Storing Documents And Images - In The Database Or As A Link?

Jul 20, 2005

Hi There,Being quite new to MS-SQL I would like to ask if there is a general opinionof what approach should be taken to storing things like external documentsand images in databases.Should the actual files be stored within the database, or instead shouldlinks to the files on a file server or something similar be stored instead.For the end user I imagine it is easier to have everything stored within thedatabase, because doing it the other way in effect gives another level ofmanagement because there is the need to perhaps manually look after the fileserver with all the image files or document files on.In my particular case, I am building a database where the users use a greatmany Word documents. For example, I particular record might have a number ofdifferent Word documents associated with it.I was going to create a "Documents" table that all documents were stored in(including meta data about each document because it will be really useful tobe able to search for documents so that they can be reused).In this table I was in a dilemma as to whether to actually store thedocuments in the table. Other then the performance hit and memoryrequirements this will require, are there any other disadvantages?What are the general thoughts when a database needs to manage a lot of pdfand word documents?Thanks in advance.Dave.

Storing Large Formatted Documents

Jun 8, 2006

I am developing a resume storage system, and don't know the best way to store the resumes that come in to our company in both MS Word and text files. Should I store the files in the original format they come in, and reference the file name in the databse that points to a directory where they are stored, or should I store the text of the resumes directy in the database. There are 2 things that I must follow.

1: I need to have the documents keep their formatting.
2: I also need the capibility of conducting a full text search to pull out key words from the documents.

What is the best way?

Urgent: Storing MS-Word Documents In Sql Server

Oct 17, 2004

Hi,

I have developed a Job Registration page, in which, the resume attached will be stored in the database in an image data-type field. Now, the client program includes migration of the database into local server and process the resumes.

After migration to the local database, if the client wants to process the resume and save directly to the database again, is it possible? This a very urgent requirement. Currently, i am separating the resume from the database and storing in a folder with the ID as the file name. But i want to convert it to a distributed application, which needs the resume to be in the database itself.

Can anybody suggest me the method to open .doc file from the database, process it and save directly to the database?

Thanks and regards,
mrc

Storing Unsaved Word Documents As BLOBs

Jul 20, 2005

Hi folks,I want to be able to store and retrieve UNSAVED Word documents as BLOBs. Igot all the info for storing them if they're already saved on the filesystem. But what if they're not already saved? I could save them to a tempfile first and then make it a blob, but I'd rather not put them on the filesystem at all. I could use Document.Contents to get the Range object for thewhole doc and then BLOB that, but I'm not sure that would be quite the sameas a .doc file, maybe things like Styles and the like would be missing.TIA!Dave

Excel 2007 Documents Not Displayed In Windows XP Professional Sp2 Start Menu Recent Documents List

Jan 26, 2007

Excel 2007 Documents Not Displayed in Windows XP Professional sp2
Start Menu's Recent Documents List:

Dear Microsoft Support:
I can't figure out how to get recently used Excel 2007 (new file formats) documents to show up in the Windows XP Professional (sp2) Start Menu's Recent Documents List. I checked the Internet, the knowledgebase, many parts of the MS web site, etc. for an answer but can't find one.
Are Excel 2007 documents supposed to show up in the XP Start Menu's Recent Document List? Is this a bug or do I have to do some sort of configuration to make it do so? If it's a bug, when will a fix be available?

Are these new Excel 2007 files filtered out like EXE files are which will not appear in the Recent Document List?

The Excel 2007 file types are listed in the Registry.

This question is also posted on Experts-Exchange...No solutions yet.

Thanks.

Jim.

Which Is Better? Storing Data In The Database OR Storing It In The File System

Dec 29, 2006

Hello there,I just want to ask if storing data in dbase is much better than storing it in the file system? Because for one, i am currenlty developing my thesis which uploads a blob.doc file to a web server (currently i'm using the localhost of ASP.NET) then retrieves it from the local hostAlso i want to know if im right at this, the localhost of ASP.NET is the same as the one of a natural web server on the net? Because i'm just thinking of uploading and downloading the files from a web server. Although our thesis defense didn't require us to really upload it on the net, we were advised to use a localhost on our PC's. I'll be just using my local server Is it ok to just use a web server for storing files than a database?

SQL Server 2008 :: Storing Column Value To A Column

Sep 9, 2015

I just have a question regarding storing values to a column in ms sql 2008.

Why is it that the value I inserted at the column is truncated when selected in a query.

The column for this is created to accept max. values.

-> Message VARCHAR(MAX) NULL

The string which I need to insert is a combination of characters with a length of 14,720.

According to some forums, the max value that a column can hold is 8000 chars. only (Is this true? even though I set it to MAX?)

Hi Everyone,
I have a simple webform with a text box with multiline enabled and a submit button, in vb.net.  Inside the text box, when you are typing text with let's say adding carriage returns, spaces etc.  How to i save the text to a database?  By that, i mean, how to i declare the column in my database, varchar, text ...?
Also, when retrieving the saved text back to the textbox, will it keep the formatting because that's what i am trying to do?  Or, what is the best way to keep text formatting in a database?
Thanks for the help,

Designing A Database Within A Database... Design Question Storing Data...

Jul 23, 2005

I have a system that basically stores a database within a database (I'msure lots have you have done this before in some form or another).At the end of the day, I'm storing the actual data generically in acolumn of type nvarchar(4000), but I want to add support for unlimitedtext. I want to do this in a smart fashion. Right now I am leaningtowards putting 2 nullable Value fields:ValueLong ntext nullableValueShort nvarchar(4000) nullableand dynamically storing the info in one or the other depending on thesize. ASP.NET does this exact very thing in it's Session State model;look at the ASPStateTempSessions table. This table has both aSessionItemShort of type varbinary (7000) and a SessionItemLong of typeImage.My question is, is it better to user varbinary (7000) and Image? I'mthinking maybe I should go down this path, simply because ASP.NET does,but I don't really know why. Does anyone know what would be the benifitof using varbinary and Image datatypes? If it's just to allow saving ofbinary data, then I don't really need that right now (and I don't thinkASP.NET does either). Are there any other reasons?thanks,dave

Are There No Computed Column Types? For Storing Expressions (results Of Other Fields)

Jun 4, 2006

I just read something interesting here: http://www.informit.com/library/content.asp?b=STY_Sql_Server_7&seqNum=101

A column type that helds an expression, and in queries returns the results.

That sounds excelent in my database, to save some code in my client applications. E.g adding price totals, and taxes of an order.

I can't find any info about this in later versions of SQL server. Is this not possible anymore?

Storing XML In Database

best way to store questionnaire data in a database.Since different questionnairs have different questions and formats i.e dropdown, radio, checkboxes etc building such a database model becomes highly complex.

I've read that if data schema is complex and higly variable it may be better to use an xml document and store that in a databse. However I dont quite understand how you store xml to a database. Do you simply store the entire structure in something like a nvarchar column or is there some other way to store xml to a database.

If you store the entire structure to the databse then how do you query the content to generate reports.

example xml:

Code:
<survey>

<id>sample</id>

<questions>
<question id="1" type="singlechoice" page="1">

Storing Images In A Database

Oct 6, 2005

An odd question from me, I know, but this time, I assure you a twist.

I have a group that wants to store images in either a database or a file share, in order to make a certain website able to run on a load balanced web farm. These images are around 1KB each in size, and have a lifespan of exactly one use (think of graphs). I went a-googling, and found no shortage of articles that say "don't do it, but here's how you can do it", but I did not find any real hard statements as to why to not do it. Needless to say, this is hurting the case for not putting these images in the database. I have found an article that says images over 8KB will have worse performance, but I can not use that factoid here. For the moment, I have the developers leaning toward the fileshare, because they will be writing transaction logs all day, which will be more work than the fileshare needs to do....I think. The best I can do, is cut the text/image datatype overhead, and have them create the table as varbinary(2000), but even then, I don't like the look of the idea.

Anyone out there have good articles/whitepapers that detail the differences between writing single-use images to a fileshare vs. a SQL database? <baiting=blatant>Failing that, do any of the Microsoft development team have an opinion?</baiting>

Alternatively, what is the general opinion of keeping session state information in a database (because I bet that will be my next battle). I see .NET includes a session state server, but not being a programmer, I can not create an opbjective test.

Storing SMS To My SQL Database..help Guys!!!

May 8, 2007

i use a teltonika t-modem gsm modem..

it's quite new actually and it is connected to my PC thru a usb port..

my problem now is that

i can,t seem to get the hang in storing received messages in

my SQL database..

the code goes like this..

a receive button is clicked to generate an instance

where all SMS sent to my sim card would then be accessed by my gsm modem..

private void btnReceive_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

ListViewItem Component;

Cursor c = Cursor.Current;

Cursor.Current = Cursors.WaitCursor;

listView1.Items.Clear();

btnReceive.Enabled = false;

objGsmIn.Device = cmbDevice.SelectedItem.ToString();

objGsmIn.LogFile = txtLogging.Text;

if (cmbDeviceSpeed.SelectedIndex == 0)

{

objGsmIn.DeviceSpeed = 0;

}

else

{

objGsmIn.DeviceSpeed = System.Int32.Parse(cmbDeviceSpeed.Text);

}

objGsmIn.Storage = fMsgStore.MsgStorage;

if (fMsgStore.DelMsg == true)

{//deletes your message after receiving

objGsmIn.DeleteAfterReceive = 1;

}

objGsmIn.Receive(); //this checks your new incoming messages

if (objGsmIn.LastError == 0)

{

objGsmIn.GetFirstMessage();

while (objGsmIn.LastError == 0)

{

//continously receive all messages..

Component = listView1.Items.Add(objGsmIn.MessageSender);

Component.SubItems.Add(objGsmIn.MessageData);

objGsmIn.GetNextMessage();

}

txtResults.Text = "Messages Successfully Received..";

}

else

{

//error in message receiving process..

txtResults.Text = "Error " + objGsmIn.LastError + "(" + objGsmIn.GetErrorDescription(objGsmIn.LastError) + ")";

}

btnReceive.Enabled = true;

Cursor.Current = c;

}

now my problem is that i cant figure out where i would place my stored procedure

in storing those messages to my database..

the problem is that..

if i place my stored procedure on the 1st "IF" statement..

it will only save my 1st incoming message..

but another thing is that if i put it under my "WHILE" statement..

dont you think that it will continiously loop?

meaning to say that the next tym i tried to access all my received messages

it would definitely store all the previously read messages again to my database..

which then creates multiple copies of my previously stored messages again and again

well i hope you get the gist of what i mean..

its quite complicated to explain..

but then again thanks a lot for taking notice on my post regarding this..

thanks!!^_^

another thing..i used the active xperts c# application in order to

create this application..
