Sql Server 2005 Express: Export/Import Content Of A Table
Apr 3, 2008
I want to export data in a table from one database to another database. And I would like it bo be clone of the source table, if it's possible. Is there any tools out there that can help me with this or do I have to write my own code?
Is it possible to query the database to get all columns and datatypes for å requested table? If possible, can you give me an example?
If I have to write a tool myself I guess I would do something like this: Export - Query the database for columns and datatype for the requested table. Dynamically generate a query to retrieve all rows from the table and save it to an xml file. Import - Turn off the Identity Increment, loop through the xml file and generate insert queries to insert a clone of each row, turn off the Identity Increment. Viola! If programming only could be that simple :-)

I've created a new database and restored the database from a backup. I'm wanting to import raw data from an excel spreadsheet into the tables of the new database.
When I right click on the database, and hover over tasks the import/ export data menu options are not in the menu. The menu items ends at 'Generate Scripts'.
I'm connected on a local instance to a registered server.
Can anyone advise?

Greetings.
Our company is planning to upgrade to ESRI's brand new ArcSDE Personal edition and SQL Server Express 2005 platform to do GIS work for our clients. We are not in a position at this time to migrate to the full ArcGIS Server and SQL Server 2005 platform. We currently use a Microsoft Access 2003 relational database, and have no intention to move to Access 2007.
ArcSDE Personal cannot connect to SQL Server 2005, but it is able to connect and work with SQL Server Express 2005.
In SQL Management Studio Express, we were unable to find any feature that would allow us to import and export data to/from SQL Server Express. This is rather unusual, as we need to test how SQL Server Express will handle import and export data. In Microsoft Access we simply right click and choose import or export in the database window. Easy as pie. We ran the upsize wizard in Microsoft Access to migrate our data. But after that, our GIS team was pretty much stuck.
My question is, how does one import/export data to/from SQL Server Express? Do we need to install a missing component? Is scripting required? Or should we wait until we are able to acquire the SQL Server 2005?

After some weeks evaluating tools and platforms for developing an application, I decided to move to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Everything was fine till last night, when after creating my tables, I needed to populate them. I tried to find the Import and Export Data Wizard that SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 used to have, but great was my surprise when I found - in this forum - a post that said that it's not available in the Express Edition.
I'll have to move back in time (what I hate) to remember the way BCP worked. Can somebody post some examples to not start from zero ? Does anybody know a third party visual tool that can import/export data from text files to a SQL Server DB via ODBC ?
What's the reason it was not included in the EE ?
THanks !

Hi,
I'm new to SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL. I've been using Access for year and have not moved on to asp.net for my website. I understand from 1and1.com that I will need to imort a backup of my SQL Server 2005 Express file to my on site database. I don't find any way to do that. Please advise as to how I get the express version to work on my site.
Thanks!

INSERT INTO [database].[dbo].[table] ([column1] ,[column2]) VALUES (2,2)
INSERT INTO [database].[dbo].[table] ([column1] ,[column2]) VALUES (3,34)
INSERT INTO [database].[dbo].[table] ([column1] ,[column2]) VALUES (4,234)

He wants the application run and updated all the data in to a database (called warehouse database). Every month, all records in warehouse database will be synchronized to another database which is identical with the warehouse database but it is run in his laptop at the office. Since networking is not an option, I have to create two identical database like this. Does any one know what is the good solution to this? Is there any synchronize feature in SQL Server 2005?Many thanks,

Hi,In SQL 2000 if I wanted to take a complete copy of another running sqldatabase all did was create a new database locally and right-click itand select import and point to another database and click copyeverything (stored procedures as well) and it did it for. I can't seemto find the same functionality in SQL 2005. You can copy tables andviews but not the whole database. Is there another way of doing this? Our SQL database is hosted externaly and they recommend using theimport/export feature to do it. Does anyone know I can copy everything(such stored procedures, data table relations...etc)TanksMA.

Have the 2005 Enterprise Evaluation version. Trying to import data from a flat file to DB table. Tried running wizard from designer studio and from creating a data flow in SBIDS
Either way I am able to setup and start excution and then bombs with a fatal error.
"SQL Server Import and Export Wizard has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Asks to Debug or close.. Tried installing on 2 other machines and having same issue. Tried several different data files and tables same issue.
Does anyone know if this is a bug? Am I missing something with permissions?
Thanks

Hi!
I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.
I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)
Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.
Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):
an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql
Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?
This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.
So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.
Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.
Thanks in advance.
Dan

I have two databases on two different servers (an old hosting solution and a new). I need to get all the data from one server to the other but I have no clue as how to do it with MS SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I can easily make the create table scripts that will allow me to create the tables on the new server but what about all the data. I wondered if there is some way to export and import data from one server to another?
With the old SQL Enterprise Manager I was able to import or export as I saw fit but I can't seem to find anything like this with the express manager.
Anyone has any advise as I would like to avoid coding somekind of export program myself,
Many kind regards

I am using SQL Server v8.0 Enterprise Manager and I have been trying to export a database and a table. But no matter how many times I try I keep getting error messages. It just wont let me make a backup of anything. Ideally I would like to make a backup of a table from within a database. Then restore it but use a different file name so I can have a sandbox with which to test something out. When using the Export wizard the destination server is local using Windows authentication.
Here is the error I typically see:
Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Error Description: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Context: Error during initialization of the provider.
I only have one book which is Beginning SQL Server 2005 for Developers by Apress. It's great for most things but not this. Can anyone help me figure out how to do an export so I can create a sandbox environment with which to play and test with?

Hi,
I just installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I would like to import tables from
another DB, and I read in the help files that I just need to (1) right-click on
a non-system database in Management Studio Express, and (2) select Import/Export
under the Tasks menu.
I tried this, but my Tasks menu only contains these options: Detach, Shrink,
Backup, Restore, Generate Scripts.
I googled for "sql server 2005 "no import" tasks", and it appears that a
couple of people have had this problem -- the only solution I read was to
install the "Workstation Components," but I already have, and still no luck.
Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express on a laptop for development purposes and would like to import some Access databases that I was using coupled to programs written in VB 6.
If using SQL Server 2000 I could use the management studio to automate the import but I can not find any way to do this in Management Studio Express. Would have thought that this would be the typical migration route - Access to Server Express
Is there some way to automate this procedure?
Thanks
