Slow Query; Timeout After 30 Seconds

Aug 17, 2004

Hello there,

I am programming with visual basic and I have a large query wich takes too long for execution. After 30 seconds I get a timeout error.

Is there any way to raise the timeout to 90 seconds or something.

I'm using the following connection string to connect to the database.

Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Connect Timeout=2;Password=****;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=user;Initial Catalog=test;Data Source=sqlserver

thank you

Help Me Diagnose This SQL Timeout (runs 40 Seconds In ASP.NET, &<1 Second In Query Analyzer)

Mar 8, 2007

This is in ASP.NET 1.1.  I have a performance problem with a webform.  The form contains several bound fields and a couple datagrids.  I fill the grids by creating a data adapter, then I use the adapter to fill a dataset, then I set the grid datasource to the dataset.
The query to fill one of the grids is getting a SQL timeout when running from my application (it takes about 40 seconds to complete).  When I run the same SQL code from SQL Query Analyzer it runs in less than 1 second.  (it is embedded sql in the app, not a stored procedure).
I suspect that something else is being requested from SQL during the postback that is causing a blocking issue or something but I can't tell exactly what is happening.  I've tried tracing through the code and all that I can tell is that the timeout occurs during the dataadapter.fill command.
Has anyone else seen something similar?  Is there a good way for me to see what SQL commands are being executed from ASP.NET?  Any advice on debugging this would be much appreciated.

Help.. Simple Query Took 20+ Seconds

Mar 26, 2004

Hi all,

can someone give me some advise on how to troubleshoot this.... thanks.

Here is the situation:

We have a server running nicely for the past 1 years. And just yesterday, things started to acting very slow.
A simple query that will return one row:

"select * from product where itemno = 1234 and visible =1"

will take 20 second sometime 30! The weird thing is.. it only happens intermittently. The table also only contain 4000 rows. so its not even a big table. I am not sure if this is caused by lack of memory or what (256mb ram, p4 1ghz on this server).

The system cpu usage % avg around 3-8%. but when that weird behavior started. All the other queries will wait for it to finished and then burst the cpu usage up to 100%. Afterward, it will level off and then the cycle repeat again.

I'm just hoping if anyone can give me a few pointers as of where to troubleshoot. I've tried rebuild the index on that table but it didn't help. This weird behavior not only happen on this particular table, but also on different db within the same server. (note: they are small dbs only)

p.s. here is the site that is running on this db, you'll see this weird delay after a few click on the pages.

Thanks you for your time,
Derick

forgot to mentioned, the sql server is 7.0

Grouping A Query In 30 Seconds

Apr 13, 2006

Hi,

How can I make a query and group the registries in a interval of 30 seconds...like

for each line I have a datetime field that have all the day, and I need it to return just like

TIME Contador_type1 Contador_type2 Total

01-01-2006 00:00:30.000 2 5 7

01-01-2006 00:01:00.000 3 7 10

It's just an example...but that's the result that I need and my table is

data_hora -- datetime field

tipo - 1 or 2 -- count

nrtelefone - that's is the number dialed.

Thanks

Update Query Taking 23 Seconds

Jan 26, 2007

I am not sure if I am in the correct location or if I should be in the SQL forum but here is my question:

I have an update statement that goes out through SQL 2000 through a local linked server to another SQL 2000 server on my machine. When I run the update in Query Analyzer it takes less than a second. When I run it in my C# code using the SqlCommand object and parameters it takes me ~23 seconds. If I remove one of the parameters it goes down to ~15 milliseconds. Has anyone heard of this happening?

The parameter that I remove is a simple char(10) column that isn't the primary key and is used in the WHERE statement. There isn't an index on the field.

23 Seconds
Update table Set column = @val WHERE field = @field AND other = @other
15 milliseconds
Update table Set column = @val WHERE field = 'values' AND other = @other

Query Timeout

Aug 17, 2006

I need to figure out if my query is timing out due to row lock contention. The SqlException trapped in my client C# application contains Error Number 1205 but sometimes it contains -2.

I guess the SqlCommand timeout and the server timeout are the two possibilities. Is there a definitive way to find out that the SqlException was thrown due to one of these two reasons? Because if it's some other reason, I want to excute a different logic.

Thanks,

How To Change Query Timeout?

Feb 9, 2005

Greetings

I have encountered the following problem:

I currently develop an application for my company that actually uses rather long queries, with many records.

I have a particular query (Written using SQL string inside the .NET application rather than Stored proceedures),that needs to run in 2 databases (both SQL Server):

The first one is a test database that we use when in developing time quota to test our data

The second one is the real thing a data base that contains lots of records.

When criteria are placed in the query, it returs few records in both the databases , but if no criteria are placed (So it fetches all the records..) In the test Database works ok, but in the real one it "jams" till 30 seconds pass and I get a time out message...

I tried to change the Query time out time from inside the SQL Server from

Tools/Options/Advanced

but it doesn't seem to work out... it still times out after 30 secs

Any Ideas?

Thanx in advance :D

SQL Timeout Through ADO But Not From Query Analyser

Jan 12, 2007

I have a strange problem running a stored proc in SQL 2000. The proc returns XML and I'm using ADO to call the proc and return the data as a stream. When I call the proc through ADO, it times out because it is taking 40 seconds to run and my command timeout is set to 30. I can increase this no problem but the strange thing is that when I run the same proc from within query analyser, it completes in under a second.

I put profiler on it tracing the command start and finish events and it's definitely taking 40 seconds between start and finish. The proc is used with various input parameters and the timeout is only occurring for some combinations of inputs, but it always seems to take much longer than it does when run from query analyser.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing the delay, or where I might look to find the problem?

Thanks...

Problem With Query Timeout

Jan 15, 2008

Hallo,

I have the following Query running on my local SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows XP, and it needs only 2 sec. to execute. Then I transfered it to our production database, which is an SQL Server 2005 Datacenter Edition on a quad-core Xeon with 4GB Memory and the Query always runs in a Timeout. The version of my local Database is 9.0.3054 and the Production Version is 9.0.3042. 3042 seems to be SP2.

Here the Query:

SELECT i.lid AS userlid, i.lgroupid AS grouplid, i.strgroupname, j.xgssnid

FROM (SELECT kruser.lid, kruser.stremployeeno, krgroupusers.lgroupid, krusergroup.strgroupname

FROM kruser INNER JOIN krgroupusers ON kruser.lid = krgroupusers.luserid

INNER JOIN krusergroup ON krgroupusers.lgroupid = krusergroup.lid

WHERE (NOT (kruser.strusername LIKE 'i_%')) AND

(kruser.stremployeeno <> '') AND

(kruser.stremployeeno IS NOT NULL)

) AS i

LEFT OUTER JOIN

(SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT xgssnid, AppRolle

FROM (SELECT DISTINCT xwebmodul + '_' + xrolle AS AppRolle, xgssnid

FROM xzztmpuserimport

UNION

SELECT DISTINCT 'nav_' + xwebmodul AS AppRolle, xgssnid

FROM xzztmpuserimport AS a

) AS b

ORDER BY xgssnid, AppRolle

) AS j

ON i.stremployeeno = j.xgssnid AND i.strgroupname = j.AppRolle

WHERE (i.lgroupid > 105) AND (i.lid > 100) AND

(NOT (i.strgroupname LIKE 'i_%')) AND

(j.xgssnid IS NULL)

This Query filters all internal Applicationroles of a user which must be deleted for the specific user, because he didn't need them longer. Can it be, that it was a bug in the older Servicepack and it runs on my PC because of the newer one? My problem is also, that I didn't know what ServiecPack brings Version 3042 to 3054.

I also tried splitting the Query in 3 subqueries and using this 3 in a resulting 4th. It's the same!

Has anyone an idea

Thanks for your help
Hans

IT takes 30 (thirty) seconds to finish this query.  OMG

Where do I start to decipher why on Earth this takes more than .01 seconds?

A Very Slow Query

Oct 12, 2000

Hi,

I have a query that takes minutes to execute, even through there are about 300,000 records are being processed. I would appreciate any help with optimizing that query.
I have two tables: User and Usage. Table user has two fields: User_Id and Date_Created and a non-clustered index on User_Id. Table usage has two fields also: User_Id and Date_Used and non-clustered index on both fields. The User table is populated when the user registers. The Usage table is populated every time the user opens a document.

Here is what I need to do: get the number of users from the Usage table who opened a document at least once after they have registered during the last 30 days for each day in the time frame, where the time frame varies.
For example, if the time frame is 8/01/00 - 8/31/00, I need to get the following data:

date returns
---- -------
8/01/00 10 (10 users returned to the document between 7/2/00 and 8/1/00)
8/02/00 15 (15 users returned between 7/3/00 and 8/02/00)
.
.
.
8/31/00 20 (20 users returned between 8/1/00 and 8/31/00)

Here is my query:

SELECT [date],
(SELECT count(distinct user_id)
FROM usage u JOIN [user] ON u.[user_id] = [user].[user_id]
WHERE u.[date] BETWEEN usage.[date]-30 AND usage.[date]
AND u.[date]>[user].date_created
GROUP BY usage.[date])returns
FROM usage
WHERE [date] BETWEEN @date1 AND @date2

This query works fine, but too slow. We use MS SQL server 7.0.

Thank you,
Yana
