Storing And Viewing UTF-8 Characters...

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,

I have a need to pull information from an Oracle 9.2.1 database. It is
storing UTF-8 characters in a varchar2(33) field. I need to be able to pull
these values out and put them in a SQL Server 2000 version of the table with
the UTF-8 characters intact.

Anyone know how to do this...efficiently? I've tried DTS and the high end
UTF-8 characters get lost in the copy.

Thanks,

CJ

SOVLED -- Storing Japanese Characters

Aug 17, 2007

Hi experts,

I want to store japanese characters in one of my database tables. I copied some data including japanese characters from an excel sheet and pasted it to the table. that works fine.
The characters are also nicely displayed in my web application.

But I am unable to type in new characters to the table. When trying to do so, even the windows language bar does not allow me to write japanese characters!

I changed the collation of the database from Latin1_General_CI_AS to Japanese_90_CI_AS_KS_WS. I also played with the collation settings of a single column in the table, setting it to different Japanese Windows Collations. The values in the column are stored as NVARCHAR.

The strange thing is: When I insert a new table to the database then I can enter japanese characters without modifications, the table having the same properties as the one in question (at least as far as I can see).

I am stuck here, does anybody have a hint how I can solve this issue?

Additional question: Which collation should I take?

Thanks a lot for you answers!
JJ

I was wondering does anybody have advice for storing Russian in a column in either 2000 or 2005.
Example:

create table Russian
(
Word varchar(100),
Meaning varchar(500),
Russian varchar(500) COLLATE Cyrillic_General_CI_AS_KS not null,
English varchar(1000)
)

insert into Russian
(
Word,
Meaning,
Russian,
English
)
values
(
'Thank You',
'Thank you',

'spice e ba'
)
What I get is

How can I store 'Ñ?паÑ?бо' and get this value to display, and not ??????

Storing French Characters To SQL Data Base

May 30, 2008

Hi
I find that users of my web site are using Canadian French character encoding such as ALT0233 (= é) or ALT0244 (= ô) when completing text boxes for data input on .aspx pages.
When saved to the SQL db, these characters are converted to é or ô and when retrieving the data, appear as é or ô in the text box.
The datatype in the table is nvarchar(60).
Data is saved using command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@PostingTitle", Server.HtmlEncode(Trim(Me.txtPostingTitle.Text)))
How can I save the data with the correct character inserted into the db and subsequently retreive the character.
Thanks in advance.

Which Is Better? Storing Data In The Database OR Storing It In The File System

Dec 29, 2006

Hello there,I just want to ask if storing data in dbase is much better than storing it in the file system? Because for one, i am currenlty developing my thesis which uploads a blob.doc file to a web server (currently i'm using the localhost of ASP.NET) then retrieves it from the local hostAlso i want to know if im right at this, the localhost of ASP.NET is the same as the one of a natural web server on the net? Because i'm just thinking of uploading and downloading the files from a web server. Although our thesis defense didn't require us to really upload it on the net, we were advised to use a localhost on our PC's. I'll be just using my local server Is it ok to just use a web server for storing files than a database?

Separate Lowercase Characters From Uppercase Characters

Mar 5, 2008

Hi everybody,
I would like to know if there is any property in sql2000 database to separate lowercase characters from uppercase characters. I mean not to take the values €˜child€™ and €˜Child€™ as to be the same. We are transferring our ingres database into sqlserver. In ingres we have these values but we consider them as different values. Can we have it in sqlserver too?

Viewing SQL Currently Being Ran

Apr 2, 2008

Hi all,

I'm very new to SQL Server having previously worked with Oracle 10g for the last couple of years.

Anyway, in Oracle there is a view called V$SQL that provides information about SQL that is or has recently been executed. I'm trying to find a similar sort of functionality in SQL Server.

Basically, what I'd like to do is list all of the SQL statements that are running at a given moment. Or even better would be a way of listing all statements that have run in the last 10 minutes.

Appreciate any help for a newbie.

We're on SQL Server 2000 8.00.194

Cheers
Kloid

Viewing The Transaction Log

Dec 4, 2000

Is it possible to view the transaction log to identify events run against a database.
I know that I could create a trace file to log events.
But what I really want to know is whether there is any way to actually view the live .ldf transaction log file and make sense of it.

It is possible to do something similar in Informix.

Viewing A Table From Another Db

Dec 13, 2004

Holy MOLY I've been banging my head up against the wall on this matter for months now. I have two databases and I need to be able to see the tables from different different databases. Usually I create a view like this

LicensingActions.dbo.License_Suspensions

But it wasnt working kept telling me that the License_Suspensions table didnt exsist and at the time the name was in all caps. So I decided to change the name, and low and BEHOLD IT WORKS. The funny was that I wasnt having that problem any of the other tables just that one. Well live and learn. Just thought I'd share that with you guys

Viewing A View...

Feb 17, 2006

I am trying to view a "View" that is in one of my databases, and I am having a problem seeing the scripting that is inside of it. In sql2000 all I needed to do to view a "View" is double click on it. If I double click on a "View" in sql2005 it will open more folders showing the layout, but I want to see the scripting. If I right click on it and then click open view, sql2005 returns the values that the view would bring across. Does anybody know how to view the scripting of a "View" for sql2005?

Also if I select Modify, sql2005 returns scripting but it does not look right.

Thanks for the help!

Viewing Query In EM Is Blocking

Aug 9, 2007

EDIT: Oops in the title. I meant "EM" not "IE".

I'm on a Dev database (full copy). In EM (that is running on the Dev server) I run a view that I used to build the list of rows to be updated.

SQL 2000 Std SP3 on Win 2000 Server.

When I cut-n-Pasted the clause to my "Update" statement in Query Analyser and try to run it, to my surprised, it got hung up.

I looked in EM to see Locks, and to my surprise my EM View Display is blocking the Update! So; I press "Cancel" on my EM View display and, whammo, the update goes.

I tested and it's consistant and does not matter what column I'm updating.

Is this normal behaviour for EM?

EDIT: I tried the exact same scenerio, in the exact same EM and QA screens, but this time remoting over to the Production box (since it's midnight). The blocking did not occur. Weird!
