I'm working with SQL Server 2000 installed in Windows 2000. When i tried to add the 'servername' as a linked server , i got the following message:
" Error: 15038. The Server 'servername' already exists."
When i execute "sp_linkedservers" , i could see the name "servername" in the list. But before doing this i had Restored the "MSDB" database on this server. Should i use "sp_droplinkedservers" and add them again.
I have created linked server object between a sql 2000 and sql 2005 database. i have the latest mdacs installed and all the services enabled on both sides. But when i try and run a sql statement on the sql 2000 side i get this error: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (PreLoginHandshake()).]General network error. Check your network documentation. If i try and run a swl statment on the sql server 2005 side the procedure works. Has anyone experienced the same problem?Any advice?
We have two sql servers using Windows authentication. One is sql 2000 the other sql 2005. When logged in as "sa", I can link these servers and run a SELECT distributed query without any problem.
But when one of our developers runs the same query (he is "dbo" of each database on each of the servers) he gets the error:
"OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server <Servername> returned message "Communication Link Failure" ... Login failed for user '(null'). reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection"
Despite that, I, as "sa" equivalent, have no problem so it appears to be a permisisons issue. Any ideas what is going on here?

I've set up a Linked server connection to a Windows 2003 server running MySql using SSL.
I can run SQL and T-SQL from the query window using the Server management studio on the server, and everything is good.
As soon as I apply a trigger to a table on our local server running the same script, I get a "linked server unable to begin a distributed transaction" error.
I've google'ed my brains out on this error and tried both Mysql ODBC drivers 3.51 and 5.1 and keep getting the same error.
Does anyone know where I can get some good examples of how to set up a linked server to an Oracle data source in SQL 2000? I can't seem to get a link set up to my Oracle database. In particular I am wondering how the communication works between OLEDB to the Oracle Instance and how to trouble shoot issues (for example, would is the Oracle Listener what OLEDB is talking to?) Thanks!!
I have migrated databases and logins from SQL server 2008 R2->SQL Server 2014. Now I also want to migrate/copy the "linked servers". Do you have a step-by-step for this, so that i will copy everything that is necessary regarding logins etc ?
Below is the syntax I am using for creating Linked server from SQL Server i.e windows 2008 R2 standard to Postresql database running on Linux 32 bit Debian (Linux turtle 3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.46-1+deb7u1 i686 GNU/Linux) and the version of Postresql is 8.3
/****** Object: LinkedServer [HGCDEV] Script Date: 09/15/2015 17:03:37 ******/ EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'HGCDEV', @srvproduct=N'', @provider=N'MSDASQL', @datasrc=N'172.16.20.159',@provstr=N'UID=web;PWD=dev123' /* For security reasons the linked server remote logins password is changed with ######## */ EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'HGCDEV',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=NULL,@rmtuser='web',@rmtpassword='dev123'
This the error I am getting " Cannot initializee the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "HGCDEV".
How to setup the linked server........... Below are the drivers installed on the SQL server
Can someone please shed some light on what seems to me to be a common requirement.
If I create an alias or linked server to Server1 - say Alias1 - on Server1 and then use that name in a query on Server1, a remote/distributed query is always used (even though we are running on the local server and that overhead is completely unnecessary).
Is SQL Server really not capable of deciding that select * from Alias1.db1.dbo.table1 and select * from Server1.db1.dbo.table1 should be optimized and executed exactly the same when Alias1 is Server1, but that it is a distributed query ONLY when Alias1 is really referring to a remote server? I realize that the four part name is not necessary when I am referring to objects on the current server, but I am trying to write code that is server instance independent.
It just seems that if that is not possible, then the only way to create system independent stored procs that can run in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers is to create all sorts of scripts to regenerate all the procs whenever you move a database between servers?
If SQL Server is even close to the enterprise big iron server that MS now claims it is, it surely needs to support running in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers?!
I'm really looking for someone to tell me I'm missing something simple, and of course you can do this - but complex workarounds are invited too :-) This is not something I am investigating as an academic exercise, I am already doing this, but I have to figure out how to do it better because with all these unnecessary distributed queries, performance is horrible.
I have a schedule job that I would like to run on a MSDE database. Thestored proc executes just fine if I run it manually. But trying toschedule it through the Enterprise Manager (or Management Studio)generates an error saying the the "Remote Access not allowed forWindows NT user activated by SETUSER.Essentially I have tables in the MSDE which are being updated based ontables from a LINKED SQL Server.I can not appear to get this job to execute unattended. Please advise,Rob(rkershberg@gmail.com)
I have installed SQL 2005 (X64) on 64-bit Windows 2003 server (AMD). One of my databases need to connect several Oracle databases on 32 bit servers.
I managed to install Oracle 32 bit Client (was unsuccessful with 64 bit installation) and could set up the odbc (32). But I coul'nt find Oracle under linked servers!
I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.
1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server. 2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers. 3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.
Two of the errors I am encountering are: ------------------------------ TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054) ------------------------------ And ------------------------------ The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed. Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB". OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)
If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.
Thanks!

We are experiencing a problem with Sql Server 2000 linking to anAccess 97 file. We have two machines that link to this .mdb file, andwe recently upgraded one to newer hardware, SP3a, MDAC 2.8, etc. Thelink on this upgraded machine no longer works, giving this message:Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot open a database created witha previous version of your application.]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ].The link on the older machine still works. We decided to tryconverting a copy of the file to Access 2000 to see if the newerpatches/drivers/whatever no longer supported 97. We set up a link onboth machines to this file, and they both work. However, on theupgraded machine, the following error is receievedServer: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.[OLE/DB provider returned message: System resource exceeded.]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'ICommandText::Execute returned 0x80004005: ].when making 1-3 connections to the the linked server, while the oldermachine supports at least 7 simultaneous queries connecting to thelinked server and still hasn't produced that error.Does anyone have any idea if there is a known issue with linking toAccess 97/2000 files under MDAC 2.8, Jet 4.0, etc? Any light anyonecan shine on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
We shall be taking a bunch of 7.0 instances and moving/upgrading to a SQL 2000 cluster server. I was thinking of creating new named instances on the 2000 cluster and upgrading each 7.0 server to it's respective named instance. Also thought of using the 2000 copy database wizard; I was told this didn't always work. Anyone hear of problems with this? Thanks
I was wondering whether it is possible to query linked servers in SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 if those servers linked to are SQL Server 2000 machines?
I have added some linked servers to express and queried them, however the login timeout is expiring. I thought it might be because of an incompatability.
can anybody tell me about Linked Servers and their uses and how to add a linked server to my Sql Server 2005. any help on this would be highly appreciated.
I have been trying to Link two sql servers on two different machines over the Internet without any luck. Can someone point me to information about doing this with good examples?
I currently have a main SQL Server which had a column on the majority of the tables. This column also had a check contraint on it. I dropped the column and the constraint and I now get the following message when trying to query the tables through a linked server 'OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' supplied inconsistent metadata. An extra column was supplied during execution that was not found at compile time.'.
Hi All, I have successfully linked a server and had SQL queries running OK for a few weeks, but today I get the following message....
"OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' supplied inconsistent metadata. An extra column was supplied during execution that was not found at compile time." (Server: Msg 7353, Level 16, State 1, Line 1)
I've dropped the link and recreated it but I still get the same error message. Can anyone help???
I have a DTS package that requires me to link 2 servers and query both in order to get my set of records that I want to Transform. My query runs fine in QA. I copy and paste it into the SQL Query window of the transformation. I click Preview and all that happens is a quick flicker of the DTS window. When I go to Transformations, there are no source columns.
Here is a copy of my code that I'm trying to use: ------------------------------------------------------- declare@start_dteas datetime, @end_dteas datetime
SELECTT70.* FROM CRMDEV02.MDCORE.DBO.T70_MD_UNIVERSE_RELATIONSHIP_M A NGT AS T70 JOIN #RUNS ONT70.RUN_ID = #RUNS.RUN_ID
DROP TABLE #RUNS ------------------------------------------------------ Is there an issue with Linked Servers and DTS? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Gurus, I am looking for literature to find out Pros and Cons of Using DTS Verses Linked Servers in SQL 7.0.
My requirement can be done by either DTS or Linked servers. But I would like to know more about resorce utilisation of these tecniques before making a decission.
When I create linked server using integrated security and <they will be impersonated> option I get this: Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 Login failed for user '' MS Technet says that SQL Server 7 doesn't allow double hops and to use mappings to standard security login to work around. @#%%~~@@#@#&^%@# Impersonating to version 6.5 works fine. Is there any way to link servers using ONLY integrated security? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
I have setup a linked Informix server in SQL7.0 and I am trying to create a simple View with the following SQL statement
SELECT doc_code FROM FOURSITE.foursite.informix.watdoc WHERE (order_no = [PV01963B ])
I am getting the following error:
--------------------------- SQL Server Enterprise Manager --------------------------- [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid use of schema and/or catalog for OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL'. A four-part name was supplied, but the provider does not expose the necessary interfaces to use a catalog and/or schema. --------------------------- OK Help ---------------------------
Hi. I'm working with SQL Server 7.0 and I've been reading about the linked server option. My question is, if it's possible to link a server with a SQLBase database 7.01.
I have download some drivers to my computer, the odbc driver for sqlbase and the sqlbase ole db driver as well, but when I try to add a new linked server in the enterprise, in the provider name option I can not see any provider name addressing to Centura or Sql base driver.
Has anybody an idea how to make this connection then? or the right way for doing it??
Thanks for any help can be offered. Regards, Elvia. :)
