We have a JDBC project that works with SQLServer, along with otherDBs. During development, we noticed that resource useage on SQLServerseemed to grow steadily - Processes, Process Locks and/or Object Locks, according to the "Current Activity" section of Enterprise Manager.Fairly quickly (a few hours), SQLServer would use so many resources itused up all available system memory and the system would crash.Without understanding much about why that was happening, mostly out oftrial and error, we started using transactions, which seemed to fix theproblem. Now, one of our customers seems to be seeing the problem again:511 Process Locks, 18 Object Locks, 526 Processesafter a few hours. The system runs out of memory and crashes. We havemultiple test configurations, including Linux, Win2K, XP, but we donot see the same behaviour - we typically see no more than 20 or 30processes, process locks or object locks, and our tests seem to runindefinitely. Since we can not reliably reproduce the symptoms that ourcustomer sees, it is very difficult for us to analyze, let alone, fixthe problem.Does anyone - especially SQLServer pros - have any insight as to what isgoing on here and/or how to fix it? Like how does a process, processlock or object lock relate to JDBC? process <-> connection, object <-> row, table... or what, locks? Thanks,Gary WhittenJoin Bytes!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2005 server that is upgraded to SP2 and the error log indicates it is version 9.00.3042.00. However, the system resource database for the same server is reporting as version 9.00.2047.00. From another post I have found out the some replication problems I am having are due to this discrepancy.
I have reapplied SP2 hoping it would change the resource db version, but it did not. Is there another way I can upgrade the resource db without re-installing SQL from scratch?
Thanks!

I am going through the BOL for Sql Server 2005 and i came across the topic of RESOURCE DATABASE.

Hello,
Im doing research for my company for a project we are about to start, but the more I find, the more Im confusing myself. Maybe someone would be so nice to help me a little.
We need a database solution, either licensing (ISV) or i think maybe an embedded database. if its licensing, its not a problem, but after research, im thinking licensing would be a waste of time or too much and theire not enough information to go by just that.
Problem: Need to develop software for a client where there will be around 300 users using the system (not all at once neccisarrily). We are creating this software for them and they want to re-sell it after completion, but they do not want to make their customers purchase a database for the purchase of their software. (because of all types of licensing). We need the database RUNTIME to run on the customers machine to make the software work.
Is there a RUNTIME license for Independant-Software-Vendor(IVS) for redistribution? or would it make sense to embed a database ( for example, the free edition of sql server;embeeded feature :), or maybe firebird embedded database?) We are developing in Visual Studio 2005.
This might sound confusing, thats where im at. For those of you with more experience, hopefully you understand what im talking about.
Thank you. I have 2 days to find a solution. Ill continue looking and post in thread if i find anything new or clearify my problem.
I inherited an existing database application about 6 months ago. I'vefinished converting it to use SQL Server 2000 as the backend (MS Access2002 frontend w/ Userforms+VBA code pointing to the backend). In its current state the application makes use of a ton of embedded SQLstatements and I'm thinking about the best way to clean this up. Itseems like the best way would probably to encapsulate each of the SQLstatements into its own stored proc and then have the MS Accessapplication call the sp. However, this would result in a very largenumber of stored procedures.Anyone have any links or suggestions regarding best practices onremoving embedded SQL scattered throughout a DB app? Thanks.

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Thanks!!
Copy mssqlsystemresource.mdf of a recently upgraded server and paste to an old server have same effect of upgrading via .exe installation?
My idea is to save time and administrative efforts in upgrades (Service Packs and/or Cumulative Updates) using this method.
According to BOL:
The Resource database makes upgrading to a new version of SQL Server an easier and faster procedure. In earlier versions of SQL Server, upgrading required dropping and creating system objects. Because the Resource database file contains all system objects, an upgrade is now accomplished simply by copying the single Resource database file to the local server.
Hello,
I have an SQLServer Mobile database, and I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade it to SQLServer 2005 (.mdf) database. My database has no records in it, just the structure (tables etc). What I am actually asking is if I can create automatically a new SQLServer 2005 Database with the same structure as my existin SQLSErver Mobile database
Thanks in advance,

Good Afternoon.
I am trying to write a short application within which I would like to embed a SQL Server Express database, all of which would be deployed via ClickOnce through a web site. The installation process seems to be working without trouble, including installation of the .NET Framework 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005.
When the application launches on the new machine, however, I get a big Microsoft .NET Framework "Unhandled exception" error dialog box that indicates the database already exists and that the database file could not be attached. I am working with a clean virtual machine that I know has never had the database installed on it.
I fear I am overlooking something quite straightforward, but since this is the first time I have ever attempted to build a data-bound application, I am not sure where I am going wrong.
Perhaps the source of the problem, or a related problem, might be revealed even when I run the application in debug mode from within Visual Studio. I can run the application once, but if I try to run it again, I get an error when I try to open the database connection that is similar in content (database already exists...could not attach). I can run the SSEUtil and detach the database and then run the application again in debug mode and it works no problem (the first time!).
Lastly, if I install the application on the machine on which it was developed and make sure the database is detached, it will run without any trouble (even repeatedly). But, on a new blank machine, there is no database listed that matches my database name, so I cannot try to detach anything!?
My apologies for such a novice question!

I am learning dotnet thru Microsoft Official Curriculum and I got stuck up at one point. That is I couldn't configure the required databases according to the sql server I have installed and configured. I created a doctors database and while configuring using the below code I couldn't know what is 'ASPNET' in "SELECT @s = @@servername + 'ASPNET'"
Also what is 'webuser'
---Configure Doctors
USE doctors
GO
DECLARE @s varchar(50)
SELECT @s = @@servername + 'ASPNET'
EXECUTE sp_grantlogin @s
EXECUTE sp_grantdbaccess @s, 'webuser'
GO

GRANT EXECUTE ON [getDrSpecialty] TO webuser
GRANT SELECT ON [specialties] TO webuser
GRANT SELECT ON [doctors] TO webuser
GRANT SELECT ON [drspecialties] TO webuser

Can anyone help me how to solve my problem?
Your help would be very much appreciated

I have a DTS package that transfers some columns defined as varchar(8000).
Sometimes, the values in the columns defined this way have embedded CR/LF in them. When they do, DTS does not always transfer the values to the target.
Any idea why? Workarounds? TIA.

Hi,
I have a hard time copying my db (or instance?) from a SQL Server 2000 db which resides at my web host. I have Sql Server 2005 Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express on my computer and, well, there is no "ftp-like" option so I don't have a clue about how to proceed. I've read many posts on the net on this matter but nothing seems to apply to this, in my mind, rather common, configuration.
I have receieved Excel docs that should be appended to tables in my db. I have successfully installed DTS (see http://mobiledeveloper.wordpress.com/ for details - it's really simple but takes two hours) so I have a wizard for the actual import from Excel. My plan is now to
1. download/detach/whatever my table/db/part of the web host's db and download it to my computer. Then
2. fill the tables with the data from Excel. And finally, to
3. upload/attach/whatever my local db or table to the web host again.
I'm sooo confused, please, please help me out here!

View 1 Replies View RelatedHi;I thought I would rephrase a question I asked in another post to morequickly get to the heart of the matter. My apologies for anyone whois offended by what appears to be a repetition. My company has two identical web sites. One copy is for our customer, and one copy is for us to test our code changes on.We developed a hard to isolate bug in the copy of the web stie for ourcustomers. We believe the bug might be data related. We would like to replace our test database with our productiondatabase to try to reproduce the problem without interrupting ourservice to our customers. The test database and production database have all the same tables andstructures, but the names of the databases are slightly different. We have tried dropping tables from our test database and importingtables from our customer database in Management Studio. We got thedata but the identity fields were turned off as identities. We canmanually turn them back on in Management Studio, but we have severalhundred tables. In the end we just want to the data from our customer db to be in ourtest db with the test db name being the same, and have our identityfields preserved. What is the easiest way to do this? Thanks in advance for anyinformationSteve

View 2 Replies View RelatedHi all,
this is thiru from India, hope i shall get answers here for my questions.
1. I need to import an Excel spread sheet to a remote sql server database through ASP.Net web application. I brief the process im following now please go through it.
Import Process:
a. select a fiile(.xls) and upload it to server.
b. using M/S Odbc Excel driver, and the uploaded excel file as datasource,
c. query the excel sheet to populate a dataset.
d. iterate through the rows of the dataset(I could not bulk copy the excel data, because
have to check the database, if record exists then update, else insert) to import to the
SQL Database
Performance issues:
1. I have to import spreadsheets having upto 60,000 records or even more at a time.
2. Is this a good option to use a webapplication for this task (I use this approach because
my boss wants to do so).
3. some times the excel file size grows up to 7 mb(Though i shall adjust config settings,
uploading and then querying a 7 mb file shall be an ovverhead i think.)
4. is there any possibility to get the datasource with out uploading the file to the server (Like
modifying the connection string as "datasource=HtmlFileControl.PostedFile" instead,)(I
tried this but it gives me "unspecified error").
please analyse my problem and suggest me a possible solution.
I thank all, for your efforts, of any kind.

In Oracle & Sybase you can set login resource limits to restrict, time of day, number of i-o's, cpu use etc for any login, at the login method. All actions done from a resource limit constrained login inherit the constraints.
Is there any way to implment this with any MS SQL Server version from 200-2005/SP2?
Before anyone answers, please do not suggest set rowcount etc.
thanks.
