Slowest SQL Server Standard Editio Connection

I'd found a serious problem connecting to SQL Server Standard Edition. The server has 8 processors, 16 gB of memory, SCSI RAID etc. Seems great, but the result is terrible. Web services are using ADODB, not ADO.Net to provide the compatibility with the client application which was realised using pure C++. The connection is incredibly slow, the application is unusable in such a condition. By other way COM+-based realisation of the same mechanism (used by classic ASP site) works fine. I'd verifed all the protocols (Shared Memory, Named Pipe, TCP/IP), but without any success.
Can anybody help me?

I am putting up a website this month, its pretty complex in terms of the data being stored. We expect to have 1000 users in our first month and grow exponentially from there. In addition, users will be uploading content to the site (mostly jepgs and PDFs).
We currently have a dedicated server and need to decide whether to go with Microsoft SQL Server Workgroup or Standard. Any advice on this?
If we went with workgroup, what is the threshold for the number of users before we would have to switch to standard? Also...are there any huge limitations that would make our site fail if we went with workgroup?

Hi all, i have standard edition of sql server, on a server hat doesnt have sql server standard would i be able to connect to it using my connection string. Or does the server has to have standard edition too. Is this same for express edition, and if possible to do this whats the difference between express connection string from standard edition thanks

Hi,
I€™ve developed a BI system using the SQL Server 2005 Developer€™s Edition.
SSAS, SSIS and SSRS have been added to a SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition Server in preparation for delivering the developed database to this live environment.
So I am able to connect directly to the Database Engine, SSAS, SSIS and SSRS successfully from the actual SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition box which is sat on a Windows 2003 Server operating system.
However when I launch SQL Server Management Studio from a desk top PC which is connected to the SQL Server Standard Edition box I can€™t connect to either SSIS or SSRS, however I can connect to the Database Engine and it also seems that I can connect to SSAS OK.
I am using Windows Authentication where the I used a SQL Server account which exists with €œsysadmin€? permissions and this SQL Server account has the same login name as the Windows Server 2003 desktop login.
What do I do next please?

Hi all,
I have a production website at Godaddy and an ASP.net 2.0 page that successfull connects to a SQL 2005 instance provided by Godaddy using SQL authentication(User ID/Password). The Godaddy database has become too small (200MB limit) and the plan is to use the SQL Server 2005 standard edition at my office. In other words, I want to host my own SQL server and keep the front-end at Godaddy.
The ASP.net test page at Godaddy generates the basic connection errors when attempting to connect to my SQL server at the office. This error has several variations depending on how the connection string is configured:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)
In this case the connection string is:
Data Source=xxx.xxx.xx.xxx,1433; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=Test; User ID=xxx; Password=xxx"
I've embedded this connection string directly into the ASP.net test page in order to make this page independent of the web.config file.
My MS SQL server is on a Small Bussiness Server 2003 with Sharepoint and Remote Workplace running, and this machine is behind a linksys router, and Routing and Remote Access is running in place of windows firewall.
I've openned ports TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 on the router and Routing and Remote Access. Telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx 1433 connects successfull, and the SQL log shows listening on 1433. I don't know if telnet is telling me that there is successful connection to the port on the router, or if it makes it all the way to the SQL server.
The SQL server is running the default instance MSSQLSERVER. Locally, I am able to connect using SQL 2005 Studio, and I am able to confirm this activity in the SQL log. Since I've openned port 1433, I also see numerous dictionary attacks in the SQL Log. Based on this, remote connectivity is there.
The strange observation is that the SQL log shows no sign of a connection attempt from the ASP.net page. The connection appears to be failing before it reaches the SQL server. I've openned ports in the Linksys router and the NAT/Firewall the same way I've openned them for Sharepoint and Remote Workplace.
I also found that when I move the ASP.net test page to another ISP, then the SQL connection that worked from the Godaddy website, is no longer able to connect. An explanation of this would also be very helpful to me.
Is there something that needs to be configured to expose the SQL server to ASP.net pages that is different from remote access?
Does IIS need to somehow be involved?
Is there something in Small Business Server 2003 that could be interferring with ASP.net page requests to the SQL server?
Do I need to run my machine as a web server to make this work?
Any help with this configuration would be greatly appreciated.

We have replication setup on a sql server 2000. We encountered issue that the distribution agent goes down (distrib.exe stop running) in the event of network connection broken. We would like to know:
is this the expected result that the distribution agent will go down in the event of communication failure between the distribution server and subscriber server?
if not, is there a way to programmatically control and restart the agent?
Is there any sp in SQL server which can monitor the replication communication error message?
is there any sp in SQL server which can be run to restart the agent?
For the best practice, what do you think we can do to achieve an €˜event-driven€™ kind of mechanism so when an communication breaks, the agent can be restarted by the triggered event (or at least a simple way to automatically restart)?

I have an app that queries the same SQL Server, instance and database. In one execution of the app, it makes multiple queries against the database in two different runs, each run being approx. 10 seconds apart. The app app does remote logins to the SQL Server using Standard Security. Each run makes twenty (20) connection attempts and all connection attempts between the two runs are using the same SQL account/password€¦(when successful) there is a .5 second delay between each attempt. So, here is a visual description:
Run 1
- connection attempt 1 (.5 sec delay), account1/password
- .
- .
- .
- connection attempt 20, account1/password
(10 second delay)
Run 2
- connection attempt 1 (.5 sec delay) , account1/password
- .
- .
- .
- connection attempt 20, account1/password
The problem I€™m seeing is: All connection attempts in Run 1 are successful in connecting to the SQL Server. All connection attempts in Run 2 are UNSUCCESFFUL when connecting to SQL Server (error message is €œSQL Server cannot be found or Access Denied€?). Remember, ALL connection attempts are using the same SQL account and password.
As an added note: When I switched from using SQL Standard Security to Windows Security, ALL connection attempts in each Run was successful.
Does see anything wrong with this? Is Standard SQL Security limited in the number of simultaneous connections or in some other kind of way?

I need a comparision between Evaluation copy and Standard license version of SQL Server 2005 /SSIS.
I'm assigned a task to evaluate SSIS and migrate a project to SSIS.
I have downloaded SSIS evaluation version and started working on that.
Now i'm being posed questions for the complete functionality of the tool...
- Whether it has a Bulk load trasformation ?
- Whether the evaluation version contain all the features of a standard license version ?
I need to submit a consolidated report for SSIS in comparision to the current ETL tool features.
Can you please let me is there any considerable features not given with a evaluation copy ?

How do SQL 2000 service packs play a role in upgrading? That is, can SQL 2000 Standard with no Service Packs(SP) be upgraded to SQL 2005 Standard, or does SQL 2000 Standard have to have a certain service pack??

We have experienced an issue with back backup / restore of a database originating from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2003.
We have the following setup:
SQL Server 2000
- DatabaseA
- asdfUser (SQL User)
- asdfUser is (dbowner) of DatabaseA
- DatabaseB
- asdfUser (SQL User)
- asdfUser is (dbowner) of DatabaseB
SQL Server 2005 Standard
-asdfUser is NOT Setup as a user yet.
-We restore DatabaseA and DatabaseB to the SQL Server 2005 Standard. The databases are restored with the security permissions of asdfUser being the DB Owner of DatabaseA and DatabaseB.
-We create a new SQL user named asdfUser on the SQL Server 2005 box. We then try to add the UserMapping of DBOWNER for the DatabaseA and DatabaseB. We receive an error message stating that the asdfUser already have permissions to the databases. We proceed with the user creation without those permissions.
-We proceed to the login properties of the asdfuser and view their UserMappings. The asdfUser does not have access to DatabaseA or DatabaseB. We then add the UserMapping of DBOWNER to both DatabaseA and DatabaseB. We Try to select OK and we receive an error message that states that the user already has those permissions.
-When we query the UserID's of the asdfUser that is in the database and the UserID of the asdfUser that is created, they are two different values.
I assume this is a bug... any word on a fix?

We got SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP3 running on Windows 2003 Standard Edition server.
Now, we would like to apply windows 2003 SP2 to the Operating System.
We are concerned that whether windows 2003 SP2 is compatible with SQL server 2000 (SP3)?
I was looking at the application compatibility chart for Windows 2003 SP2.Among them Microsoft SQL Server Standard (2000) was listed but with no Service pack details. And also does Standard means standard edition there?
My Question - Is windows 2003 server SP2 compatible with SQL Server 2000 (SP3) Standard Edition? And what if I plan to apply SP4 to Sql Server ?

I am reaching the end of my 180 eval of SQL Server and am ready to "upgrade" to the standard edition. My question is this: is it possible to purchase a copy of SQL Server Standard with just 1 CAL? All I seem to see are 5-CAL and 1-Processor packages, but since I am the sole user of the database, additional CALs are not necessary.

I tried creating an alias to the server to get it to connect to analyze the server but it will not recognize the SQL 2000 server as a valid server to analyze. I can use the alias to connect in EM or SSMS. Any ideas? The server is not clustered and is at SP4. I've connected to several others in my environment but this one is causing me grief!

Hi, I had an old web application created during asp.net 1.1 and it have a connection problem with the sql server 2005 when it is mirgrated to a new webserver with dotnet framework 2.0 platform. I have enabled the remote access(TCP/IP and named pipes) in sql server 2005, did all the neccessary things, check whether the TCP/IP is enabled, named pipe is enabled... I created another web application using VS 2005. Occasionally I'm seeing the following error when tranlog or full backup maintenance plan is executing.
Failed-1073573396) Failed to acquire connection "Local server connection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.
What is strange is that it goes away without any action from myself. We have a tranlog backup that is scheduled every hour. I had this error happen once in the middle of the night. It looks like the job was running fine because almost all the backups are there. I've searched and not found a resolution to this error. I checked the event log and don't see any issues and even tried rebuilding the maintenance plans.

Hi all!
I keep getting an error when I try and create a new data connection. This is the error I'm getting:
Unable to connect to database.
It is only possible to connect to SQL Server Desktop Engine databases and Microsoft Access with this version of Visual Studio.
I can connect to Access without any problems. Is there anyway around this?
I'm using C# .net Standard with SQL Server 2000.

I have a SQL Server STND edition Instance on a running on Windows 2000 Server. How Can I tell if the instance is named or default and how many named Instances can I add to this install????
Is is just as simple as rerunning the Install? How about Service Packs?

Hello,
I have a question.
I want to migrate from mySql to Sql Server, and I should decide which version will I use.
The problem is that I need partitioning, and it is included only in the Enterprise version. But the Enterprise version costs 5 times more than the standard and the workgroup version.
Is it worth to spend so much money only for the partitioning?
Also, maybe I am wrong, and the partitioning is also included in the Standard version?

I want to install Visual Studio .NET 2005.
I've seen that there are several questions about upgrading from SQL Express to Standard edition, so I though that if it's possible, first I install SQL Server Standard and then during installing Visual Studio I don't install SQL Express that is by default is installed, but I don't know is it possible to introduce Standard edition instead of Express edition to Visual Studio? and if it's possible, how can I do it?

Regarding Standard vs Enterprise processor usage, I have read the SQL2K5 edition comparison articles that MS puts out, but I recently viewed a webcast that gave me cause for concern.
There was a webcast called "Selecting the Right SQL Server 2005 Edition", hosted by Michael Raheem, where he stated that although Standard edition allowed 4 processors (based on sockets, not cores) some index operations only leveraged one core at a time. So even if you have, let's say, 4 dual core CPUs (= 8 processor cores), only one core at a time will be used, and the rest will be idle during that operation.
Can anyone give a better idea of which operations are full multi-core in SQL Standard. Michael mentions indexing - does that mean strictly explicit reindexing operations which are part of a maintenance routine, or does that apply to index operations during normal inserts and/or updates?
We will be using this to run a backend for a commercial website, and we need to be sure whether we can get by with Standard or we need to make the investment in Enterprise.

Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. I have installed IIS, VS.NET 2003, .NET 2.0 Framework, and now I have tried to install the standard version of SQL Server 2000 and it is telling me that I can only install the client components. The O/S is Windows XP Pro on a laptop.
