Storing Results Of Select Statement In @variable

Feb 11, 2008

I'm new to sql stored procedures but I would like to store the results
of an sql statement in a variable such as:

SET @value = select max(price) from product

but this does not work, can someone tell me how I would go
about in storing the results in a variable.

@value is declared as int

Thanks in advance,

Update Statement Using Declared Variable Produces Unexpected Results On SQL Server 2005

Aug 7, 2007

We are getting unexpected results from the following update statement when it is executed on SQL Server 2005.

The strange thing is that we get duplicated values for QM_UID (although when run under SQL Server 2000 we don't get duplicated values)

Can anyone explain why this happens or suggest another way of populating this column without using a cursor or adding a temporary autoincrement column and copying the values over?

declare @NextID int;

set @NextID = 1;

update tmp set QM_UID=@NextID, @NextID = @NextID + 1;

select QM_UID, count(*) from tmp group by QM_UID having count(*) > 1 order by QM_UID

Invalid Results For Order By On Select Query Against Table Variable

Jan 21, 2008

I am attempting to sort the results of a query executed against a table variable in descending order. The data is being inserted into the table variable as expected, however when I attempt to order the results in descending order, the results are incorrect. I have included the code as well as the result set.

DECLARE @tblCustomRange AS TABLE

(

RecordID INTEGER IDENTITY(1,1),

RangeMonth INTEGER,

RangeDay INTEGER

)

DECLARE @Month INTEGER

DECLARE @Day INTEGER

-- Initialize month and day variables.

SET @Month = 8

SET @Day = 11

-- Insert records into the table variable.
INSERT INTO @tblCustomRange

(RangeMonth, RangeDay) VALUES (1,2)

INSERT INTO @tblCustomRange

(RangeMonth, RangeDay) VALUES (1,27)

INSERT INTO @tblCustomRange

(RangeMonth, RangeDay) VALUES (6,10)

INSERT INTO @tblCustomRange

(RangeMonth, RangeDay) VALUES (9,22)

INSERT INTO @tblCustomRange

(RangeMonth, RangeDay) VALUES (12,16)

-- Select everything from the table variable ordering the results by month, day in
-- descending order

SELECT * FROM @tblCustomRange

WHERE (RangeMonth < @Month) OR

(RangeMonth = @Month AND RangeDay <= @Day)

ORDER BY RangeMonth, RangeDay DESC

I am getting the following resultset:

RecordID RangeMonth RangeDay

----------- ----------- -----------

2 1 27

1 1 2

3 6 10

I am expecting the following resultset:

RecordID RangeMonth RangeDay

----------- ----------- -----------

3 6 10

2 1 27

1 1 2

Cycling Through Results Of A Select Statement

Aug 30, 2004

I am new to stored procedures and T-SQL so please stick with me. I have a table that holds information about companies. I am trying to write a stored procedure that when run will query that table and find out if there are more than one entry of that company. All company names in that table must be unique (they can only occur once), if they occur more than once I need to flag it for reporting.

So what is the best way to go about this? Essentially what i was thinking was doing a select * on the table and then going from the first entry to the last and at each entry running a select * from table where companyname = @nameofcompany. @nameofcompany would be the name for that entry. If the select statement revealed more than one entry then i would know there was a problem.

Like I said I am new and this is probably very simple but i need a little help getting started

thanks

Count # Of Results From SELECT Statement

Jun 6, 2008

Hey all - VERY new to SQL so I apologize if I butcher normally trivial things :)

Looking to run a query that will retrieve the number of results returned from a select statement...

Currently have a LicenseID table with a Software column...the statement that works on it's own that i've got is:

SELECT * FROM Software WHERE LicensesID = 2

Currently when I run that with the data so far I get 4 results returned to me...how can I add to that statement so that instead of displaying the results themselves, I just get the number 4 returned as a total number of results?

Thanks all!

Select Statement That Groups Results

Dec 16, 2013

I have a table with three columns. Name, book#, category.

I need to write a select statement that looks at the book# and category and returns all the names that match that into one joined our combined result. So if my name column had john, Jane, Jim, jack, and Steph in unique rows that matched it would bring back a resulted formatted as. John, Jane, Jim, jack, Steph. So I could place that in a field for reference.

SELECT Statement Not Giving Me Desired Results

Jun 27, 2006

I have the following SELECT statement attached to a dropdown box:
SELECT [Workshop] FROM [Workshops] WHERE Workshop <> (SELECT Workshop FROM Workshop_Registration WHERE FullName = @FullName AND Completed = @Completed) ORDER BY [Workshop]
I am trying to get all workshops (50 or more) from the WORKSHOPS table that the logged in user is not already registered for.  This works perfectly as long as the student is registered for at least 1 class.  It populates the dropdown with all of the other classes.  If they aren't registered for a class then it doesn't list any classes.  The problem is definitely the subquery, but how do I make it to where if the subquery doesn't return any results (student not registered for anything), I get all of the workshops in the dropdown?  Any help is appreciated!

Insert Statement Using Results Of Select Query

Feb 11, 2015

I need to insert data into a table based on the results returned by a select statement. Basically, the select statement below gives me a list of all the work orders created in the last hour.

select worknumber from worksorderhdr where date_created > DATEADD(HOUR, -1, GETDATE())

This might return anywhere between 5 and 50 records each time. What I then need to do is use each of the work numbers returned to create a record in the spec_checklist_remind table. The other details in the insert statement will be the same for each insert, it's just the worknumber from the select statement that needs to be added to the insert where the ?? are below:

INSERT INTO spec_checklist_remind (form, record_type, linked_to_worknumber, spec_checklist_id) values (5, 0, '??',52)"

Is there anyway to use a variable to define a column in a select statement. I can put the variable in but I'm sure it will be read as a literal instead of the column.

Trying To Use The Results Of A Case Statement In My Select List In My WHERE Clause?

Aug 10, 2006

I am fairly new with SQL and still learning. I have used a case statemtent for a column in my select list and want to use the results of that statement's field in my WHERE clause but it is not working for me. Here is the code I have so far:

SELECT
l.loanid,
p.investorid,
l.duedate,
case when pc.duedate >= l.duedate then pc.duedate end as RateDueDate,
pc.interestrate
FROM loan l
inner join participation p on p.loanid = l.loanid
inner join paymentchange pc on pc.loanid = l.loanid
where p.investorid = '12345' and RateDueDate is not null
order by l.loanid, pc.duedate

I want to put the results of this case statment in my where clause like highlighted above but it is not working because RateDueDate is not an actual column in the table. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Variable For The Table Name In A SELECT Statement.

Apr 23, 2007

Hi,I'm trying to dynamically assign the table name for a SELECT statement but can't get it to work. Given below is my code: SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

CREATE PROCEDURE GetLastProjectNumber (@DeptCode varchar(20))
AS
BEGIN TRANSACTION
SET NOCOUNT ON

DECLARE @ProjectNumber int
SET @ProjectNumber = 'ProjectNumber' + REPLACE(CONVERT(char,@DeptCode),'.','')
SELECT MAX(@ProjectNumber)
FROM 'tbl_ProjectNumber' + REPLACE(CONVERT(char,@DeptCode),'.','');
END TRANSACTION  Basically, I have a bunch of tables which were created dynamically using the code from this post and now I need to access the last row in a table that matches the supplied DeptCode. This is the error I get:Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure GetLastProjectNumber, Line 29Incorrect syntax near 'tbl_ProjectNumber'. Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

SQL Select Statement With A 'string' Variable?

Apr 16, 2008

I'm trying to add a 'change password' control to my site and seem to be having some issues.  I have code that works if I statically define what user is displayed on the form, but I cant get it to detect the 'authenticated' user and show them the reset for for that ID.If I take the "+ myid" out of the select statement and just define the username statically the form works properly.    Error:System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The column prefix
'System.Security.Principal' does not match with a table name or alias name used
in the query. Here's a piece of the code that is supposed to detect the current logged in user.  However, it gives the error. (some of the code may be redundant but its not causing issues that I can tell)  public void InitPage()    {            IPrincipal p = HttpContext.Current.User;            String myid = HttpContext.Current.User.ToString();            SqlServer sqlServer = new SqlServer(Util.SqlConnectionString());            DataTable dt;            SqlConnection cnn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["myconnection"].ConnectionString);            SqlDataAdapter cmd1 = new SqlDataAdapter("select * from USER WHERE USER_NAME = "+ myid, cnn);            DataTable UIDtable = new DataTable();            cmd1.Fill(UIDtable);            User_Id.Value = UIDtable.Rows[0]["ID"].ToString();            dt = sqlServer.USER_SELECT(Util.SiteURL(Request.QueryString["Pg"].ToString()), User_Id.Value);

Use A Variable Along With The FROM Clause In SELECT Statement

Dec 28, 2004

I have a table 'table_list' which contains two columns, table_name and a record_count. This table stores a list of tables and their corresponding record counts.

What I am trying to do is, to be able to write a select statement, that can read each table name in the 'table_name' column, execute a select count(*) for the same, and update its record_count with the result of select count(*).

This is the code in my procedure..

DECLARE @tab_list CURSOR
set @tab_list = CURSOR FOR select * from table_list
OPEN @tab_list

DECLARE @tab_name varchar(256)
DECLARE @rec_cnt int
FETCH NEXT FROM @tab_list INTO @tab_name, @rec_cnt

select count(*) from @tab_name

This select is looping around along with FETCH till all the table names are exhausted and their counts are updated from the cursor back into the table.

Problem is that, I am not able to use select count(*) from @tab_name, and its not accepting a variable there.

Please help me to construct the select statement that is similiar to

x=<table name>
select * from x
where x is a variable and the table name gets substituted.

what is the syntax for it ?

Put Select Statement In SSIS Variable

Sep 23, 2006

Is it possible to add a variable in SSIS like

name of variable: myVar
Scope: Data Flow Task
Data Type: String
Value:SELECT hello FROM blah WHERE (azerty = @[User::pda]) AND (qwerty = @[User::phone])

@[User::pda] and @[User::phone] are also variables in SSIS just like the myVar I made

I know I'm doing something wrong with the data type because it's stores the whole select statement as a string

Excluding Part Of Select Statement If No Data Is Returned In Results

Aug 22, 2006

I have a query that returns results based on information in several tables.  The problem I am having is that is there are no records in the one table it doesn't return any information at all.  This table may not have any information initially for the employees so I need to show results whether or not there is anything in this one table.
Here is my select statement:
  SELECT employee.emp_id, DATEDIFF(mm, employee.emp_begin_accrual, GETDATE()) * employee.emp_accrual_rate -
(SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft, employee.emp_lname + ', ' + employee.emp_fname + ' ' + employee.emp_minitial + '.' AS emp_name,
department.department_name, location.location_name
FROM employee INNER JOIN
request AS request_1 ON employee.emp_id = request_1.emp_id INNER JOIN
department ON employee.emp_department = department.department_id INNER JOIN
location ON department.department_location = location.location_id
GROUP BY employee.emp_id, employee.emp_begin_accrual, employee.emp_accrual_rate, employee.emp_fname, employee.emp_minitial,
employee.emp_lname, department.department_name, location.location_name
ORDER BY location.location_name, department.department_name, employee.emp_lname

The section below is the part that may or may not contain information:
  SELECT (SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft

So I need it to return results whether this sub query has results or not.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
TIA

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Stored Procedure And SELECT Statement Return Different Results

Dec 4, 2014

I have a stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 database. The stored procedure is very simple, just a SELECT statement. When I run it, it returns 422 rows. However, when I run the SELECT statement from the stored procedure, it returns 467 rows. I've tried this by running both the stored procedure and the SELECT statement in the same SSMS window at the same time, and the behavior is the same. The stored procedure is:

USE [REMS]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [mobile].[GetAllMobileDeviceUsers] Script Date: 12/04/2014 */
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

[Code] ....

When I do this in the same SSMS window:

exec mobile.GetAllMobileDeviceUsers

SELECT
ee.EmployeeID,
EmployeeName = LastName + ', ' + FirstName
FROM EmployeeInvData ee
--UNION

[Code] ....

I get two result sets. The first is 422 rows; the second is 467 rows. Why?

Return Variable Name As Part Of Select Statement.

Mar 9, 2008

hey all,

I have the following query:

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_SelectMostRecentArticle]

AS
BEGIN

DECLARE @article_id INT
SELECT @article_id = (
SELECT TOP 1 article_id
FROM article
ORDER BY article_id DESC
)

DECLARE @comment_count INT
SELECT @comment_count = (
SELECT COUNT(comment_id)
FROM comment
JOIN article ON article_id = comment_article_id
GROUP BY article_id
HAVING article_id = @article_id
)

SELECT TOP 1 article_id, article_author_id,
article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_id
article_author_ip, author_display_name,
category_id, category_name--, comment_count AS @comment_count

FROM article

JOIN author ON author_id = article_author_id
JOIN category ON category_id = article_category_id

GROUP BY article_id, article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_ip,article_author_id,
author_display_name, category_id, category_name

HAVING article_id = @article_id

END
GO

as you can see, im trying to return a comment_count value, but the only way I can do this is by defining the variable.

I have had to do it this way, because I cannot say COUNT(comment.comment_id) AS comment_count or it returns an error that it cant reference the comment.comment_id.

But when change it to FROM article, comment; I get errors about the article_author_id and article_comment_id.

And i cant add a join, because it would return the amount of rows of the comment...

unless someone could help with what i Just decribed (as i would prefer to do it this way), how would i return the variable value as part of the select statement?

Cheers

SELECT Statement That Assign Value To Local Variable

Nov 12, 2013

I am trying to figure out a way to retrieve a field value and assign it to a local variable with out destroying the whole structure of my T-SQL statement.

Here is the code:

DECLARE @AVERAGE_WHOLESALE_PRICE VARCHAR(20)
DECLARE @ORDERBY VARCHAR(20)
SELECT TOP 1 @AVERAGE_WHOLESALE_PRICE = P.NPT_PRICEX,
CASE NPT_TYPE
WHEN '07' THEN 1
WHEN '09' THEN 2

[Code] ....

The error message is
Msg 141, Level 15, State 1, Line 3
A SELECT statement that assigns a value to a variable must not be combined with data-retrieval operations.

How to modify this statement?
