SqlServer Weekend Job Blocked By A User Left Open Screen
Jul 20, 2005
Hello!
We have a maintenance job on MSSQL server scheduled for the weekend.
some times we arrive at the beginning of a week and see that a user left
his screen open on a SQL record and the job is still waiting blocked by
that user. Please give me an idea how to overcome this.
Thanks in advance

I have a problem where my connection always has an open transaction as viewed by activity monitor.
I am using the latest MS SQL Server 2005 JDBC driver (1.1) and connecting to SQL Server 2000.
This issue arises only when selectMethod=cursor and autoCommit is set to false. This issue does not exist when I connect to SQL Server 2005.
Has anyone else seen this issue?
How can this issue be resolved?
Thanks
Peter

I get the below error only when my IDE open. It connects well when it is found closed.
[SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'JPASPNET'.]
I could solve this by giving the logged in windows user to impersonate under IIS window > WEBSITE > ASP.NET tab > EDIT CONFIG > APPLICATION tab
But I wish someone could give me the proper solution.
I almost tried all from giving ASPNET user as a administrator to configuring the same in Express management tool.
Environment: XP pro, VWD and SQL Express

Hello every one i had a design question.What would be the best way to approach a problem such as a perventing unsed and left open sql connections i have written a class called DataBase Manger but my question is should this class be static or none-static. right now the way i have is something like this private SqlConnection Get() { SqlConnection sqlCon = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["StringConnetionName"].ConnectionString); sqlCon.Open(); return sqlCon; } /// <summary> /// Closes a connection to the Database /// </summary> /// <param name="sqlCon"> Database connection to close</param> private void Let(SqlConnection sqlCon) { sqlCon.Close(); sqlCon = null; } then for example to run a store proc i have public int RunProc(string procName, params SqlParameter[] p) {
SqlConnection con = Get();
try {
using (SqlCommand cmd = CreateCommand(con, procName, p)) {
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
return (int)cmd.Parameters["ReturnValue"].Value;
}
} finally { Let(con); }
} now every time in any class or method i need to create a new Database manager and call the run proc object. Would it be a better desing to make this class static? so it would be just DataBaseManger.RunProc(blah,blah) or is it a better OO design to have it the way i have it. is is more secure in a webapplication? can these connections be hijacked? thanks in adanvce, any help would greatly be apperiated. or any link to any related tutorials thanks,Amir

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
I would be grateful if you can help me

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is simple, I'm no DBA but have been tasked with solving this problem...
We have a website that connects via ODBC to SQL Server (2k sp1) and at the moment I am getting back about every other time:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
So this is NOT happening every single time. Now I have seen Microsoft KB - 307864 and I can see that none of the databases are marked as suspect, the database I am trying to connect to does exist and is attached and, I have run the command to switch the database to multi-user mode.
The probable cause of this problem is that a while ago we had a hard-drive failure and I was forced to reattach some old datafiles (mdf,ldf) as the database. This seemed ok and I can view data etc in enterprise manager no problem.
I have checked for orphaned users and the user I am logging in with from the webpage is not listed.
So does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening, and more frustratingly for me, why is it only happening some of the time.
Thanks for your help, appreciated.
James.

I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.

I have a sql server project where I have added 1 stored procedure (named StoredProcedure1) and 1 class (named MyClass). MyClass has two functions Func1() and Func2(). The stored procedure simply instantiates MyClass and calls Func1().
Func1() creates a SqlConnection object using "context connection=true" - opens the connection and then calls Func2(). Func2() also creates a SqlConnection object using "context connection=true" - and attempts to open the connection. However when attempting to the Open() call inside Func2(), the code just exits. What gives? The code is pasted below, thanks!
*******THE STORED PROCEDURE**************
using System;
using System.Data;
using System.Data.SqlClient;
using System.Data.SqlTypes;
using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server;
using SqlServerProject1;
public partial class StoredProcedures
{
[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]
public static void StoredProcedure1()
{
// Put your code here
MyClass obj = new MyClass();
obj.Func1();
obj = null;
}
};
*******THE CLASS "MYCLASS"**************
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Text;
using System.Data;
using System.Data.SqlClient;
using System.Data.SqlTypes;
using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server;
public class MyClass
{
public MyClass()
{
}
public void Func1()
{
using ( SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("context connection=true") )
{
conn.Open();
Func2();
conn.Close();
}
}
public void Func2()
{
using ( SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("context connection=true") )
{
if ( conn.State != ConnectionState.Open )
conn.Open();
if ( conn.State == ConnectionState.Open )
conn.Close();
}
}
}

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.

If I was asked "How many days passed" the query is (below) and the answer is 33. But, then the curve ball is "can you subtract out the weekends?" and I said....well, I said I think so, but not sure how. So far, I have had no luck. Any advise?

I am looking to create a query to select data to accomodate the weekend. For example, If today is Monday, then select Friday's records. This only has to be done for Monday's. For each additional day there would be a date difference of just 1 not 3. I hard code the date diff when Monday rolls around. how to make that specific so the CT.workeddate = what I have in my Where clause.
SELECT CT.ContactId, CT.OutreachId, CT.SchedulerId, CT.WorkedDate, CT.OutreachStatusId, CT.UpdateBy, C.CampaignID, C.PlanID, C.ProgramId, M.MarketID,
M.MarketStateName, CT.AppDate, DATENAME(dw, CT.WorkedDate) AS DayofWeek, DATEADD(Day, CASE DATENAME(WEEKDAY, GETDATE())
[code]....

All,To make a long story short, we are swapping out the "knock-off" drivesthat the NA purchased on E-Bay in one of our production SQL Servers(SQL Server 2000 Enterprise) this weekend for brand new ones (Compaq15K RPM 32GB drives). We are currently experiencing ASR almost on adaily basis and it is really causing a disription in service. SO, TheNetwork Admin ahs made this decison to replace these drives in attemptto solve this. These new drives will be imaged with ALL of the currentdata on the "knock-off' drives and will be plugged back in to thisdatabase server and brought back up .This Server also happens tocurrently be a subscriber in Merge Replication as well. Besidesstopping replication to this subscriber is there any other tasks thatI need to do or concerns that I need to be knowledgable about or lookfor when we bring this database server backup on line this weekend?Thanks Travis. :)

Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.
I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.
1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site
2. I added a web part manager
3. I added a web part zone
I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.
I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.
The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).
I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.
What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.
I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?
If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.

I work with Microsoft visual studio 2005.
i get data from a table by ADO.NET :
SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection(strConnectionString);
sqlConn.Open();
.....
it works fine.
but when i open the SQL Server 2005 express edition and connect to the server (inside the same computer) and run the code again ,the Open() function fails with the exception :
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
disconnecting the server doesn't help and even closing the SQL Server 2005 application doesn't help.
Only restarting the computer enables the Open() command to work again.
Why ?

hi everyone,
A couple of issues.
1)I usually connect to my remote server via TS using a specific login (it belong to Admins) and through that user I open my SSIS projects (30 packages). Now, I have a new user and the same operation take a long time and I don't know why (same permissions) the reasons for this big delay.
2)When I'm gonna to press "Delete all Breakpoints" from Debug menu BIDS is closed. Previously appears a Microsoft dialog (Microsoft has encountered an error...) asking if you inform or not of these errors.
Thanks in advance and regards,

My issues are:
1. Avoid the "division by zero" error. This can occur if a school is closed for a day or if a smaller school has no absences for a day.

Hi,
I'm getting this error ever since I attached my VWD Express database to SQL Server Express. I detached the database after using it and closed SQL Server but as soon as I tried to run my application again in VWD I got...
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'xxxxxxxASPNET'.
I have tried attaching and detaching the database again in SQL Server with the 'Close Connections' check box ticked but still no joy. I have checked out all other posts on this subject but can't seem to find an answer that works for me.
Does SQL Server Express do something to users / permissions when attaching databases? It's all way above my head!
My connection string is as follows...
<add name="DatabaseConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
