Srvr Permissions: Public Gone, Need It Back!
Jun 3, 2008
Hi all,
Hope someone can help: by default, there's an entry for 'public' in server permissions (right-click server in Management Studio > Properties > Permissions), which has 1 selection: 'View All Databases' is set to 'grant'. I wanted to disable this permission, and so unfortunately unchecked the 'grant' tickbox but forgot to tick the 'deny' tickbox. What appears to have happened is the entire 'public' entry has been removed, meaning I can't go back and reselect 'grant' (or 'deny') for 'View All Databases'. I'd really like to get the 'public' role to reappear... Is that possible?
A very big thanks for any help!

I have a db that I use as the backend to an Access application. The application looks at 2 databases that are on the clinet machine. A db from a vendor and my new database. I can read the vendor db (with the proper dns), but I can only read my db when the user has admin privileges. I have granted the public all permissions for the table on my db. What am I missing?
Also, this is a db on a Small business Server 2003 so all of the SQL tools do not appear to be there.
TIA

Every night, there are some stored procedures that run to recreate tables so that the information in the table is updated. After the tables are droped and recreated I have to go in and check the select box under the permissions for the public role. If i don't do this users will not be able to select from theres tables.
What can I do so that users are able to select from these tables after they are created?
Would you be able to specify the select permissions for the public role in the script that creates the table or run a script that gives all those tables select permissions for the public role?
All help is appreciated.

I am working with a SQLServer installation where all public permissionshave been revoked from the system.I currently hold the securityadmin and sysadmin roles to perform mylogicall access control work (creating logins and adding users todatabases and changing group memberships.)There has been a question as to whether or not I need the sysadmin roleto do my job, so we tried an experiment in dropping the sysadmin rolefrom my id.With no public permissions, I see no user information on the server,which really limits my ability to do the job.Has anyone ever worked with a super-locked-down server without thesysadmin role for doing security admin work?What I'm looking for is hopefully SQL to perform the access privilegesneeded for the security admin role by itself.Thanks in advance!

Hi!
I have tried installing SQL Server 7.0 on my Win 98 machine. My machine has all the latest service packs and I think it is reasonably up to date. I've tried installing from the disc 3 times and it fails to install:
the Server Network Utility and Service Manager.
As a result, I am unable to register my local machine as a SQL server.
Any ways around this? Quick fixes?
Thanks!

Our network people changed our machine name one character without our permission, they say their naming standards can't handle an "underscore" we put in our name...now the SQL Server won't run because it doesn't recognize the name of the machine.
Is there a way of bypassing or telling SQL server that we changed the name without having to reload all of our information?

Dear all,
We've a denormalised database (SQL Server 05) with around half a million rows, feeding a fairly simple Analysis Services cube. We were hoping to use the Excel 07 DM add-in as a user-friendly interface to lots of people, but as far as I can tell we need to first import the data into an Excel 07 worksheet. I realise 2007 has a 1mn limit, but the rows are wide, downloading GBs is not possible, and I have concerns about Excel performance and reliability at these volumes, especially on a desktop.
Is there any way to use the data mining functionality without having the data in Excel?
If not, what would be the simplest/quickest/cheapest way of providing this functionality (or subsets of it) to people who know Excel but not data mining?
Thanks for any guidance or corrections,
Chris
PS. Would downloading subsets of the data work, along the lines of the article entitled Sampling Nested Tables ( http://www.sqlserverdatamining.com/ssdm/Default.aspx?tabid=102&Id=14 )?

Hi,
I have just started to learn SQL Server 2005, and am currently using the MCTS SQL Server 2005 Self-Paced Training Kit. I am literally at the very start, and already seem to have hit a snag and can't figure it out. From browsing here in the past I recall people here seemed quite clued up, and I was hoping someone might be able to assist.
I am using SQL Server 2005 Ent. Edtn. (trial) on Win XP Pro (SP2). I am basically trying to run a sample script copied from book to create a database and primary, secondary and log files. Whilst I have the theory down, and thought I understood the SQL (have used other DBMSs in the past, MySQL/ACCESS etc.) I am getting an error when trying to run the following code when connected to the default instance on my PC. The code I am trying to run is:
create database Sales
ON
primary
(name = SalesPrimary,
filename = E:Sales_DataSalesPrimary.mdf,
size = 50mb,
MAXSIZE = 200,
filegrowth = 20),
Filegroup SalesFG
( name = SalesData1,
filename = F:Sales_DataSalesData1.ndf,
size = 200mb,
maxsize = 800,
filegrowth = 100),
( name = SalesData2,
Filename = F:Sales_DataSalesData2.ndf,
Size = 400mb,
Maxsize = 1200,
Filegrowth = 300),
Filegroup SalesHistoryFG
( name = SalesHistory1,
filename = F:Sales_DataSalesHistory1.ndf,
size = 100mb,
maxsize = 500,
filegrowth = 50)
LOG ON
(name = Archlog1,
Filename = G:Sales_DataSalesLog.ldf,
size = 300mb,
maxsize = 800,
filegrowth = 100)
I find I get the following error message:
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Incorrect syntax near 'E'.
Msg 132, Level 15, State 1, Line 16
The label 'F' has already been declared. Label names must be unique within a query batch or stored procedure.
Msg 132, Level 15, State 1, Line 22
The label 'F' has already been declared. Label names must be unique within a query batch or stored procedure.
Anyone have any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

Hello,I'm trying to create a simple back up in the SQL Maintenance Plan that willmake a single back up copy of all database every night at 10 pm. I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Is there any way to create a back up file withoutthe date time stamp so it overwrites the previous nights file?Thanks!Rick

New to Database Mirroring and I have a question about the Principal database server. I have a Database Mirroring setup configured for High-safety with automatic fail over mode using a witness.
When a fail over occurs because of a lost of communication between the principal and mirror, the mirror server takes on the roll of Principal. When communication is returned to the Principal server, at some point does the database that was the previous Principal database automatically go back to being the Principal server?

Hello,I am hoping you can help me with the following problem; I need to process the following steps every couple of hours in order to keep our Sql 2000 database a small as possible (the transaction log is 5x bigger than the db).1.back-up the entire database2.truncate the log3.shrink the log4.back-up once again.As you may have determined, I am relatively new to managing a sql server database and while I have found multiple articles online about the topics I need to accomplish, I cannot find any actual examples that explain where I input the coded used to accomplish the above-mentioned steps. I do understand the theory behind the steps I just do not know how to accomplish them!If you know of a well-documented tutorial, please point me in the right direction.Regards.

Does anybody know of a way to rollback SQL Server 2005
databases back to SQL Server 2000? Is there a way of doing it without
resorting to Copy Database Wizard? I love to find a way of attaching a SS 2005 database
to a SS 2000 instance without any issues.
I recently upgraded to SS 2005 and I am very unhappy with the SS 2005 and I
want to rollback to SS 2000, which was a lot more stable. I am having
several major issues that are affecting my whole company's day-to-day
operations and the managers are not happy. Some of the issues include
night time batch running very sluggish for no apparent reason. This is a
biggest problem because it only occurs once or so a week and causes a disturbance
with the daily activities when the night time processing isn€™t completed on
time. The rest of the time, the batch processing runs great, even a little better then on SS 2000. I
don't believe it is a matter of my application needing to be retuned because if
that was the case, then why isn't it running sluggish every night? Also,
it's never the same day that the sluggish behavior occurs. If it was occurring
on the same night, then I would have something to investigate within our
application, but it doesn't. Another issue that I am having involves a
night time job that restores a copy of the production database to the Data
Warehouse server to be used for updating the data warehouse. Again, most
of the time it runs great (~2 1/2 hours), but once or twice a week, it goes
stupid and takes 6 1/2 hours for no apparent reason. Again, it is not happening
the same day either, which could give me something to invesigate. On SS 2000, this same job ran flawlessly. Never I did I run into situation that the
database restoration took that long to run. Even another issue involves a SQL Server Agent Job that was put into suspended
state. What's a suspended state and how can I get it out of suspended
state? I can find no information about suspended state in BOL. I
did a Google and nothing came up. If this suspended state was put
in for security reasons, great, but then tell me how I can remove the suspended
state. I am also not happy with the
fact that I can't get accurate information about the queries that are actively
running at that particular moment. In SS 2000, when I noticed high CPU
usage on the server, I would run the sp_who2 active stored proc and it would
show me all the active thread and how much CPU it was consuming. I would
then find the running threads with the highest CPU numbers and investigate the
query and see if we could improve it. Now in SS 2005, I get in the same
situation and run the sp_who2 stored proc, and there is no smoking gun.
All of the active threads are showing very little CPU usage, which I am very
suspect of. What the heck happen to sp_who2? I looked at some of
the other ways of looking at running processes (i.e... sys.sysprocesses) and
they don't appear to be giving the information that I need.
I am very unhappy and I just want to roll back to SS 2000 and wait a couple of
years before I upgrade to SS 2005.

Using SQL Server 2k5 sp1, Is there a way to deny users access to a specific column in a table and deny that same column to all stored procedures and views that use that column? I have a password field in a database in which I do not want anyone to have select permissions on (except one user). I denied access in the table itself, however the views still allow for the user to select that password. I know I can go through and set this on a view by view basis, but I am looking for something a little more global.

Is there a way to make a report public, to outside your domain users? We have a web application the users are authenticated in that is not in .NET and not using NT authentication and we want to have a report linked from inside the application that will pass the parameters in the URL. This is not very sensitive data and the report is using SQL authentication. We also don't want then to log in a second time for the report.
Can this be done easily?
Thanks

Whenever I access reports from MS CRM with internal IP i.e http://192.168.100.55:5555 within my network every default as well custom reports are working fine.
But the same when I access with Public IP i.e. http://209.199.X.X:5555 I am able to see the application in public i.p but the reports are not working.

For example:
Declare @Month as int
Set @Month = case when month(getdate()) = 1 then 9 else month(getdate()) - 3
When I do this, I get an error message, 'The declare cursor SQL construct or statement is not supported.'
So how do i properly declare a variable that can be used through all my dataset?
