Store A Null Value Into A Database Coming From A Form
Apr 27, 2007
I have a form and a connectionString to a SQL database. If the textbox at the form is empty i want to store a null value there but when i pass this value as a parameter it brings the following error: Failed to convert parameter value from a String to a Int32..
cmd.Parameters("@Segundo_nombre").Value = txtSecondName.Text.ToString --> suposing is null it brings an Error.
cmd.Parameters.Add(Apellido)
How can i manage this? I want to store this value if it is null or not.
Also i don't know how to assign a null value to a variable. I tried with
v_flag = check_selection.check_string(v_idioma)
If v_flag = 1 Then 'la variable posee el texto Seleccione
v_idioma = DBNull.Value
but it's not working.
Thanks!!

How can I pass into the database (@User_fax = null) if the fax form field is empty, from a command type Stored Procedure? For example:
Dim CmdUpdate As New SqlCommand("Form2_NewUser", strConnection)
CmdUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
CmdUpdate.Parameters.Add("@User_fax", SqlDbType.char, 9)
CmdUpdate.Parameters("@User_fax").Value = fax.Text()
...
strConnection.open()
CmdUpdate.ExecuteNonQuery
strConnection.close()
And, the stored procedure inside Sql server:
USE market1
GO
ALTER PROC Form2_NewUser
@User_id bigint, @User_fax char(9),...
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
UPDATE Users
SET User_fax = @User_fax, ...
WHERE User_id = @User_id
SET NOCOUNT OFF
GO

Hi
I want to know how do we store null in the database
i know Null is unkown value
but it has to be something so the SQL server can know its null ( computer only knows 0s and 1s )
is it pointers and null does not have a pointer?
or do we store something physically?
an example : we have string(varchar) column that has this value in it "Joey Tribbiani" that means in the hard disk we will see 14 bytes "Joey Tribbiani" in there, if we changed the value to "Monika" the 14 bytes will be replaced by 5 bytes "Monika", if we changed to empty strike then we will have 0 bytes ""
now if changed it to become NULL what is going to happen to the hard disk, what is going to be in there physically??
may anyone help me in this?
many thanks

I have the following view.
The column prod_Master.M2_Pct is defined as float.Yet for some of the rows, the value in [% of Total Target] comes up as null even though there is a number in prod.Measure column. There is valid non-null data in prod_Master.M2_Pct.
I tried LTRIM(RTRIM(prod.Measure)), but no change.
Use ProdDB
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.prod.ProdNo AS [Prod No], dbo.prod.ProdName AS [Prod Name],

The column alerts_ind shows only Y or N in the table patient_status.
The table patient_status_mstr show the description of the patient which "discharged". All I want to do is if the patient is flagged with "discharge" the columns "alerts_ind" shows "Y". but something wrong? below is the code.

Im trying to determine the best way to store data gathered from a form that a user will fill out online. The form is dynamic and is customized at run time based on group-specific criteria. The end result is a form that might have 3 extra text boxes, 2 extra sets of radio buttons and a freeform textbox, whereas for another group, there might be a slightly different set of input fields. Now comes the issue of storing this data. Since the fields can be somewhat dynamic, it could get tricky to define table columns for each possible input field. So Im considering storing the data as xml. Has anyone else had to build custom forms and ended up storing the data as xml ?

Hi,
I'm pretty new to ASP.NET and VB, but I'm working on a project which is essentially a staff directory. Using VS 2005, I've setup a basic grid view which connects to an object which connects via a data layer to a SQL database with Name, Surname, Email, Extension No and Department fields.
I have it working so that if a user enters a name and surname for example, it will return all records with either the name matching or surname matching input parameters. What I want to do is to set up a SQL query which is:
SELECT * FROM records WHERE (Name LIKE @Name) AND (Surname LIKE @Surname) AND (Email LIKE @Email) AND (Dept LIKE @Dept)
so that if the user only enters the first name and surname for example as above, it ONLY returns the record which matches the first name and surname and not all records with either/or. One way I've thought of to do this is to convert the empty fields to "Nothing" so that it fullfils the search parameter for the empty fields. If someone can explain how to do this, or can suggest a better way, I'd be grateful.
Cheers,
Tom

GO
if the user enter in the column HouseNumber=1733 that value passed in sp @HouseNumber = N'1733', suppose user can not type any value in the column HouseNumber means, i assign the value HouseNumber='%'. HouseNumber is a varchar datatype.
what my question is: if the column datatype money or int or bit means what is the value i assign @Bedrooms = 2, this situation. since bedrooms is int datatype. if i assign @Bedrooms ='%', conversion error will occur. pls any one can help me come out this problem.

Hello,
My company Intranet has a form that agents can use to post their comments about the company to upper management, but our customer service department would like to modify the form so that the agent has to pick from a comment type.
The dropdown options on the form will be as follows:
ComplimentsComplaintsGeneral CommentsSuggestions
Each dropdown option has a designated table in a SQL DB.Using postback on the same page, I need to change which fields of the form are visible based upon which dropdown selection the user chooses, and I need the fields to then be inserted into the table that corresponds with the dropdown selection item.
For example: If the Compliments dropdown selection is picked, I need a text box to show for the user's location, the name of the customer, account number, and the message box. Once the submit button is clicked, the characters in these boxes need to be inserted into the Compliments table using its data adapter.
However, if the user selects Suggestions, the name of the customer and the account number should not be visible, since these fields do not exist and when the submit button is pressed, the Suggestions table should be updated.
If you need more information, I will provide whatever is needed.
As always, thanks for everyone's assistance.
Chris

We have a case where in we should show date based on conditions for e.g if we had a column defined as
col varchar(10) then we would show col as 'NULL' for some condition and actual value when no condition
Normaly date values are stored here e.g under col 20150901 .
Case
when col>'20150901' then 'NULL'
else col
end as Derivedcol
Note this is an extract process and we are presenting data by pumping the data in a table .
Now there is another similar column -colz varchar(10) which stores date but doesnt have case condition so whenever date has no value its shows null which is database null.
So whats the difference between database null and string null ?
How can we show database null for the case condition instead of string "null"?

I'm using SQL server on godaddy.com, and for the life of me, tried all freakin day yesterday to get a form to send data to my table, and can't get it to work for the life of me
I think the asp form sends the information to the asp page that is to add the information to the tables correctly, but am not entirely sure, so here is the code for the form:

Form Entry

CustomerID:

Company Name:

Contact Name:

Address1:

Address2:

Address3:

City:

State:

Zip:

Email:

Now for the page that is giving me the problem (I think). I'm pretty sure I'm fudging up the connectivity somewhere because all I get is an http 500 error every time I try to upload the information.
Why won't it bloody connect?!?!
Also, is the DIM function on this page used to hide important information? If you guys can help me fix this, I'd be incredibly, incredibly greatful, I'm frustrated out of my mind!

I've made a form and now all I want to do is save everything in the form into a new database file but I don't know how. I'm using Visual Web Developer 2005. Somehow I'm guessing that I have to set something somewhere so when the submit button is hit, it knows to save it to a database file which doesn't exist yet so it would have to create it. It should be easy but I can't figure it out.

Very basic question here but I need to add a form to a page so it adds content, its as simple as that. I've done this kind of using a <asp.Formview> tag and it works, but becuase I think I've used a form view I have to click add to insert data first. Should I be using the <asp:formview> tag or is it a problem with the templates?

Hi,
I'm not very asp.net savy and could not find any solid examples of what I need done. I have one text box on my page and one submit button. I would like the information entered from the text box to go into a SQL database when clicking on the submit button. I'm not sure what the exact coding should be in order to get this operating the way I want. I'm coding in VB, this is what I have so far:

Untitled Page

Thanks,
Derek

Hi !
I am creating a website with a form that users can fill up the
information. This form is about the school's information of the users.
After fill up this form, the users will have to click the submit button
that will submit the form to be saved in a database.
I have created the database for that form. My question is how can I
save the result of this form to my database. Let's say I have 5
textboxes in that form, name, school's name, school's address, major,
and comments.
thanks a lot in advanced!
