Status Lights (Red/Stop Green/Start Yellow/Pause)

Jul 16, 1998

For some reason the status lights in my Enterprise manager are no longer working. I am connected to the databases, but because the indicator lights are not working, I can`t get a quick visual status of my servers.
Any way to get my lights back on?

Enterprise Manager - Green Light Status Not Showing Up.....

Aug 23, 1999

Has anyone had a problem with Enterprise Manager, running on NT4/SP4 desktop, not showing/reporting the status of a specified SQL Server (6.5). I have a list of 10 that have been working fine (i.e. green lights shows up, drill down and see SQL Executive Green light, etc.). I now have 1 that does not report the status. It was working fine, but the only change that I remember was to create a new Scheduling login, which I did, and then I re-registered it to use a non-sa login to see what the look/feel would be. It looked like from that point onward, is where I lost the status capability. I have re-registered it as SA, but it seems to be stuck and won't give me back the green light. Yes, the server is up and I can drill down, but I don't even see the SQL Executive service and green light. I'm sure there is some registry setting that needs to be kicked? Any Ideas?

Stop And Start SQL Services...

Jun 27, 2000

Hi friends,

I have quick question. Ihave a job which consists of 9 steps. 9th step is:
Exec xp_cmdshell 'c:mssql.bat'. in this batch file I am stopping and starting SQL services using net stop and net start command. This job is running perfectly but it is not giving the job history when I right click the job and view job history I can't see anything where as if I check the checkbox for Show step details it showing first 8 steps information but it is not showing 9th step information. Even I checked the Sysjobhistory system table in MSDB it shows only 8 steps information.
What is the reason....

Thanks,
Mohammed.

Start./stop Method

Jun 4, 2003

Hi,

New here:) and hoping someone might be able to shed a little light on a problem I am having.

I have a job scheduled, which needs to be periodically stopped and then restarted.
After looking through various places I think the start method and stop method are the best bets?
But not really sure to be honest.

Can anyone give me some tips/pointers/opinions on what would be the best way to do this. (have tried to setup a job with the said method in each step - but it doesn't like my syntax.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Profiler, Duration And Start/Stop Times

Aug 14, 2007

Profiler was run against a database looking for "long running" queries. I used the Duration column to filter out the queries that I didn't want. When reviewing the output, I noticed that for some queries the StartTime was equal to the EndTime even though the Duration was set higher.
My question is, "What can account for this discrepancy and what inferences should I draw about the difference?"
Does the difference represent a resouce being locked or some other type of blocking (Duration) and once the query was allowed to run, it completed quickly?
TIA

Service Stop/start/restart Questions 2005 SP2

Oct 15, 2007

A few service stop/start/restart questions on SQL Server 2005 SP2, whichI'll call SQLS.It looks as if there are *potentially* 6 ways to start/stop SQLSServices like the engine itself, integration services, reportingservice, Agent..-SQLS Configuration Manager-SQLS Surface Area Configuration (for Services and Connections)-Mgmt Studio Local (on server)-Mgmt Studio Remote (on client)-Windows Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services-Command Prompt (ala net start MSSQLSERVER)By policy, I am /not/ Administrator on the server. But I am SysAdminrole in SQLS. I have had various levels of success starting/stoppingservices in the ways listed above. In some I get Access denied, and inothers I get no msg and it simply doesn't work.Is there some special non-Admin OS group I need to be in to start/stopservices? Is this handled differently in the different interfaceslisted above? It seems like my best success for starting/stopping the engine and Agentis in /local/ Mgmt Studio, but /not/ remote Mgmt Studio - the optionsare greyed out on a remote client. Is this by design? Is it a SQLSbug?I'm sure I'm not the only SQLS DBA who does not have Admin rights on hisserver who wants to start/stop services. Generally speaking, how isthis intended to work?Any help appreciated.Allen JantzenA freshly minted DQLS DBA

How To Stop / Start Sql Server 2000 Using Management Studio

May 30, 2008

Hi
I have upgraded my local to sql server 2005, but still need to access the remote instance which is still at version 2008/8.0.
Enterprise Manager has been removed (by the SQL server 2005 installation)
Does anyone know how I can restart older version of SQL server instance (ie 2000/8.0) using SQL server Management Studio?

I don't have admin access on the server which the sql remote instance is hosted. Can get around it by asking the sys admin guy to do it for now but would prefer to continue to be able to do it myself.
SQL Server Configuration Manager can only manage SQL server 2005 versions - a nice little caveat!

Is there a way to stop/start remote services using 'net stop/start'? - without having to write code....
I'll continue to search for a solution, but if someon can point me in the right direction, I'd be most greatful.

Security Rights Needed To Start And Stop Services From SQL Server Management Studio

Jun 21, 2007

Hello everyone.

I have a question about granting enough rights to allow a non admin user to start and stop a sql server service via the SQL Server Management Studio by right clicking on the server node.

I have changed the acl's of the SQL Server service security and gave the user rights to start and stop the service. This does allow them to connect remotly to the server using computer manager and they successifully start and stop the service. But, in SQL Server Management Studio the option still does not show up, unless he is a admin of the server.

Does anyone know what other security settings I need to address for the start and stop to show up when I right click on the server node?

Thanks for any help

SQL Server 2005 Start Jobs Window And Job Activity Monitor Do Not Show Job Status Correcly

Mar 14, 2007

Hi,

We have development and user acceptance (UA) servers. When I start a job on the development server, on the management studio, Start Jobs window and Job activity windows indicate "Executing" until the end of the job and finish with "success" or "failure"

But on the UA server, second after I start a job, Start Jobs window comes up with "success" or failure" and Job activity monitor says "idle" but Job continues to log without any error message and updates the tables. So these two windows are not reliable at all. I have to add that I have only job operator rights on the UA server.

Does anybody know what the reason is ?

Question/doubt On SqlDependency.Start/SqlDependency.Stop

Apr 24, 2008

Hello, I have a Question/doubt on SqlDependency.Start/SqlDependency.Stop.

After the implementation of my solution the question sounds "stupid" ... maybe is only the stress due to the fact that I'm going to deploy the application on Test.

Anyway.. I developed this application (windows application) that uses query Notification features to subscribe and get notification from Sql Server 2005 so it use the tipical pattern: SqlDependency.Start, SqlDependency_OnChange,SqlDependency.Stop.

This is application is installed on several client so actually I get have several notifications running on the Server.

When one of the client exit the application and call SqlDependency.Stop the service, queue and procedure are dropped.

Does the command drops all the query notification' service, queue and procedure running on the instance or only the one created by the specific user?

Thank you
Marina B.

My users often view some report for some minutes and after that want to return to parent report.
If they did it after small time (~less than minute), everything is OK. But if this pause is above 1 minute they receive "Runtime Error" message and can only to go to homepage.

I think that this is some session time or something like that.
Am I right? How can fix it?

Pause And Resume Mirroring

Dec 5, 2007

If we have a situation that the Mirror server is unavailable for a day....very unlikely, but it happens when servers are moved from one data center to another....Lets assume we are doing safety off (high performance mode)

Should we pause mirroring on the principal server?

When we pause, does the transaction log keeps growing ?
Can we backup the logs ?

If we don't pause mirroring

Does the transaction log keeps growing ?
Can we backup the logs ?

What we can expect we we bring online the mirror server next day! will there be any performanbce problems since mirroring will try to catch up....

Considering moving to mirroring from logshipping for our disaster recovery.

Thanks,

SQL 2012 :: SSIS Automatic Pause And Manual Restart Options

Jun 25, 2014

As part of an ETL process which takes several days I need to build in an auto pause on processing with no set time for restarting it again. So we cannot use the script..WAITFOR DELAY '00:01:00'

Apparently the Loop is not an option as it uses too much CPU.We need to run a few manual checks and there is no way to determine the amount of time needed. After these check are done I need some way of resuming the package from where it stopped.

The obvious way probably is to build this into two separate packages but this would break the logical way our containers are being setup, in other words, it would make us break a container into two different parts in different packages.

Green Bar Matrix =ReportItems!Color.Value Ignored

Aug 24, 2007

I followed the instructions and the textbox named Color did indeed display alternate colors on the odd rows.
However, when I tried to propogate the color to the whole row using the expression =ReportItems!color.Value for the value of the backgroundcolor property, it was ignored.

So I tried some custom code:
Public Function GetColor()
Dim retValue as String
retValue = Me.ReportItems!Color.Value
return retValue
End Function

The syntax parser didn't like ReportItems either.
I first tried it without the Me object and I got a message about requiring an object so I tried Me.

Has anyone got another idea?

Thanks,

Super Green Newbie Dba - Tran Log Problem... Help, Please?

Oct 9, 2004

Well, I can't backup up my tran log - too big. I knew enough to know you have to back it up, didn't know enough to know that tran log backup is not included in "Full backup". Contractor installation set Growth to "un-restricted". Me, too swamped to delve deeply in time to learn this is a recipe for disaster, and then it was too late - System down because tran log filled up the disk...

(Ironically, this happened the morning of the first day of some training they sent me to - Microsoft's Programming a Microsoft SQL 2000 Database...)

So, some details... The drives on the system :
___ c: size 12G, free 7G
___ d: size 44.9G, free 10M
___ e: size 44.9G, free 13G

Tran log info :
___ filename .... d:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQLdatahorizon_Log.LDF
___ name ........ horizon_Log
___ size ........ 5606392
___ maxsize ..... -1
___ growth ...... 10
___ status ...... 1081410

___ filename ...E:Horizon_Log2Horizon_Log2_Temp
___ name ........ horizon_1_Log
___ size ........ 167168
___ maxsize ..... 640000
___ growth ...... 640
___ status ...... 32834

(there are 2 because the other totally green newbie dba added 1 the day the system went down...)

I *thought* the addition of the 2nd tran log file meant the 1st file was no longer part of the picture, and that my available free disk space was sufficient to backup the 2nd tran log file.

Clearly I'm missing something - when I try to back up, I get this in SQL server error log :
___ Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.)

:confused:___ Does that mean it's trying to backup both the 1st & the 2nd tran logs?
:confused:___ Or is it only backing up the 2nd log, but trying to use D: (with only 10M)?
:confused:___ Or, is it using C: or E:, but tran log backups need some multiple of the size of the actual log, and there's not enough space even though there are multiple G?

I've been reading & googling. So far tried to truncate both files.
( dbcc shrinkfile('horizon_1_log',truncateonly) )
No luck, got these :
___ Cannot shrink log file 2 (horizon_Log) because all logical log files are in use.
___ Cannot shrink log file 3 (horizon_1_Log) because all logical log files are in use.

:confused:___ How do I get them to be not "in use"?
:confused:___ Must the system be down for that? (certainly seems to...)

Also, checked out the EMPTYFILE option. Books Online says :
"Migrates all data from the specified file to other files in the same filegroup"

 ___ Migrates to which "other files", exactly?
 ___ Is this the right way to go?
 ___ If so, how would I proceed after achieving a successul EMPTYFILE operation?

Also...
 ___ In the database's Properties dialog, Transaction Log tab, there's a Delete button. Could that button be used to get me out of this difficulty?

Last, but not least... If I'm going about this altogether wrongly, can I get a pointer or two?

TIA for any and all feedback...

Light Green Exports To Excel As Grey

Jun 23, 2007

Hi All,

I am building reports with red, amber, green highlighting........I am using 'Tomato', PaleGoldenrod' and 'LightGreen'....but the lightgreen turns to grey when exported to excel...

The only green I have found so far that exports ok is YellowGreen but it looks terrible inside a browser....

Is there some way I can get something like LightGreen to export to excel ok? Is there something that I might be able to do or is this a limitation in the rendering to excel?

Thanks
