Simple Examples Of SQLCLR By Connecting To SQL Express User Instances In Management Studio Via VB 2005 Express

Sep 28, 2007

Hi all,
I want to do SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express and I have read the following articles and books:
(i) Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio in http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/11/22/connecting-to-sql-express-user-insta...
(ii) Managing SQL Server Express with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sql/2005/mgsqlexpwssmse.mspx
(iii) Chapter 16 - Going Beyand Transact-SQL: Using the SQL Common Language Rutime (SQLCLR) in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for Dummies
(iv) Chapter 21 - Working with the Common Language Runtime in Microsft SQL Server 2005 Programming for Dummies
(v) Chapter 4 - Introduction to Common Language Runtime (CLR) Integration in Programming SQL Server 2005 by Bill Hamilton.
I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things:
(1) Pipe Name for a User Instance, (2) Enabling (or Disabling) the CLR by using Transact-SQL, (3) Creating a Transact-SQL script, (4) Creating an Assembly, (5) Creating a backup device, etc. I need to see some simple examples of SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. Please help and tell me where in the websites I can find them.

Thanks in advance,

Calling A Stored Procedure From ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express: Working With SELECT Statements In The Stored Procedure-4 Errors?

Mar 3, 2008

Hi all,

I have 2 sets of sql code in my SQL Server Management Stidio Express (SSMSE):

(1) /////--spTopSixAnalytes.sql--///

USE ssmsExpressDB

GO

CREATE Procedure [dbo].[spTopSixAnalytes]

AS

SET ROWCOUNT 6

SELECT Labtests.Result AS TopSixAnalytes, LabTests.Unit, LabTests.AnalyteName

FROM LabTests

ORDER BY LabTests.Result DESC

GO

(2) /////--spTopSixAnalytesEXEC.sql--//////////////

USE ssmsExpressDB

GO
EXEC spTopSixAnalytes
GO

I executed them and got the following results in SSMSE:
TopSixAnalytes Unit AnalyteName
1 222.10 ug/Kg Acetone
2 220.30 ug/Kg Acetone
3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone
4 140.30 ug/L Acetone
5 120.70 ug/L Acetone
6 90.70 ug/L Acetone
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I try to use this Stored Procedure in my ADO.NET-VB 2005 Express programming:
//////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")

Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)

sqlDataAdapter.SelectCommand.Command.Type = CommandType.StoredProcedure

'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor

'of the DataSet class.

Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")

sqlConnection.Open()

sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)

sqlConnection.Close()

End Sub

End Class
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors:
Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

More Information for you to know:
I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.

Using Northwind Database In VB 2008 Express Tutorial

Feb 23, 2008

I have been following the Visual Basic Guided Tour for VB 2008 Express and I'm having a problem with the following part.

ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.msdnexpress.v90.en/dv_vbcnexpress/html/48fcb538-d8c7-4299-a2bf-a5b6f80d879d.htm
Creating LINQ to SQL Classes: Using the O/R Designer

I am getting the error "Generating user instances in SQL Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances.", when I get to the Test Connection button.

I have found the following help page,

ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.msdnexpress.v90.en/SqlExpressBol/html/85385aae-10fb-4f8b-9eeb-cce2ee7da019.htm

but I have no idea how to use this information as it assumes the user knows what they are doing!
The solution appears to involve running a scipt of some sort, but where would that be run?
I have looked at the SQL server Express information, but can't find how to run sp_configure.
Your help would be much appreciated.

VMD / SQLServer 2005 Express Stored Procedure

Jun 28, 2006

I am building a Visual Web Developer site with a SQL Server 2005 Express backend. I am trying to create the login page, I have written a stored procedure that takes in the username and password and returns a value which indicates whether the user is valid or not.
My problem now is integrating this stored procedure into the page. In Visual Studio 2003 you could just drag and drop the stored procedure from the Database Explorer window and it would create the neccessary SQLCommand which you can then pass parameters too and recieve return values, i.e:

sqlcommand1.Paramters[ "@username" ].value = TextUsername.Text;
sqlcommand1.Paramters[ "@password" ].value = TextPassword.Text;
sqlConnection1.Open();
sqlCommand1.ExecuteNonQuery();
Int Result = (int)sqlcommand.Parameters["@returnvalue"].value;
sqlConnection1.Close();

I see in VWD there are SqlDataSource's etc, is this what I need to use to do what I'm looking for and how do they exactly work? Ideally what I'm looking for is when a user clicks login, the contents of the 'username' and 'password' text boxes are queried against the database. What controls and configuration is required to achieve this?

Many thanks in advance,

Mervski

SQL Server Express And C# 2.0: Cannot Find Stored Procedure...

Sep 5, 2006

Hi everybody, I created several stored procedure in a local sql server 2005 express database, now when I call/execute them in the asp.net 2.0 web page, it returns an error message of "Cannot find the stored procedure '<proc_name>'", this is funny, when I execute the commandin a sql query window "exec sp_GetAllArticles", it also returns cannot find stored procedure, but when I execute the "Use <DBName>" and thenexecute the statement, it works. The sql connection used in codes is ok. So, what I have missed to set or where I made mistake?Code:Inside web.config, <add name="Connectstring" connectionString="Data Source=DENSIASQLExpress;Initial Catalog=DbName;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> inside Load event, DAL.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Connectstring"].ConnectionString; private void DisplayLatestResources() { DAL.CreateCommand("sp_GetLatestFiveTrainingResources"); DAL.ExecuteReader(); SqlDataReader dr = DAL.DataReader; ..... } Try supplying with user id and password, same result...also try using aspnet_regsql.exe, same result also... An Extended Stored Procedure Problem With SQL Server Express

Jun 5, 2007

I have created an extended stored procedure (that executes a DLL file) in SQL Server 2005 Express. When I execute this procedure the execution enters an infinite loop and hangs there. When I execute the same procedure on SQL Server 2000 it executes correctly. I wonder if the problem relates to SQL Server 2005, since no problem occurs with SQL Sever 2000. And if so, how could I repair it?

Problems Calling SQL Express Stored Procedure From Access (using VBA)

Oct 4, 2007

Crossposted from VBA forum:

I'm upsizing a database from Access 2003 to a SQL Express backend combined with an Access frontend. Along the way, I'm trying to shift the larger queries into stored procedures, but many of our queries require variables. I'm having a hard time with the VBA to run this stored procedure, and looking for suggestions that make sense to a relative newbie to VBA.

Here's my code, which is being triggered by a button click on a form containing input boxes StartDt and EndDt for the date range:

Code Block

Private Sub btnDateFormQuery_Click()
'On Error GoTo Err_btnDateFormQuery_Click

If CreateDSNConnection("server", "database", "user", "password") Then
'// All is okay.
Else
'// Not okay.
End If

Dim rs_sp As Recordset 'Set in Global Module
Dim qdf As QueryDef 'Set in Global Module
Dim SP_SQL As String 'Set in Global Module
Dim Db As Database
Set Db = CurrentDb()
Set qdf = Db.CreateQueryDef("qry_Donors") 'Set in Global Module
qdf.ReturnsRecords = True 'Set in Global Module
qdf.ODBCTimeout = 15 'Set in Global Module
SP_SQL = "Execute sp_DonorQRY " & "'" & StartDt & "'" & ", " & "'" & EndDt & "'"
qdf.SQL = SP_SQL 'Set in Global Module

'Check Dates for errors
Call CheckDates 'Procedure to check dates
If CheckDatesErr = True Then
Exit Sub ' don't continue
End If

'Here is where we need to enter the code that will drive the query.

Set rs_sp = qdf.OpenRecordset
qdf.Close

rs_sp.MoveFirst

rs_sp.Close

Exit_btnDateFormQuery_Click:
Exit Sub

Err_btnDateFormQuery_Click:
MsgBox Err.Description
Resume Exit_btnDateFormQuery_Click

End Sub

During Debugging, when I reach the line "qdf.SQL = SP_SQL", I receive the following error:
Runtime Error '3129'Invalid SQL Statement; expected 'DELETE', 'INSERT', 'PROCEDURE', 'SELECT', or 'UPDATE'.

I've been able to copy out the value of SP_SQL and paste it into a pass-through query, and it runs beautifully. Just not having any luck trying to script it.

Thanks in advance.

How Do I Create A Stored Procedure In SQL Server Management Studio Express?

Dec 5, 2006

I have wrriten many stored procedures in the past without issue, but this is my first time using SQL Server Management Studio Express. I am having trouble creating a new stored procedure. Here is what's happening:
I am opening my database, right clicking on "Stored Procedures" and selecting "New Stored Procedure". A new window opens with a template for creating a stored procedure. The window is called: "SQLEXPRESS.DBName - sqlquery1.sql". I then type up my stored procedure without an issue.
However, when I go to save the stored procedure it wants to save it as a separate file in a projects folder. It does not become part of the DB (as far as I can tell).
When I used to use Enterprise Manager (not an option anymore) this never happened.
I'm sure I'm doing something dumb. Can someone enlighten me.
Thanks,Chris

My question is: how is the working command (like exec, truncate,..) to empty my st.procedure, not to drop/delete it?

Microsoft KB 308049: How To Call A Parameterized Stored Procedure By Using ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express-pubs Is Processed By ?

Mar 10, 2008

Hi all,

I tried to use the "How to call a Parameterterized Stored Procedure by Using ADO.NET and Visual Basic.NET" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308049 to learn "Use DataReader to Return Rows and Parameter" in my VB 2005 Express. I did the following things:

1) created a stored procedure "pubsTestProc1.sql" in my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE):

USE pubs

GO

Create Procedure TestProcedure

(

@au_idIN varchar (11),

@numTitlesOUT Integer OUTPUT

)

As

select A.au_fname, A.au_lname, T.title

from authors as A join titleauthor as TA on

A.au_id=TA.au_id

join titles as T

on T.title_id=TA.title_id

where A.au_id=@au_idIN

set @numTitlesOUT = @@Rowcount

return (5)

2) created a project "pubsTestProc1.vb" in my VB 2005 Express and copied the following code from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308049 (i.e. Added the code to the Form_Load eventQL_Client) :

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.Client

Imports System.Data.SqlType

Imports System.Data.Odbc

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Dim PubsConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection & _

("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;integrated security=sspi;" & _

"initial Catalog=pubs;")

Dim testCMD As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand & _

("TestProcedure", PubsConn)

testCMD.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

Dim RetValue As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add & _

("RetValue", SqlDbType.Int)

RetValue.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

Dim NumTitles As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add & _

("@numtitlesout", SqlDbType.Int)

auIDIN.Value = "213-46-8915"

PubsConn.Open()

Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = testCMD.ExecuteReader()

Console.WriteLine("Book Titles for this Author:")

Console.WriteLine("{0}", myReader.GetString(2))

Loop

myReader.Close()

Console.WriteLine("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value))

Console.WriteLine("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value))

End Sub

End Class

First, I am completely lost here alreay. Second, I should have the following code from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308049 too:

OLE DB Data Provider

Dim PubsConn As OleDbConnection = New OleDbConnection & _

auIDIN.Value = "213-46-8915"

Dim myReader As OleDbDataReader = testCMD.ExecuteReader()

Console.WriteLine("Book Titles for this Author:")

Do While myReader.Read

Loop

myReader.Close()

Console.WriteLine("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value))

Console.WriteLine("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value))
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I am completely out of touch with these two sets of the code from the Microsoft KB 308049 and do not know how to proceed to get the following output stated in the Microsoft KB 308049-see the below:

4.
Modify the connection string for the Connection object to point to the server that is running SQL Server.

5.

Run the code. Notice that the ExecuteScalar method of the Command object returns the parameters. ExecuteScalar also returns the value of column 1, row 1 of the returned rowset. Thus, the value of intCount is the result of the count function from the stored procedure.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Please help and tell me what I should do to get this project landed on the right track.

Thanks in advance,

Accessing A Stored Procedure From ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express:How To Define/add 1 Output && 2 Input Parameters In Param. Coll.?

Feb 23, 2008

Hi all,

In a Database "AP" of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE), I have a stored procedure "spInvTotal3":

CREATE PROC [dbo].[spInvTotal3]

@InvTotal money OUTPUT,

@DateVar smalldatetime = NULL,

@VendorVar varchar(40) = '%'

This stored procedure "spInvTotal3" worked nicely and I got the Results: My Invoice Total = $2,211.01 in
my SSMSE by using either of 2 sets of the following EXEC code:
(1)
USE AP
GO
--Code that passes the parameters by position
DECLARE @MyInvTotal money
EXEC spInvTotal3 @MyInvTotal OUTPUT, '2006-06-01', 'P%'
PRINT 'My Invoice Total = $' + CONVERT(varchar,@MyInvTotal,1)
GO
(2)
USE AP
GO
DECLARE @InvTotal as money
EXEC spInvTotal3
@InvTotal = @InvTotal OUTPUT,
@DateVar = '2006-06-01',
@VendorVar = '%'
SELECT @InvTotal
GO
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I want to print out the result of @InvTotal OUTPUT in the Windows Application of my ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming. I have created a project "spInvTotal.vb" in my VB 2005 Express with the following code:

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form1

Public Sub printMyInvTotal()

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS; Initial Catalog=AP; Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

Try

conn.Open()

Dim cmd As New SqlCommand

cmd.Connection = conn

cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

cmd.CommandText = "[dbo].[spInvTotal3]"

Dim param As New SqlParameter("@InvTotal", SqlDbType.Money)

param.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output

cmd.Parameters.Add(param)

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()

'Print out the InvTotal in TextBox1

TextBox1.Text = param.Value

Catch ex As Exception

MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

conn.Close()

End Try

End Sub

End Class
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above code and I got no errors, no warnings and no output in the TextBox1 for the result of "InvTotal"!!??
I have 4 questions to ask for solving the problems in this project:
#1 Question: I do not know how to do the "DataBinding" for "Name" in the "Text.Box1".
How can I do it?
#2 Question: Did I set the CommandType property of the command object to
CommandType.StoredProcedure correctly?
#3 Question: How can I define the 1 output parameter (@InvTotal) and
2 input parameters (@DateVar and @VendorVar), add them to

Calling A Stored Procedure Inside Another Stored Procedure (or Nested Stored Procedures)

Nov 1, 2007

Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

T-SQL And Visual Basic 2005 Codes That Execute A User-Defined Stored Procedure In Management Studio Express (Part 2)

Jan 23, 2008

Hi Jonathan Kehayias, Thanks for your valuable response.

I had a hard time to sumbit my reply in that original thread yesterday. So I created this new thread.

Here is my response to the last code/instruction you gave me:

I corrected a small mistake (on Integrated Security-SSPI and executed the last code you gave me.

I got the following debug error message:

1) A Box appeared and said: String or binary data would be truncated.

The statement has been terminated.

|OK|

2) After I clicked on the |OK| button, the following message appeared:

This "SqlException was unhandled

String or binary data would be truncated.

The statement has been terminated."

is pointing to the "Throw" code statement in the middle of

.......................................

Catch ex As Exception

MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

..........

Please help and advise how to correct this problem in my project that is executed in my VB 2005 Express-SQL Server Management Studio Express PC.

Thanks,
Scott Chang

The code of my Form1.vb is listed below:

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form1

Public Sub InsertNewFriend()

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

connection.Open()

Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

command.Parameters.Add("@procPersonID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = 7

command.Parameters.Add("@procFirstName", SqlDbType.NVarChar).Value = "Craig"

Dim resulting As String = command.ExecuteNonQuery

MessageBox.Show("Row inserted: " + resulting)

Catch ex As Exception

MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

connection.Close()

End Try

End Sub

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

SQL Server 2014 :: Embed Parameter In Name Of Stored Procedure Called From Within Another Stored Procedure?

Jan 29, 2015

I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[runDMQ3_2014LDLComplete]
@QQ_YYYY char(7),
@YYYYQQ char(8)
AS
begin
SET NOCOUNT ON;
select [provider group],provider, NPI, [01-Total Patients with DM], [02-Total DM Patients with LDL],

[Code] ....

ADO.NET 2-VB 2005 Express Form1:Printing Output Of Returned Data/Parameters From The Parameters Collection Of A Stored Procedure

Mar 12, 2008

Hi all,
From the "How to Call a Parameterized Stored Procedure by Using ADO.NET and Visual Basic.NET" in http://support.microsft.com/kb/308049, I copied the following code to a project "pubsTestProc1.vb" of my VB 2005 Express Windows Application:

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlDbType

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Dim PubsConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;integrated security=sspi;" & "initial Catalog=pubs;")

Dim testCMD As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("TestProcedure", PubsConn)

testCMD.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

Dim RetValue As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("RetValue", SqlDbType.Int)

RetValue.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

Dim auIDIN As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("@au_idIN", SqlDbType.VarChar, 11)

auIDIN.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input

Dim NumTitles As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("@numtitlesout", SqlDbType.Int)

NumTitles.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output

auIDIN.Value = "213-46-8915"

PubsConn.Open()

Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = testCMD.ExecuteReader()

Console.WriteLine("Book Titles for this Author:")

Do While myReader.Read

Console.WriteLine("{0}", myReader.GetString(2))

Loop

myReader.Close()

Console.WriteLine("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value))

Console.WriteLine("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value))

End Sub

End Class

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The original article uses the code statements in pink for the Console Applcation of VB.NET. I do not know how to print out the output of ("Book Titles for this Author:"), ("{0}", myReader.GetString(2)), ("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value)) and ("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value)) in the Windows Application Form1 of my VB 2005 Express. Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Grab IDENTITY From Called Stored Procedure For Use In Second Stored Procedure In ASP.NET Page

Dec 28, 2005

I have a sub that passes values from my form to my stored procedure. The stored procedure passes back an @@IDENTITY but I'm not sure how to grab that in my asp page and then pass that to my next called procedure from my aspx page. Here's where I'm stuck: Public Sub InsertOrder() Conn.Open() cmd = New SqlCommand("Add_NewOrder", Conn) cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure ' pass customer info to stored proc cmd.Parameters.Add("@FirstName", txtFName.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@LastName", txtLName.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@AddressLine1", txtStreet.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@CityID", dropdown_city.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@Zip", intZip.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@EmailPrefix", txtEmailPre.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@EmailSuffix", txtEmailSuf.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhoneAreaCode", txtPhoneArea.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhonePrefix", txtPhonePre.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhoneSuffix", txtPhoneSuf.Text) ' pass order info to stored proc cmd.Parameters.Add("@NumberOfPeopleID", dropdown_people.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@BeanOptionID", dropdown_beans.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@TortillaOptionID", dropdown_tortilla.SelectedValue) 'Session.Add("FirstName", txtFName.Text) cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() cmd = New SqlCommand("Add_EntreeItems", Conn) cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.Parameters.Add("@CateringOrderID", get identity from previous stored proc) <------------------------- Dim li As ListItem Dim p As SqlParameter = cmd.Parameters.Add("@EntreeID", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar) For Each li In chbxl_entrees.Items If li.Selected Then p.Value = li.Value cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() End If Next Conn.Close()I want to somehow grab the @CateringOrderID that was created as an end product of my first called stored procedure (Add_NewOrder) and pass that to my second stored procedure (Add_EntreeItems)

System Stored Procedure Call From Within My Database Stored Procedure

Mar 28, 2007

I have a stored procedure that calls a msdb stored procedure internally. I granted the login execute rights on the outer sproc but it still vomits when it tries to execute the inner. Says I don't have the privileges, which makes sense.

How can I grant permissions to a login to execute msdb.dbo.sp_update_schedule()? Or is there a way I can impersonate the sysadmin user for the call by using Execute As sysadmin some how?

Thanks in advance

Ad Hoc Query Vs Stored Procedure Performance Vs DTS Execution Of Stored Procedure

Jan 23, 2008

Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio

What could explain this?

Obviously,

All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.

Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).

The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes
