I should add that I've only been developing in SSIS since August 2007.
I have a complicated package, loading about 17 outputs of the XML Source into staging tables. I have been using the error outputs of any standard components I use, out of faith that, if Microsoft provided them, then they should be useful for something. I've been directing all of the error outputs for one of the 17 "tables" from the XML Source into a Union All, and then into an "Error staging table", for each of the 17 outputs. This table includes all of the possible columns, but permits nulls for all of them. It also incldues the ErrorCode and ErrorColumn.
Unfortunately, if these latter two are useful for anyting, I haven't found it yet.
Right now, working with our first "mostly real" data, I'm getting 100% of my input rows written into error tables. Unfortunately, the information in the tables are of limited use in determining what went wrong. For instance, the ErrorColumn seems only to be populated if there was a specific error with a specific column. The Lookup component, doesn't seem to populate ErrorColumn, even if only one column was used for the lookup! No information about the component producing the error output is supplied in the error output, either, which makes it difficult to determine which of the five or so possible error outputs is the one that produced the particular error row.
This proves that I'm missing something simple. How do people handle errors? In my custom components, I learned to use the Fire* methods to produce detailed messages before redirecting the row to the error output, but this sort of thing is not available through the standard components.
Do I really have to create a separate "add useful information to the error output" component, and use it on each error output?
Sorry for the attitude, but just when I think I'm winning, SSIS brings me back down to earth!
I'm struggling to design a music database to track artists/bands, albums, songs, recordings etc. I want to identify the fields (including either solo-artist, band or perhaps duet) that make a Recording entity unique. I've considered that Band, Song and Date Recorded would make a unique key for a Recording (though that won't account for multiple recordings on the same day). I believe a Recording should be unique to a Band or a Solo-Artist (but not both, so which?).
I've considered making a Recordings table, a Bands table and a Band_Recordings table (the Beatles may have multiple versions of Yesterday). That would mean Ringo Starr becomes a band! Not quite right. I could call the Band table Acts or Performed_By to include both solo artists and bands but that seems wrong. What would go in the fields First_Name & Last_Name for the Beatles?
I would like to be able to have an Artists table (Ringo, John, etc), a Bands table (Beatles) and a Band_Artists table (Beatles/Ringo, Beatles/John, etc). With this scenario what foreign key lands in Recordings? Artist_ID? Band_ID? Both? And again, what fields combine to uniquely identify a Recording?
Another part of my problem is that for one Recording (Beatles/Yesterday), I'd like to also identify it as a Paul McCartney Recording (or John, George or Ringo) in addition to being a Beatles Recording.
I'm stuck! Certainly this type of database is often created, but I can't see how. Any answers or guidance is much appreciated.

I have created a local user on Report Server Computer and the user has the administrative rights.
When i try to connect Report Server (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/reportserver) with this user's credantials. (ReportServer directory security is set -only- to Basic Authentication. ).

I am currently designing a SSIS package to integrate data into a data warehouse fact table. This fact table has about 70 columns among which 17 are foreign keys for dimension tables.
To insert data in that table, I have to make several transformations and lookups. Given the fact that the lookups I have to make are a little complicated, I have about 70 tasks in my Data Flow.
I know it's a lot, but I can't find a way to make it simpler. It seems I really need all these tasks.
Now, the problem is that every new action I try to make on the package takes a lot of time. At design time, everything is very slow. My processor is eavily loaded each time I change a single setting in one of the tasks, and executing the package in debug mode takes for ages. If I take a look at the size of my package file on disk, it's more than 3MB.
Hence my question : Are there any limitations in terms of number of columns or number of tasks that can be processed within a Data Flow ?
If not, then do you have any idea why it's so slow ?

I have a large table of customers. I would like to add a column that contains an integer, unique to that customer. The trick is that this file contains many duplicate customers, so I want the duplicates to all have the same number between them.the numbers dont have to be sequential or anything, just like customers having the same one.

It should give week 46, but it gives 47

I have, what i think, is a unique problem that i'm hoping some of you can help me on.
I need to create a record number that is incremented by 1 whenever someone adds a new record to the database. For example, records numbering 1,2,3 are in the database. When the users adds a new record, SQL takes the last recordno, 3 in this case, and adds 1 to it thus producing 4.
Also, i need to have the ability to replace deleted record numbers with new ones. Using the example above, say a user deletes record number 2. Whenever someone adds a new record, sql would see the missing number and assign the new record that number.
I hope i'm making sense here. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Any articles on the web that someone could point me to?

I have a table with a primary key being a bigint and its set to auto increment (or identity or whatever ms calls it). Is there anyway I can get the ID number that will be assigned to the next Insert before I insert it? I want to use that ID number within another field when inserted.

However, my procedures are returning 1 and 2 yet working just fine as far as I can tell. There is not exception popping up in SQL Profiler either.
