Storage Of Packages: File System Or Sql Server?
Apr 5, 2006
HI, we are beginning a new project at my company and I was wondering where is the best place to save SSIS packages: file system or SqlServer. I have used other ETL products and they always create a repository on an RDBMS. Since SSIS offers us the choice of DB storage or file system, is there pros and cons of both approach? Will the deployment of our application be simpler by using Sql Server since we would onky move metadata instead of files?
Thank you for your help,
Ccote

We manage some SSIS servers, which has only SSIS and SSIS tools installed on them and not the sql server DB.
SSIS packages and configuration files are deployed on a NAS. We run the SSIS packages through DTEXEC by logging in to the server.
We want to allow developers to run their packages on their own on the server, but at the same time we dont want to give them physical access on the server i.e we do not want to add them into RDP users list on server properties. We want them to allow running their packages remotely on the server.
One way We could think of is by using powershell remoting and we are working on that. But is there any other way or any tool already present for the same.

I've run into a problem with SSIS packages wherein tasks that write or copy files, or create or delete directories, quit execution without any hint of an error nor a failure message, when called from an ASP.NET 2.0 application running on any other machine than the one where the package was created from. By all indications it appeared to be an identity/permissions problem.
Our application involves a separate web server and database server. Both have SQL Server 2005 installed, but the application server originally only had Integration services. The packages are file system-deployed on the application server, and are called using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime methods. For all packages that involve file system tasks, the above problem occurs.
When the above packages are run using the command prompt (either DTEXEC or DTEXECUI) the packages execute just fine. This is expected since we are using an administrative account. However when a ShellExecute of the same command is called from ASP.NET, the same problem occurs.
I've tried giving administrative permissions to the ASPNET worker process user to no avail.
I have likewise attempted to use the SQL Server Agent job approach but that approach might not be acceptable for our clients since it means installing SQL Server 2005 Database services on the application server.
I have read the relevant threads in this forum, namely http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1044739&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=927084&SiteID=1 but failed to find any solution appropriate for our set up.
Anybody got any idea on how to go about this?

Hello,
I've been using SSIS for a while and think I get the gist of how it works (and it works nicely!).
However, because of the configuration on my machine I am constantly moving the dtsx files around (long story). Sometimes I make a full image backup and then later restore those SSIS packages.
The problem is that even if I copy the dtsx files to a different directory and then copy them back (without making any changes) I get a 'Cannot Aquire Connection' message. Other times I get errors that have to do with the encryption of the individual package. For those, I just reset the package to save with a password, save it, and then reopen it and can resave it again with the userkey encryption. This one occured when I move the packages from one machine to another.
Is there a best (or at least good) way to save packages with the sensitive data that won't force me to reconfigure it each time I move a package around? Or have to enter passwords each time?
Also, what is the advantage of saving the files in SQL Server? I assume you are not actually saving the files, just the data about them. I just don't understand it enough to even ask an intelligent question about it.
Thank you for the help.

My current environment has multiple packages stored in SQL server (MSDB).
When working on a set of packages I want to bring them into my local development area
Add existing package only allows you to pull one package at a time - anyone have the secret to selecting multiples

Hi all
Our data management system currently runs DTS packages using DTSPKG.dll.
I am currently looking at the possibliity of replacing the DTS packages and SQL 2000 with DTSX packages using SSIS in SQL 2005.
Do I need a new dll? or will the current dtspkg.dll handle the new DTSX packages?
Many thanks in advance!

I am a Windows developer for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSMS) product.
Our product installation is built with InstallShield and uses the Windows Installer.
On a new installation of Windows 2003 x64 Storage Server R2, at a customer's site, the TSMS product fails to install.
The install of the OS has version 3.01.400.3959 of the Windows Installer and I see no newer version that installs.
Part of our product is 32 bit (console) and another part is x64 (server).
When installing I can see that the install's default is being redirected/reset to C:Program Files (x86)TivoliTSM after it is explicitly set by a custom action to ..Program Files.. . I further observe that our custom actions to write 64 bit registry entries are being refused.
REGSAM samMask = KEY_ALL_ACCESS;
if ( regIsWow64Process () ) samMask = samMask | KEY_WOW64_64KEY;
lStatus = RegCreateKeyEx( hLocalConnectKeyRoot,
szSubkey,
0L,
NULL,
REG_OPTION_NON_VOLATILE,
samMask,
NULL,
hKey,
&dw ) ;
The above fails to create the key.
We have tried four versions of our TSMS spanning many changes but the install acts the same.
This does not happen on any other Windows OS we test on but we do not test on Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 being that it is an OEM product. We did test on Windows server 2003 R2 x64 and do not see this problem.
Do you have any suggestions on how to tackle this problem?
I have full installation traces but can only see that the registry work is being refused. I can't see why.

I have a group of about 5 servers (which will likely grow toabout 25 in the near future) with their names listed in a table in a database on one of the servers. I want to query all servers in that table using the following query to pull the storage drive, database name, created date, age and size of the databases for each server listed in the table:
SELECT left(mf.Physical_Name,2) AS Storage_Drive,
DB_NAME(mf.database_id) AS DatabaseName,
db.create_Date,
DateDiff(day, db.create_date, getDate()) Age,
sum((mf.size*8))/1024 SizeMB
[Code] ...
How would I best accomplish this if I want to implement it using a TSQL procedure?

Hi All,
This application is developed in .NET Compact framework for Symbol Windows CE devices (MC3090). I am using SQL Compact edition as the database and uses merge replication to synchronize back and forth from Central SQL Server. The database is sitting in the SD Card, however when I suspended and restored the device while I am working with the application, it is giving me the following error message.
Error Code: 80004005
Message: OS Error: The OS storage system (RAM, CF, SD or IPSM) is not responding. Retry the operation.
Minor Err: 25049
Source: SQL Server Compact Edition ADO.NET Data Provider
The error message occurs only when I am trying to work with the application after restoring the device from suspended state. I also found KB Article from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919150 and it explains that this issue is fixed in SQL Server Compact Edition which is what I am using now.
Please any help on this issue is very much appreciated.
Thanks
Ravi.

The system could not verify that the destination supports secure storage capability...". I am trying to test a scenario on which the package is saved in SQL Server/msdb and schedule the package via SQL Job Agent. Can someone show me how to save a package using serverstorage and schedule it via SQL Job Agent?

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

Hi folks,
I've been learning how to build an ETL package in MS SQL 2005 using the MSDN turorials. I wanted to deploy the package and followed the procedures (Created a deployment bundle) and then ran the package install wizard. I am now stuck as I cannot view the installed packages thru MS SQL Server Management Studio and obviously cannot use them. I should be able to see a "Storage Packages" folder in the "Object Explorer" window but it isn't available. Any idea why I cannot see this folder ? I know my packages are installed as I can see them in the system table called "dbo.sysdtspackages90". The " Integration Services" service is also started. Not sure what else I can check.
Thanks,
Steph

How to implement distinct storage tiers on SQL Remote BLOB Storage (RBS)?
I want to use this SQL Feature to move files(images, videos, pdf files) from a database to a distinct database dedicated to RBS. Then I want to have several storage tiers, where objects will be saved and moved according access frequency. Old data will be arquived in cheap storage, but it must be always accessible if needed.
Description:
- 1st and main tier: new and frequently accessed objects stored in high performance storage;
- 2nd tier: automatically move older or less accessed objects to an inexpensive and different storage tier;
- in all cases, all objects must be accessible to all users, but accessing to archived objects(2nd tier) will be much slower;

Hello,
I am building partitiong tables, partitioning on different file groups:
the question is:
Partitioned table referred to old data that are not frequent accessed for reporting can be stored on separate location(External storage, tape and so on) or to make partitioning functioning must all file groups must be presents?
If not, how can I separate old data from current ones (still using partitioning) to reduce the size of DB?
What it is the best for storage data and easy to access it when needs arise (eg reporting): Tape, external storage, others?
Thank

Hello,
We have an existing OLD System in SQL Server 2000 DTS Packages.
The Whole application runs on DTS.
There are several Packages which are called from a Master Package. Each Child packages have their own Global Variables. Most of them are the File Location variables to have the Source Location of the Input Data, mainly from the Excel Files.
Now, even if the Global Variables are there to change whenever they want to change the Locations of the Files, they have to goto each child package and change the variable themselves.
To resolve this issue, they want a configuration File (INI) / Table which would store those Variables. My thought is to read from that File/Table and Update all the packages' global variables through an ActiveX Script as the First Step of the Master package. That would eliminate the need of changing anything in the existing System.
But the Problem is the management (PM / DBAs / Team members) have different views to store the Configuration data.
1. Some wants it into a Different Database, having one table for this application so in future they can also add another table for some other application.
2. Some wants to store it in a Table in the Same Database of this Application.
3. Some wants to save it as a INI file.
As i'm the one who's going to really implement it, they have asked me to research for a best solution out there.
so I request to help me to decide which is a good solution and why.
Best Regards,
Deepak

Dear all
I have developed some packages (around 40) on my local system.
now i m trying to move the integration services project on the production server.
when i double click on the intergration services from the local drive of the server all the packages are up(works fine till here)
now i open any of the package-->this is what happens
Prompt1)-->TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------
There were errors while the package was being loaded.
The package might be corrupted.
See the Error List for details.
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------
i press ok and then the prompt comes
Prompt2-->There were build errors.Do you want to continue with the last build and continue..yes..no..
i click yes ..and then error comes
prompt3-->
Error loading RTS-IMRB-DISTRIBUTION.dtsx: The connection "Excel Connection Manager" is not found. This error is thrown by Connections collection when the specific connection element is not found.
and finally the prompt for the OLE DB error
prompt 4-->[OLE DB Destination [14]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "NDELNTX46.IMRB RTS.siddharth" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.
Possible work around suggested to me was that in the base system(read local) before exporting go to package properties and the security and set the security as "Encrypt all with password" and also put some Password which i did and it worked for one.
other thing i thought off was creating the configuration file but first i thought of fully running one complete package on the production and then think of the configuration file.
so i went inside the invidual excel connection and pointed it to the correct new file location and also edited the OLE DB database connection and put my user name and password and checked save password and trying to run the entire thing.
but still the same problem..
one more thing i observed was that my OLE DB was going off everytime i am running the package.and i have to enter my password again...so othe save password i guess is not working
I know its a little long post..but i wanted to explain the entire process and problem to all with description.
all suggestions are welcome
Thanks in advance
cheers & Happy new year

I am looking for some microsoft recommendation on storing images in SQL Server Vs File System. Here is what our requirement is.
Currently we are using SQL Server 2000 with a VB6(COM+) & ASP front end. Our architecture involves Log Shipping & Replication. We use log shipping for our DR site and Replication to replicate to Datawarehouse & DB2 enviornment. I have been trying to research this topic and have come up with opinion favoring both sides mostly file system but nobody seems to point any Microsoft recommendation.
With our application we are looking for Transactions, backups, Log shipping & replication with these images. I have read MS implementation of TerraServer and there they recommend storing them in SQL Server if above is required. (https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/reskit/part3/c1161.mspx?mfr=true)
Can somebody please point me to some Microsoft recommendation and what does SQL Server 2005 offers in this aspect.
Thanks

In my pocket pc inventory application i keep database .sdf file in My Documents. This gives me good performance. But the problem is that sometime my pocket pc hangs and some users cold boot the device and everything is lost.
I tried with keeping my .sdf file on SD card. This way data is there even after cold reboot, but the preformance is very bad. it takes some seconds just to insert only one record. Also if connection is not closed properly due to any reason, the database file is corrupted.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to persist my .sdf file even after cold reboot without degrading the performance?
Regards.

I have a directory with images and a table in my DB with the path of each file. The main application allow me to create reports where I can display an image, so I was thinking to use a query like:
SELECT [ID]
,[PT_CODE]
,[FILE_PATH],
CASE WHEN [FILE_PATH] IS NOT NULL THEN
(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK [FILE_PATH], SINGLE_BLOB) TT)
END
AS IMAGE_LOADED
FROM [DB].[dbo].[TABLE_MR_FILES]But I keep getting the error:
Incorrect syntax near 'FILE_PATH'.I have try multiple combinations without luck to make the OPENROWSET read the path stored in the column [FILE_PATH]. What am I missing?
Note: I am using MSSQL 2012. I don't want to import the images into the DB just load them in the fly as needed by the report runned from the application. I have full access to the DB so if a store procedure is the solution I can go with it.

I have a well-structured but also very large binary data-set that is generated by a C++ application every five minutes. The data needs to be accessed by SQL applications. Since data is generated every five minutes, performance is key, both for write and read. The data set is about 500MB.If data is written to the file system, the write performance doesn't involve SQL server. For reading it, I have a CLR to read the portions of the data that I need based on offset and length. That works and is very fast. The problem is that data is stored in the file system, so it is not self-contained within the database.
A second option that I haven't explored yet, is to write the data into a table as VARBINARY(MAX). I would read the data using SUBSTRING with appropriate offset and length. Performance of SQL write/read of binary data of this size, and whether there is a third option I haven't thought off. I'm using SQL Server 2014.

I had few databases developed in SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I have detached all the databases and stopped developing anything new other than taking reqular backup of detached .mdf and .ldf files. I installed Vista on the other Hard drive that corrupted my XP installation drive letters so I had to reinstall XP OS. I have reinstalled SQL 2005 Dev edition. Now I am trying to attach the database it is giving error of Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". I tried to copy those .mdf and .Ldf files through windows explorer and it is not letting me copy past in the other place. I am getting Access denied from OS. I have about 5 databases and only one has this problem.
What is going on and how do I solve this? Is the OS has locked the file? My home computer is not in a domain. I tried to right click the file to see if I can set access permission on the file. There is no such security options. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

I need to implement a file system for an application that allows me to roll back to a point in time. I can do this with either a journaling file system (Unix based such as JFS) or with a database file system such as Oracle Internet File system (now Oracle Content Services). I would MUCH prefer to use SQL Server but cannot find anything that supports this other than a 2000 ppt referencing the then up and coming SQL Server .NET File System.
The application(s) in question are older and store data in proprietary data files and need to access a local (or mapped) drive in standard form (d:programsmyprogram).
Does SQL Server 2005 or 2008 support this type of access? I have searched but cannot find anything to support this.
Thanks.

In the destination folder, this filename needs to appear as:

In my File System Task, I'm pretty sure I'm going to need an expression with a replace, substring, etc. But am having a hard time nailing down the exact syntax.
