I am using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on a fully patched Windows 2000 Server, and for some reason the database just will not start up when the machine starts or reboots. The service starts fine if I go start it by hand though. This is obnoxious because it prevents me from running fully automated updates to the box since that reboots it at least once a week on "patch Tuesday".
Here are what my related services and their startup types look like:
SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Automatic SQL Server Active Directory Helper Disabled SQL Server Browser Disabled SQL Server VSS Writer Manual
This is a production machine so I'd prefer not to run any services I don't have to. All this database needs to do is sit there and get hit by a local Cold Fusion instance that talks to it by TCP/IP. Any administration on it I tend to do locally with Management Studio Express by remotely logging into the server on it's internal IP.
The really weird thing is, I have these services configured exactly the same on development environments I've created in Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. This seems to be specific to Windows 2000 Server, and I just can't figure it out...
My SQL2K was running fine. Yesterday, I decided to install SP3a. During the installation, it failed when apply sp3_serv_repl.sql. And I can't start SQL server anymore. The error is :
FRunCM : Process <> generated Fatal Exception C0000005 Exception Access Violation - SQLServer is terminating this process.
No matter what I did, I couldn't start the service again. SO I decided to uninstall SQL2K and install again. Installation is ok, no problem. But, again the SQLServer service cannot start up. The same error appeared. Besides, there is also the error about :
Supersocket Error 1355.
I have tried all the suggestions that I can find in the net but nothing seems to work.
Please advise what should I do. Thank you very much.
The log for our SQL 2000 database shows constant "starting up database dbname" entires. Is there a option that causes the databases to constantly be starting or is this a new feature of SQL 2000.

I have a pc running as an SQL Server 2005 express server. Last week, the RAID 1 array failed for some reason, both HD still work correctly and the raid utility simply mirrored everything back.
So after starting this pc the day after, SQL server stopped working. This is the error log:

I have been reading in this forum and other places, but I've had no luck fixing this. I already backed up all the mdf database files and logs just in case. The mssqlsystemresource database and logs are in the same location, and they have read/write access.
I want to start to use SQL Server 200 Express but have no idea where to enter the SQL queries and view the results.
I installed SQL Express and under Start > Programs > SQL Server 2005 I only have Configuration Tools which has Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and Surface Area Configuration.
SQL Server and SQL Server Browser Services are running but I have no clue of from to start creating my database, tables, etc etc.
I have a background of MySQL and used MySQL's command line tool and phpMyAdmin, so SQL is not a problem.
When our rep distribution services time-out (several times a day) some dba's just restart the service while others restart the rep job which starts the service. Are there any differences between these two methods? Does restarting the service inherit any changes made to the job's attributes?
I am running windows 2003 and sql server 2005. i am following the directions in books online:
On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
In SQL Server Configuration Manager, expand Services, and then click SQL Agent.
In the results pane, right-click any instance, and then click Start.
A green arrow on the icon next to the SQL Server Agent and on the toolbar indicates that SQL Server Agent started successfully.
Click OK.
the problem is i have nothing in Services. there is nothing to expand. is it installed wrong?? or is there another step before this that i have to do??
I installed SQL Server 2005 a while back and just tried to use the ReportServer recently and ran into a problem.
I tried accessing using http://babby/ReportServer (my report server and db server are both on 'babby') and got an ASP.NET runtime error (which wasn't displayed to me). So next I accessed locally at the server (babby) and got this error:
The current identity (NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE) does not have write access to 'C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files'.
I have done some searching on the Internet and there doesn't seem to be much info at all about SSRS 2005. I did found some MSDN info that suggested that NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE is the correct account to use when running SSRS under Win Server 2003 which I am.
'babby' is a Windows Server 2003 machine running IIS 6.0.
Hi! I am absolutely new in SQL! Pls help me answering some questions! I have Microsoft VB Express Edition 2005. So I created my Database1 and my own table Table1 ( by Add Item). 1)Now in "Show SQL Pane" I write my query. When I write it with error - it is deleting (after Execute or Verify). So I must write it again! How can I save my query (error query!) for not writing it again?
2) After several tries I succeed to write query without mistake. So I have a result ( Table2). Then I write another query and have Table3. How can I see my Table2 and IT'S QUERY??? Is there is a log option that can write all my queries and under every query - the result table in my session?
Thank u ! PS. Does Microsoft VB Express Edition 2005 contain SQL Server Management Studio?

We have windows server 2000 and sql server 2005 on the same machine with 15 clients. There was a power failure. The sql server is automatically stopped. When we tried to start the service we are getting the error as action failed please check application event log for errors.
This has happened for the 2 times, kindly tell me why this happens and what precaution we can take and is there any setting we are missing. Since I am newbie to sql server and windows server I am unable to solve this problem.

I've been dealing with a few problems with SQL Server 2005.
We don't want to give our DBA's local administrator access to the servers so we had a problem with SSIS which I managed to resolve by adding their global group into the local DCOm group and modifying the security properties of MsDtsServer.
Another problem I've come across is when you log into Management Studio as an account that has local administrator access to the server you have the Green symbol next to the registered server, you can then right click and Stop, Restart services etc.
If I log into Management Studio with an account that has full SQL sysadmin rights but not local administrator rights to the server then the Green symbol doesn't appear and the Stop, restart options are all greyed out - all other functionality appears okay, they just seem to lose the ability to remotely stop and start services.
All of the above is with Windows Firewall turned off, if the user has local administrator rights but the SQL Server has the Windows Firewall switched on they are unable to remotely stop and restart services.
Port 1433 is open on the firewall and program execptions are there for sqlbrowse.exe
Anyone come across this particular problem before?
I have upgraded a SBS 2003 MSDE database (instance MSSQL$SHAREPOINT) to SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced Edition. This worked without a problem even when I enabled all the options for the upgrade including Full-text search.
I now want to have Full-text search on this instance of SQL 2005 with database name of STS_EVEREST_1.
I first tried to use the T-SQL command of "CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG BBVisionCatalog AS DEFAULT;" I now know that the original database was created under SQL 2000 and therefore I needed to use SQL 2000 commands. So I used the following script:
USE STS_EVEREST_1 EXEC sp_fulltext_database 'enable' EXEC sp_fulltext_catalog 'BBVisionCatalog', 'create';
It produced the following ERROR messages:
(1 row(s) affected) Msg 7609, Level 17, State 2, Procedure sp_fulltext_database, Line 46 Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be loaded.
I checked to see if the Microsoft Search Service was running. It was running.
We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?
I upgraded my SQL 2005 Workgroup 2005 to SP2 and subsequently could not get the SQL Server service running. Turns out this was a problem because I had created separate folders for my data and log files. The distmdl.mdf and mssqlsystemresource.mdf files were in my data folder and distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were in my log folder. During SP2 upgrade a new distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were created in my data folder. I deleted the distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf files in my log folder and then moved the newly created ones in my data folder into the log folder and all is well now.
I am attempting to move some SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005. My main production database does not seem to want to move. When I use the SQL 2005 GUI the .bak backup file is marked 'Incomplete'. When I attempt to restore the backup file I get a 'RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database' message. I saw a thread in the SQL Express forum suggesting trying to restore from the T-SQL level to get the GUI out of the picture and I get the same 'error on page (0:0)' message. However when I take the same file and use SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager it restores with no problems.
Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael
Hi,i have SQL 2000 and 2005 on same machine(with different intance names,of course), my laptop - XP with SP2. The 2005 works fine but i can'tconnect on SQL 2000. All the the SQL services are started.Any idea? Have i to reinstall 2000?Tks,Lourival
I have to merge the data from two databases, one is in SQL Server 2005 format, one is in 2000. The merged data will then reside on a SQL Server 2000 platform. Is there an easy way to do this through Management Studio or Enterprise Manager? Or will we have to export the data from the 2005 database to a flat file and import it into a new 2000 database. And then do the merge?
I am in the process of migrating from Sql Server 2000 to 2005. Part of my plan is to move some database's to 2005, but use the 2000 compatibility mode for the short term. My issue is this, our DR boxes are still on SQL Server 2000, would I still be able to use our log shipping processes? Or would I be better off in starting with migrating the DR boxes to 2005 first?
I have several SQL 2000 servers I need to setup transactional (non updatable) replication with. The structure is:
SQL Server 2000 as Publisher/Distributor
SQL Server 2005 Standard as Subscriber
The connection is via the Internet with snapshots using FTP.
I setup the first set (2 databases at location A). They work wonderfully. I created the publication and then subscribed using MGMT Studio for 2K5.
II am setting up the same scenario for location B. Here is my problem:
In MGMT Studio I connect to the publisher (SANDRA). I right-click a publication and choose New Subscriptions..., the publication is already selected. I click next - Run each agent at its Subscriber is selected and the only option (this is desired), I click Next
HERE IS THE PROBLEM:
On the Subscriber's screen there are no Subscribers listed. When setting up location A the subscribing server was listed and I could choose a database. The Next button is greyed out and there is no way to create/add one.
I tried setting up the subscription by right-clicking the subcribing server's Replication folder in MGMT Studio but I get the same result (except that I have to authenticate with the publishing server which works fine).
WHAT'S DIFFERENT:
Location A is SQL Server Standard (SP3) running on SBS2K3. It is obviously on a domain and so SQL Server and the SQL Agent are running under domain accounts. Location B is a Windows XP SP2 machine running SQL Server Personal Edition (it actually says Development Edition in the properties window).
The databases are the same strucutre, different data. At location A the firewall is set to allow 1433->*any* and *any*->1433 where *any* is 1024 or higher. On the XP machine the firewall is set to allow port 1433. I don't think this is the issue because I've turned the firewall off on the XP machine and I get the same result.
Most of our sql servers ar still sql 2000. Our programmers created many sql 2000 database diagrams using EM. But they can not access them under sql 2005. (They now have only sql 2005 tools installed on their boxes.)
Question: can we reinstall the sql 2000 client tools on their boxes without affecting the current sql 2005 install on their boxes?
Question: is there any workaround negating the need to ihstall the sql 2000 client?
I'm trying to connect to Desktop SQL Server 2000 from Windows mobile PC Emulator (VS 2005). I need a direct connection using connection string to SQL Server 2000 through local wireless network without IIS.
Bellow is the code that I use. After executing this code I get an error on line Conn.Open(). Error says SQL Server does not exist or access denied. SQL is un and running, and I can log in using SA username from the desktop. Even if I chance IP for another SQL server in my connection string I still get the same error. There is no firewall of any kind running.
Dim connectionSTR As String = "Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=False;Server=192.168.0.202,1433;initial catalog=MyDB;user id=sa;password=;"
Dim Conn As SqlConnection
Conn = New SqlConnection(connectionSTR)
Conn.Open()
If Conn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then MessageBox.Show("Open") End If
About my environment: SQL Server 2000 is running on Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. Application which I need to connect to SQL Server is in Visual Studio 2005. I execute the application in Windows Mobile PC Emulator and try to connect to SQL Server from emulator.
