Our HP representatives are telling us that backing/restoring our MS SQL
Servers with "HP Data Protector (HPDP)" is better and safer than using
MS Sql's backup/restore process.
I have strong hesitations, because MS Sql's processes gives us a great
deal of flexability.
Has anyone have any experience wsith "HP Data Protector (HPDP)"?
Our IT is pushing HP Data Protector (HPDP) on us. Anyone ever see it in action?

backup server of higher configuration we wanted to swap the data we installed nt and sql server in the new server will a cut paste of the data directory of the live server to the backup server is sufficient or the data directory to be restored to the respective files through sql enterprise manager please do clarify me

I want to take backup only last 1 year(last 365 days) data using SQL script.
If data is modified (by an insert, update, or delete) while the backup is running, will the backup contain those changes or will it be added to the database afterwards?

I had SQL Server 2000 installed like below:
Installation Directory = C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server
Default data directory = D:
Default log directory = D:
I found out that the data is stored in D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLdata and backup is done in D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLackup
However, Microsoft says we should never put the ..ackup and ..data folders in the same partition.
My question is: How can I move the path of the backup directory?
I checked the registy but this is what I found:

I have automated process, which synchronizes a transactional publication using initialize from backup approach. It drops subscriptions and puts them back again once the restore on the subscriber is completed.
Dropping the subscriptions causes a lot of blocking and deadlocking. I've decided to remove those steps, but it causes loss of data on the subscriber.
Is it a must to drop and re-create the subscriptions during such process? If not, how can I avoid the loss of data?
SQL Server 2008 r2 - 6 GB memory...I attempted a backup on a 500GB database but it was taking way too long. I checked the resources on the box and saw the CPU at 100%. I checked the SQL Server activity log and saw a hung query (user was not even logged on) that had multiple threads so I killed it and now the CPU utilization is back to normal.
Trouble is, now all of the threads in the activity monitor for the backup show 'suspended' and the backup appears to be not doing anything.
Need to restore database,here's the scenario:
Data got deleted on Friday evening, need to have database restored to FRiday afternoon and also some data has been entered on Monday, which needs to be there.
Windows 2003 backup utility uses the shadow copy option that allows it to copy open files.
Therefore, can I use this utility to backup the .mdf and .ldf files for my SQL 2000 database?
I can then attach the .mdf files if I need to restore the database to another server.
Can anyone tell me if this is safe? I've tried it and it worked but I'm worried there maybe some lurking danger in using this approach.

I have only one tape drive.
My server is using the SQL server 2005 backup tool and arcserve backup tool to backup different files .
Everytime I need to disable and enable the tape device driver (in device manager /windows) before I can use SQL server 2005 backup tool.

It seems that the tape device resource is held by softwares even the tape drive is not in use.
What should I do to make the tape drive shared by different softwares?

I want to know how people are backup up their win2k system and SQL 2000 server. If you want a run backup once a night and first backup win2k file system and then run backup using sql agent will that work?

In other words, can we leave the third part backup tool active or it should be taken away?

I've recently started working with a public sector organisation who have 4 clustered sql instances that has 80% of it's db mirrored.
Looking at the transaction log - it seems that a transaction log backup is a good idea as the log is 4x larger than the data file.But I'm not allowed access to the physical server to check onto which drive I can create the trn. No RDP, no vmware - let's be honest I'm not even allowed to launch cmd line Also the Server Manager informs me "We will need to carefully look at database backups if you guys want to start doing these backups on box, as that will break our off box backup routine (it will screw the transaction chain)."
I don't understand how backing up the transaction log could break the "transaction chain"?
I currently have a SQL Server cluster setup with a Primary DB Server SERVER1 and the Standby server SERVER2. I have an issue to restore an encrypted backup via GUI.I can restore an encrypted backup on another instance using t-sql command, but cannot do the same using the GUI of sql server 2014. The message error is: No backupset selected to be restored.I have restored the master key from the instance where the encrypted backup was created on the instance where I want to restore the encrypted backup, then restored the certificate. I have a sproc that will generate a dynamic call (and this must be done in a stored procedure),... Anyway the dynamic call I am having problems with is that I need to dynamically create a statement to backup a database. It works as long as the database is on the same server / instance as the stored procedure. I want to be able to from server/instance A create a command that does a backup of a database that is on server B. I just can't figure out the syntax for a database backup where the database is on another server.
Trying something like [ServerName].[DatabaseName] does not work...

This is a very urgent requirement of my client having 200 stores and one Head office. the HO has just installed SQL-Server 2005, The HO sends small backups of the data related to stock transfer which needs to be restored at stores. It was working find when both the HO and stores were SQL-Server 2000. but the process has come to a dead halt as the HO has SQL-Server 2005. It is not possible to convert the stores immediately. please help me out.

I note that after installing sql server 2005 express onto a Windows 2003 server from a Windows XP pro computer I lose the ability to backup, specifically, the microsoft sql studio express lost or is missing the function (management -> Management plans) which allows for backups to be run at specified times.
How can I proceed to backup my SQL server 2005 express database ?

we are having problems with a server Intel RZeon 3ghz, 3gb ram running 2003 service pack 2 with a 70gb drive and and 400 gb drive all with adequate free space. There are 6 hard disks in total and i assume operating at least RAID 5. We have SQL2000 server with a few standard sized databases and a connection to one other server.
A few months ago the back up of SQL server databases started taking 4- 5 hours when before it took 20 minutes. We had actually lost one of our disks in the RAID array and it before this was spotted by our engineers we reindexed the sql databases and defragged both 70gbC: and D: 400gb drives hoping to correct this slow down. Unfortunately the new disk had not been correctly seated and this was why it was taking 4-5 hours. After fixing the disk the backups took 12 minutes again but then started taking 2-3 hours after a few days.
The reindex/defrag did seem to improve the speed of the backups to 12 minutes (from 20 minutes) when the backup did function correctly (also the sql databases' performance improved). However the backups only take 12 minutes after a server reboot - this can last from only 2, up to 5 backups(days) in a row before a slow down to 2-3 hours and again only a reboot will sort out this problem.
NB this intermittent slowdown only occurred after the disk failure.
We have tried monitoring SQL server and can find no CPU/RAM intensive clashes or long running jobs interferring with the back up. Does anyone know what might be going on here? and if there are any server monitoring tools that may help us discover what is causing this problem ?

I was running Small Business Server 2003 with MS SQL Server 2000. I put backups of all my SQL Server 2000 databases on hard disk d: and the operating system and applications on c:/. I then reformatted c:/ (but left d:/ intact) and installed Windows XP Home. Then I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition.
I would like to now restore the backups of the SQL Server 2000 databases (still intact on drive d:/) to SQL Server 2005, but I get a variety of error messages.
I suspect that I am going about this the wrong way. I have done several hours of research in the documentation without success. I cannot attach the SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 because it is a backup, not a database. I cannot migrate the databases as part of the installation of SQL Server 2005 because (a) they are back-ups, and (b) I don't have SQL Server 2000 installed when I install SQL Server 2005.
Is there a solution?

I believe SQL Server 7.0 can do this, will I be able to use ARCserverIT or seagates's backup exec to perform these functions ?

I have an urgent requirement to setup a backup SQL server 2000. This will run as a mirror of the live SQL server 2000 which processes about 5000+ statements per minute. I will need to keep the mirror server as close to the live as possible, so if we need to take down the live server we can switch users to the backup server (it’s ok I can do this in code – client side.) and I may also be reporting from this server to take some of the strain from the live server (if that’s wise – not sure yet).
Can someone please point me in the right direction? What other software (apart from MS SQL server 2000) will I need?
What sort of link do I need between both servers? (note: I don't want to do this link using triggers for each table if possible)
Are there any pitfalls to look out for (i.e. I seem to remember something about auto id fields in tables but this was a long time ago so I could be wrong).
Please note I am a programmer with a lot of experience, but I don’t know that much about setting up SQL servers (well I can install one locally on my dev machine, but that’s really as far as I go) but I am willing to learn and investigate anything, so just giving me sites that I can look at will be enough.
