Stored Procedure - Ntext Error
May 3, 2006
I have the stored procedure snipet below that will work for returning a dataset that I need.
But, if I change NVARCHAR to NTEXT as the field response is, I get the error:
The text, ntext, and image data types are invalid for local variables.
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.mySP
@errCode INT OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @guid uniqueidentifier
DECLARE @response NVARCHAR
SELECT @guid = guid, @response = response FROM myTable
SELECT guid, response
FROM myTable
Like is said, seems to work ok for now, but what if the info in the field is bigger than 4000 length as the max nvarchar can handle?
Thanks,
Zath

Greetings all! I'm writing a small content management program for a website that I'm putting together. One of the critical aspects of this projects is that users want to be able to cut n' paste from Word in to a FreeTextBox control and save it to the database. Well, we've run in to some problems. These entries are running well over 4000 characters, and I'm going to have to use an ntext datatype in order to the field to accomodate the amount of text they want to post.
My input stored procedures work great and it's dumping it well in to the table. But the problem I'm having is with the output. Apparently, you can't pass the values to an output parameter or reference the field directly in a stored procedure. I've scoured the internet and purchased several books just to deal with this issue. Can someone point me in the right direction or offer some examples of getting ntext data out through a stored procedure? I'm in a real squeeze here.
TIA
Matt

Hello everybody,
i have a problem with copying (read it from one row and set it to another) a ntext field in a stored procedure. I know how
to get a pointer to the data and how to read from it.
But i want to copy the whole data.
Does anybody know how to do that?
Thanks in advance

Can someone help me with this issue? I am trying to update a record using a sp. The db table has an identity column. I seem to have set up everything correctly for Gridview and SqlDataSource but have no clue where my additional, phanton arguments are being generated. If I specify a custom statement rather than the stored procedure in the Data Source configuration wizard I have no problem. But if I use a stored procedure I keep getting the error "Procedure or function <sp name> has too many arguments specified." But thing is, I didn't specify too many parameters, I specified exactly the number of parameters there are. I read through some posts and saw that the gridview datakey fields are automatically passed as parameters, but when I eliminate the ID parameter from the sp, from the SqlDataSource parameters list, or from both (ID is the datakey field for the gridview) and pray that .net somehow knows which record to update -- I still get the error. I'd like a simple solution, please, as I'm really new to this. What is wrong with this picture? Thank you very much for any light you can shed on this.

I am running this query to an sql server 2000 database from my aspcode:"select * from MyTable whereMySqlServerRemoveStressFunction(MyNtextColumn) = '" &MyAdoRemoveStressFunction(MyString) & "'"The problem is that the replace function doesn't work with the ntextdatatype (so as to replace the stresses with an empty string). I hadto implement the MySqlServerRemoveStressFunction, i.e. a function thattakes a column name as a parameter and returns the text contained inthis column having replaced some letters of the text (the letters withstress). Unfortunately, I could not do that because user-definedfunctions cannot return a value of ntext.So I have the following idea:"select * from MyTable whereCheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStesses(MyNtextColum n, '" & MyString &"')"How can I implement the CheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStessesfunction? (I don't know how to combine these functions to do what Iwant: TEXTPTR, UPDATETEXT, WRITETEXT, READTEXT)

I have a third party application with a ntext field that I need to parse the data out of. The data looks like this:
<xmlF><FNumber type="int">2421</FNumber><AttachmentPath type="string" /><RequesterId type="int">232</RequesterId><Requester type="string">John Smith</Requester><RequestDate type="DateTime">3/24/2008 11:23:27 AM</RequestDate</xmlF>
The fieldname is Data and the tablename is ProcessData
Again, this looks like xml, but the field type is ntext. I would like to create a view displaying the parsed data in fields. How would I go about parsing the data?
Thanks.

Yo people, got a little problem with this stored procedure, i go to save it and it kicks out these errors:
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'Drop'.Incorrect syntax near 'Go'.Incorrect syntax near 'Go'.'CREATE/ALTER PROCEDURE' must be the first statement in the query batch
I dont no about this sort of stuff so a good break down of what wrong would be good, below is the whole procedure.
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.SQLDataSource1
Drop Table PersonGo
Create Table Person
(PersonID Int Identity,
PersonEmail Varchar(255),PersonName Varchar(255),
PersonSex Char(1),PersonDOB DateTime,
PersonImage Image,PersonImageType Varchar(255)
)
Drop Proc sp_person_isp
Go
Create Proc sp_person_isp
@PersonEmail Varchar(255),@PersonName Varchar(255),
@PersonSex Char(1),@PersonDOB DateTime,

I have the following code in my code behind page:
Dim CN = New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("connectionstring"))
Dim CM As New SqlCommand("spCCF_CrossTab", CN)
CM.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
CM.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@LocationID", "CCFIF"))
CM.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@BeginDate", dtbStart.Text))
CM.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@EndDate", dtbEnd.Text))
CN.Open()
DR = CM.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
dgReport.DataSource = DR
dgReport.DataBind()
A SQL exception is thrown: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'END'
But I turned on tracing in Enterprise Manager, the following request is sent to SQL:
exec spCCF_CrossTab @LocationID = N'CCFIF', @BeginDate = N'11/3/2003', @EndDate = N'11/4/2003'
In query analyzer the above line executes without error and returns the expected information.
My stored procedure is:
CREATE PROCEDURE spCCF_CrossTab

I've been banging my head on this for quite some time now, any insight someone might have as to the problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Then I created an ObjectDataSource which binds the GridView control. However, I am getting the following error: Incorrect syntax near ')'After playing around with it, the error is from the line:ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY ' + @SortExpression + ') AS RowNumber FROM Users)If I change the line to ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY UserID') AS RowNumber FROM Users) it works fine, except for sorting.I dont understand what I might be doing wrong.

I am writing a stored procedure where I am adding a column to a table, doing some manipulation using the new column and then deleting the column. The problem is when I try to save the stored procedure, it gives me an error because it cannot find the new field on the table. How can I tell SQL to not compile a section or whole stored procedure?
Thanks,

Periodically, while running a stored procedure from a VB front end, I get the error 08501, General Connection Failure.
This application is not being used by anyone else, but no one else running other apps on the same server has a problem.
Additionally a symptom dump is produced followed by a message that 'The current contents of process'input buffer are' sp_cursoropen'.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
