Sql 2005 On Network
Nov 8, 2007
I'm converting an old vb6 application with Access to VB 2005 and SQL server 2005
I installed SQL Express 2005 on the server and my application running from the the server works fine, however when I run the app from a WS I get the following error:
"An attemp to attach an auto-named database for the \xbladec3 Data.mdf failed. A DAtabase with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share"
Checking the server TCP, pipes and all that stuff are enabled.
This is how I Open the Database:
Str_DB = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;" & _
"AttachDBFilename=" & Data_Path & "C3 Data.mdf;" & _
"Integrated Security=sspi;Connect timeout=30;User instance=True"
I've tried Data_Path with Y: and \xblade but none seems to work.
HELP !

Hi Every one,
I am using .Net 1.1 for my web application.
And my database server is SQL Server 2005.
My application is running fine, as i can login to it and also able to view pages. But when i open Order management(having 3K records) its give me error,
General Network Error. Check your network documentation
I have also searched many articles and tried following solutions but nothing working
- connectiontimeout = 0, max pool size = 7500/100, pooling = false
- SSL disabling enforce security false as mentioned in microsoft kb article.
And there's nothing any issue with hardware/firewall as my application's login and other forms are working fine(which use same database with same connection string)
Can any one please help me to solve this error?
With Regards,

Does anyone know of the procedure, steps that need to be followed to allow installing SQL 2005 Express from a network? Since SQL 2005 express requires .NET 2 and the MSI engine 3.1 and MDAC 2.8 it is a real problem pushing it from a network such as active directory using an AIP (Administrator Installation Point).

Hello all,
We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.
This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.
We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:
<%
' FileName="Connection_ado_conn_string.htm"
' Type="ADO"
' HTTP="false"
' Catalog=""
' Schema=""
MM_connSpankMSSQL_STRING = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=SERVER_IP,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ourmaindb_1;User ID=ourmaindb_1;Password=hotcookies;"
%>
Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.
The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.
Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.
Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Hi
While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears.
Does somebody knows why?
I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.
Thanks!!

I am working as a consultant on a project to upgrade an Access 2000 db to SQL Server. My client has bought off on everything, and they're ordering a new dedicated box this week. They're getting a rackmount machine running Windows Server and SQL Server 2005.
My expectation was that their IT people would take care of administrative & security issues such as setting the machine up, installing & starting SQL Server and configuring the proper accounts. Suprisingly though, they're going to mount the machine in the rack, turn it on and let me do all of this.
I'm new at SQL Server, but I'm comfortable working with database objects (tables, views, etc...) I'm not so comfortable with the networking or administrative side of things. It took me a couple of hours to be able to connect to the DB on my desktop machine over my home network. You can see why I'm intimidated at the prospect of getting things integrated & running on a pretty large corporate network.
Maybe I'm overblowing this, but this just gives me the willies.
Are my fears justified? Am I going to be ok if I just follow the standard procedures for allowing TCP/IP connections to the server? Am I going to have to deal with firewalls? (I think I know the answer - "it depends on their network.." - that's what I'm scared of.. I don't know anything about their network, and I don't know enough about networking in general to figure things out..)
Are there any other best practices that I should follow for a fresh install?

Hi,
This is a very bizzare one. I have installed SQL many times and never had this problem. I had a user self install SQL 2005, as it turns out, he installed the wrong components, so a co-worker uninstalled it for him. We followed the support doc for the uninstall, because we had errors when tried to remove it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967
After, we were able to re-install (we installed this time via the command line), but for some odd reason we have completely lost the ability to print to ANY network printer. I didn't think this was possible, but I tried it on my machine and now I too am unable to print!
A couple of details:
Both machines:
XP-SP2
HP dx7400
Printers: a variety of HP Networked Printers (can't print to any)
I have added and removed the printers multiple times and tried adding via a local port... no luck
There is no error in the event log
If I try to print a test page, I get an error box that says "Test Page Failed to Print"
Since there are no real errors for the print issue, I am struggling to find a solution. Has anyone ever seen this??
Thanks!

I have recently upgraded my databases from SQL 2000 to 2005. In 2000, I could set the network affinity so that sql server was only accessible from one of the two network cards. I cannot find how to do this in sql 2005. Is there a way?
In my installation, I have two network cards in each server. The "A" network adapter connects to the "A" hub, and the "B" adapter connected to the "B" hub. Traffic on trhe "B" hub is my private, non-routable network, This is where I want the SQL Server traffic to run. The A hub traffic is the public network. This gives me the ability to isolate SQL Server from the outside world.

Hi,
I need to find out whether SQL Server client components are installed on a machine through my application.
For that I was expecting "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90" registry key. BUT If I install just native client drivers, this key is not getting created.
What could be another approch to determine whether system has required client components.
Also I need to list all the SQL Server 2005 servers available in the network. (Similar to the Servers combo box being populated while DSN creation in ODBC Admin tool). There are several approches.
1) Use NetServerEnum API
2) Use SQLBrowseConnect ODBC API
3) Use SQLDMO Object
4) OSQL utility.
Which one I should use VC++ (2005)?
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I have SQL 2005 running on OS 2003. I am trying to take backup on a network drive (NAS box).
I have logged into the OS2003 machine as ADSadministrator and the same for SQL 2005. I have given full control to ADSadministrator on the network drive of the NAS box.
When I try to take a backup, I get the following error :
Operating system error = 5(Access is denied)
Any idea what is wrong?
Thanks in advance.

I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.
I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.
I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.
I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB. I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the general network error.
The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:
Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.
Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

Info: CE.Net 4.2

SQL Server 2005
First of all, sorry for the cross post but i need a quick answer on this.
I am executing a CLR Stored Procedure from a Windows Mobile device and regularly get a general network error.
The stored procedure cycles through up to 70 tables, checking for any records between two dates. The LastUpdate field is in each one of the 70 tables and is indexed.
The mobile device regularly reports general network error, which is due to a timeout. Command timeout is now set to 10 minutes but the timeout still occurs.
The stored procedure appears to get stuck on a particular table. If I rebuild the index on this table, it will get past it but then get stuck on the next table.
I set up a maintenance plan to run every 5 minutes (extreme, I know!) but the indices would appear to corrupt (without any activity on the table) in less than this interval.
However, running the exact same query from SQL Server Management Studio works correctly every time and usually within 10 seconds.
I€™m sure that it has something to do with the indices but cannot seem to resolve the issue. It€™s even more confusing how only the mobile device is affected!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Say that I have 100,000 attributes/feature selections for my SQL Server Neural Network Algorithm.
Customer Attr1 Attr2 Attr3 ..... Atr100000
==============================
Jack 1 0 1 ..... 1
Sam 0 1 1 ...... 0
Mary 1 1 0 ...... 1
Knowing the fact I can't fit those info on a table and SQL Server's Neural Network does not support table prediction . What's an alternative to use Neural Network in SQL Server 2005 to solve my problem?
Please assist!

We have a SQL2000 database (Publisher) replicating inserts and updates across a 10Mb link to a SQL 2005 database (Subscriber). The Publisher has two tables we are interested in, 1 with 50 columns and 1 with 15. Both tables have 6 insert/update triggers that fire when a change is made to update columns on the publisher database.
We have set up a pull transactional replication from the Subscriber to occur against the Publisher every minute. We have limited the subscription/replication configuration to Publsih 6 columns from table 1 and 4 from table 2. Any change occuring on any other columns in the Publisher are of no interest. The SQL 2005 database has a trigger on table 1 and table 2 to insert values into a third table. There are around 7,000 insert/updates on table 1 and 28,000 on table 2 per day. All fields in the tables are text.
We are seeing "excessive" network traffic occuring of approximately 1MB per minute (approx 2GB per 24 hrs). We also see that the Distributor databases are getting very large -- upto around 30GB and growing until they get culled. We have reduced the culling intrval from 72 hrs to 24 hours to reduce the size.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this "excessive" network traffic can be minimised and how the distributor database size can be minimised. I think that maybe they are both related?
Thanks,
Geoff

I don't recall assigning any sql specific certificates. The reason I'm trying to run this as a network user is because an application on a remote windows server requires it.
After starting the service back running as local system as it was before, I went into the
SQL Server Management Studio Express and edited the properties for this new network user I wish to run the service as. I gave him full access including checking all grants in securables.
I now see a bit of a difference in the event logs with these errors.

Hi,
We have (after several weeks of testing in all kind of environments) send out a new version of our application to several of our customers. Within days problems where drippin in; After looking for the problem on various customer situations we found a problem which I think is rather disturbing and very odd. I'll describe the situation, on which we finally managed to recreate the problem, here.
In my problem I use the following configuration:
Windows 2003 (standard edition) AD network with 2 domain controllers, multiple Windows XP workstations, some without SQL instances, some with SQL 2000 instances, some with SQL 2005 instances and even one with SQL 7 running.
All run a 32 bit OS.
Tools to reproduce:
ListSQLSvr application (found on SQLDev.net) to enumerate the instances.
Problem description:
--------------------------------------------------
I am running the machine called DEV001, which has SQL 2000 (instancename DRUMIS) and SQL 7.0 (has no instancename so this is the root instance) installed.
In any 'normal' situation all the runnings SQL instances are visible on the network like this:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X

ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS

INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
When I turn the SQL 2005 Browser service off on the machine called DEV002 the list looks like:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194

INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
Notice that the browser service might be off on DEV002, you can still see the EXPRESS instance and a new root instance has appeared (though it doesn't exist!)??
After restarting the Browser service all is OK again.
When I turn on Hide Server in the SQL 2000 TCP/IP properties (or turn it on in the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerDRUMISMSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLibTcp] "TcpHideFlag"=dword:00000001) on the DEV002 computer something real scary is happening..
The list looks as follows:
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICE
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
When someone has entered a database (for example the backoffice database on INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT) the list looks as follows (for a short moment; 5 secs or so):
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICEDEVELOP;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194

SUP001
Notice now that ALL instances are gone and no extended information is available. In the Query Analyser and in the SQL Management Studio when browsing you'll see this as well!
When someone is accessing a database instance it appears for a few seconds again.
Since our installation and applications rely on selecting a existing instance it will fail in the above situations (or at least not showing all available instances).
In my opinion this is a bug somewhere!
Note that even when the SQL Services are stopped on DEV002 (leaving the Browser service running) it still seems to block out ALL instance on the ENTIRE network!
I don't mind that one INSTANCE or even the entire MACHINE is hidden from the network, but ALL instances on ALL machines??
And the SQL Browser issue also worries me a bit since it does not stop the possibily to browse the SQL instances; it removes the SQL2000 instances but adds a root instance which doesn't even exist! Also the extended info is stripped.
Can anyone help me solve this/advise?
Also mind that in any situation there might run a lot of computers with a lot of SQL instances and I cannot tell our customers to find which machine has the SQL TCP/IP properties set to Hide...
It even seems that in some situations SBS 2003 does the hiding automatically on Install? And if so, when and why?

Hello. I am called Narsiste.
I have a problem of configuration in SQL server 2005 express train. In fact, I do not know how to make the configuration to tackle the databases SQL server 2005 express train which are on a station has starting from a station B (both being in a network LAN).
But I read in the module of €œconfiguration of the surface of exposure for the services and connections - localhost€? that €œBy defect, the editions Express train, Evaluation and Developer SQL SERVER 2005 authorize only local connections.€?. As it is BY DEFECT, I said myself that it will have to be changed a parameter so that access TCP/IP can go on this version of SQL SERVER.
Here is the message which I have:
€œAn error occurred during the establishment of a connection to the waiter. At the time of connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure can be due to the fact that the default settings of SQL Server do not authorize remote connections. (Provider: Interfaces network SQL, error: 26 - Error during the localization of the waiter/the authority specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)€?.
If somebody encountered this problem in the past, that he wants to inform well me of the solution which he found for this last. Thank you.

Hi,
I have an SSIS package designed to copy across a file from local machine to a location on the network.
The SSIS package works fine when I run it directly run it in the Designer, ie, it copies over the file to the network.
But when I run the package through the Job server agent, it fails giving me a validation error on the network path..
Does it have to do with the permissions of the User account used here? Could anyone please provide any information on this....
Thanks

I have 2 different servers that run nightly backup jobs to a network drive using the UNC format. I am noticing the larger databases encountering the following errors on a regular basis
Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
'\fnfssql3SQLBackupsMNSQL05<database>.BAK'. Operating system error 64(The specified network name is no longer available.).
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE <database>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.
There are 5 databases on this server all backed up by the same job and 3 of them wortk fine and 2 of them fail so it is not a permissions problem. Have there been any problems with backing up to a network drive in 2005?

I'm green on this networking stuff so any help is greatly appreciated.
I have setup my home computer as a server and assigned a static IP to it. I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer and allowed remote connections to it through the Surface Area Config tool, added port 1433 TCP and 1434 UDP to firewall's exception list, and started the SQL Server Browser service.
Now I can't seem to remote connect to this SQL Server from my office network. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks!!

Hi!
I bought the book €œData Mining with SQL Server 2005€?, but I can€™t find the solution to a problem I have.
I want to retrieve from C# the logistic regression Attribute Value (AV) Scores for the Logistic Regression Algorithm. I can see the Scores from the Microsoft Logistic Regression Viewer (the same of Neural Network Viewer), but I cannot retrieve them via DMX, OLEDB or similar.
Otherwise, is there a formula that I can use to compute that score from the coefficient, support, or probability values of the Attribute Value pair (I can read this values from DMX)?
I can access to them via DMX:
NODE_DISTRIBUTION -> SUPPORT and PROBABILITY ATTRIBUTE_VALUE...
with a query like
SELECT FLATTENED (SELECT ATTRIBUTE_NAME, ATTRIBUTE_VALUE FROM NODE_DISTRIBUTION WHERE VALUETYPE = ... ) FROM [MyModel].CONTENT WHERE NODE_TYPE ....
Thanks in advance
Regards,
Marco

Hi All,
I've developed an application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 Express database. I created a DSN to connect to the database through ODBC. Currently, I am testing locally and everything works fine.
I would now like to install my application on another workstation and connect remotely to the database located on my development machine.
The client workstation does not have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on it because I would just like my application to connect remotely by creating the DSN and using ODBC. What I'm missing here are the database drivers. The "SQL Natice Client" is not available on this client workstation. How can I deploy the necessary drivers with my installation file so that I may create the required DSN name using the SQL Native Client driver?
Thanks!

Can multiple instances of SQL 2005 Express attach to the same database files on a network share? I have seen this done before with MSDE where the database files are stored on the server, but instead of having a SQL server running on the network and then connecting to it, only the database files exist on the network share and the users connect through MSDE running on the local machine. Is this possible with SQL2005Express? I do not have the ability to share an SQL instance from one workstation to another nor do I have the ability to install an instance on the corporate server. Is it as simple as creating the database and storing the files on the share then attaching the database to the SQL Instance on each workstation?
