I have a smalldatetime column in my sql2000 database table and am sorting ascending on a smalldatetime.
The problem is my results are not in desc order like I want.
Now 5/15/2007 is showing up after 5/9/2007.
I need my dates to sort from the most recent to the latest.
Any help is appreciated.

I am running the following code in my stored procedure and I am not geting the results I need:

Using VS05 SP1 Pro SQL Express€¦
Take a simple stored procedure like the following to return a specific column from a specific row in a data table ....
SELECT fld_IX_UserID
FROM UserIDs
WHERE (fld_UserID_Table_ID = @USERID_TABLE_ID)
It works fine in Store Procedure, and if you create at table adapter to reference it, that works fine as well.
Here is the issue. In the store procedure (i.e. under Server Explorer), when you execute the command to test it, it gives you the correct results. In Edit with Dataset Designer, Table Adapater, if you highlight it, right click preview data, it gives you incorrect results. In code, the table adapter gives you the correct resutls.
In every case, Preview Results for a table adapter built on a stored procedure will give you the wrong results. This is clearly a bug and can result in a log of wasted time.
Am I missing something? FYI, I realize I don't need to use the Table Adapater to execute the above stored procedure, but we are using table adapters for everything to be consistent.

I'm writing a FTS query which needs to search on two different columns.
E.g. Table contains "Location" and "LocationDescription" columns.
Both columns are FT indexed.
The query also uses AND/OR operators to filter out the results.

I'm seeing some change in behavior for a query in SQL Server 2005 (compared to behavior in SQL Server 2000). The query is as follows:

This is dynamic SQL generated by the application when a user requests a report with variable parameters. It works fine in SQL Server 2000. It outputs 47 records which is correct.
In SQL Server 2005, for some reason, the DISTINCT keyword is behaving as a TOP operator and outputs just 1 record. (Results of Showplan Text at the end of this post).
If I modify the query even the slightest bit by:
1) Changing "where (parent = 683691 AND PrimaryDate between '4/15/2006' and '4/22/2006' )
and enabled = 1 )"
To " where (parent = 683691 AND PrimaryDate between '4/15/2006' and '4/22/2006' ) )
and enabled = 1 "
2) Changing " Select distinct tblProjects.ProjectID"
To " Select distinct tblProjects.ProjectID+''"
3) Removing the Distinct keyword, storing into a Temp table, then performing a distinct on the temp table
4) Adding: OPTION (FORCE ORDER)
5) OR completely fixing the query (remove redundant loops, etc)
...it works fine (outputs 47 records). It also works if I created new tables (eg. tMilestones instead of tblMilestones) and inserted about 10 records into each and ran the query referencing these new tables.
I reindexed the tables, updated stats, updated usage, ran DBCC FREEPROCCACHE, changed MaxDOP settings...nothing makes the query behave the way it does in SQL Server 2000 without modifying the query/adding the query hint.
Have you come across this? Any ideas on what might be causing the "TOP" operation. (Somewhat resembles the bug mentioned in this article: http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_910392.aspx - but this was apparently fixed POST-SQL Server 2000 SP4 - so has it not made it into SQL Server 2005 yet?).
I will appreciate any new insights you might have on this issue.

I have a query written in SQL 2000 which returns incorrect result. The query uses left outer join and a view. I read an issue related to this in one of microsoft bug report in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321541.
However, there's a slight difference in the sympton second bullet wherein instead of a expression the query returns a fixed string for one of the column value.
Although the issue mentioned in article seems to be fixed. The later one still seems to be reproducible even with Service Pack 4. However, this issue doesn't appear in SQL Server 2005.
Here's the query to reproduce this error.

I ran this query against the pubs database and it runs successfully
ALTER TABLE publishers ALTER COLUMN state CHAR(25)
I change the table & field names for my db as follows:
ALTER TABLE customquery ALTER COLUMN toclause CHAR(25)
and run against my database and I get the following error - Incorrect syntax near 'COLUMN'.
My column name is correct - I don't know why it would run fine against pubs, but not my db. I do not have quoted identifiers turned on. I have tried using [] around my column name [toclause], but that didn't change anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a report where I am giving the users a parameter so that they can select which field they would like to sort on.The report is also grouping by that field. I have a gruping section, where i have added code to group on the field I want based on this parameter, however I also would like to changing the sorting order but I checked around and I did not find any info.
So here is my example. I am showing sales order info.The user can sort and group by SalesPerson or Customer. Right now, I have code on my dataset to sort by SalesPerson Code and Order No.So far the grouping workds, however the sorting does not.
Any suggestions would help.

SSRS 2012 - VS2010...The report compares two years with a sort order on a value that has been engineered based on text switched to int. Â When sorting A-Z this is the result in the horizontal axis is: 5th, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th..When sorting Z-A the result in the horizontal axis is:5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, PreK..Z-A is correct but A-Z sorting shows 5th as the start and end. Â The magnitude of the PreK location is correct but the label is wrong on the A-Z sort order. Â The sorting is implemented using the Category Group sorting option.

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?

I have an Execute SQL Task that pulls the max date from a sql table.
SELECT max(date_Idx) FROM dbo.FactDailyInventorySnapshot
This field is defined as a smalldatetime. I want to store this max date in a variable in SSIS called LastDate.
Then in a data flow, in an OLE DB Source, I want to use it as a parm in a sql command to compare to a smalldatetime field.
My question is, what type of variable do I declare it in in SSIS, and what is the correct parameter mapping inside of my sql query? I thought I had exhausted all combinations of variable types and parameter types. I have even tried casting it as different data types when I do the exec sql task of getting the max date. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I need to convert a datetime field to smalldatetime.
This particular field we only care about the time portion (an example would be '1899-12-30 13:15:00.000')
For now I created another field say 'newTime' that is smalldatetime, in which I want to "update" to the smalldatetime version of the data. I know this will truncate the ms, but I don't care about that. Also the min date that can be used with smalldatetime is Jan 1 1900.
Not sure how to go about doing this.

I am looking for just the date element of a datetime/smalldatetime col. For example the rows appear in typical datetime/smalldatetime format as:
1999-11-30 07:53:00
I need just "1999-11-30". So how do I strip off the time element? Datepart doesn't seem to be the route to take. I also need to use the date with Datediff so by stripping off the time element, I still need to keep the date element as a date datatype.

My system has SQL Server 7.0. I am retrieving date from an asp page using ADODB, I get the date in 'mm/dd/yy' format when I use smalldatetime as my datatype. I am aware that smalldatetime datatype is supposed to retieve data in 'mm/dd/yyyy' format. Please let me know if you have any inputs on this.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, can someone pass along a date/time function combination? I have a field of smallDateTime being used primarily for the time value - all rows have the same date. e.g., format is 10/22/2005 01:00:00 PM.
What's the easiest function combination to get all rows for day (then night) where day is defined as 6am-10pm (night is midnight-6am and 10pm-midnight). Thought I could use datepart and hh, but it doesn't give me 1 pm as the true miliary time of 13.

The code i am trying to use is as follows:
Select datepart(hh:mm, TimeField1)
from table1;
This gives me an error. I have also tried datepart('hh:mm'... datepart("hh:mm"... and other variations but i cant get anything to work. Thanks in advance for any help!!

10/10/2005 10:00:00 AM --- > 10:00:00 AM
What would be the best approached?

Hello everyone. I am running into some small problems converting a smalldatetime field. I currently have 2005-10-17 00:00:00
in the field but what it to have forward slashes instead of th dash. I tried a few convert methods but not successful.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work?

Used to know how to do this but am having no luck today. I have data coming in from a .txt file that gives me char strings for dates, e.g. 02242003 for Feb. 2, 2003.
Need to whomp this into small datetime with the whole convert/cast thing but I guess I've previously only gone the other way--smalldatetime to char.
