Standard Edition Fails To Install, Express Edition Fails To Uninstall
May 8, 2008
We are trying to install the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005. We already have SQL Express installed. Standard won't install and Express won't uninstall.
We have tried every suggestion we can find and some we made up. When we try to install Standard, we get to the bit where you choose what you want to install and the only thing available is workstation components.
There are so many cases of this on the Internat that I can't believe MS have not solved the issue. And I am stunned that they want to charge us more money to talk to us about how to fix something we just paid them an arm and a leg for!
What do I need to tell you to get some idea of where to go next with this?
I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 onto Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition. Previously SQL Server 2000 from the SBE disk was installed, automatic updates are enabled.
I have selected the default instance and everything I try results in the error:
An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. To proceed with SQL Server Setup, provide a unique instance name.
Log file says;

When trying to install SQL 2005, I keep getting the foll. error:
Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or CD-Rom drive. For other potential soltions to this problem, see C:Program ....1033setup.chm
I have tried using two different DVDs, and also downloaded SQL 2005 from msdn, but none of them work.
I cant figure out why this is happening.. its a fresh 2003 x64 R2 sp2 server, during the installation of the SQL Server Database Services the server hangs and displays Setting File Security. I let the install run for over 45 mins and it still hangs... the log file is useless.. i cant find any clues as to why ...
I'm not sure if this is correct but this installs all the components properly except "Microsoft SQL Server 2005". Actually I didn''t know how to install SQL to run the services with Syatem account. I read through some forums and found that I should use domain account for this purpose. If I dont give any account details Installation will fail saying the account details for service are not specified.
I thought of running the installation with any domain account and then use a script to chage the sevice to run with system account so that user can use it.
I have the log file but its a 12 mb file. I couldn't find an option to install attach the file.
I am trying to install the workgroup edition on Windows SBS 2003 R2. After the removal of an unwanted SQL Express Edition installation - the standard install of SQL 2005 from CD hangs during setup.

We have replication setup on a sql server 2000. We encountered issue that the distribution agent goes down (distrib.exe stop running) in the event of network connection broken. We would like to know:
is this the expected result that the distribution agent will go down in the event of communication failure between the distribution server and subscriber server? if not, is there a way to programmatically control and restart the agent? Is there any sp in SQL server which can monitor the replication communication error message? is there any sp in SQL server which can be run to restart the agent? For the best practice, what do you think we can do to achieve an €˜event-driven€™ kind of mechanism so when an communication breaks, the agent can be restarted by the triggered event (or at least a simple way to automatically restart)?
I have installed SQL standard Edition in my computer for one project. We want to kick off a new project, and intend to use SQL Express, Will anybody advise me whether I can install SQL express when SQL Standard Edition is there? or I need to remove SQL standard Edition first and install SQL express?
Hello!M a newbie.. I just want to know, that wots the difference b/w SQL Server Standard Edition and Express Edition.?And can I use Visual Studio 2005 (Professional Edition) with SQL Server Express Edition.?
If I search for updates with Microsoft or Windows Update it notifies me to upgrade SQL Server Express to SP2. After the download the installation fails. The reason seems to be that Microsoft Update downloads SP2 with the wrong language:

I Try to install SQL Server Express in Windows 2003 Standard edition x64 and have some problems.
It say that can not instal client and say to use sqlncli_x64.msi, but I can not find this packege to install this client and I receive one alert with ASP.NET register 64.
I Check all request systems requirements many times and looks ok.
How can I solve this to install properly the SQL 2005 Express? When the setup finish say that was not possiblem to install SQL Server 2005 Express.
From the Windows update site and also via automatic download of updates, the following update fails every time...The SQL it is trying to update works fine. The following updates were not installed: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)
I know people have put up this question before but I wanted some updated feedback. I just bought Visual Studio Tools for MS Office and it comes with SQL Developer Edition. I am currently using VS.net 2003 and using MSDE with MS SQL Web Data Administrator to build my dbs then export the sql script. I was wondering if I should uninstall the MSDE and install the DEv Ed so I can develop all the triggers, constraints etc through Enterprise Manager, therefore having a better setup DB. I know you can do all that through code but why reinvent the wheel. One last question, with the Dev Ed you just export the schema and scripts to a machine with SQL Server installed once the DB is ready for deployment ? Is this correct? I lied one more question, does the uninstall of MSDE leave much of a mess, what is the best way to get rid of it. Thanks in advance Pete
I am trying to uninstall SQLExpress from a win2k3SP1 server but it keeps on failing with, "Unable to write to directory ...MSSQLData.", while trying to remove the data files. I am a local admin on the box so there should be no problem with my permissions, right?
I have written a custom executable thats purpose is to find and uninstall a named instance. It works as intended on PC's running XP and Vista with UAC turned off. However when I try to run the exe on a Vista Machine with UAC on, it does not fully remove the named instance.
It leaves behind in the folder path: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQL" three folders: "Data", "LOG", and "Template Data". However it does remove all of the registry entries and all of the services attached to that named instance.
Why oh why does it have permission to remove everything else besides these 3 folders, and how (programmatically) can I give it the proper admin rights?
the code that does all the work from the cmd:
msiexec /x "ProductCode" /passive
The removal of these three folders is important b/c when you try to reinstall the namedinstance it gives an error message saying files already exist inside the "Data" Folder.
HI, My computer keeps trying to download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 and fails with the error code 0x2B22. It is a new computer running with Windows XP Pro.
I have spent hours searching the forums and the internet, but I can't find anything to help, or I don't understand the solutions or whether they relate to my computer. I don't know how to find out why the update is failing either.
While installing VS 2008, I chose the full install and it installed SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Since I do have a full version of SQL Server running on this machine, I would like to uninstall the Express edition. But I do not see the application listed in the Add/Remove Programs.
I have been trying to uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for a day and a half to no avail. I have cleaned it out of the registry, and I have done everything possible to get rid of this, er, Microsoft virus software. I have erased every folder that has any SQL Server name after I stopped all SQL server services in the task list. All I want to do is install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition so that I can use the BI Manager to create a DTS package. Does anyone have any utilities that might help?
I got a problem in my development phase. I'm developing a web-application system that running merge database technology which is centralized database and distributed database. This is because my customer want a highly optimum system standby.
My centralized database running SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and the distributed database running SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (because it is free). Each of these database, the users can change the data on its database. So, every database must have the same data. from my understanding, each server must act as Publisher and Subscriber. Can SQL Server 2005 Express Edition be a Publisher?
If not, what the solution you all may suggest, because cost is the first factor. If my architecture is not correct, so what you all suggest to me to resolve the problem.
Thanks so much. Any suggestion and opinion is highly appreciate and I'm highly thanks to you all.
I am getting the following error while attempting to install the Workstation components on my SQL2005 Standard Server.
To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.
I know the problem is related to a previous installation of Enterprise Edition on the same server. I have tried deleting all SQL files, and registry keys yet I am still getting the same error.
I ve been coping with the follwing Error for 2 months , and i desperately need sb helping me out with a practical solution. the error has become a real pain in the neck 4 me .I want to install SQL 2005 standard edition on a vista ultimate however the error appears at almost the end of installation proceess .and the sql server database services fails to be installed on vista????? and doesnt get a check mark. this is the Error:
sQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Windows NT user or group 'computer-nameSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$computer-name$MSSQLSERVER' not found. Check the name again..
I am planning to work with replication topic and i have a problem with it.
I have installed a SQL server 2005 standard edition. When i try creating a new publication it comes out with this error
"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is unable to access replication components because replication is not installed on this instance of sql server.
for information about installing replication, see installing replication in sql server books online
Additional information: Execute permission denied on object 'sp_MS_replication_installed",database'master',owner'dbo'. (Microsoft SQL server ,Error:229)
I have tried inserting the CD and reinstalling it.but didnt work.
When i tried to Remove sql server from control panel add/remove programs it shows me the following components to be deleted.but then even after restarting my machine i find everything in start->all programs.
Hi -I have istalled sql server 2005 standard edition , I want to install sql server 2005 enterprise edition on the same machine. Is it possible? I have Microsoft windows server 2003 SP2 and 1GB RAM. I want to use partition function with the enterprise edition, will the trial version of sql server work for me? -If I have already created a database and tables using the standard edition, will I be able to access and use the database using the installed trial version or will I have to start a fresh creating a new database? - Is it possible to access the same database with any of the installed versions?
BTW, I am prety new to sql server and databases , I am trying to learn by myself
Dear All,We have a database which contains many tables which have millions ofrecords. When We attach the database with MS SQL Server 2005 StandardEdition Server and run some queries (having joins, filters etc.) thenthey take very long time to execute while when We execute same querieson Enterprise Edition then they run 10 times faster than on standardedition. Our database does not use any features which are present in EnterpriseEdition and not present in Standard Edition. We want to know what arethe differences between Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition forperformance. Why should we go for Enterprise Edition when StandardEdition has all the features required. We are presently using evaluation versions of SQL Server 2005 Standardand Enterprise Editions. Thanks and regards,Nishant Sainihttp://www.simplyjava.com
I am attempting to upgrade a 2005 Standard Edtion to Enterprise Edition. This is a default instance. All components are upgraded successfully except the Database Engine. I receive the following error:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
This installation does not have encryption enabled, so I do not undersand the error or how to correct it.
After rebooting the SQL instance appears to be upgraded to Enterprise, but it cannot be upgraded to SP2.
Hi all--I'm researching the cleanest downgrade path from a trial edition of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise to a licensed Standard Edition copy. It looks like downgrading will entail uninstalling the old version and installing the new version, but I'd like to save the original setup as much as possible. Detaching the old databases will preserve the non-system databases; what method would work best for restoring the system databases?
The enterprise edition of SQL server includes some advanced BI features, for example the fuzzy lookup feature of IS. If the IS package lives on an enterprise edition of SQL server and the database the package it is targeting lives on a standard edition of SQL server can the advanced features be used? Can you run a fuzzy look against a database on a standard edition of SQL server when th IS package lives on an enterprise edition of SQL server? THANKS!
I have recently upgraded a SQL x64 server from Developer Edition to Standard Edition, This succeeded without issue. Following a reboot SQL Server yielded the following message
Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with unable to load SQLBoot.DLL. Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this issue.
I'm installing SQL 2005 Developer Edition, instalation always fails with the error "Could not find a package to install on the installation media". The summary.txt is pasted bellow:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06 ============================== OS Version : Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Time : Mon Nov 05 10:47:30 2007
IA-PJPATRICIO : Could not find a package to install on the installation media.
SQL Server Setup failed. For more information, review the Setup log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt.
I have an instance of SQL 2000 installed on the same machine, i'm trying to install Analises Services 2005 only, but instalation fails with any of the SQL Server 2005 components.
I have a SQL Server 2005 (build 9.0.3050) database with tables belonging to different schemas. I am in the process of developing a Windows Mobile 5.0 application that will work against this database, and I€™m planning to use Remote Data Access with SQL Server 2005 CE to synch data.
I have my RDA all set up and working correctly IIS-wise, and have no problem pulling a table from my database. However, when I attempt to push a modified table back to the database, I get an €˜Internal error: Failure setting up bindings, possibly caused by insufficient permissions.€™ error (which equates to error 28621: SSCE_M_BINDINGS), which according to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172898.aspx is an internal error which €œcannot be resolved by common troubleshooting techniques€?. The €˜insufficient permissions€™ is a red herring I think, since the problem persists even if the SQL Server login that is being used for RDA is in the sysadmin role.
I€™ve attempted to identify the problem by starting from scratch with a new database and a new table with a couple of test columns. With the table freshly created as dbo.TableName RDA works fine. However, when I create a schema and transfer the table to the schema, RDA push fails as above, so to me it looks like the schema is causing the problem.
Anyone any ideas about this? All help greatly appreciated!
When I try to install SQL Server 2005 evaluation edition, I keep getting the message that SQL server setup has detected beta components of SQL Server 2005 or Visual Studio 2005 which must be uninstalled for setup to continue. I have removed all beta components like sql 2005 ctp, visual studio 2005 beta, etc from my computer and yet it keeps giving me this message.
PLease help!!!! I am unable to install SQL Server 2005 evaluation edition.
