Some Times, SQL Express That Comes With VS 2005 If Failing.
Aug 19, 2007
Hi,
I installed VS 2005, but the optional component SQL Express is failing. The log says "SQL Express installation stopped due to unexpected errors". Can some one help me out how to resolve this issue?
Regards,
-Aazad.

We have a large number of clients attempting to replicate two publications on 2005 Express databases (2 publications subscribed to the one subscriber database) with our 2005 Server (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Standard Edition) and experiencing two significant problems:
1) Users experience the following message:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for changes not yet sent to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).
This problem should not apparently occur with SQL Server 2005 (or 2005 Express) instances with SP2 applied. All clients experiencing this problem have SP2 installed as does our Server and the retention period is 30 days. The subscribers have been replicating well under that.
2) Replications never succeed after appearing to replicate/loop around for hours
This issue is the most critical as we have clients who have been installed and re-installed with new instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, new empty databases (on subscriber before snapshot extraction), and using fresh snapshots (less than an few hours old) which cannot successfully replicate.
Interestingly there is at least 1 instance where several computers are subscribed and successfully replicating the same database as another where replication refuses to succeed.
To test we have taken a republished database from another 2005 Server which is working fine and restored it to the same server as the one holding the database with which we are experiencing problems and subscribed to it. This test worked fine and replication of both publications went through fast and repeatedly without showing any signs of problem.
This indicates that the problem is perhaps data related as it appears localised to that database.
Below are two screenshots which may assist.
Screenshot 1 Shows that on the server side the replication attempts look like they are succeeding despite the fact that the subscriber end does not indicate success. Also the history indicates the the subscription has spent all it's time initialising and not merging any changes.
Screenshot 2 Shows a rogue process which has appears on many of the problem child subscribers. It shows a process running with no end time even though the job indicates failure in the message and even though other replication attempts appear to have succeeded after it. This process stays in the history showing that it is running even when I can find no corresponding process for it.
Can anyone suggest a further course of action/further testing/further information required which may assist?
This is extremely urgent and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Scott

I don't know where to turn to.
[Setup has detected a problem with Microsoft .Net Framework installation and cannot proceed. Microsoft .Net Framwork is either not installed on this system or is corrupt.]
I'm going around in circles (for days and I'm furious...sorry!)
I've a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and trying to install VS 2005 together with SQL 2005 Express.
I got VS2005 installed (told me issues with SQL Express so failed on that part of it).
Installed Service packs for VS2005 then a service pack for VS2005 on Vista.
Tried to install SQLEXPR_ADV.exe (newest SQL 2005 with advanced features and came upon the above message).
I just don't know what to do next...this is my 10th day at trying to get something to work with this operating system.
Please help! Thanks in anticipation.

When the dialog box appeared indicating file couldn't found, there was no option to look elsewhere for it the only option was retry or cancel which after 5 or 6 retries I cancelled. Everything else appears to have installed correctly for this instance.
Also earlier attempts to install have left services for named instances that I cannot install to such as SQLEXPRESS , SQLEXPRESS1 and CURRIEREXPRESS, I long ago had a beta version installed and have attempted numerous methods to completely wipe these out using the uninstallbetas tool from Microsoft as well as a number of suggestions from some posts.
Please help - The most significant reason I'm installing this is to practice creating SQL Reporting Service reports

Hey, everyone. I'm new to database programming in SQL Server, and I currently have the 2005 express edition. I was wondering whether it was possible to check whether one time (h:mm AMPM) is less or greater than another (the other in this case being the GETDATE). I already made a user-defined function in order to extract the time from a datetime, since SQL Server doesn't support the time data type. The thing is that the value is returned as a char(8) in the 12-hour style HH:MM AMPM format and I'm sure that's what's screwing up the comparison function. What would I need to do to compare two times (24-hour or 12-hour, whichever is easier)?

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition and receiving the following error when trying to install the SQL Express Server with Advanced Options:
An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'.
I did view the readme and found the following advice:
3.1 Existing SQL Native Client Installation May Cause Setup to Fail
Setup might fail and roll back with the following error message: "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'." To work around this problem, uninstall SQL Native Client by using Add or Remove Programs. On a cluster, uninstall SQL Native Client from all nodes. Then, run SQL Server Setup again.
The problem is that I do not have the SQK Native Client installed to uninstall it.
Any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I have an off the wall situation that occurs when I try to fill a dataset that has already been filled with data. The issue with the DataSet in and of itself was a mistake I made and is not relevant to this forum.
What would appear to be relevant though, is the fact that after the exception was caught, I could not longer query data from the SQL Express database that was included in my project. In other words, when I tried to view the data in the IDE by selecting "Show Table Data," I received a message telling me that the query was running and eventually it timed out.
To fix the problem in my application, I obviously eliminated the bad code. But to be able to query the database again, I had to physically restart my computer (yes, I probably could have restarted the service, I know).
So my question is, has anyone run into this phenomenon before? If so, is there a way to prevent it other than the obvious, which is to clear the DataTables in my DataSet before filling them?
It's not that big a deal, but it is kind of a pain in the rear to have to restart everything because of a stupid coding mistake on the client side while I'm developing an app.

I have a cell in one of my reports that displays both a begin time and an end time. The problem is that the times are stored in military time and I need to display them in AM/PM format.
Currently I am doing the following:
CASE
WHEN DATEPART(HH, start_time) < 13 THEN RIGHT(CAST(100 + DATEPART(HH, start_time) AS CHAR(3)), 2)
ELSE CAST(DATEPART(HH, start_time) - 12 AS CHAR(2)) END + ':' + RIGHT(CAST(100 + DATEPART(MI, start_time) AS CHAR(3)), 2) +
CASE
WHEN DATEPART(HH, start_time) < 13 THEN ' AM' ELSE ' PM'
END
+ ' - ' +
CASE
WHEN DATEPART(HH, end_time) < 13 THEN RIGHT(CAST(100 + DATEPART(HH, end_time) AS CHAR(3)), 2)
ELSE CAST(DATEPART(HH, end_time) - 12 AS CHAR(2)) END + ':' + RIGHT(CAST(100 + DATEPART(MI, end_time) AS CHAR(3)), 2) +
CASE
WHEN DATEPART(HH, end_time) < 13 THEN ' AM' ELSE ' PM' END AS 'TIMES',
in order to present the two times in one cell in AM/PM format. While this works, I'm wondering if there is a way in Reporting Services layout mode to give a date or time format mode to a cell that will work for two times with a dash in between them, rather than simply for one time. Then I could pull the times in the format that they are stored on the database and use Reporting Services to format them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey,
In a ASP application, which used Access and is now being migrated to SQL 2005, I have a medium-sized query with many inner joins. I optimized the tables, with indexes, etc, and if I run the query on the SSMS it returns me like 55 lines in less then a second. On the other hand, when the ASP page passes the query to the SQL 2005, it takes 10 sec. to get the data. Using the Profiler I found that the sp_fetch is being executed a lot of times. It looks like the query is decomposed in smaller pieces and the rows as selected one by one. I'm using OleDb.
How to make the ADO (the culprit in my opinion) to execute that query at once?
Thank you.

If I try to back up the master database (on C: ) to the backup directory I created on D:, the backup completes successfully. If I try to back up the master database to the MSSQL default backup directory (on C: ), the backup completes successfully.
The SqlServer and SqlAgent processes are both running under a domain user account, and that account has full control of my backup directory on D:. I should also mention that my D: drive has over 100GB free, and the database is only 330MB. It is a simple database model.
I've searched all day today trying to find the solution to this issue, and I can't find anything relevant. Could someone please help me!!! I'm about at my wit's end!

Hi,
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
Thanks,
Ieyasu

I have a "merge" publication created, with only Procedures, Views and Functions. (Note I have other merge publications that replicate the tables from the same database). I keep getting the same error (see -below) on various procedures. I cannot find anything wrong with the procedures themselves. Hi Folks,
I have been struggling with a problem for the last couple days now regarding MSTD and distributed transactions. The main issue is that 3 servers are each sitting in a different domain. Non of the domains trust each other.
As of yesterday, I could get all the SQL 2005 chatting to each other using MSDTC without a problem. However, I have a SQL 2000 box which refuses to work. A normal query across a linked server works fine. A distributed transaction will not work. This is the case from A to B and B to A.
I have tested with DTCPing and it says all is ok.
The error messages are:
SQL 2000 > SQL 2005
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "T-ServerTServer" returned message "No transaction is active.".
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 2
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "T-ServerTServer" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
And the other way round:
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
If watching the DTC monitor, it shows an active transaction then goes back to 0.
All instances are on a 4 node cluster with 3 nodes turned off for the testing.
I have run out of things to try. Most of the symptoms for the above messages are to do with DTC security, the Turn RPC Security Off reg hack. All instances and OS (W2K3) are the latest updates / patches.
As for the 3rd server, SQL 2005, it is happy to talk
Anybody got a gem which I can try?
Edit: Both SQL 2005 servers are x64 while the 2000 is x86
Cheers,
Crispin

I am tying to set up an SQL 2005, SP1 failover cluster on a new set of hardware. Everytime I try to run the install, I get this error
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
------------------------------
Setup failed to start on the remote machine. Check the Task scheduler event log on the remote machine.
I've gone through this doc (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189910.aspx) and checked all of the applicable cautions:
I don't have an antivirus package running.
All of the SQL setup pre-checks run fine.
I have a SQL Group created, with the shared drive as a resource.
NBT is disabled on both heartbeat NIC's.
NBT is explicitly enabled on both external NIC's.
While I do have DDNS running, just to be safe I've pre-created an A record for my SQL VR.
Both nodes are registered in DNS and Setup correctly finds the second node.
In the Application event log on the second node (the one failing...), I get MSI Installer 'Install Started' successes (and sometimes I even get "Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -- Installation completed successfully.")
I am running the install as myself, a Domain Admin and am explicitly added to the Administrators group on both servers.
Remote Registry is running.
Task Scheduler is running.
There is plenty of space everywhere.
All of the Admin shares are enabled.
The node I am running the install from is the owner of all of the cluster groups and resources:
Cluster group
MSDTC group
SQL group
This is all that is in my setup log:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06
==============================
OS Version : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family, Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 3790)
Time : Tue Nov 06 16:45:52 2007
Task did not appear to start on machine: \ERLEW01B: 267013
I'm at a total loss and I'm getting very frustrated...

This problem only occurs after deployment, not when debugging. In the table I am having a problem with I have an ID field designated as the primary key with the identity increment set to 1 and the identity seed set to 1. There is no data in the table when deployed. I can add records to the datagridview control but when I try updating the dataset I get this error indicating that the ID field already has a value of 1 present. If I close the application and re-start it, the exception no longer occurrs when I update the dataset. I am including the code to update the tables incase something is wrong there. Any suggestions?
Private Sub UpdateMemberTable()
Me.Validate()
Me.TblMembersBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TblMembersTableAdapter.Update(Me.ChurchFamilyDataSet.tblMembers)
Me.TblMemberDependentsBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TblMemberDependentsTableAdapter.Update(Me.ChurchFamilyDataSet.tblMemberDependents)
Me.TblMemberContributionsBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TblMemberContributionsTableAdapter.Update(Me.ChurchFamilyDataSet.tblMemberContributions)
End Sub

Hi Guys,
I created a Product database table using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have just added a new column [Picture] to the database table, which of course, should store an image or picture of a product. I am writing to kindly ask you guys for help .
i) How do I include image files into this column [Picture]?
ii) How do I get this image to display on Visual Basic 2005 Express form, so that when a product is selected the product image is displayed accordingly?
Your help much appreciated. Thanks.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

I'm trying to upgrade an existing installation of SSE 2005 to SSE 2005 with Advanced Services SP1 so I can take advantage of Reporting Services. I'm installing on a box that has XP Pro SP2 installed. As prompted by the SSE setup, I had to install IIS. After installing IIS, the setup went along okay until it came time to configure the report server. I chose the default (configure with the default configuration) and I get the following error message:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup
------------------------------
SQL Server Setup failed to obtain system account information for the ASPNET account. To proceed, reinstall the .NET Framework, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=SQLSetup90&EvtType=28126
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------
Anybody know what is causing the error and how to fix it? I tried the above link and it didn't provide any helpful information. Do I really need to reinstall the .Net Framework (I'm hoping not)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

Kind of a newby sql question, but here goes:I have a sql 2005 database that I have a job that runs Sunday morning at 12:30 am. I set it up using SQL Svr Mgt Studio 2005. Under the Management directory I set up Database Mail to work with my local SMTP server. I can send a test email just fine.I then set myself up as an operator with my email address. (Under operators directory) I then went back to the properties of the job I set up, and under 'notification', chose e-mail operator (me) when Job Succeeds. The job runs, itt suceeds, but NO email! It flat out won't work. there are NO entries in teh( email) log for errors either. Anyone? TIA Dan OR is it better to script these jobs using xml? I don't have time to learn a new thing right now, just need it to work!
