Not sure about the amount of characters that needs held but its going to be quite a lot as this field shall contain most of my pages content.

Appreciate any help

Rich Text Support

Nov 20, 2007

This question has been asked a lot, without a definitive answer. Can you tell me if SQL Server 2008 will support rich text. I believe the November CTP does not have this functionality. It is a pretty important decision regarding my organization's adoption of the new product.
Thank you

Rich Text Field

Aug 4, 2006

I currently have a simple project where we need to store paragraphs for letters that will be automatically printed and then mailed to cusomters. These letters will be created based on certain criteria.

I have the SQL database set up with two fields...the paragraphCode (which is the key) and then the paragraph. These paragraphs were originally created in Word and some of these paragraphs contain bulleting and other rich text features. I have built a small utility in ASP (using VB .Net) for our intranet to view / insert / edit these paragraphs. If a user is copying and pasting the paragraph from a Word document, what should this paragraph field's datatype be declare as? It is currently NVARCHAR(MAX).

Thanks for the information

Datatypes That Preserve Rich Text

Feb 1, 2007

Hey there - I have a textbox (C# 1.1 OR 2.0) that I want to take it's contents and post to a datatype of some sort in SQL2k5 and have it preserve the breaks (return keystrokes) so when the data is presented, it can hold a paragraph form. Is this possible?something like this: <asp:TextBox id="txtContent" runat="server" TextMode="MultiLine" Rows="10"></asp:TextBox>Right now, I'm using nvarchar(4000) as the datatype but if I were to type, say 3 paragraphs, the data returned in the datagrid I bind that data to shows only one long string of data. For the time being, I have been puttting HTML formatting tags in the content I'm posting to the DB, but ultimately don't want to have to do that. I don't want to have to use a Text Editor (like FTB or FCKeditor) if necessary because they seem very much involved for the simple need I have which is to preserve paragraph formatting. So, is there another datatype in SQL2k5 that I should be using? Or are there simple code snippets I can utilize that will recognize a carriage return as a </p><p> tag?I'm trying to migrate to 2.0 as much as possible, so any C# code would be greatly appreciated in 2.0!Thanks for your help!iSheahan

Create Rich Text From A Select And Save It In A Field

Jun 28, 2007

Hi,
I want to execute some queries inside a stored procedure, get the data and create from them some strings with formatted parts (bold, italic, underline, different color fonts) and save them in a text field. These strings are going to be displayed in some DBRichText control in a database application built with Delphi. Is there an easy way to create these complex rtf formats in MSSQL
or some ideas regarding this problem?

SSRS Newbie - How To Display Rich Text In A Report

Aug 21, 2007

Hi

(Note when I say "rich" text I don't specifically mean rich text, I'm refering to text with user defined bold, italic, numbered lists, colors, fonts, etc.)

We have a (new) system where we want a user to enter "rich" text notes into a single column using an editor embedded in our application (much like the editor I'm using for this forum) and have the notes displayed correctly in SSRS reports. We were thinking of storing the notes as HTML but I've just tried it and the report displays the whole HTML string, rather than marking up the text.

We are open to marking up the text using any mechanism, rich text, HTML, Word, etc. just as long as we can see it in the reports.

We also need to consider viewing the same notes via Crystal reports.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Storing Statistical Information

Jan 16, 2007

Hi everyone, I am storing statistics for different affiliate and merchant sites, and I have a few questions about how to store it. My first idea was to create a serializable array and store it in a statistics column with the rest of the site information.  I could even have two columns, one being an archive, and one being the current month.  I know these arrays would get quite large, but they would only be retrieved when someone was looking at the statistics.  Is this a viable way to do it? The other idea I had was to create tables for each site and ad and store the statistics as rows in each objects respective table.  While easy, I didn't know if it was a bad idea to have a very large amount of tables, ie., one for every advertisement and site signed up for the affiliate program. Thanks for all your expertise in advance and I look forward to contributing to this great community. Dave

SQL/ASP.net Storing Hours Information?

Mar 26, 2008

MS SQLJust to confirm, I need to store the number of hours a user has spent doing something, am I correct using the smalldatetime field for the MS SQL database?I will eventually need to be able to calculate totals using SQL Reporting Services so it's important that the hours add up correctly (to 60 minutes, not 100).ASP.NETI'm trying to find the correct sort of formatting to use? Short time stores the time as 9:50AM, which isn't what i'm after.I need to store the hours as in 1 hour, or 01:00:00 (1 hour, 0 minutes, 0 seconds) or just 01:00 for 1 hour. I do need minutes but seconds are not required.I can't find the right formatting for this, would Long time be more suited?

Storing Locale And Culture-information

Dec 9, 2006

Hi, I'm creating a web application with membership and such. And I have some problem figuring out how to store locale and culture data. My application needs to know the following three things for every user: country (or region), prefered language and their timezone. Now, the country and language can easily be stored as a CultureInfo string (such as "en-US" or "sv-SE"). However, i'm probably going to need two columns in my database if say a person lives in the US (and therefore applies to US registration fees, etc) but want the site displayed in swedish (my app implements global resources). So i guess (if no one objects to the above) my question is how do I store the timezone-data? There is ofcourse a System.Timezone class, but I'm not sure how to implement it. I obviously want my site to display the correct local time (all datetimes are stored as universaltime though). Is there a "universal" timezone-standard? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. /David N.

How To Compress Text Before Storing In DB?

Feb 15, 2005

I was planning on running a service where thousands of text messages are stored. Obviously I'd want to make the most of my DB space, and was wondering if there's some way for SQL to compress text down to the smallest space possible. If not, is there some kind of ASP component I could download to do this? Failing that, I could always write a simple one, which takes the most common letter combinations, and shortens them down to a single character.

Any advice?

Best Practice For Storing Long Text Fields

Sep 12, 2006

As we all know, there is a 8060 bytes size limit on SQL Server rows. Ihave a table which requires a number of text fields (5 or 6). Each ofthese text fields should support a max of 4000 characters. We currentlystore the data in varchar columns, which worked fine untill ourappetite for text fields increased to the current requirement of 5, 6fields of 4000 characters size. I am given to review a design, whichesentially suggests moving the text columns to a separate TextFieldstable. The TextFields table will have two columns - a unique referenceand a VARCHAR (4000) column, thus allowing us to crossreference withthe original record. My first impresion is that I'd rather use the SQLServer 'text' DB type instead, which would allow me the samefunctionality with much less effort and possibly better performance. Can anyone advise on advantages and disadvantages of the two optionsand what the best practice in this case would be.Any advise will be well appreciated.Tzanko

Which Is Better? Storing Data In The Database OR Storing It In The File System

Dec 29, 2006

Hello there,I just want to ask if storing data in dbase is much better than storing it in the file system? Because for one, i am currenlty developing my thesis which uploads a blob.doc file to a web server (currently i'm using the localhost of ASP.NET) then retrieves it from the local hostAlso i want to know if im right at this, the localhost of ASP.NET is the same as the one of a natural web server on the net? Because i'm just thinking of uploading and downloading the files from a web server. Although our thesis defense didn't require us to really upload it on the net, we were advised to use a localhost on our PC's. I'll be just using my local server Is it ok to just use a web server for storing files than a database?

I found this Feedback but it seems to be closed.

A temporary solution for me was to delete the meta-inf directory of the JAR-File, but that can't be the solution.

Storing SID&#39;s In SQL 7.0

Dec 16, 1999

I need to store a user ID of whoever made the last change to a record in a table. I have added a field with a default set to 'suser_sid()'.

Is it wise to store SID's in a database table if you are using NT authentication? My concerns are that if the user is deleted by the NT system administrator then I lose data integrety also if the database is backed up and restored onto a different machine with different users it won't work at all.

I'd be grateful for any help with this.

Adding A Full Text Search Across Multiple Tables (with Text Fields)

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, i'm trying to do a full text search on my site to add a weighting score to my results.  I have the following database structure:
Documents: - DocumentID (int, PK) - Title (varchar) - Content (text) - CategoryID (int, FK)
Categories: - CategoryID (int, PK) - CategoryName (varchar)
I need to create a full text index which searches the Title, Content and CategoryName fields.  I figured since i needed to search the CategoryName field i would create an indexed view.  I tried to execute the following query:
CREATE VIEW vw_DocumentsWITH SCHEMABINDING ASSELECT dbo.Documents.DocumentID, dbo.Documents.Title, dbo.Documents.[Content], dbo.Documents.CategoryID, dbo.Categories.CategoryNameFROM dbo.Categories INNER JOIN dbo.Documents ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Documents.CategoryID
GOCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX vw_DocumentsIndexON vw_Documents(DocumentID)
But this gave me the error:
Cannot create index on view 'dbname.dbo.vw_Documents'. It contains text, ntext, image or xml columns.
I tried converting the Content to a varchar(max) within my view but it still didn't like.
Appreciate if someone can tell me how this can be done as surely what i'm trying to do is not ground breaking.

SQL Server 2000 Full Text Search (extract Pieces Of Text)

Sep 12, 2007

Hello everyone !
I want to perform Full Text Search with SQL Server 2000. My documents (.doc, .xls, .txt, .pdf) are stored in a SQL Server field which is binary (the type of the column is image).
I would like to know, how you can extract pieces of text from the documents.
Example:
I have a ASPX page with codebehind in C# making the search in a table in SQL server that is full text indexed.
I make a search looking for the word "peace", than SQL server will take care about the search and return it to me the rows that match with that. But also I'd like to extract the 50 characters before and after where sql server found the word "peace" to show in the result page.
Does anyone has any idea how to work around it ?
 Best regards.
