Passing Fields As Parameter Of Stored Procedure

Jul 6, 2000

Does anyone know how to pass a list of fields into a stored procedure and then use those fields in a select statement. Here's what I'm trying to do.

I have a front end application that allows the user to pick the fields they want return as a record set. Currently, all this is being done in the application. But, I'd like SQL to do it, if it's possible.

I'd pass the following into a stored procedure.

Set @Fields = "First, Last, ID" -- This is done in the application

Exec usp_return @Fields

Obviously, the following fails stored procedure doesn't work ...

CREATE PROCEDURE @FIELDS varchar(255) AS

SELECT @FIELDS FROM MY_TABLE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any ideas?
Altering Column Fields With A Stored Procedure
Jul 20, 2005
I have some columns of data in SQL server that are of NVARCHAR(420)format but they are dates. The dates are in DD/MM/YY format. I want tobe able to convert them to our accounting system format which isYYYYMMDD. I know the format is strange but it will make things easierin the long run if all of the dates are the same when working betweenthe 2 different databases. Basically, I need to take a look at theyear portion (with a SUBSTRING function maybe) to see if it is greaterthan 50 (there will not be any dates that are less than 1950) and ifit is concatenate 19 with it (ex. 65 = 1965). Then, concatenate themonth and day from the rest to form the date we need in NUMERIC(8).So, a date of January 17, 2003 (currently in the format of 17/01/03)would become 20030117. In VB, the function I would write is somethinglike the following:/*Dim sCurrentDate as StringDim sMon as stringDim sDay as StringDim sYear as StringDim sNewDate as StringsCurrentDate = "17/01/03"sMon = Mid(sCurrentDate, 4, 2)sDay = Mid(sCurrentDate, 1, 2)sYear = Mid(sCurrentDate, 7, 2)If sYear < 50 ThensYear = "20" & sYearElseIf sYear > 50 ThensYear = "19" & sYearEnd ifsNewDate = sYear & sMon & sDay*/I was thinking of doing this in a Stored Procedure but am really rustywith SQL (it's been since college).The datatype would end up being NUMERIC(8). How I would write it if Inew how to write it would be: grab the column name prior to theprocedure, create a temp column, format the values, place them intothe temp column, delete the old column, and then rename the tempcolumn to the name of the column that I grabbed in the beginning ofthe procedure. Most likely this is the only way to do it but I have noidea how to go about it.
C# Stored Procedure Processing Binary Data To Sql Fields
Jul 25, 2007
In the code sample below, case eLABEL, eENGUNITS works ok. The target SQL field is defined as varchar(50).
The second section is not so happy. It is attempting to write to an SQL field defined as binary(2)
Executing an SQL script to excercise this line results in error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'foreign'
where 'foreign' is the name (FieldDef.sFldName) of the SQL field being written.
The c# code composes the following command:
"UPDATE " + acPointType + " SET " + FieldDef.sFldName +
" = @data_params WHERE VEC = '" + acVECName +
"' and name = '" + acPointName + "';";
What is the proper syntax for the second case set?
Code Snippet
case vcidatatype.eLABEL:
case vcidatatype.eENGUNITS:
{
byte[] bbuff = new byte[512];
bbuff = rdr.ReadBytes(FieldDef.iLen);
vciSqlCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@data_params", SqlDbType.VarBinary));
vciSqlCommand.Parameters["@data_params"].Value = bbuff;
break;
}
case vcidatatype.eFIDADR:
case vcidatatype.eLANADR:
{
byte[] bbuf = new byte[512] ;
bbuf = rdr.ReadBytes(2);
vciSqlCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@data_params", SqlDbType.Binary));
vciSqlCommand.Parameters["@data_params"].Value = bbuf;
break;
Help Needed : Not Able To See Fields Value When Creating A Report By Calling A Stored Procedure
Mar 23, 2008
Details :
Reporting Services 2000, SQL 2000 database, Visual Studio . Net 2003
In Report Design view
In "Data" tab, I can see records for column 'sRCName' returned from the stored procedure(usp_GetRouteCodeData) after clicking '!' icon. When I moved to "Preview" tab, I am getting below error message.
"The value expression for the textbox €˜sRCName€™ refers to the field €˜sRCName€™. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."
Observation : there is no value returned from the dataset on 'Fields' panel. The SP is accessing a table called tblRCM.
If I go to the Data--> Dataset --> Query, change the "Command Type" from 'Stored Procedure' to 'Text' and entered
select * from tblRCM at Query string area, the report is running fine.
Issue: This issue only happens at my laptop, my team member can create the same report using the same stored procedure without any error. The database is sitting on a server.
In the troubleshooting process, I tried to create a simple report by calling a stored procedure(CustOrderHist) from NorthWind DB in my local SQL server, I am able to see the data/value in 'Fields' panel and sucessfully view the data in 'Preview' tab.
Looks like the issue only happen on my machine, for a report that using stored procedure to access a DB sitting on a server.
I hope to hear from anyone who have encountered the similiar issue before, or, have any clue to resolve the issue.
Thanks.
Any Easy Class Method To Update About 100 Fields Of A Database Using Stored Procedure?
Feb 1, 2007
Hi all,
 I am using  C# for ASP.NEt 2003.
I would like to know if there is any easy method to update a database with about 100 fields in it.
At present, I pass all the values of the controls on the web form to the stored procedure as parameters like :-
myCommand.Parameters.Add("@CustomerID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = txtCustomerID.text
Like this,  I add all 100 parameters.
Is there any easy method to do it using a class or any other methods?
Thanking you in advance,
Tomy
Calling A Stored Procedure Inside Another Stored Procedure (or Nested Stored Procedures)
Nov 1, 2007
Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly.  For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?
FROM LabTests
ORDER BY LabTests.Result DESC
GO
(2) /////--spTopSixAnalytesEXEC.sql--//////////////
USE ssmsExpressDB
GO
EXEC spTopSixAnalytes
I executed them and got the following results in SSMSE:
TopSixAnalytes Unit AnalyteName
1 222.10 ug/Kg Acetone
2 220.30 ug/Kg Acetone
3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone
4 140.30 ug/L Acetone
5 120.70 ug/L Acetone
6 90.70 ug/L Acetone
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I try to use this Stored Procedure in my ADO.NET-VB 2005 Express programming:
//////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")
Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)
sqlDataAdapter.SelectCommand.Command.Type = CommandType.StoredProcedure
'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor
'of the DataSet class.
Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")
sqlConnection.Open()
sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)
sqlConnection.Close()
End Sub
End Class
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors:
Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)
Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang
More Information for you to know:
I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.
SQL Server 2014 :: Embed Parameter In Name Of Stored Procedure Called From Within Another Stored Procedure?
I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?
System Stored Procedure Call From Within My Database Stored Procedure
I have a stored procedure that calls a msdb stored procedure internally. I granted the login execute rights on the outer sproc but it still vomits when it tries to execute the inner. Says I don't have the privileges, which makes sense.
How can I grant permissions to a login to execute msdb.dbo.sp_update_schedule()? Or is there a way I can impersonate the sysadmin user for the call by using Execute As sysadmin some how?
Ad Hoc Query Vs Stored Procedure Performance Vs DTS Execution Of Stored Procedure
Jan 23, 2008
Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio
What could explain this?
Obviously,
All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.
Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).
The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes
Exec Twp Stored Procedure In A Main Stored Procedure
Apr 29, 2004
Hi there
i have a stored procedure like this:
CREATE PROCEDURE SP_Main
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
BEGIN TRANSACTION
exec SP_Sub_One output
exec SP_Sub_Two output
IF @@ERROR = 0
BEGIN
-- Success. Commit the transaction.
Commit Tran
END
ELSE
Rollback Tran
return
GO
now the problem is, when i execute the stored procedure's inside the main stored procedure, and these sub sp's has an error on it, the main stored procedure doesnt rollback the transation.
now i can put the "begin transation" in the two sub stored procedure's. The problem is
what if the first "SP_Sub_One" executed successfully, and there was error in "SP_Sub_Two"
now the "SP_Sub_One" has been executed and i cant rollback it... the error occured in the
"SP_Sub_Two" stored procedure ... so it wont run ... so there will be error in the data
how can i make a mian "BEGIN TRANSACTION" , that even it include the execution of stored procedure in it.
Thanks in advance
RETURNS TABLE
AS
RETURN SELECT Settings.TTL FROM Settings WHERE Enabled='true'
This is my stored procedure:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.DeleteSetByTime
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @TTL int
SET @TTL = dbo.TTLValue()
DELETE FROM SetValues WHERE CreatedTime > dateadd(minute, @TTL, CreatedTime)
END
CreatedTime is a datetime column and TTL is an integer column.
I tried calling it by dbo.TTLValue(), dbo.MyDatabase.TTLValue(), [dbo].[MyDatabase].[TTLValue]() and TTLValue(). The last returned an error when saving it "'TTLValue' is not a recognized built-in function name". Can anybody tell me how to call this function from my stored procedure? Also, if anybody knows of a good book or site with tutorials on how to become a pro in T-SQL I will appreciate it.
Your help is much appreciated.
Execute Stored Procedure From Stored Procedure With Parameters
May 16, 2008
Hello,
I am hoping there is a solution within SQL that work for this instead of making round trips from the front end. I have a stored procedure that is called from the front-end(USP_DistinctBalancePoolByCompanyCurrency) that accepts two parameters and returns one column of data possibly several rows. I have a second stored procedure(USP_BalanceDateByAccountPool) that accepts the previous stored procedures return values. What I would like to do is call the first stored procedure from the front end and return the results from the second stored procedure. Since it's likely I will have more than row of data, can I loop the second passing each value returned from the first?
The Stored Procs are:
CREATE PROCEDURE USP_DistinctBalancePoolByCompanyCurrency
@CID int,
@CY char(3)
AS
SELECT Distinct S.BalancePoolName
FROM SiteRef S
INNER JOIN Account A ON A.PoolId=S.ID
Inner JOIN AccountBalance AB ON A.Id = AB.AccountId
Inner JOIN AccountPool AP On AP.Id=A.PoolId
Where A.CompanyId=@CID And AB.Currency=@CY
CREATE PROCEDURE USP_BalanceDateByAccountPool
@PoolName varchar(50)
AS
Declare @DT datetime
Select @DT=
(Select MAX(AccountBalance.DateX) From Company Company
INNER JOIN Account Account ON Company.Id = Account.CompanyId
INNER JOIN SiteRef SiteRef ON Account.PoolId = SiteRef.ID
Inner JOIN AccountBalance AccountBalance ON Account.Id = AccountBalance.AccountId
WHERE SiteRef.BalancePoolName = @PoolName)
SELECT SiteRef.BalancePoolName, AccountBalance.DateX, AccountBalance.Balance
FROM Company Company
INNER JOIN Account Account ON Company.Id = Account.CompanyId
INNER JOIN SiteRef SiteRef ON Account.PoolId = SiteRef.ID
Inner JOIN AccountBalance AccountBalance ON Account.Id = AccountBalance.AccountId
WHERE SiteRef.BalancePoolName = @PoolName And AccountBalance.DateX = @DT
Order By AccountBalance.DateX DESC
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dave
Calculated Fields In Queries Using Stored Procedures
Dec 20, 1999
Help!
I have converted my Access Jet database to a SQL Server database. In Access, I had many functions that I created to use in my queries. SQL Server does not allow for functions to be created. So, I had to create procedures in SQL Server to perform what my functions did.
I am trying to use the procedures I created on calculated fields within my SQL statement in my view. It returns an error stating that the procedure is not recognized.
How can I create functions to be used in my query?
Thanks.
Validation Of Returned Order Of Fields From A Stored Proc
Jul 17, 2006
Hi,
Can we validate the returned order of fields from a stored procedure? Infact, i am taking a query as user input and extracts the results based on the query but for that order of fields specified in a query is important.
Can i check the order after the query is run i.e if this is entered "select field1,field2,field3 from table" then i need to check the order of the resultset generated. I can't check the query before the resultset is generated because a user can enter bunch of queries.
Any way will work, tsql or .net app.
Thanks,
Problem In Stored Procedures When I Change The Name Of The Tables Of Fields
Oct 5, 2004
Hi My friends
I have develop big Database System in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and my DB System content more then 30 Table and also more then 150 Stored procedure and from that stored procedures I have call my the tables
But the problem when I change the name of any table, SQL Server don’t prompt my about the stored procedure that use that table .. so I cant remember witch Stored procedure use that table
By example if I am in programming language like C# or VB.NET when I try to change any name of any class the compiles catch all the error that coming from changing the name of the class and simply I will fix the problem because the compiler help me and list all the object content the error
But in SQL Server how can I search for stored procedure that use un existing table like compiler in any programming language ??
Or is there any why to solve my problem ??
And the above problem also there when I change the filed name
And thanks with my best regards
Stored Procedure In Database X, Executes Stored Procedure In Database Y, Wrapped In Transaction?
Jul 20, 2005
Is it possible to execute a stored procedure in one database, which thenitself executes a stored procedure from another database? We have decide tosplit our data into a tree structure (DB1) and data blobs (DB2) (we areusing MSDE and we have a 2gb limit with each DB so we've done it this wayfor that reason). I would like to, say, execute a stored procedure in DB1,passing in the data blob and other details, DB1 will create a tree node inDB1 and then add the blob record to DB2. DB1 will wrap in a transaction ofcourse, as will DB2 when it adds the blob. Is this possible?
TableAdapter Can't See Stored Proc Returned Fields When Using Temp Table
Apr 16, 2007
Hi,
Summary: When my stored procedure uses temporary tables then the TableAdapter won't be able to work out the field names and so won't work. I get an error in the TableAdapter configure wizard saying: Invalid object name '#TempTable'.
I'm not doing anything unusual so this must be a common problem. Let me explain:
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2000.
Detail: I've written a new stored procedure (SP)  that uses a temporary table in calculating the resulting results set (several fields with several rows). I recon the temporary table bit is significant.
I've created a new DataSet in VS2005 and dragged the stored proc onto the DataSet design surface.
I right click on the TableAdapter and enter the 'configure'. The problem is that the wizard doesn't think any fields are being returned by the SP.
If I try and do it another way I get the same problem: Right click on DataSet and add new TableAdapter (same thing happens, it won't recognise that there are fields being returned from the SP).
FYI: If I do it for an SP that doesn't use any temporary tables it all works like a dream (problem is that I need to use temporary tables as its complex   ).
Thanks for any advise
