SqlDataSource And Performance
Dec 14, 2006
Is there any difference in performance between a SqlDataSource and an
ObjectDataSource - assuming they are being deployed to perform the same
task against a SQL Server database?
More
specifically, will the use of the SqlDataSource in itself lead to
scalability issues at some stage that the ObjectDataSource wouldn't? Or is use of the SqlDataSource discouraged purely for design/architectural reasons (eg 2-Layer == Bad : 3+ Layer == Good)?

I'm using visual basic coded datasets right now, and caching them, so as all of my web app users access the cache once the first person's gone to my site and initiallized the page.
If Cache("ds_cache") Is Nothing Then
Dim ds As New DataSet
blah blah code blah blah blah
Cache.Insert("ds_cache", ds)
End If
What I was wondering is, if it's possible to cache the datasets that get created and are used by Sqldatasources. Or if by chance caching is automatically done and controlled for these datasets, as it's the server that makes and handles them.
The reason I wonder about this because I'm not sure how you go about referencing one of those datasets, because you can't give them a name/id. And I've not found mention anywhere of you being able to do so.
The real point or question I'm trying to get at is to see which performs better , or uses less requests back to the server for the data as a lot of my data will be repeatedly used by all of my users and so I'd like to save myself from using as many repeated connections as possibles in regards to using a typed dataset versus filling my controls from a sqldatasource?
Thank you in advance for your response.

There are so many ways to use database in asp.net/ado.net, I'm a bit confused about their difference from the performance point of view.So apparently SqlDataSource in DataReader mode is faster than DataSet mode, at a cost of losing some bolt-on builtin functions.What about SqlDataSource in DataReader mode vs manual binding in code? Say creating a SqlDataSource ds1 and set "DataSourceID" in Gridview, vs manually creating the SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlDataReader objects and mannually bind the myReader object to the gridview with the Bind() method.Also Gridview is a very convenient control for many basic tasks. But for more complex scenarios it requires lots of customization and modification. Now if I do not use gridview at all and build the entire thing from scratch with basic web controls such as table and label controls, and mannually read and display everything from a DataReader object, how's the performance would be like compared to the Gridview-databind route?

What is the C# code I use to do this?
I'm guessing it should be fairly simple, as there is only one row selected. I just need to pull out a specific field from that row and then insert that value into a different SqlDataSource.

1. Use mssql server agent service to take the schedule
2. Use a .NET windows service with timers to call SqlClientConnection
above, which way would be faster and get a better performance?

Hello Everyone,I have a very complex performance issue with our production database.Here's the scenario. We have a production webserver server and adevelopment web server. Both are running SQL Server 2000.I encounted various performance issues with the production server with aparticular query. It would take approximately 22 seconds to return 100rows, thats about 0.22 seconds per row. Note: I ran the query in singleuser mode. So I tested the query on the Development server by taking abackup (.dmp) of the database and moving it onto the dev server. I ranthe same query and found that it ran in less than a second.I took a look at the query execution plan and I found that they we'rethe exact same in both cases.Then I took a look at the various index's, and again I found nodifferences in the table indices.If both databases are identical, I'm assumeing that the issue is relatedto some external hardware issue like: disk space, memory etc. Or couldit be OS software related issues, like service packs, SQL Serverconfiguations etc.Here's what I've done to rule out some obvious hardware issues on theprod server:1. Moved all extraneous files to a secondary harddrive to free up spaceon the primary harddrive. There is 55gb's of free space on the disk.2. Applied SQL Server SP4 service packs3. Defragmented the primary harddrive4. Applied all Windows Server 2003 updatesHere is the prod servers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.67GHZTotal Physical Memory 2GB, Available Physical Memory 815MBWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1Here is the dev serers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz2GB DDR2-SDRAMWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1I'm not sure what else to do, the query performance is an order ofmagnitude difference and I can't explain it. To me its is a hardware oroperating system related issue.Any Ideas would help me greatly!Thanks,Brian T*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***

hi all,
in all my 2.0 learnings and books i keep coming across the page element <asp:sqldatasource>.
I have always (in 1.1) used server side connections and adapters to bind my Sql datasets to any control needed. Now that im learning 2.0 im finding it difficult to understand using control on the page to bind my data. Can someone explain the benefits of using this data source? Ideally i would like to keep my data access layer separate from my presentation layer but i'd really like to understand why this method seems so popular.
thanks in advance,

I used SQLDataSource to specify the .mdf file so I can connect to my tables but when I click on the advanced button to generate the Insert, Update, Delete SQL I find it grayed out and it cannot be clicked. I looked into several tutorials online and I couldn't find the problem, can anyone explain what I am missing or doing wrong? Any suggestion is very appreciated. Thanks

Hello All,
I have quick question ..
In my aspx page i have gridview and Sql DataSource object as you can see
<asp:sqldatasource id="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ></asp:sqldatasource>
<asp:gridview id="GridView1" runat="server" allowpaging="True" allowsorting="True" autogeneratecolumns="False" datasourceid="SqlDataSource1">
<columns>
<asp:boundfield datafield="breakdownid" headertext="breakdownid" insertvisible="False"
readonly="True" sortexpression="breakdownid" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="ticketno" headertext="ticketno" sortexpression="ticketno" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="systemtype" headertext="systemtype" sortexpression="systemtype" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="break_date" headertext="break_date" readonly="True" sortexpression="break_date" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="subject" headertext="subject" sortexpression="subject" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="status" headertext="status" sortexpression="status" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="prioritylevel" headertext="prioritylevel" sortexpression="prioritylevel" />
<asp:boundfield datafield="mobiletype" headertext="mobiletype" sortexpression="mobiletype" />
</columns>
</asp:gridview>
In codebehind file i call a function to get data from database. what i want is to bind the result to the sqlDataSourse not the gridview.
I need to have the SqlDataSourse thier.. Any help please
Sub Page_load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
If Not Page.IsPostBack Then
Dim objReader As New Dynamic.Reportsdemo
SqlDataSource1 = .objReader.Get_Tickets(1, 0, "all")
SqlDataSource1.DataBind()
objReader.objconnection.Close()
End If
End Sub
Thanks.

If li.Selected = True Then

DataSource2.Insert()

Next
When more than one checkbox is ticked, I'm getting the error 'The variable name '@ProgrammeID' has already been declared'. How do I close or reset my Datasource before I try and use it again?

Hi, I want to know when to use an sqlDataSource object because I used to populate for example a listBox control in visual studio net 2003 from AQLK server database by using a connection object, command object, dataAdapter object and a DataSet object. I discovered if I use sqlDataSource object (using visual studio net 2005) ,all I need is to write the connection string and a Select statement as properties for that sqlDataSource, so why to use the above mentioned objects(connection,command,adapter,dataset) while I can access any database in sql server through the use of sqlDataSource?
I appreciate if you can explain to me the difference and when to use an sqlDataSource
thx

Hi,
I have an application w/ n-tier design so I've never used the SqlDataSource up to this point but having to do my own sorting for GridViews is not something I want to keep dealing with. I'd like to take advantage of some of the packaged features too.
My question is: are there any purists out there who opted to use SqlDataSource. If so, what do you think about it? It's nice that SqlDataSource makes things simple but having data classes and dealing w/ exceptions in those classes certainly make an application pretty robust. Should I entertain the idea of using SqlDataSource or stay as a purist and keep doing things the old fashioned way?
