Hi, I am new to ASP.NET and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, which I run on Windows Vista. I am currently going through some of the tutorial videos on http://www.asp.net/learn/videos/ . I encountered an error in Lesson 04 and I would have ignored it but it keeps haunting me and now I cannot proceed with the lesson 09 all because of the same error. I would really appreciate it if somebody could help me resolve this because it.
General error text
The database filename can not contain the following 3 characters: [ (open square brace), ] (close square brace) and ' (single quote)
Lesson 4 circumstances
Web.Configis modified to contain the following code just before the closing </system.web> tag:<anonymousIdentification enabled="true"/><profile enabled="true"> <properties> <add name="MyNewProperty" allowAnonymous="true"/> </properties></profile>

I have a problem setting the default value of a column. I am trying to set it to
(CONVERT([float],getdate()+(2),0))
However, SQL Server automatically sets it to
(CONVERT([float],getdate()+(2),(0)))
While it functionally does not change anything, we have a tool which compares the database schema against a pre-existing schema and shows this as an error.I have tried setting the value directly and through scripts but it does not work either way.

I can't understand why I get 2 different results on running with a Bracket I get 'NULL' and without a bracket I get the declared variable value which is 'Noname'
Below is Query 1:
Declare @testvar char(20)
Set @testvar = 'noname'
Select @testvar= pub_name
FROM publishers
WHERE pub_id= '999'
Select @testvar
Out put of this query is 'Noname'
BUT when I type the same query in the following manner I get Null-------Please note that the only difference between this query below is I used brackets and Select in the Select@testvar statement
Declare @testvar char(20)
Set @testvar = 'noname'
Select @testvar=(Select pub_name
FROM publishers
WHERE pub_id= '999')
Select @testvar

Please write to me any solutions u are having.

I have an ASP.NET application where I need to filter the records returned from a SQL query using a calculated distance to a point that is set by the user. To do this directly, I would need to include a square root of an expression in the SQL query. It seems like I should be able to do this by writing my SQL query something like:
SELECT SQRT(expression ....) AS distance, column2, column3 ... FROM mytable WHERE distance < 50
Unfortunately, SQL queries apparently don't like the SQRT function. I am using .NET 2.0 with VS2005 and a MS Access backend (that will soon be moved to SQL/Server).
As an alternate, maybe I can query the data into a temporary record set with a extra field for distance and then step my way through the temporary record set and replace the values in the distance field with a calculated distance. Once the temporary record set is prepared, then I would delete the records that don't pass the distance requirement or otherwise hide them and bind the data to a gridview control.
Thanks,
David

I am using the following statement but seem to be getting a Syntax Error. I think this is something to do witt the fact that I don't have brackets around the values. However, no matter where I try to put the brackets I seem to get an error!
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jon

I had to import some FileMaker Data into SQL Server 2005 and in the resume field a "SQUARE" special character is appearing everyplace that a return should be.
It has really messed up the formatting. I know how to use the updatetext in a cursor to replace the special character but I don't know what to replace the "SQUARE" special character with so the text is displaying a new line rather then this "SQUARE" character.
Any help would be appreicated.

I am using Enterprise Manager to create database tables. In the table design view I am trying to create a column called, section. After typing, section, Enterprise Manager automatically puts brackets around the name, ex. [section]. When I view the table by returning all rows the brackets are gone. However, when I go back to desing view the brackets are there. Why is this happening and what affect does it have on my database?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi All,I was hoping someone has experienced this before, I'm having troublegoogling this. I'm working with a poorly writtend database that has somefields named as such: MTIC_PROD_VEND[ 1]I do not have the option to rename this field but I do need to retreive datafrom it with SQL. I've tried a suggestion of [MTIC_PROD_VEND[ 1]]] and thatdoesn't seem to work, it may be because the 1 has a space leading it. Doesanyone happen to have any suggestion to try to work around this? Anyassistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Regards,Stephan

I'm trying to run a SELECT statement to get two different values from a field that looks like this:
"Sample text [123], Sample text 2 [345]"
The two values I'm trying to grab has to be after the last comma. So in this case, I need to get
Value 1: 345
Value 2: Sample text 2
Is this possible to do? I can't create functions to accomplish this.

Bracketology, Playoff Bracket, Single Elimination Tournament, whatever you want to call it.
I need the solution to be able to support all sizes of brackets (from 8 - 64 teams and everything in between).

Hi,
On x64 versions of Windows server 2003, there is a folder called "Program Files (x86)". The use of parenthesis in this name has caused a few issues so far, particularly with connecting SQL Server 2005 to Oracle using SSIS. After several hours of searching I realized that the parenthesis was causing it, and eventually I found that the best way is to avoid creating such a name while installing the OS itself, by using winnt.sif. This would be better than renaming it and changing registry entries after the installation is done.
I realize this may not be the best question to ask of Microsoft, but why not just call it "Program Filesx86" by default so no special procedure has to be done to get around these issues? The use of parenthesis is likely to cause even more compatibility issues with other software later?
BTW I use Microsoft products regularly and love most of them

I am using a SQL command in ASP.NET to send a query to a an OLAP cube that returns a dynamic set of data that I load into a datatable and then bind to a GridView. I have made my own ITemplate implementaton for displaying and formatting the data, and the following line is causing me problems:
RawValue = DataBinder.Eval(row.DataItem, "[Month].[Month].[MEMBER_CAPTION]")
The error returned is:
Month is neither a DataColumn nor a DataRelation for table
My guess as to what is happening is that it sees the brackets in the field name and stops reading the field name at [Month], when the actual field name is much longer. I know that it knows about the column name because it displays it correctly in the header. Since I am loading this from an OLAP cube the names of my columns vary based on the criteria so I cannot alias the column because I don't know exactly which columns will be displayed. Does anyone know how I might get the DataBinder.Eval function to work with fields that contain square brackets [ and ] ?
If I use the GridView's "auto-generate fields" option it will show the data (and this is the column name) but I lose all control over formatting and the other custom code I'm writing in my ITemplate interface.
Thanks

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

When I proposed start to use SQL Server 2005 for new VS 2005 web sites, one of my co-workers responded that
we will update the old SQL Server 2000 databases to SQL Server 2005 when we are ready to use 2005 SQL Server.
Questions:
1. Any expected problems to upgrade old 2000 databases to new 2005 SQL Server?
2. I have installed both 2005/Management Studio Express and 2000/Enterprise Manager in my PC. Any expected
problems when running both 2000 and 2005 SQL Server at the same database server?
3. What is the best configuration for running SQL Server 2005 when we have old 2000 databases? Upgade or not upgrade?
TIA,
Jeffrey

Hi,
I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Oran

if you can restore a database to Server B using Server A as the service. Meaning we would issue the command on Server A but somehow point to Server B as where we want the restore to happen.
The backup file would be in a location independent of both servers.
