Sql 2005 Bogus Error?!?!?! 'Column Does Not Allow Insert Of NULLS'...(Duh!)

Oct 31, 2007

I have been battling this for 2 days! I could write a book on what does not work.

I have even tried entering the data manually through the 'Open Table' SSMS function from the Object Explorer. I only have 5 records in the table. The first 4 I added a week or so ago during dev from the ASP.Net 2.0 (w VB) website that is the front end for this DB. I use a DAL between the site and DB.

I added two new fields the other day and everything seemed to work fine. Now I get 'Siteid CANNOT BE NULL'.

I abandoned attempts to Insert from the Website. The following was done directly through SSMS.
I switched all of the columns (except PK) to allow nulls. I could add/update a record, no problem, even with directly typed data in some fields. I could also add one with only one field populated (some have defaults, some do not).

Here is the table code:

USE [bro122]

Do Not Keep NULLS Using SSIS Bulk Insert Task - Insert Empty Strings Instead Of NULLS

May 15, 2008

I have two SSIS packages that import from the same flat file into the same SQL 2005 table. I have one flat file connection (to a comma delimited file) and one OLE DB connection (to a SQL 2005 Database). Both packages use these same two Connection Managers. The SQL table allows NULL values for all fields. The flat file has "empty values" (i.e., ,"", ) for certain columns.

The first package uses the Data Flow Task with the "Keep nulls" property of the OLE DB Destination Editor unchecked. The columns in the source and destination are identically named thus the mapping is automatically assigned and is mapped based on ordinal position (which is equivalent to the mapping using Bulk Insert). When this task is executed no null values are inserted into the SQL table for the "empty values" from the flat file. Empty string values are inserted instead of NULL.

The second package uses the Bulk Insert Task with the "KeepNulls" property for the task (shown in the Properties pane when the task in selected in the Control Flow window) set to "False". When the task is executed NULL values are inserted into the SQL table for the "empty values" from the flat file.

So using the Data Flow Task " " (i.e., blank) is inserted. Using the Bulk Insert Task NULL is inserted (i.e., nothing is inserted, the field is skipped, the value for the record is omitted).

I want to have the exact same behavior on my data in the Bulk Insert Task as I do with the Data Flow Task.

Using the Bulk Insert Task, what must I do to have the Empty String values inserted into the SQL table where there is an "empty value" in the flat file? Why & how does this occur automatically in the Data Flow Task?

From a SQL Profile Trace comparison of the two methods I do not see where the syntax of the insert command nor the statements for the preceeding captured steps has dictated this change in the behavior of the inserted "" value for the recordset. Please help me understand what is going on here and how to accomplish this using the Bulk Insert Task.

Bogus FK Violation On Insert - Transaction Failure?

May 23, 2008

I have 14 beta users on a PPC application based on .NET CF 2.0 and SQLCE 3.0. Data is sent back and forth as XML via web services. One user cannot complete the initial download - he receivces the following error every time:

A foreign key value cannot be inserted because a corresponding primary key value does not exist. [ Primary key constraint name = FK_jobtask_job ]

I have run the queries for this user and verified that no task has a JobID that is not in the Job table. I am also able to successfully complete the initial download as the user in the Mobile 5.0 PPC emulator. His device has 130 MB of free storage space and 20 MB program space (my emulator has 11 MB storage and 70 MB program).

The initial download for this user is about 14 MB of XML, all of which will be inserted in the SDF under a single transaction. Although the SDF was only 4.75 MB on my emulator (after successfully downloading as this user) I am wondering if there is an unreported error in the handling of the transaction or its temp file that causes the error he receives. Frankly, I've run out of ideas. Does anyone have details about transaction temp file size limits or any other ideas that might lead to a resolution?

SQL Server 2008 :: Column Does Not Allow Nulls / INSERT Fails

Jan 4, 2010

I'm a developer working on PHP - MSSQL 2008 combined platform. While running a procedure from a webpage I'm encountering the error as below.

My Query:
DECLARE @ReturnValue INT
EXEC @ReturnValue = S_AccountsBatchActivation @FirstName='abc', @LastName='abc', @Address='abc', @City='abc', @State='abc', @Country='India', @Phone='1', @BatchId='6502'
SELECT ReturnValue=@ReturnValue

Error
Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'TariffId', table 'tempdb.dbo.#tbl
column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

Though the same query when run from SSMS runs fine:

Execute S_AccountsBatchActivation
@FirstName='abc',
@LastName='abc',
@Address='abc',
@City='abc',
@State='abc',
@Country='India',
@Phone='11',
@BatchId=6502

[code]...

On my end I've tried out with ANSI_NULL AND ANSI_NULLS settings being both ON and OFF but it didn't worked.

Column Does Not Allow Nulls

Nov 4, 2007

 Hi,This should be straight forward, but I've searched high and low on the net.I have a FORM which allows me to INSERT data, SQL Server 2005 backend. I populate the all the mandatory fields. But when I click on the Insert button, it won't let me save and says:Column 'PERSONAL_ID' does not allow nullsI'm
using tableadapters, business logic layers etc. and pausing clearly
shows that the values from the form are being passed to the procedure

HOW DO I: Insert Nulls Into SQL DateTime Field Stored In SQL DB From A Web UI Textbox

Mar 29, 2006

I’m looking for feedback on the Best/Right way to Insert nulls into SQL dateTime field in SQL DB from a web UI textbox.

 Option 1:     Presently implemented:
 Dim dtFollowUpDate = IIf(dtDateFollowUp.Text = "", System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDateTime.Null, dtDateFollowUp.Text)
Although ithis does what is needed it generates the following inner exception

ParamValue    {System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDateTime} Object[System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDateTime] {System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDateTime}            System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDateTimeDayTicks
<error: an exception of type: {System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlNullValueException} occurred>            Integer IsNull   True     Boolean

Option 2:
Dim dtFollowUpDate = IIf(dtDateFollowUp.Text = "", System.DBNull.Value, dtDateFollowUp.Text)
 No exceptions, no problems that I have seen yet.

Option 3:
Dim dtNull As System.Data.SqlTypes.INullable
Dim dtFollowUpDate = IIf(dtDateFollowUp.Text = "", dtNull, dtDateFollowUp.Text)
 No exceptions, no problems that I have seen yet.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

SQL Server 2008 :: Is There Any Way To Override Explicit Nulls On INSERT / UPDATE

Nov 2, 2015

If a column is set to allow nulls I know that a constraint can be used to supply a default (i.e. GetDate() ) when no value is provided but what about when an explicit NULL is provided in an INSERT or UPDATE statement?Is there any way other then an AFTER trigger to substitute a value for an explicitly provided NULL? In other words, assuming that dtAsof is a NULL enabled column, is there any way to over ride what the following will do to MYTABLE:

INSERT MYTABLE(sCol1, sCol2, sCol3, dtAsOf)
SELECT 'a', 'b', 'c', NULL

If there's no way to do this in SQL Server 2008R2 then what about later versions of SQL Server? Do any more recent versions have a way to deal with this? We have a third party app that uses a SQL Server back end and many of the tables have columns for storing audit like data such as date/time but many are left to NULL values and I'd really like to fix that in as passive a way as possible so as to not break the app that uses the database. I know a constraint with a default can be sued to over ride a null but not when a null is explicitly provided.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Specific Column Matching With Nulls

Apr 9, 2015

I'm working on a join between two tables where I only want one row returned... I'm matching on two columns between two tables. One of those columns in the target table could be null. I only want one record returned.

create table #vehicle(id int, vehiclemake varchar(10), vehiclemodel varchar(10), classtype varchar(1))
create table #class(id int, classtype varchar(1), value int)

insert into #vehicle values(1, 'AUDI', 'R8', 'A')
insert into #vehicle values(2, 'AUDI', null, 'B')

insert into #class values(1, 'A', 100)
insert into #class values(2, 'B', 1)

[Code] ....

Using the above example, if VehicleModel is anything other than 'R8' is specified then I want it to return the other class type record.

This is going to be used as a join within a bigger statement, so I'm not sure ordering and returning top 1 is going to work.

In this case Primary Key is Identity column. I do not include Idenity column in Insert statement.

Incidently SQL server machines had cluster failure couple of days before. I am not sure whether it has anything to do with it.

I see this error randomly.

How should I debug it

Problem With NULLS In Data Flow Vs Identity Column

Dec 12, 2007

I'll preface this by saying I'm pretty new to SSIS; I'm coming over from Coldfusion and don't have much DTS experience to draw from either. That said....

I've got a package that I run to migrate data from a bunch of older databases into a "flat" new schema. The new schema is not identical to the old, in other words, so it's not a simple mapping of existing columns. All the data flow tasks have finally gotten to a working state, with much trial-and-error. Now, suddenly one of the tasks is throwing this error:
"...Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'the_id', table 'the_table'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails."

The column is an identity column in the new table; it is NOT NULL as it is the primary key. I've triple-checked that identity is on. Basically it's generated anew each time this package is run. In the data flow task, mappings are set to ignore for this column; also, Keep identity and Keep nulls are on (although since this column is not in the source I can't see how this affects anything.)

(***For anyone wondering why in the heck I'd need this column at all, offhand I can't recall if later tasks use it or not...I'm actually wondering if it's even needed in this read-only table if it's not used as a foreign key somewhere else...however, I'd like to figure out this issue regardless... )

I've had a hard time finding anyone with the same problem out there...usually people with NULL issues simply are trying to insert into a NOT NULL column. The big difference here is that the column is identity.

Thanks,
Rick

Bulk Insert Problem, Fails With Column Too Long Error

May 6, 2008

Hello All,

I'm having a problem doing a bulk insert on a tab delimited text file into mssql 2005 using either bulk insert or bcp.
When using the following bulk insert command I get the "The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 2" error.
I have tried

Code Snippet

The data file only has data for the first 10 columns of a table with over 100 columns.

First 10 table columns have the format of

Nulls In SQL 2005

Aug 10, 2006

Hello,

I have a varchar(20) field which stores a value or empty string.

I have noticed that if the value is NULL and I use is null in my query, the query runs very fast. However If I also include in my query a check for an empty string (len(rtrim(field)) = 0) the query is much slower.

Is it a good idea to force the empty strings to null and if Yes is there an automatic way in sql 2005 (maybe a trigger) to update all empty strings to null.

Thanks, I just need some advice.

Transact SQL :: Using Bulk Insert - Invalid Column Number In Format File Error

Jun 5, 2015

I try to import data with bulk insert. Here is my table:

CREATE TABLE [data].[example](
 col1 [varchar](10) NOT NULL,
 col2 [datetime] NOT NULL,
 col3 [date] NOT NULL,
 col4 [varchar](6) NOT NULL,
 col5 [varchar](3) NOT NULL,

[Code] ....

My format file:

10.0
7
1  SQLCHAR 0  10 "@|@" 2 Col2 ""
1  SQLCHAR 0  10 "@|@" 3 Col3 ""
2  SQLCHAR 0  6 "@|@" 4 Col4 Latin1_General_CI_AS

[Code] .....

The first column should store double (in col2 and col3) in my table

My file:
Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5,Col6,Col7

2015-04-30@|@MDDS@|@AED@|@EUR@|@4.107276@|@2015-04-30@|@MDDS

My command:
bulk insert data.example
from 'R:epoolexample.csv'
WITH(FORMATFILE = 'R:cfgexample.fmt' , FIRSTROW = 2)

Get error:
Msg 4823, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Cannot bulk load. Invalid column number in the format file "R:cfgexample.fmt".

I changed some things as:
used ";" and "," as column delimiter
changed file type from UNIX to DOS and adjusted the format file with "
" for row delimiter

Removed this line from format file
1  SQLCHAR 0  10 "@|@" 2 Col2 ""
Nothing works ....

SQL Server 2005, INSERT INTO, Error Message

May 8, 2007

The following function I am trying to design is to INSERT data into a SQL Server 2005 database. It is called from a different function, parse_file();, which is looping through a .CSV file and returning each record as an array to recordInsert();. Here is the function code and SQL syntax

PHP Code:

function recordInsert($rs)

    $host = 'Driver={SQL Server}; SERVER=SERVER; DATABASE=DATABASE';
    $user = 'USER';
    $pass = 'PASS';
    $conn = odbc_connect($host, $user, $pass);
    $query = "INSERT INTO db.table VALUES ( {$rs['MODEL']}, {$rs['PID']}, {$rs['YEAR']}, {$rs['TOTAL_COST']},
                                                    {$rs['PARTS_COST']}, {$rs['LABOR_COST']}, {$rs['PROBCD']}, {$rs['FAIL_PART']},
                                                    {$rs['FAIL_PART_NAME']}, {$rs['MILES']}, {$rs['PROBLEM']}, {$rs['CAUSE']},
                                                    {$rs['REMEDY']}, {$rs['CLAIM_DATE']}, {$rs['APPRV_DATE']}, {$rs['FAIL_DATE']},
                                                    {$rs['SOLD_DATE']}, {$rs['UNIT_AGE']}, {$rs['DEALER']}, {$rs['DEALER_NAME']},
                                                    {$rs['ST']}, {$rs['ZIP']}, {$rs['CLAIM']}, {$rs['BTC']}, {$rs['PART_2']},
                                                    {$rs['PART_3']}, {$rs['PART_4']}, {$rs['PART_4']}, {$rs['PART_5']},
                                                    {$rs['PART_6']}, {$rs['JOBCD1']}, {$rs['JOBCD2']}, {$rs['JOBCD3']},
                                                    {$rs['JOBCD4']}, {$rs['PRLN']}, {$rs['RUN_DATE']} );";

    $exec = odbc_exec($conn, $query);

    if(!$exec)
    {
        echo "Error: " . odbc_error($exec) . "<br />
" . odbc_errormsg() . "<br />
";
    }
    else
    {
        echo "Executed.<br />
";
    }

parse_file("file.csv", csv);

I am receiving the following error when attempting to INSERT into the database.

Code:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The name "YFM700RVL" is not permitted in this context. Valid expressions are constants, constant expressions, and (in some contexts) variables. Column names are not permitted.

I have tried googling the error and since it is a long error, it has been hard trying to find an answer. One solution I found (which wasn't a solution) was to add the '@' infront of the variables. It did not work.

Kick in the right direction?

Thanks.

Aug 3, 2000

I have a select statement which has to convert some date fields stored

select @rldate = @rldate + 2
select patient_.df_admit_date, patient_.df_ppdb_date from patient_

Testing Permutations Of Nulls And Not Nulls

Feb 17, 2008

is there an elegant way to use one equals sign in a where clause that returns true when both arguments are null, and returns true when neither is null but both are equal and returns false when only one is null?

Error Trying To Modify Column With SQL Server Express 2005

Mar 6, 2008

I am tearing my hair out with this!!

I have created a DB and up until yesterday I have been using SQL commands to add/remove tables, columns, constraints etc. However today when I attempt to modify the datatype of a column using

alter table Person modify Gender nchar(2)

I get this error

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

Incorrect syntax near 'modify'.

I can still add colums but get the same error if I try to drop them and I can amend the tables in any way via the Design view so I don't think it's permission related.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Transact SQL :: Selecting Latest Date But Over Another Date Column Including Nulls?

Nov 26, 2015

CREATE TABLE #Dateissue
(ID int,
Code nvarchar (20),
Datein datetime,
Declined datetime )

[Code] .....

I have a table here.  I want  find a way of getting the latest date, when the code is the same.  If the Declined date is null.  Then I still want the latest date.  E.g. ID 3.

If the declined date is filled in.  Then I want to get the row, when the Datein column value is greater then the declined date only.

I tried grouping it by max date, but   i got an error message when trying this out.  Against the code

WHERE MAX(Datein) > Declined

An aggregate may not appear in the WHERE clause unless it is in a subquery contained in a HAVING clause or a select list, and the column being aggregated is an outer reference.  What do I need to do to get both my outputs working?

Invalid Column Name 'rowguid'. Error When Generating Snapshot For Merge Replication SQL Server 2005

May 15, 2007

Hi there,

I have setup merge replication which successfully synchronizes with a group of desktop users using SQL Compact Edition.

However now I have setup Article Filters and when I attempt to regenerate the snapshot I get the following error:

Invalid column name 'rowguid'.

Failed to generate merge replication stored procedures for article 'AssignedCriteria'.

When I look at publication properties at the Articles page.. All my tables have the rowguid uniqueidentifier successfully added to tables and selected as a compulsory published column, apart from the table above "AssignedCriteria".. Even when I attempt to select this column in the article properties page and press ok, when I come back it is deselected again. ( The Rowguid column is however physically added to the table)

I have scripted the publication SQL and then totally reinstalled from scratch, including the database but for some reason it doesn't like this table. I remove the article filters, but still this "rowguid" is never "selected" in article properties.

We are using Uniqueidentifiers in other columns as well for historical reasons, but this doesn't appear to be a problem in other tables..

DDL For this problematic table is as follows

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[AssignedCriteria](

[AssignedCriteria] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,

[CriteriaName] [varchar](255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,

[TargetScore] [numeric](5, 0) NULL,

[HRPlan] [uniqueidentifier] NULL,

[ActualScore] [numeric](18, 0) NULL,

[Criteria] [uniqueidentifier] NULL,

[Employee] [uniqueidentifier] NULL,

[IsActive] [bit] NULL,

[addDate] [datetime] NULL,

[totalscore] [numeric](5, 0) NULL,

[isCalc] [bit] NULL,

[Weight] [decimal](18, 2) NULL,

[ProfileDetail] [uniqueidentifier] NULL,

[rowguid] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [MSmerge_df_rowguid_7FF25DF903B6415FBFF24AC954BC88E4] DEFAULT (newsequentialid()),

CONSTRAINT [PK_AssignedCriteria] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

(

[AssignedCriteria] ASC

)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]

) ON [PRIMARY] TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]

Thanks.
