Sql Express Web Sync, Can't Find Snapshot?
Nov 12, 2007
I'm using RMO to set up MergePullSubscription to a SQL Express database, the server is running SS2k5.
The subscription gets created just fine, and web sync seems to be working, going to replisapi.dll?diag in my new virtual directory returns no errors.
When creating the publication on the server (using management studio for this) the snapshot is created, and stored in the snapshot share. Creating the publication seems to go without any issues. When I open the "Configure Web Synchronization" wizard, and point it to my new snapshot share, it ALWAYS says that the snapshot folder appears to be empty, which it isn't.
I get an error when I attempt to sync the databases that I believe is caused by Web Sync not being able to find the snapshot. Here's the output from triggering the sync via RMO.

That's it, always end up with "Cannot connect to distributor".
I'm using a free cert for testing, hence the non-FQDN name SandBox, but I have added the root CA to my machine, and don't get any cert errors when visiting the ?diag page in my browser.
Any ideas? I've been beating my head against the same wall for 2 days now!
Thanks in advance,

Hello Everyone,
I have a publication on a Sql 2000 (SP4) server. This publication has dynamic filtering enabled. What I want to do is create an interface which will generate a new dynamic snapshot based on filtering input from users. So far I can create the dynamic snapshot easy enough and I can see the filtered results on a Sql 2000 subscriber. However, there seems to be no way to configure a mobile database to point to the dynamic snapshot. This is easy to configure in a Sql 2000 subscription - the options are right there are on the properties page. Yet, it seems like the mobile database only points to the required unfiltered snapshot through the IIS proxy.
Is there any way to force the mobile database to use the dynamic snapshot instead?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi
There's *strange* behaviour with snapshot size during subscription initialization.
So...
The initial snapshot has size about 9Mb at the publisher.
After subscription creation, I notice that the subscriber downloads about 21 MB.
It seems to me, that the snapshot is unpacked on the IIS, next, part of the files are packed again and just after it the changed snaphot is sent to the subscriber.
Why?
How it can be solved?
It brings some extent nuisance...
Thanks

Hi
I've big problems with my SQL Server 2005 Std. merge replication/snapshot share
I want to create a mobile application based on a ms sql 2005 mobile database running on a pocketpc 2003se.
for this task i installed iis, sql server 2005 std. and the sql server mobile tools.
i created a dedicated user for making snapshots in the new created and functionable publication, but when i start the web sync wizard, i alwas get the failurmessages
snapshot share "......" cannot be accessed, please specify a new share
the access permissions based on the share an based on the ntfs area are set right.
the user, i chose for the anonymus access (the same, as for creating snapshots), has enough rights on the folder. also when creating a new share, with different share name, and using another user for anonymus access (standard iusr_machine_name) i get the same message
do you have any suggestions for my problem??
please i need help as soon as possible
best regards

Replication is failing while applying the snapshot as the stored procs are out of sync ( the objects referenced in the stored procedures are no more exists in the database) . Is there any easy way to identify the out of sync procedures so that I can exclude these stored procedures from the articles list. I am having around 1000 procs and is not possible to test them by executing.
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
Well..
There's operable web sync with parameterized filter.
But sometimes the strange errors appear.
Below the list of the errors I got from ComErrorCollection property of MergeSynchronizationAgent instance:
ERROR: -2147199433
SOURCE: Merge Replication Provider(Web Sync Server)
TEXT: The Merge Agent was unable to start the SQL Server Agent job to generate the partitioned snapshot for this subscription. Verify that the SQL Server Agent service is running at the Distributor.
ERROR: 22022
SOURCE: HOST3MAIN
TEXT: SQLServerAgent Error: Request to run job dyn_HOST3MAIN-Customers-Main-2__20061014_14 (from User distributor_admin) refused because the job is already running from a request by User distributor_admin
ERROR: 20633
SOURCE: HOST3MAIN
TEXT: Failed to start the dynamic snapshot job. Verify that the SQLServerAgent service is running on the distributor.
ERROR: 20628
SOURCE: HOST3MAIN

I'm sure that SQL Server Agent is running...
What is the reason and how it can be solved?
Thanks

Hi,
I want to generate a new snapshot using stored procedures. I want to wait for the snapshot files to be created and then execute a stored procedure. What's the best way to determine that the snapshot has completed successfully? I thought of doing something like:
exec msdb.dbo.sp_help_job
@job_name = @job_name
@job_aspect = 'job',
@execution_status = 1
however I can't put the results of that proc into a temp table because I get this error:
Msg 8164, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_get_composite_job_info, Line 72
An INSERT EXEC statement cannot be nested.
Any ideas? I'd like a T-SQL solution.
Thanks,
Mark.

After reading alot of articles over the past few days, some things have become more clear, while others haven't.
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 .NET, SQL Server Express 2005 SP2, and SQL CE 2005 3.1.. The PC I'm developing on runs Vista, so I enabled IIS in the Control Panel.
I'm developing an application for the desktop PC, which connects to a local instance of SQL Express.. I also have developed basically a small data-capture app for the Pocket PC 2003 .. I have 3 very small tables I would like to keep synced, between the PC and the handheld, when the user docks the handheld into the docking cradle... is this possible with SQL Express? And if so, is IIS absolutely required to exchange data between the database on the PC, and the database on the handheld?
PS.
To explain the table interaction a bit further... say Tables A & B have information that is added/edited using the desktop application.. any time the handheld is cradled, I'd like the user to be able to update the tables A & B on the handheld with any data that has changed...
Meanwhile, the user captures data with the handheld, and these records are stored in table C.. when the handheld is cradled, any new records in the handheld in table C, I would like to have added to table C in the PC as well

How do I set up a database snapshot and backup the database for Windows Server Update Services 3.0, that uses the "desktop" version of SQL server on the same server running Widows Server 2003? There does not seem to be a "Management Plans" sub-folder under the "management" folder in the Management Studio Express console- so that's probably my first request- how do I establish a "Management Plans" subfolder, then how do I (step-by-step) set up a backup of the SUSDB?

I am having trouble setting up my Pull Subscription and I am new to replication.
I have several servers hosting a databased website that will be the same, except for user input and traffic. Quite simply, I need to copy most tables, SPs and data from network to network. I can't use FTP/Web synch ... as I mentioned the networks do not touch eachother or the internet.
On server Web1, it was easy to create a Publication called Pub via the wizard for my database: TheDB. Then on Web1, again, I added a Subscription to the Publication, indicating my second server, Web2, and the same database name: TheDB (I have already backed up and restored TheDB to all my servers). Here's one of the sp's I ran on Web1:
use [TheDB]
exec sp_addsubscription @publication = N'Pub', @subscriber = N'Web2'', @destination_db = N'TheDB', @sync_type = N'Automatic', @subscription_type = N'pull', @update_mode = N'read only'
GO
This is where I feel stuck. Using the wizard on Web2 doesn't allow me to see Web1. So I tried the following on Web2:
use [TheDB]
exec sp_addpullsubscription @publisher = N'Web1', @publication = N'Pub', @publisher_db = N'TheDB', @independent_agent = N'True', @subscription_type = N'pull', @description = N'', @update_mode = N'read only', @immediate_sync = 1
exec sp_addpullsubscription_agent @publisher = N'Web1', @publisher_db = N'TheDB', @publication = N'Pub', @distributor = N'Web1', @distributor_security_mode = 1, @distributor_login = N'', @distributor_password = null, @enabled_for_syncmgr = N'False', @frequency_type = 1, @frequency_interval = 0, @frequency_relative_interval = 0, @frequency_recurrence_factor = 0, @frequency_subday = 0, @frequency_subday_interval = 0, @active_start_time_of_day = 0, @active_end_time_of_day = 0, @active_start_date = 0, @active_end_date = 19950101, @alt_snapshot_folder = N'', @working_directory = N'', @use_ftp = N'True', @job_login = null, @job_password = null, @publication_type = 0
GO
I copied the snapshot folder, ie. 20070709134423, onto CD and moved it into Web2's default replication folder, but I always receive: cannot connect to Distibutor. I've tried using an Alias, as well, but don't understand exactly how I should point that either. I checked the publication's PAL and my Web2 user has rights and is an owner of the Web2 TheDB database.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi
I seem to have a strange problem when applying a snapshot when the tables in the publication have been updated while the snapshot was being generated.
Say for example there is a table called RMAReplacedItem in the publication. When the snapshot starts being applied to the subscriber, a stored procedure called sp_MSins_RMAReplacedItem_msrepl_css gets created that handles an insert if the row already exists (ie it updates the row rather than inserting it). However, after all the data has been loaded into the tables, instead of calling this procedure, it tries to call one called sp_MSins_RMAReplacedIte_msrepl_cssm - it takes the last letter of the table name and adds it to the end of the procedure name.
The worst part is that this causes the application of the snapshot to fail, but it doesnt report what the error is, and instead it just tries applying the snapshot again. The only way i have managed to find which call is failing is to run profiler against the subscriber while the snapshot is being applied and see what errors.
I have run sp_broswereplcmds and the data in there is what is applied to the subscriber - ie the wrong procedure name.
All the servers involved are running sql 2005 service pack 2. The publisher and subscriber were both upgraded from sql 2000, but the distribution server is a fresh install of sql 2005.

Good Morning All,
I had SQL Server Express installed for a few months now just for testing and learning without any problems. Yesterday, I found this learning video and decided to install “SQL Server Reporting Services" as shown in this lesson 10 video. http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/learning/default.aspx
When I was trying to install Reporting Services along with, something called Web Components and Backward compatibility were not being installed. So I decided to go to my control panel and uninstall everything for SQL server 2005 and then reinstall it.
This worked and Reporting Services Configuration was installed, but I cannot find the "Management Studio Express" feature in the ALL Programs area.
Whenever I try to reinstall it again the install does not go through and I get a message saying. quote: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup
None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed since no effective change is being made to the machine. To continue, click Back and then select features to install. To exit SQL Server Setup, click Cancel.

Hi everybody, I created several stored procedure in a local sql server 2005 express database, now when I call/execute them in the asp.net 2.0 web page, it returns an error message of "Cannot find the stored procedure '<proc_name>'", this is funny, when I execute the commandin a sql query window "exec sp_GetAllArticles", it also returns cannot find stored procedure, but when I execute the "Use <DBName>" and thenexecute the statement, it works. The sql connection used in codes is ok. So, what I have missed to set or where I made mistake?Code:Inside web.config, <add name="Connectstring" connectionString="Data Source=DENSIASQLExpress;Initial Catalog=DbName;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> inside Load event, DAL.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Connectstring"].ConnectionString; private void DisplayLatestResources() { DAL.CreateCommand("sp_GetLatestFiveTrainingResources"); DAL.ExecuteReader(); SqlDataReader dr = DAL.DataReader; ..... } Try supplying with user id and password, same result...also try using aspnet_regsql.exe, same result also... Thanks in advanced. den2005

We are needing to script to find out if our servers have a full version of SQL Server installed or if it is just SQL Express that is used by one of our backup software vendors. How can we do this? Currently, we are having to go into each server and look at the SQL console. Anything that someone can suggest would be greatly appreciated as we have hundreds of servers to go through.
Thanks much in advance.

I am trying to look up records by the first letter of the last name in SQL Express ADO recordsets.
"Select * from people where people.lastname like 'a%'"
works correctly. (a*) works also.
ptRs.movefirst
PtRs.Find "lastname LIKE 'a%'", 0, adSearchForward
Does not work, does not find anything, but if I use 'a %' ('a<space>%') it finds the first last name starting with a.
Why does a% not work. Can you not use wild characters in Find Statements in SQL Express?

I know there are already several bug submissions on this error, and I am sure the cryptoAPI team is working to resolve this issue.. However... Is it possible that the CAPICOM update (KB931906) could have contributed to this issue? In my instance, I installed SQLServer 2005 Express w/ Adv Tools SP2 after a freash XP install. I checked it out, and everything worked fine. I updated windows (online) and now it gives this error. In fact, I cannot even run the un-install because the setup utility also hits the following error (as taken from the log file):

I have:
A server computer running SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
A industrial computer running SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
And now also a Psion WorkAboutPro with CE 5 that should run SQL Server Compact Edition.
The industrial computer syncs its data with the server, basically saying "this has happened".
Now I want the Psion to sync with the industrial computer, but this sync must two-way.
I have tried to find a guide or something that can tell me "do this to sync" but the information i have found is sketchy at best.
If someone could point me in the right direction of a guide or something else it would be much appreciated.

I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.
"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".
I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.
I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.
Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.
I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.
I would appreciate being pointed at the right downloads for what seems to be a simple install.

I have two db instances on different SQL Servers. One is my test db and the other the prod. db. Each has two tables that hold lookUp values for the entire application. I would like to keep these tables in sync. in both dbs. The prod. db would be the master. I was trying to design a trigger to insert, update, or delete the appropriate records in the test db as they were added or deleted from the prod db.
I'm getting too many prefixes errors on the script when trying to reference the table on the test db using four part naming convention.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Do I need to set up a linked server to accomplish this functionality? If so, how do I setup security for a linked server?
Thanks in advance.

I have a SQL 7 backup file that I restored onto a new server. All the objects within the database are not owned by dbo, instead they are owned by a db user. When I tried to login to the db it said that it wasn't a valid user. So I added the login to the system. Now when I login it says it is not a valid db user. I have attempted to sync the id's but don't know how. In 6.5 I could run an ad-hoc query to match the SUID's for the system and the database. In 7.0 I can not because the suid for the db is computed. Any ideas on how to sync the user ID's so that I can login to the server using the target db as my default and can query the table with prefacing the owner(I can get in if I give my login SA privelages but then I have to preface all the objects with the owners name)?
Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

hi,
we currently have a web server/db on-site and a similar backup machine across the country. we're using a pretty bad backup strategy. we zip up a backup file, thats done on the main server every night, then ftp over to the back up server then run a restore.
lately ive been having problems with the main server. i would like to have the machines sync'd up as close as possible.
ive searched the threads and noticed replication and log shipping to be the most practical, but im assuming most of the machines are on the same domain.
what would be my best bet for machines connected over the internet, no vpn?
also the db on the main machine get queried/inserts all day from 7am - 6:30pm
thoughts?
thx

I need to syncronize two separate databases. One is SQL Server the other is MySql. I don't have a lot of experience with MSSQL and need a little advice on how best (in terms of speed especially) to gather records that have been added since the last sync and any that have been modified. The table in question has datetime fields for both, the time each record was created (CreatedTime) and the time that the record was last modified (ModifiedTime). Sync will happen daily.
I have worked out a few ways I might do this with DATEADD or DATEDIFF, but my question is, what is the most effecient way? Currently I'm just looking for a way to get inserted and updated records from SQL Server to MySQL. I may have to do a two way sync of some sort later.

For sync with 2 there's no problem. I need to make it with three and then at the end of the year with four.
Can anyone help me?
