Sql Server Database Comparison Tool
Oct 6, 2005
Hi, I'm looking for a tool to compare 2 sql server database and makes a script of the differences (like an added table or record). We want to use it to generate a script which we can send to our customers to update their database if a change has been made. Example: We send our customers database A. After half a a year they request some changes to be made to the application that affects the database, say a table has to be added. We want the tool to automatically detect the difference between database A when it was first released and after the changes has been made and generate a script. Anyone suggestions? T.I.A., ratjetoes.

Hello,
I need a tool that will let me model a SQL Server 2005 database and then generate the tables, constraints, etc. from the model. I've never used a modeling tool so my knowledge is quite limited. I don't need to model or reverse engineer an application - my sole concern is on the SQL Server database side. I'm not concerned if the tool integrates with Visual Studio. And, of course, price is one consideration.
Are there any good tools that I should look at?
Thanks,
BCB

I tried to run aspnet_regsql.exe to edit the config(C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727>aspnet_regsql.exe), however, it still shows this error message.
I am using web developer 2008 and SQL Server 2005.
Please advice me how to tackle this problem.

I have a sharepoint on a windows internal database server (some version of sql express 2005). When I run the app, it says that I need SQL server reporting services 2005. I dont think that this component is bundled with "windows internal database server". Is there anyway I can download this component or otherwise make this work?
Seems a bit silly that they would make a tool requiring a component that doesnt need to be installed for sharepoint to run.

I had an application go down yesterday...it was giving a Type Mismatch error and the support team couldn't figure it out.
My suspicion is that a field in the database got populated with a character the vb app didn't like when it renders the information.
I'd like to prove that theory...but the database is large (4gb) and I'm not sure how to do a database comparison to see where the records differ.
Anybody have a script to get me started OR some experience to share?
Thanks,

Hello all. I am using Sql Compact Edition for a small standalone application, I create and build the initial database schema on initial startup. What I am looking for is a way to upgrade the software and on initial startup of the new version, I would like it to compare the existing database with a new schema and then update the database based on the difference. This way I can have a version that will update the database without me having to know what version it is to begin with. Is there a way to do this or am I asking too much?
Thank you,
Jim

As many of you know I've been hunting down a SQL CE alternative / embedded DB that is easily portable among handhelds.
It turns out, that without paying for some other DB, there really aren't any good ones... Unless you go GPL, and the interpretation of GPL that most are using is that your code too is GPL even though you may only Dynamically Link to their app. I think this is likely wrong, but none the less I'm back here yet again.
What I'm looking for this time is a definition of how SQL Server CE is implemented, how it differs from a full blown DB, etc, so I can more thourally explain "why SQL CE" is an embedded DB, and how it isn't the full blown SQL Server that has a bad reputation with some.
My guess is:
SQL Server CE is implemented via DLL. There aren't sockets etc to allow you to connect, and it operates more like an advanced hash on the file system.
Please correct me if i'm wrong, or... send me a link where I can further research. Also, if you have another embedded DB as a suggestion, that's free of course, please point it my way.
Thanks!

Hi...
Does anybody know of an open source script I can download that will enable me to manage an SQL database? I basically need to access and modify the database from any machine that may not have SQL Enterprise Manager Installed. I was thinking of writing my own script to do this but I assumed that there is probably already one out there.

Hi Guys,
I am not sure this is the right section to post this in, but ModelRight (www.modelright.com) is releasing a new version of its database design tool that supports SQS 2005/2008. I think the tool provides many advantages over the existing tools (deep SQS support, excellent UI, easy to use, etc).
Currently ModelRight is looking for SQS beta testers. If you want to participate just please go to the website and download the latest version.
Thanks.

When I use the sql 2005 "Database Diagrams" tool for the first time I always get the message: "The Database does not have one or more of the support objects required to use database diagramming. Do you wish to create them?"
1. Does anyone know what the " support objects" referred to are?
2. Why SQL doesn't automatically create these support objects for me? (e.g. do they require a lot of hard disk space so they shouldn't routinely be created?)
3. Is there any way to make Sql automatically create them?
If you can address any of these points I'd appreciate it.
TIA,

What tool should I use to view SQL Server Compact Edition database?
I have VS2008 Professional, but I didn't find any tool in the installation. So I tried to install the SQL Server Developer Edition, which is included in the VS2008 package, but the installation has quit saying the that there is nothing to upgrade (there is probably newer version of SQL installed by VS2008 itself).
I also tried to download and install SQL Server Managment Studio Express. The installation went well, but then I wasn't able to select any SSCE database (there was only SQL Server Express or something like that selectable).
Is there anything else I should do?

Hi all,
I have the following select that is designed to compare values on parallel servers.SELECT TA1.EPS, TA1.Sales, TA1.Income, TA1.EarningsReportDate,TA2.EPS, TA2.Sales, TA2.Income, TA2.EarningsReportDate
FROM TradeAnalysis.dbo.SalesIncome_Quarterly AS TA1
FULL OUTER JOIN L_TA_MIRROR.TradeAnalysis.dbo.SalesIncome_Quarterl y AS TA2
ON ((TA1.OSID = TA2.OSID) AND (TA1.QtrYear = TA2.QtrYear) AND (TA1.QuarterNo = TA2.QuarterNo))
WHERE(BINARY_CHECKSUM(TA1.EPS, TA1.Sales, TA1.Income, TA1.EarningsReportDate) <>
BINARY_CHECKSUM(TA2.EPS, TA2.Sales, TA2.Income, TA2.EarningsReportDate))Disregard the full outer join, it is necessary in the full select, I have just pared it down to show here and for testing. A standard join will also have the same result.
The trouble is that the comparison (the BINARY_CHECKSUM) is failing on the EarningsReportDate column, which is defined on BOTH servers in DUPLICATE databases as a smalldatetime.
The data is actually the same in both rows of each table (as is all the other data being compared). What I am seeing is that the select returns milliseconds on the LINKED server (the L_TA_MIRROR reference), but not on the local database?
for example,
Local server data returned in above select is 2000-01-28 00:00:00
Linked server data returned in above select is 2000-01-28 00:00:00.000
Wassup with THAT? If I remove the date from the select/comparison, it says everything matches, so I am pretty sure this is the culprit that is causing the BINARY_CHECKSUM comparison to fail.
Is there some setting that I need to put on the Linked Server reference that says "treat this as the smalldatetime data type it IS, dammit!"????
I can get by the issue if I replace the date reference in the linked server part of the select with CAST(TA2.EarningsReportDate AS smalldatetime) but why do I have to do this?
Yes, I am SURE both servers have the column in question defined as a smalldatetime, as running the same select on either server causes the same failure, but only when referencing the LINKED server column.

I am no expert in sql, but I keep stubbling on this problem:I have a table t1 with 2 columns (a,b)I have a table t2 with 2 columns (c,d)I need to delete all records from t1 which have the same value (a,b)than the value of (c,d) in all records in the t2 table.I oracle, this is simple:delete from t1where (a,b) in (select c,d from t2)because Oracle has support for this syntax. Dont remember how they callit. But this is not support in sql server. So I have to resort to:delete from t1where a + '+' + b in ( select c + '+' + d from t2)Of course, a,b,c,d must be varchar for this to work. Basically I fake aunique key for the records. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks

Hi All,I had two Window NT 4.0 Server, say A and B... We recently upgradedfrom MS SQL Server 6.5 to MS SQL Server 2000 on Computer A, and forComputer B, I installed SQL Server 2000 from scratch. These two have asame RAM(512MB) and CPU speed...so the setup for hardware is almostidentical...For server A, there are around 10 connection to this SQL Server...For server B, there are also around 10 connection to this SQLServer...The database for SQL Server B is a copy from SQL Server A.... Irestored the database on SQL Server B from the backup dump of ServerA...We have a store procedure called usp_GetMemo(ID Interger) ... we feedID number to this store procedure and return its return Description...this table has ID column and it's Non-Cluster index, allow theduplicate row... there are 1.7 million records for this table...Here is problem... whenever i execute more than 100 times for thisstore procedure(usp_GetMemo(ID)) continuously, the CPU usage ofComputer A is 3 times bigger than computer B....I did run the command "DBCC DBReindex" , "Update Statistics" for thistable on computer A, but did not make any difference...Keep in mind that Computer A has been upgraded to SQL server 2000while Computer B installed from scratch... would that make differencesomehow?? Before the upgrading, the CPU usage of computer A is thesame as Computer B...Any help will be really appreciated,Thanks alot,Kim,

Dear all,
I am developing a proposal to my company, which is a microsoft select client, for introducing SQL 2005 to a new BI project. The company already has SQL 2000. I would like to have a full tabular format of SQL 2005 SSIS Features comparison to SQL server 2000 DTS.
Most of feature enhancement paper has only tell what is new but not tell about what is already existed and how much it is improved (in quality and quantity). Yes, tabular format is more useful.
I tried to search through microsoft.com, technet but still cannot find the relavent one. Would you please give me a web link ?
Please suggest. I am not impersonated myself like a competitor. You can verify my id by sending e-mail to chaivat.jirapummin@th.standardchartered.com

Hi,
I'm a newbie with SQL so excuse my igorance. I'm running an application that uses MSDE2000 as its source db and would like to create a small [10 field] db that would also use MSDE. I want to use a separate db though and not share the first one. What I'm looking for is suggestions on a development tool to create the database with as I'm not familiar with SQL tools. I have a lot of Access experience though so the concepts are not new.
Database requirements are pretty basic.
10 fields [8 text, 2 numeric]
A button field to Add New Record
A search field
Column sorting.
That's it. I could do this in a pinch with Access so knowing what tool to use should make it easy. Any chance that I could do it with Access and then port it to a SQL db?
Thanks,
Bob

we have a group of developers which have created and asked us (DBAs) tocreate many objects in the databases including tables / storedprocedures / functions / etc.since our company is growing, however we have an increasing amount ofobjects that have either been abandoned or have several versions.in an effort to clean of the huge amount of clutter and anytime thatsomething simple like a stored proc needs to change, it is almostimpossible to predict exactly where we will see negative effects ofthis change.i am looking for a system (preferably without developing our own tool)that would keep track of history of database objects (in terms of whocreated it and what purpose it has) as well as link that to all thedevelopers/users we might need to notify of any changes to that object. Also, this should be linked to the application which rely on theobject.bottom line... every object in the database needs to have at least 1corresponding contact as well as the applications which us it.with this information, we can much more easily maintain objects in ourDBs.thx
