE
WHEN DlTime between convert(datetime,'00:00') and convert(datetime,'01:59') THEN 1
WHEN DlTime between convert(datetime,'02:00') and convert(datetime,'03:59') THEN 2

else
DlTime
end as final

any idea on what we are doing wrong?

Need Help With SQL Statement (combined SELECT And WHERE At Same Time)

Oct 29, 2007

I am building a file repository page. For data source I use SQLDataSource and Repeater to display the categories. I am trying to achieve the result of displaying the following data: List of all "Main Categories" and all "Sub Categories" under each main category name.  Also, "Total Number of files" and "Category Description" under each "Main Category".
Sample:

Human Resources
All documents related to new hire process.
New Hire Request forms, New Hire forms, Termination Forms
Total Files:  25

Programs & Utilities
Windows utilities and other tools to keep you safe on the net.
Antivirus, Spyware Removal Tools, Other programs
Total Files:  37

My SQL2005 DB has 2 tables.

1) FileCategories. Fields(CategoryID, ParentCategoryID, CategoryName, CategoryDescription)
2) Files. (CategoryID, ParentCAtegoryID, FileTitle)
My "Main Categories" are the ones that has a NULL in ParentCategoryID field. Because they are the Parents.
My each "Sub Category" has it's own ID as well as parentCategoryID. This insures that each Sub Category corresponding to it's parent only.
Sample:

Human Resources. CategoryID=4, ParentCategoryID=NULL
New Hire Request forms. CategoryID=13, Parent CategoryID=4
New Hire Forms.                CategoryID=17, Parent CategoryID=4
Termination Forms.           CategoryID=22, Parent CategoryID=4

Programs & Utilities. CategoryID=6, ParentCategoryID=NULL
Antivirus.                                 CategoryID=8, Parent CategoryID=6
SpyWare Removal Tools.     CategoryID=26, Parent CategoryID=6
Other Programs.                    CategoryID=31, Parent CategoryID=6

When I am creating a sql Select statement first I need to choose All "CategoryIDs" where "Parent category" is NULL. Then All "CategoryIDs" where "Parent categories" are not NULL and corresponding to Main Categories.
Is it something accomplishable with SQLdataSource or I have to use ObjectDataSource or something else.
I'll be on the  site all day today (10/29/07) and tomorrow (10/30/07) checking for replies. Thanks in advance and let me know if you have any questions.

Taking Too Long Time For Insert Statement

Sep 19, 2007

Hi All,

Scenario:

There are two applications running on different server say ServerA and ServerB. Both applications are using same database server SQL Server 2005 say ServerB. Called the application as ApplicationA and ApplicationB with respect to Server names

It means for ServerA the database is remote and for ServerB, database is local.

Both the applications are Java application and using datasource to connect to the database. The driver used are SQL Server 2000 driver (which includes 3 jars). This can be a question that why 2000 driver is used for 2005. The reason is, application on ServerA is getting error while using SQL Server 2005 as Driver not proper.

Problem Area:

When ApplicationB (local to database) is doing some DB operations (which includes select and then batch insert), ApplicationA (remote) is trying to insert a record which is taking too long time (around 40 sec.). This is causing timed out in ApplicationA.

ApplicationA is inserting the data into the same table from where ApplicationB is selecting the data.

Any help????

Cheers

Hi all,

I have created a report in SSRS 2005 which is being viewed by users from different Time Zones.

I have a dataset which has a field of type datetime (UTC). Now I would like to display this Date according to the User Time Zone.

For example if the date is August 07, 2007 10:00 AM UTC,

then I would like to display it as August 07, 2007 03:30 PM IST if the user Time Zone is IST.

Similarly for other Time Zones it should display the time accordingly.

Is this possible in SSRS 2005?

Any pointers will be usefull...

Each primary key is unique, but the begindate is non-unique, and i guess even if i use datetime2 and add nanoseconds, from what i have read, there is a chance that i could have a duplicate datetime since the date is imported via XML from multiple sources.
