Sql Server 2008

Jan 2, 2008

I pray I am in the right forum.

I went to MSDN Products Keys and Downloads and found that they offer Sql Server 2008 as a free download for MSDN Pro subscribers. At least this is my inpression as to what is going on. I think it comes on 4 or 5 DVDs.

I am using Sql Server Express Edition with Advanced Features. I want to be honest and say that I most likely do not use these "advanced features" because of the nature of my work. I do not have this customer/product canonical setup. I store numerical data as well as stocks info. It is all for myself. I understand that the "advanced features" include reporting services but so far I have never used them.

This is my dilemma. I want to stay abreast with the progress and use the most current software. If I download the full SqlServer it will kill my machine with the enormous surface area. I do not need even systems databases, let alone Nowthwind. I create my onw DBs.

Do they have an equivalent of Sql Server Express for 2008?

What would you advice me to do?

Thanks.

Can I Run SQL Server 2008 - Reporting Services CTP Until Microsoft Sells SQL 2008

Mar 31, 2008

There are a few features in the new SQL Server - Reporting Services that I really need in production. I have tested everything and it works great. I am running the CTP version since Microsoft is saying they aren't releasing the release version until 3rd quarter 2008.

Since Microsoft won't sell SQL 2008 until 3rd quarter, can I run the CTP in production until the release and then purchase SQL 2008?

Seeking Advice: SQL Server On Win 2008 Virtual Server Or Just Win 2008?

Apr 23, 2008

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.

Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

Thanks,

A Brown

Problem With Windows Server 2008 And SQL 2008 Express

Feb 25, 2008

Hello!
Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks for help,
Jan

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008

Mar 7, 2008

Hi all,

New to this so please be patient and please help.

I have developed an SQL 2005 Express command line option install for our company which has been working seamlessly for the last 18 months.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx

I downloaded the €śMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express CTP, February 2008€? from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=749BD760-F404-4D45-9AC0-D7F1B3ED1053&displaylang=en

I simply replaced the 2005 file €śSQLEXPR.EXE€? with the 2008 file €ś€?, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail. I than read the 2008 books online and noted the change in command line options.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=19DB0B42-A5B2-456F-9C5C-F295CDD58D7A&displaylang=en

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259(SQL.100).aspx

I then changed the command line to suit the Microsoft 2008 books online, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail once more.

Interestingly I tested the install from the default GUI and at the point of adding the €śsa€? login credentials it fails to allow the installation to proceed. Strangely by selecting the windows authentication credentials, €śnext€? than €śback€? it now allows me to add the €śsa€? login credentials and continues to install correctly as required.

I hope I have explained this clearly enough.

1. Is this a bug in the €śMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008€? installation?
2. If so is this causing the command line install options to fail?
3. How do I obtain a version of €śMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express€? that will work installing from the command line?

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2008 :: SSIS Package Fails Silently On Server But Works If Run Manually

Jul 7, 2015

I have two calls to stored procedures that in an SSIS package fails silently. They are simply not executed in production but works fine in test, nothing happens and the sql server agent reports that everything has gone just fine.

In test they have 1 server with db A and B. No issue here.

In prod they have 2 servers with db A and B. On server 1 sql server agent executes a job that includes an SSIS package that on server 2 runs a couple of sp's. That user is db owner on server 2 db B and yet nothing happens. The sp's are not executed.

If I in prod run the job manually then it works, but not when run with the sql server agent account that as said is even db owner.

Visual Studio 2008;SQL Server 2005;SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Question

Aug 26, 2007

I have a question about a problem that I cannot seem to tackle. I have installed the following programs on Windows Vista:

- SQL Server 2005
- Visual Studio 2008
- SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5
- SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Server Tools

I want to do the following:

1. I want to create a SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 database in the SQL Server Management Studio
2. I want my SQL Express server in SQL Server 2005 to be a distributor and publisher

About 1. In SQL Server Management Studio I cannot choose SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 .
ABout 2. I tried to setup my server to be a distrubutor by running a stored procedure with the following name: sp_adddistributor. I get the following error: This edition of SQL Server cannot act as a Publisher or Distributor for replication.

Does anyone have a solution to both problems.

How Can I Get The 'entire' Database, Structure And Data, From SQL Server 2008 To SQL Server 2005?

Jun 20, 2008

1) I can't get the 'copy database' function to work from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2005. I connect ok. Everything goes to the last step and then it fails.2) I cant get a SQL server 2008 backup to restore on SQL SEerver 2005 either.
The only way I know that works is to script the creation of all tables then export and import. This does work.
How can I get the 'entire' database, structure and data, from 2008 to 2005?

SQL Server 2008 :: Linked Server Tests Fine But Query Does Not Work

Apr 16, 2015

Using a 32-Bit SQL Server 2008 Express on my LOCAL PC. I downloaded the Advantage 8.1 OLE DB Provider and created a linked server to a REMOTE Advantage 8.1 database server. There is no data dictionary on the Advantage server.

Here is my linked server:

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx', @srvproduct=N'Advantage', @provider=N'Advantage OLE DB Provider', @datasrc=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xxeccET', @provstr=N'servertype=ads_local_server;tabletype=ads_cdx;'--tabletype=’ADS_ADT’ (this test works too)
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=Null,@rmtuser='adssys',@rmtpassword=Null

Testing the link succeeds with above. Using “ads_REMOTE_server” instead of “ads_local_server” and the test fails. Here is my problem, using the following queries will not work. Perhaps it’s a permissions issue? When I specify my local credentials for the remote server in the linked server it still does not work.

SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY([1xx.1xx.xx.1xx], 'SELECT * FROM ActType')

OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx" returned message "Error 7200: AQE Error: State = HY000; NativeError = 5004; [Extended Systems][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 5004: Either ACE could not find the specified file, or you do not have sufficient rights to access the file. Table name: ActType SELECT * FROM ActType".
Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 2

An error occurred while preparing the query "SELECT * FROM ActType" for execution against OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx".

SQL Server 2008 :: View Creation Using XML Column On Linked / Distributed Server?

Sep 4, 2015

A recent SharePoint upgrade has rendered several views obsolete. I am redefining them so that our upper level executive reports show valid data.(yes, I know that doing anything to sharepoint could cause MS to deny support, having said that, this is something I've inherited and need to fix, pronto) The old view was created like so:

USE [AHMC]
GO
/****** Object: View [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] Script Date: 09/04/2015 09:28:03 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE VIEW [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] AS
SELECT

[code]....

As I said, this view is used in a report showing surgical minutes.SharePoint is now on a new server, which is linked differently (distributed?) I've used OPENQUERY to get my 'new' query to work;

SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY ([PORTALWEBDB], 'SELECT
--AllLists
AL.tp_ID AS ALtpID
,AL.tp_WebID as altpwebid
,AL.tp_Title AS ALTitle

[code]....

My data (ie surgical minutes, etc) seems to be in the XML column, AUD.tp_ColumnSet . So I need to parse it out and convert it to INT to maintain consistency with the previous view. How do I do this within the context of the view definition? Here is a representation of the new and old view data copied to excel :

<datetime1>2014-08-14T04:00:00</datetime1><float1>2.000000000000000e+000</float1><float2>4.190000000000000e+002</float2><float3>1.600000000000000e+001</float3><float4>8.110000000000000e+002</float4><sql_variant1 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:sqltypes="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/sqltypes"

[Code] ....

can't format it to make it look decent. InHouseCases =2, InHouseMinutes=419, OutPatientCases =16, OutPatientMinutes=1230. This corresponds to the new data I can see in the XML column; 2.000000000000000e+000 is indeed 2 and 4.190000000000000e_002 is indeed 419.

Problems Connecting To SQL Server 2005 SP2 On Windows Server 2008 (both 64bit)

Hi All,
After I installed sql server 2005 64bit standard edition on Windows Server Enterprise 2008 64bit, I cannot connect to the sql instance using the sql management studio on the same machine!
I verified that:

service is running,

in surface area configuration: remote connections to local and remote are enabled, for TCP/IP and named pipes.

ran the command netstat -avn| findstr 49279 to make sure that the server is listening.

firewall is off, but this does not matter since I'm connecting locally to local instance

I'm using domain controller account to login to sql server / also tried the sa account.
what else can be wrong?

thanks.

SQL Server 2008 :: Capture Database / Server Name In A Derived Column To Identify Source Of Data?

Feb 1, 2012

I am task with identifying the source database name, id, and server name for each staging table that I create. I need to add this to a derived column on all staging tables created from merging same tables on different servers together.

When doing a Merge Join, there is no way to identify the source of data so I would like to see if data came from one database more than the other servers or if their are duplicates across servers.

The thing that bugs me about SSIS Data Flow task is there is no way to do an easy Execute SQL Task after I select my ADO.NET Source to get this information because my connection string is dynamic and there is no way of know which data source is being picked up at runtime.

For Example I have Products table on Server 1 and 2:

Server 2 has more Products and would like to join the two together to create a staging table.

I want see the following:

Product ID, Product Name, Qty, Src_DB_ID, Src_DB_Name, Src_Server_Name
1 IPAD 1000 2, MyDB1, Server1
100 ASUS Pad 40 1, YourDB, Server2

get database name and server name in DATA FLOW only (without using a for each in Control Flow)

Using these DMVs I can get a lot of relevant information:

sys.dm_exec_sessions
Program Name (eg. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio),
Client Interface Name (eg. .Net SqlClient Data Provider)
sys.dm_exec_connections
Net Transport (eg. TCP),
Client Net Address and TCP Port

but not how the server's IP address was resolved. Is the connection string ever sent by the client to the server, or just used for DNS lookup?

I just installed Windows Server 2008. The installation also included Web Server.

When I tried to install SQL Server, I got the following warning:

IIS Feature Requirement (Warning)

Messag

IIS Feature Requirement

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.

Can somebody advise me on how I can resolve this warning? Would running SP2 take care of this?

Can't Install SQL Server 2005 On Windows 2008 Server Core

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64-bit on a 64-bit instance of Windows 2008 running as Server Core. I read about an issue in KB article 920201, but I don't even get that far. The setup first tries to install .NET Framework 2.0, which fails with error message:
Error 70243 installing .NET Framework 2.0

I tried installing .NET Framework separately, which indicates that I need to install Internet Explorer 5.01. I'm reluctant to try that, so I'd like to know if the people that actually got to the issue in KB920201 installed IE first (is that even possible?).

SQL Server 2008 :: Extracting Data From Linked Server

Dec 17, 2010

I am using MS SQL 2008, and I am trying to extract data from a MySQL database. I am having trouble extracting the data I need.

In SQL Server management studio, I can see the linked server...I can browse the different databases on the server. I can see user and system tables in all of the databases.

When I try and query a linked table (select * from server.db.table) I get Invalid object name 'servername.databasename.tablename'.

When I try script the table.. right_click on the linked table, Script table as, Select to, New Query Editor window, I get an error '[servername].[databasename]..[tablename] contains no columns that can be selected or the current user does not have permissions on that object.'

This leads me to believe that it is a permissions problem, but if I have access to the MySQL database using MySQL and the same login/password) and can retrieve the data there, then I think my login credentials should be enough using MS SQL. I guess I think its odd that I could have enough credentials to get in and see table names, but not do a select against it.

SQL Server 2008 :: No-lock Across Linked Server With Join?

Mar 9, 2015

I have two servers (lets call them sA and sB) connected from sA -> sB via a linked server (i.e. sA pulls data across from sB).

I'm building a temp table full of stock symbols on sA, and then I need to update some values on sA using content on sB. The tables on sB are very large (about 500m rows) so I don't want to pull even close to everything across the linked server. Ordinarily I'd do this by joining to the linked server table, but the target table needs to have nolock on it due to their high use.

update t
set someValue = s.SomeValue
from #myTab t
inner join lnk_sB.xref.dbo.Symbols s with (nolock)
on t.id = s.id

From reading around I gather that nolock doesn't work across linked servers. It was noted in another SSC article that you could use nolock by using an OPENQUERY, but then I can't join to my local temp table, and I end up pulling all .5B rows across the linked server.

Is there some way I can limit the content on sB by my temp table on sA but still use nolock?
