Louis writes "Is it possibble to write a SQL statement that returns "True" or "False" if a stored procedure exists. Basically write a SQL statement that checks whether or not the Stored Procedure exist in the database???
Hi,In my stored procedure I would like to do something like :IF EXISTS(SELECT WebIdFROM WebsWHERE FormatDateId = @FormatDateId)BEGINSELECT WebIdFROM WebsWHERE FormatDateId = @FormatDateIdSET @RetVal = -1ENDIs there a nicer way to do this, so that we don't have to do therequest twice ?Regards
When I created an SP in Enterprise Manager, I didn't manually type in the existence check at the inception, a la "if exists (select * from sysobjects...)". I just started with the CREATE PROC AS statement.
I noticed that if I generate a SQL script for the SP, SQL2000 automatically generates the existence check statement.
My question is, can I assume that when the SP is actually executed, SQL2000 does the exists check on its own? I EXEC'd the proc in Query Analyzer with no errors.
I just want to make sure that I don't need to enter the exists statement if it's already being done behind the scenes.
I'm trying to put scripts to create our stored procedures under version control.
However I don't want these scripts to be run if the stored procedure already exists (we'll be using update scripts to alter existing stored procedure I think).
Anyway I tried :
Code:
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO
/****** Object: Stored Procedure dbo.getEnglandHotelsByATOPResort Script Date: 26/10/2005 10:40:01 ******/ if NOT EXISTS (SELECT object_id('procedureName','p')) CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[procedureName] @location char(2) AS ...Procedure...
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO
I know that the if NOT EXISTS ... part works as doing the following returns the expected result :
Code:
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT object_id('procedureName','p')) SELECT 'FALSE' ELSE SELECT 'TRUE'
However when trying to do this before the CREATE PROCEDURE I get :
Server: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 4 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'PROCEDURE'. Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 12 Must declare the variable '@location'.
Hey,I'm writing some automated unit tests for a database app. The appcreates a database via script. I'm developing the system in atest-driven manner and need a way to determine if a parameter existswithin a stored procedure using SQL. Any ideas?Thanks,WillJoin Bytes!
I'm writing some code to create stored procedures in a database. In order to test it out, I deleted a stored procedure (right clicking in SQL Server 2008 and clicking on delete) and then ran my code to see if it would create it.
My code looks like this:
Code: SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(); SqlConnection conn = database.TypeLibraryDatabaseConnection; command.Connection = conn; // create the command to create the stored procedure command.CommandText = database.GetProcedure(node.Name); // create the stored proc in the database try { command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } catch { } command.Dispose();
database.GetProcedure(node.name) basically gets a string containing the SQL script to create the stored procedure.
command.ExecuteNonQuery() throws an SqlException that says: "There is already an object named 'SecuritySession_DeleteSessionById' in the
database." But I deleted it! Why does it think it's still there?
I Have a nifty little stored procedure that takes data from an ASP form post and inserts the data into two tables. However what I really need this to do before the insert is check whether there is already a record that matches some of the criteria, and if so returns an error "This Username already exists" and only if there isn't a record that matches the criteria is the record inserted.
my current stored procedure looks like this -
Code Snippet@siteid int,@companyname nvarchar(50),@address nvarchar(500),@phone nvarchar(50),@fax nvarchar(50),@email nvarchar(225),@url nvarchar(225),@companytype nvarchar(50),@billingcontact nvarchar(50),@name nvarchar(50),@AccountType nvarchar(50),@PASSWORD nvarchar(50),@AccountLive nvarchar(50),@EmployeeLevel nvarchar(50)ASDeclare @NewID INTINSERT INTO dbo.JBClient(JBCLSiteID, JBCLName, JBCLAddress, JBCLPhone, JBCLFax, JBCLEmail, JBCLCompanyType, JBCLURL, JBCLAccountType, JBCLAccountlive, JBCLBillingContact)VALUES (@siteid, @companyname, @address, @phone, @fax, @email, @companytype, @url, @AccountType, @AccountLive, @billingcontact)SELECT @NewID = SCOPE_IDENTITY()INSERT INTO dbo.JBEmployee(JBEClientID, JBESiteID, JBEName, JBELevel, JBEUsername, JBEPassword, JBEAddress, JBEPhone)VALUES (@NewID, @siteid, @name, @EmployeeLevel, @email, @PASSWORD, @address, @phone) The values that i need to check against are -
@siteid @email
in the table dbo.JBEmployee against columns JBESiteID & JBEUsername
What i would really like to do if a record exists is return the user to an ASP page, which contains all of the variables previously enterred -,
I want to insert data calling a stored procedure and call this from a Data Flow destination object. Is it possible?
I understand that Ole Db Command transformation object can call stored procedure, but that will not rollback in the event of error in the middle.
I understand that Ole Db Destination object will rollback in middle of import, but I don't see how to do the insert by calling stored procedure. "Sql Command" option in Ole Db Destination object does not seem to present solution to the problem.
Am I missing something here or is Ssis / Microsoft demanding that Insert stored procedure not be used when using Data Flow destination object to insert data into target table?
Hey all - got a problem that seems like it would be simple (and probably is : )
I'm importing a csv file into a SQL 2005 table and would like to add 2 columns that exist in the table but not in the csv file. I need these 2 columns to contain the current month and year (columns are named CM and CY respectively). How do I go about adding this data to each row during the transformation? A derived column task? Script task? None of these seem to be able to do this for me.
Here's a portion of the transformation script I was using to accomplish this when we were using SQL 2000 DTS jobs:
' Copy each source column to the destination column Function Main() DTSDestination("CM") = Month(Now) DTSDestination("CY") = Year(Now) DTSDestination("Comments") = DTSSource("Col031") DTSDestination("Manufacturer") = DTSSource("Col030") DTSDestination("Model") = DTSSource("Col029") DTSDestination("Last Check-in Date") = DTSSource("Col028") Main = DTSTransformStat_OK End Function *********************************************************** Hopefully this question isnt answered somewhere else, but I did a quick search and came up with nothing. I've actually tried to utilize the script component and the "Row" object, but the only properties I'm given with that are the ones from the source data.
I am using the following code to insert records into a destination tablethat has a three column primary key i.e. (PupilID, TermID &SubjectGroup). The source table records all the pupils in a school with(amongst other things) a column (about 50) for each subject the pupilmight potentially sit. In these columns are recorded the study groupthat they belong to for those subjects. The destination table holds arecord per pupil per subject per term, against which the teacher willultimately record the pupils performance.The code as shown runs perfectly until the operator tries to insert aselection of records that include some that already exist. What I wouldlike it to do is, record those, which do not exist and discard theremainder. However, whenever a single duplicate occurs SQL rejects thewhole batch. I know that my solution will probably involve using the‘NOT EXISTS’ expression, but try as I might I cannot get it to work. Tofurther complicate things, the code is being run from within VBA usingthe RunSQL command.The variables ‘strFieldName’, ‘strGroup’ & ‘strTerm are declared at thestart of the procedure and originate from options selected on an Accessform.INSERT INTO dbo.yInterimReportData (PupilID, LastName, FirstName,TermID, SubjectGroup) SELECT PupilID, LastName, FirstName," & "'" &strTerm & "'" & "," & "'" & strGroup & "'" & "FROM dbo.Pupils WHERE (" &strFieldName & " = " & "'" & strGroup & "')Any Ideas?RegardsColin*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***
I'm trying to create a batch sql script which first alters some existing tables via the ALTER TABLE command, I then want to alter some existing stored procedures via the ALTER PROCEDURE command within the same batch. I have found that I can encompas the alter table scripts within a conditional IF EXISTS (Begin/End) but not the alter procesdure scripts. I have looked in reference material and have found nothing to suggest this type of operation is not possible. Is this possible? Is this a know bug fixed by a service pack?
Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created' returns an int value as 1 (performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created') but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie: exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1' which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc): SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example). My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert). Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?
I executed them and got the following results in SSMSE: TopSixAnalytes Unit AnalyteName 1 222.10 ug/Kg Acetone 2 220.30 ug/Kg Acetone 3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone 4 140.30 ug/L Acetone 5 120.70 ug/L Acetone 6 90.70 ug/L Acetone ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Now, I try to use this Stored Procedure in my ADO.NET-VB 2005 Express programming: //////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////
Public Class Form1

Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")
Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)
'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor
'of the DataSet class.
Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")
sqlConnection.Open()
sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)
sqlConnection.Close()
End Sub
End Class ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors: Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb) Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb) Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb) Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)
Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance, Scott Chang
More Information for you to know: I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly. I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.
I have a stored proc with a query which checks whether an identical value is already in the database table. If so, it returns a value of 1. How do I caputure this value in an asp.net page in order to display a message accordingly? (using ASP.NET 1.1)
Currently my stored proc looks something like this (snippet only): If Exists( SELECT mydoc WHERE.... ) Return 1 Else ...INSERT INTO.... code here.

I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[runDMQ3_2014LDLComplete] @QQ_YYYY char(7), @YYYYQQ char(8) AS begin SET NOCOUNT ON; select [provider group],provider, NPI, [01-Total Patients with DM], [02-Total DM Patients with LDL],
is is posible to execute a stored proc (with parameters) from an OLE DB Destination ??
reason we are trying this is cos
our current setup is an OLE DB Command doing the first database update and then passing over to an OLE DB Destination that does the second update. There is error handling coming off the OLE DB Command to a Script component that passes to an OLE DB Destination.
we are having a problem getting the error reporting working from the OLE DB Command - the updates work fine - but not getting any updates of the error database when there is an error.
have got the error reporting fine on the OLE DB Destination.
if we can execute the stored proc from the OLE DB Destination, we will then do both updates via one stored procedure executed by the OLE DB Destination.
thx
m
n.b. think the updating of the error logs from the OLE DB Command used to work - but cant get it to work now ??!!!!??
I have a sub that passes values from my form to my stored procedure. The stored procedure passes back an @@IDENTITY but I'm not sure how to grab that in my asp page and then pass that to my next called procedure from my aspx page. Here's where I'm stuck: Public Sub InsertOrder() Conn.Open() cmd = New SqlCommand("Add_NewOrder", Conn) cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure ' pass customer info to stored proc cmd.Parameters.Add("@FirstName", txtFName.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@LastName", txtLName.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@AddressLine1", txtStreet.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@CityID", dropdown_city.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@Zip", intZip.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@EmailPrefix", txtEmailPre.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@EmailSuffix", txtEmailSuf.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhoneAreaCode", txtPhoneArea.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhonePrefix", txtPhonePre.Text) cmd.Parameters.Add("@PhoneSuffix", txtPhoneSuf.Text) ' pass order info to stored proc cmd.Parameters.Add("@NumberOfPeopleID", dropdown_people.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@BeanOptionID", dropdown_beans.SelectedValue) cmd.Parameters.Add("@TortillaOptionID", dropdown_tortilla.SelectedValue) 'Session.Add("FirstName", txtFName.Text) cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() cmd = New SqlCommand("Add_EntreeItems", Conn) cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.Parameters.Add("@CateringOrderID", get identity from previous stored proc) <------------------------- Dim li As ListItem Dim p As SqlParameter = cmd.Parameters.Add("@EntreeID", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar) For Each li In chbxl_entrees.Items If li.Selected Then p.Value = li.Value cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() End If Next Conn.Close()I want to somehow grab the @CateringOrderID that was created as an end product of my first called stored procedure (Add_NewOrder) and pass that to my second stored procedure (Add_EntreeItems)
I have a stored procedure and in that I will be calling a stored procedure. Now, based on the parameter value I will get stored procedure name to be executed. how to execute dynamic sp in a stored rocedure
at present it is like EXECUTE usp_print_list_full @ID, @TNumber, @ErrMsg OUTPUT
I want to do like EXECUTE @SpName @ID, @TNumber, @ErrMsg OUTPUT
I have a stored procedure that calls a msdb stored procedure internally. I granted the login execute rights on the outer sproc but it still vomits when it tries to execute the inner. Says I don't have the privileges, which makes sense.
How can I grant permissions to a login to execute msdb.dbo.sp_update_schedule()? Or is there a way I can impersonate the sysadmin user for the call by using Execute As sysadmin some how?
Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior: 1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio 2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio
What could explain this?
Obviously,
All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.
Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).
The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+) The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query) The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes
I am trying to debug stored procedure using visual studio. I right click on connection and checked 'Allow SQL/CLR debugging' .. the store procedure is not local and is on sql server.
Whenever I tried to right click stored procedure and select step into store procedure> i get following error
"User 'Unknown user' could not execute stored procedure 'master.dbo.sp_enable_sql_debug' on SQL server XXXXX. Click Help for more information"
I am not sure what needs to be done on sql server side
We tried to search for sp_enable_sql_debug but I could not find this stored procedure under master.
Some web page I came accross says that "I must have an administratorial rights to debug" but I am not sure what does that mean?
I have a stored procedure 'ChangeUser' in which there is a call to another stored procedure 'LogChange'. The transaction is started in 'ChangeUser'. and the last statement in the transaction is 'EXEC LogChange @p1, @p2'. My questions is if it would be correct to check in 'LogChange' the following about this transaction: 'IF @@trancount >0 BEGIN Rollback tran' END Else BEGIN Commit END. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Hi,I am getting error when I try to call a stored procedure from another.
