Jul 11, 2007

Hi Guys,

I'm in need of your help. Before running my dataflow task i want to check sql server availability on the network.

If not found then i want to stop the processing of the package.

My last post also has the same question but it wasn't answered yet so......... just check the 2nd last post and the last post:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1834575&SiteID=1

Is there are way to check from SSIS package?

Thank you

SQL Server 2014 :: Modification Of SSIS Package With AlwaysOn Availability Replica?

Dec 1, 2014

We are currently using 2008 environment. We do have an SSIS Package running. The package used to run everyday and take the production server full backups and restore into the another server. Then do some delete commands and do some updates in that database on that server (We have some sensitive data other than Production we have to run that scripts in any environment). After run all those delete statements another team will read the data from that database.

We are planning to migrate to 2014 and set up always on and use the replica as the source. In this case how the package will work?

How to change that SSIS package. With the 2014 always on we are directly reading the data there is no backups to restore then how to run the delete statements?

Availability Of SSIS Run-time Support (Redistributable Package)?

May 23, 2007

Can somebody please help answering this question?

I'm planning to consider writing a SSIS package for a new project that requires downloading large chunk of data and transform into the diverse databases such as MS SQL or Oracle depending on the Client's Datbase.

For the clients having SQL Server installed at their end, i had no issues in deploying this package on their server and run it in their licensed instance.

What should be the case for others having Oracle database? Wouldn't installing the SQL 2005 client tools install the necessary run-time services for running SSIS packages? What i understood from the MSDN library (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms403355.aspx) is that there's no run-time support available for running the SSIS packages (unlike DTS run-time support) in production environment!

Would that mean that it requires a SQL Standard edition, at minimum, (as Integration Services is OOTB from Standard Edition onwards) to be installed at the production site to run this package?

If so, the client wouldn't be ready (which is fair too) to buy the new license just to run this package. Is there any work-around/suggestions for this case?

If not, can somebody please point me to the right location where i can download the run-time support for running SSIS packages?

Any thoughts on this is highly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Server Availability

Jan 20, 2006

I am in the process of setting up server replication using the Central Publisher Model. We are doing this for application availability. The application is a .NET app and this application uses the SQL Server name in the connection string. As far as I know we can€™t have two severs on the same domain with the same name. So if our primary server (server A) goes down and that server name is in the connection string how does the application get redirected to our backup server (server B). Thanks for the help.

How Can I Verify The Availability Of An SQL Server

Nov 18, 2006

Hello everyone,

I have an ASP application mainly connected to one SQL database that works great but now I am trying to add some functionality that requires to connect to another remote SQL server. Till now all is fine except that the remote SQL server is not always online and of course when this happens my ASP application stops with the following error:

Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (0x80004005)
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]Specified SQL server not found.

in my Global.asa I setup my session variables for DSN connections and in my pages I call my SQL connection as follow:

Set Conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Conn.Open Session("MySQL")

SQL = "my SQL statement here;"
Set RS = Conn.Execute(SQL)

Every time the page hits the Conn.Open line I get the error if the remote SQL is not online!!!

Is there a way I can check a sort of returned error code holding the connection status before getting to the Conn.Open line???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Determine Which Server Is Currently Active For Availability Groups

Nov 25, 2014

I want two write a small script to determine which is the currently active (primary) server in the AG.

Right now, I see that using SELECT * FROM SYS.dm_hadr_availability_replica_states I can determine the role. However, when the server goes down and switches to the secondary node, I don't believe that the role changes (or does it?). How do I determine which is the active node?

SQL Server In A High Availability Environment

May 26, 2004

I've been asked to look into the possibility of using SQL Server in a high availability environment. We have a few web based applications that use SQL Server back end DBs. What we are looking into is whether we can use multiple instances (on multiple physical servers) of SQL Server using some type of clustering/load balancing. I haven't worked with SQL Replication before, so I'm not even sure where to start in exploring the possible avenues we can explore.

Can anyone push me in the right direction? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bill

Checking Server Availability When Using Dynamic Server/DB Names

Apr 15, 2008

I am building an SSIS package that is hitting about 50 remote servers. I have a for each loop container that i am using to build the list of servers to run.

The problem is...sometimes networks go down, sometimes connections time out and this causes my entire package to fail. I inserted a task that will run select @@ServerName on the remote server inside the loop. My thought was, if this returns an error I could ignore it and move on to the next server in the list and log somewhere that server x threw an error. Logging is easy, the problem is, how do I then tell it to move on to the next server in the loop?

If anyone has any suggestions on how better to do this, I am open for alternatives...

SQL 2012 :: Server Clustered Availability Group

Jul 30, 2014

I have 2, 2 node clusters

PROD1(cluster 1) Clustered SQL instance1
PROD2(cluster 1)
DR 1 (cluster 2) Clustered SQL insatace 2
DR 2 (cluster 2)

I have set an availability group up from the PROD instance to the DR instance. How does the AG behave if a SQL instance fails at PROD? Does it try to fail over to Node 2 on Prod before going over to DR? or bring the Replica at DR online straight away? Can we only use Manual Failover of the AG in this scenario to make use of the High Availability of the Windows cluster?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: CDC And AlwaysOn Availability Groups

Apr 2, 2015

The MSDN doc makes it sound like after a failover of the primary, the CDC data won't "keep working" on the secondary unless you "To allow the logreader to proceed further and still have disaster recovery capacity, remove the original primary replica from the availability group using ALTER AVAILABITY GROUP <group_name> REMOVE REPLICA. Then add a new secondary replica to the availability group."

We have a few CDC tracked tables that we use and the general idea of AlwaysOn I thought was to minimize all the overhead and let things "just work" so your apps just connect and the listener re-routes everything where it needs to go.

It looks like to get this working properly an automated job /trigger would have to wait for a failover event and then kick off tasks to remove and re-add the replica and perhaps start up the CDC job on the secondary?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: High Availability - Job Error

Aug 18, 2015

I am trying to create a job that runs against my High Availability listener server.

It is a fairly simple SQL statement in the job - execute tsql.

When I try and run the job I get the error:

Executed as user: NT SERVICESQLAgent$SQL2014A. The target database ('BB_Prod') is in an availability group and is currently accessible for connections when the application intent is set to read only. For more information about application intent, see SQL Server Books Online. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 978). The step failed.

I thought there was a way to run a select statement as a job against the listener? The tsql step is only a select.

Is there a way to pass in the application intent = readonly as part of my SQL statement?

SQL Server 2012 :: Automatically Adding New Databases To Availability Group

Oct 28, 2013

automatically replicates new databases to Availability Group partners - if you do a little prep work on your environment first. To make it work:

1) Create linked servers on all group members pointing to all other servers in the group, with names matching the hostnames they represent.
2) Ensure suitable credentials (or 'current context' impersonation) for linked servers. Also: Enable RPC and RPC OUT
3) Run the DDL code below.
4) Schedule hadr_replicate_queue on [master] to run as often as you want initial syncs to occur. Every 5-10 minutes is plenty for most purposes.
5) Connect to an availability group listener and call CREATE DATABASE :)

I use a slightly more extended version of this code at home to do things like permissions synchronization across replicas - I essentially allow applications to install direct to an availability group replica and then have all the relevant objects replicate to other nodes. I don't really like going through manually and doing things, even though there's an AddIn from SQLSkills for management studio - it still requires manual intervention.

The main use I have for this at home is that I'm using the Azure pack, and want to automatically ensure that my newly created 'SQL Server Cloud' databases are highly available, plus it means when I install a non-alwayson aware product it doesn't require any extra work afterwards to allow failover to another machine.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Load Balancing With Availability Groups

Aug 28, 2014

We are having a conversation at work and the subject of load balancing with SQL came up. Right now we are running SQL Server 2014 on four (4) machines. I am using a AlwaysOn with Availability Groups (AG). Now I know that we can scale out the reading in AG by allowing the secondary serves to receive reads.

Is there a way to be able to do this with writes? Can I have in essences 2 masters that some how reconcile with each other? We are expecting a huge amount of writes in the near future and we need a way for SQL to handle the amount of traffic we are expecting with out any issues.

I explored the possibility of Peer - to - Peer replication; however, it seems that it would be more work if we are constantly making updates to the database scheme.

The other node was in resolving state. When the restarted server is back, the AG went back to that server. I checked the sys.availability groups field for failover property failure condition level, it's set to 1 which means service restarts should initiate the failover.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: AlwaysOn Availability Group Configuration

Jun 17, 2015

What I asked for: Three Windows Server 2012 R2 machines with independent storage running a SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group. DB1 would be the primary, DB2 would be a synchronous replica, and DB3 would be a remote asynchronous replica.

What I was given: a two-node Windows Server 2012 R2 WSFC to run SQL Server 2014 Enterprise with shared storage and a third (remote) Windows Server 2012 R2 machine with independent storage, also with SQL Server 2014 Enterprise, to host an AlwaysOn Availability Groups asynchronous replica.

DB1 and DB2 (as Cluster1) share an E: drive. The remote DB3 has its own E: drive. Initially, DB3’s E: drive was claimed as a cluster resource and I couldn’t even see it. I’ve had several ugly days trying to make this work and have temporarily given up, installing DB3 as a standalone SQL Server that is no longer part of the WSFC and pointing everything towards that (it was originally a third node in the WSFC).

Is it possible to create an AlwaysOn Availability Group with nested clusters (i.e. create the AOAG with Cluster1 and DB3 and somehow ignore the individual nodes that comprise Cluster1)?

When I do a test run of the rebuilds in my test environment it uses 100G of space - which is fine with me.

When I do a rebuild in my High Availability environment - same DB, same script - it eats up over 600G of space and fills the volume.

What can I do without removing my DB from H/A to rebuild the indexes?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Database Backups And AlwaysOn Availability Groups

Oct 16, 2014

This is my first deployment of an always on availability group for SQL 2014 and I'm trying to get my custom backup procedure to handle all databases appropriately depending on the primary group. Basiscally I want the system databases and all databases that don't participate in the availability group to be backed up on both nodes and those that do participate backed up ONLY on the primary server. I've looked at the sys.fn_hadr_backup_is_preferred_replica funcation, but would like to only have to test for a single databases existance in the availability group. If the one database is in the group, only backup the system databases and those that don't participate, otherwise backup everydatabase. This would be the case for both full backups and transaction logs.
