Apr 29, 2008Hi there. I've created a windows forms app that connects to a sql server express database. now that it's working on my box, i need to install the entire solution on the end user's machine.
what's the best way to move the database? I found this article:

but i'm wondering if anyone can give me some insights based on your own experience.
I'm using ms visual studio 2005 and sql server express 2005.
I'm hoping that all i'll really have to do is copy everything over to the new machine and then edit my connection string in the .exe.config file for my app.

Windows Update Breaks SQL Server Express
Nov 3, 2007I've let my Vista Ultimate 64-bit installation on a Dell Precision M90 pretty much have its way with automatic update which has worked reasonably well...until now.
I've installed the MS CRM 3.0 laptop version into my Outlook client. Everything was working well until automatic update tried to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896) which failed. It also rendered the Online/Offline functionality unusable and, with the installation accomplished while I was Offline, all of my CRM data is sequestered. Uninstalling the CRM client and SQL Express with it while I'm in an Offline condition has some real downsides so I thought I'd try to fix the SP2 issue through this group and then work my way back through the product teams.
The Windows Update installer returns a failure code of 2B22.
I've tried the downloadable SP2 upgrade but only the SQLEXP32.EXE seems to be available through any of the links in the SQL Express pages I've yet visited, not the WOW version.

I just know that SQL Server Express Edition SP2 is being released by Microsoft recently, and from previous informations I gathered; it seemed that SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is not compatible with Windows Vista (any editions).
With the release of SP2, does this mean SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is now compatible with Windows Vista?
If so, do I have to install .NET Framework v2.0 first in my Windows Vista Business edition? BecauseI know that Vista Business edition already has .NET Framework v3.0 in it.

I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.

So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.

Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?
How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.

Jul 11, 2007I note that after installing sql server 2005 express onto a Windows 2003 server from a Windows XP pro computer I lose the ability to backup, specifically, the microsoft sql studio express lost or is missing the function (management -> Management plans) which allows for backups to be run at specified times.
How can I proceed to backup my SQL server 2005 express database ?

I can use my local connection right now to access the data, but I would like to change my connection so that it will work when installed on a client's machine.
My Current connection string looks like this:

I believe I could use something like this:

I am trying to install SQL Express on Window Home XP and SCC is returning the following error:
The SQL Server Configuration Checker cannot b execute due to WMI configuration on the machine ..... Error 2147942405 (0X80070005).
I tried running the following batch file which I believe resolved the same issue that someone else raised earlier (though I am not sure whether the OS was Home XP)
Will upgrading from XP Home to XP Professional (academic version) help me install SQL express successfully>

Windows App Cannot Access SQL Server Express DB (login Failure)
Jul 6, 2007I am using an unattended install script to install the database on the client machine. All the settings look correct. But my application cannot access the db -
Error: Cannot open database requested by the login.
Now when I install SQL Server Express manually, it works fine. I have the service running under local system and enabled user instances is true. I cannot figure out the problem(been working on it for 2 days).
Any ideas?

Mar 9, 2007I am now writing application to connect SQL Server Express in Windows Mobile 5.0.
While running the code, I got error "PlatformNotSupportedException". I realized that it is a problem on different locale on the PDA and the SQL Server. So I tried to re-install the SQL Server for another collation, which is Latin1_General_CI_AI. I have also set the collation to Latin1_General_CI_AI at database-level.
Unfortunately, in the Visual Studio Debugger, I found that the error message is
mscorlib.dll!System.Globalization.CultureInfo.CultureInfo(int culture = 3076, bool useUserOverride = true) + 0xc8 bytes
where the 3076 means Chinese (Hong Kong SAR, PRC) locale from MSDN.
Seems to me that I cannot really change the collation in this Express Edition.
How can I solve it?

I've just installed SQL Server Express 2005 on our shiny new Windows Server 2003 R x64 server. It has an Intel 830 D chip that uses x86 and 64EMT.
Problem is that I get the message "64-bit ASP.Net is Registered. Required 32-bit ASP.Net to install Microsoft Reporting Services 2005(32-bit)."
Is there any way that I can remedy this?

Windows App Cannot Access Database When Silently Installing SQL Server Express 05
Jul 6, 2007I have a windows app I am deploying by CD along with SQL Server - when I manually installed sql server my app can access the db (named instance, local system, mixed mode). I used the exact same settings to do an unattended install for sql express and it does not work. All the settings in the db look the same. Does anyone know what it could be?

Installing Management Studio On Windows XP Pro SP2 With SQL Server Express Installed
Jun 21, 2007I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition Management Tools [only] on my workstation which is running Widows XP Pro SP2. I already have VSTS 2005 installed with SQL Server Express and Management Studio Express Edition.
Attempting to do an advanced install with just the Management Tools specified under Client Components, results in the Version Check warning that setup must be run with SKUUPGRADE=1 specified. When I do that, the installation fails with an unexpected error. Clicking the 'Help' button, displays the following info:

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express On Windows Vista Business

Firstly, can someone confirm that this can be done. Because I am starting to wonder.
I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express install, and attempted to install. Everything goes well. Computer scan indicates that everything is in place, but then when it goes to install the components it states that the following components failed:
- SQL Native Client
- SQL Server Database Services
- Reporting Services
- Workstation Components, Books Online
(Successful items were SQL Setup Support Files, SQL VSS Writer, OWC11, SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files, SQL Server Management Studio Express).
For those Items that failed, I just get a message stating "Setup failed. Refer to Setup Log'. The setup log tells me little to nothing about why these components failed.
I am also getting the following message part way through install "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.mis'". Does anyone know what this means? I downloaded the install from microsoft.com just a few days ago, so if this isn't "valid", then where do I get a valid one.
I'm totally stuck. Have spent almost a day trawling documentation etc. to find why these have not installed, but cannot find any indication of why they wont install.. everything that needs to be in place is. Hoping someone has had similar issues and can help.

Sep 30, 2015In the registry in Windows 10, I looked inside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server. Is LoginMode still in some subfolder of that, or has it been moved to another place? Perhaps a differently named key is now used. Or perhaps it's configured in a config file for SQL Sever 2012 express.

But the SQL server installer gave an error - unable to update msxml6r.dll. Is this a bug of the SQL Server installer or do we need to make use of a more recent version of msxml6?

I get a the correct background to the site as in the tutorials, but only get "ERROR - unable to connect to the remote server", which may be indicative because this is all installed on my local machine (Dell AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+ 2.11 Ghz, 1GB, Windows Ultimate). I have gone through How to install ... on a Windows Vista-based computer, KB934164, and most recently, How to configure .. to allow remote connections, kb 914277, in hopes of addressing the "remote server" issue. I still can't get past this obstacle. PLEASE HELP!! :-)
