Strange Exceptions With Views Usings Casts On 2005 (worked Fine On Sql2k)

Apr 3, 2007

I have views that cast the data into data types.

On 2005 when retrieving the views using a where clause i get errors. I have put together an example below that illustrates the error.

CREATE TABLE TestData ( Id VARCHAR(10), [Description] VARCHAR(20), [Type] INT)

CREATE TABLE TestTypeLookup( [Type] INT, [Description] VARCHAR(20))

GO

INSERT INTO TestTypeLookup VALUES (1, 'Type 1')

INSERT INTO TestTypeLookup VALUES (2, 'Type 2')

INSERT INTO TestData VALUES ('AA', 'Description for AA', 1)

INSERT INTO TestData VALUES ('10', 'Description for 10', 2)

INSERT INTO TestData VALUES ('20', 'Description for 20', 2)

GO

CREATE VIEW TestView AS

SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT CAST(Id AS INT) Id, [Description]

FROM TestData

WHERE [Type] = (SELECT TOP 1 [Type] FROM TestTypeLookup WHERE [Description] = 'Type 2')

ORDER BY CAST(Id AS INT)

GO

SELECT * FROM TestView WHERE Id = 10

GO

DROP VIEW TestView

DROP TABLE TestData

DROP TABLE TestTypeLookup

GO

Query That Never Finishes In SQL2005 But Worked Fine In 2000

Nov 14, 2007

Hi,

I have a query which used to run fine on a rubbish SQL 2000 box in about a minute, but with SQL 2005 (SP2) it never finishes, even when left overnight. No errors in the logs or anything. It is the same database which was backed up from SQL 2000 and restored into 2005. Does anybody have any ideas?

Cheers
Steve

SQLServer JDBC Exceptions :Controlling Exceptions Text Format

Sep 28, 2006

Hi,

Using RAISERROR from within a stored prcedure will result in a SQLException being thrown at the client side of a JDBC connection.
I am trying to provide a meaningfull error message to be shown to the end user. However, all exceptions thrown will inevitably start with : "[Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC][SQLServer]". The following questions then arise :

- Is there a way of configuring SQL Server not to display this header ?

alternatively,

- Is there another way of conveying error messages to the client through JDBC ?

Thank you for your answers,
Ben

Worked In 2000 But Not In 2005

Feb 22, 2008

Hi there,
I have a query with a rather large (46 table) 1:1 join. Technically, I'm creating a view then trying to select from that view. I seem to be able to create the view ok but cannot resolve a select from it. The error message is:

Msg 8180, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Statement(s) could not be prepared.
Msg 191, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Some part of your SQL statement is nested too deeply. Rewrite the query or break it up into smaller queries.
Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'WHERE'.

This worked in 2000 without a problem

Here is the join:

Not Sure If Upgrade To SQL 2005 Worked?

Feb 27, 2008

I have SQL 2000 Standard edition installed on a Windows server 2003 on a virutal box. SQL was upgraded to 2005 but during the install wizard, it did not prompt me for the Instance Name to upgrade. When done, I see the SQL Management Studio and when I connect, my databases are listed in the studio but the version number says 8.0.760 across the top of management studion which is SQL 2000 sp3.

Enterprise Manager is still available. It appears SQL 2005 was installed side by side with SQL 2000. Does that sound correct?

I downloaded SQL 2005 standard edition from my open license agreement. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I also tried upgrading SQL 2005 via the command prompt and it still shows verison number 8.0.760.

Where am I going wrong?

Thanks.

Unable To Connect To SQL Server 2005 Worked Before

Mar 6, 2007

I am developing an app in VB.Net 2005, and I installed SQL Server 2005 locally on my machine. My app access multiple databases on SQL and has worked like a charm in the past. Today, when I go to access my app, I receive an error when trying to connect to the SQL database.

"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connection"

As I said before, this is a local install and worked fine until today. I checked the services running and Here is what I have:

SQL Server Integration Services - Running
SQL Server FullText Search - Stopped
SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS) - Running
SQL SERVER (MSSQLSERVER) - Stopped <---------- I tried restarting this and it times out
SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) - Stopped
SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) - Stopped
SQL Server Browser - Stopped
SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) - Stopped

I am unable to start any of these services... they all time out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Xp_cmdshell Statement Worked In SQL2000 Not In 2005

Dec 7, 2007

Code Block
Hi All,

I've got a stored procedure called from a trigger on another database. There are two xp_cmdshell statements in the procedure. One writes a couple variables, passed from the trigger, into a text file. The second fires off an executable that uses the text file via a batch file.

Here's the code that worked on the old 32bit SQL2000 box

Code Block
begin
declare @cmd varchar(150)
select @cmd = 'echo ' + @sVariable1 + ',' + @sVariable2 +' > c:aFolderTextFile.txt'
exec master..xp_cmdshell @cmd

declare @cmd2 varchar(150)
select @cmd2 = 'c:aFolderRun.bat'
exec master..xp_cmdshell @cmd2
end

The new box is 64bit SQL2005. When invoked the stored procedure executes without an error. The textfile is written sucessfully. But, the executable called from the second xp_shell statement does not produce the expected result. Because there is no error I'm having trouble determining where the failure lies.

To troubleshoot the problem I've tried:

Running the batch file from the command prompt in the system32 directory... Success

Using sp_xp_cmdshell_proxy_account to be sure of the credentials of the running xp_cmdshell... Failure

My questions:

Does 64 Bit SQL2005 have a different set of parameters when invoking an executable from xp_cmdshell? ie Do I need to rewrite the batch file?
Is there another way call an executable, SQLCMD maybe?

Any help is appreciated...

Code Block
The batch file if you're curious:

"c:Program Files (x86)someVendersomeAppsomeEXE.exe" "C:aFolderTextFile.txt"

Unexpected Exceptions In SQL/COM+ Since Converting To VS 2005

Nov 11, 2005

We are running a COM+ DLL that handles transactions and security with a SQL Server back-end.  This project was started in VS 2003, but we just converted it to VS 2005.  Since the conversion, creating a number of transactions in a row generates errors at consistent, but moving, locations in the code (i.e. the location where the failure occurs changes when I do things such as add additional try/catch statements, so it is not random but also clearly not associated with any particular line of code).

SQL Query Usings Dates In A VBA Sub

Jul 19, 2007

Hi My first post :-)

I am trying to build a VBA Sub that uses a MS SQL query, this is fine it is just I am having trouble building the query to do what I need.

I need to be able to do a between month and years, so if I have a VBA routine that constructs a query from variables. Those variable will be a month and a year.

so I can return a count of all records that were logged between the month and year.

My poorly constructed query is below.

SELECT [DateRaised]
FROM HD_Call
WHERE DateRaised BETWEEN DATEADD([MONTH], -1, GETDATE()) AND DATEADD([MONTH],0, GETDATE())
AND DateRaised BETWEEN DATEADD([YEAR], -2, GETDATE()) AND DATEADD([YEAR],0, GETDATE())
AND [completed] = 1
AND [Assignee] LIKE '%'
AND [CallType] LIKE '%'
Order By 1

Thanks in advance

Can Msdb From SQL2K Personal Edition Be Restored On SQL2K Standard?

How To Avoid Casts In Stored Procedures?

Aug 25, 2007

Hi!Every time I do a drop down list from a stored procedure (in order to get a list of items) I get this error: System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid.in objectName = DataRecord.GetInt32(DataRecord.GetOrdinal("fieldName")); I'm enforced to make CAST(fieldName AS Int) in the specific stored procedure so that the error can go away (I used Int in this example, but the error appears with other types too). So, I was wondering... is there any way to avoid these casts or they are the only solution to my problem? Thanks,

Query Working Fine On 2000 But Not On 2005

Apr 25, 2008

Hello to all,

if have a problem with a SELECT query that works very fine on SQL Server 2000 but not on 2005. I've transfered my db by creating a full backup and restoring the db on 2005. The db is working except this problem.

When i start executing it doesn't finish. I waited a couple of minutes. On 2000 it only takes about 6 seconds to run.

Here it is:

Code Snippet

SELECT * FROM PPS_TERMbesttmpwhere PPS_TermBestTmp.BestNr + CONVERT(varchar(30),CAST(REPLACE(PPS_TermBestTmp.Pos1, ',', '.') AS float),2)

NOT IN (SELECT PPS_TermBest.BestNr + CONVERT(varchar(30), PPS_TermBest.Pos1,2) FROM PPS_TermBest)
Any ideas?

Thanx

Long Running Query In SQL 2005 But Works Fine In SQL 2000

Mar 28, 2008

I have a simple update statement that is running forever in SQL 2005 but works fine in SQL 2000. We have a new server we put SQL 2005, restored db. The table in question WEEKLYSALESHISTORY I even re-indexed all the indexes and rebuilt the stats as well. But still no luck, still running extremely long. 1 hour 20 minutes.

I'll try to give you some background on these table. Weeklysalehistory has approx 30 fields. I have 11 indesxes set up weekending date being one of them. And replication control has index on lasttrandatetime as well. So I think my indexes are fine.

/* Update WeekEnding Date for current weeks WeeklySales Records */
Update WeeklySalesHistory set
weekendingdate =
(SELECT LastTransDateTime from ReplicationControl
where TableName = 'WEEKHST')
where weekendingdate is null

Weekly sales has approx 100,000,000 rows
Replication control has 631,000 (Ithink I can delete some from here to bring it down to 100 or 200 records) Although I don't think this is issue since on 2000 has same thing and works fine.

I was trying to do this within SSIS and thought that was issue. I am new so SSIS but it runs long even if I just run it as a job with this simple Update statement so I think its something with tables, etc that is wrong.

One thing on noticed if I look at the statistics in SQL Server Management studio there is a ton of stats. some being statistics on indexes which makes sense then I have a ton of hind_113_9_6 and simiiar one like this. I must have 90 or so named like this. Not sure how to check on SQL 2000 all the stats to see if they moved over from there or what. I checked a few other tables and don't have all these extra stats. Could this be causing the issue do I need to delete all these extras? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SQL 2005 Thinks A SQL 2000 Backup Is Corrupt, But SQL 2000 Restores Just Fine

Jul 19, 2007

I am attempting to move some SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005. My main production database does not seem to want to move. When I use the SQL 2005 GUI the .bak backup file is marked 'Incomplete'. When I attempt to restore the backup file I get a 'RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database' message. I saw a thread in the SQL Express forum suggesting trying to restore from the T-SQL level to get the GUI out of the picture and I get the same 'error on page (0:0)' message. However when I take the same file and use SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager it restores with no problems.

Any ideas?

Strange Difference Between Sql 2002 And 2005.

Dec 5, 2007

hi,
I just realized that this must be a difference between sql server 2000 and 2005.
For example, the query is like this:
declare @n int
set @n = -1
select @n = employeeid from employees where companyID=1 and idnumber='1-1'
--select @n
if(@n is null)
......
If there is no such employee, in 20002, @n will be null, but in 2005, @n is -1, not null. Am I right?
So, for this piece, I have to do twice on the same where, like
if(exists(select * from employees where companyID=1 and idnumber='1-1'))
select @n=employeeid from employees where companyID=1 and idnumber='1-1'
else
set @n = null
Any better way?

Thanks.

Strange SQL Server 2005 SP Issue

Sep 15, 2006

We have a stored proc that accepts a date and uses that date in a filter. This procedure worked fine for a couple of weeks then started hanging. Basically, this date parameter is used in a where clause.

Our workaround: when we declare a new variable, set it equal to the parameter, then use the declared variable - that fixes it. Take away the declared variable and use the parameter instead and the proc chokes. But the paremeter and the declare variable are both datetime typed. Weird.

We are worried (partly because it worked without hanging for a while) that we are experiencing a larger issue. We are reporting off a database we denormalize and populate nightly with transactional data. A poor man's warehouse if you will, staging the data in a fast reporting format with the prep done each night. This database is wiped and re-populated each night. We have been testing this process with the same source data, so we are not growing our data at all (net result at end of each night is same data as previous day).

I think the source code here is overkill, but I enclosed the proc anyway. The way it is written below, it hangs. Replace these two uses of @AsOf in the proc with @test and the procedure almost instantly returns data. There is a third use of @AsOf that doesn't affect the issue one way or the other. This line is where the replacement fixes the problem:

--Breaks
Where (OpenedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @AsOf) or ClosedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @AsOf)) and (PlanType = @PlanType or @PlanType is null)

--Fixed
Where (OpenedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @test) or ClosedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @test)) and (PlanType = @PlanType or @PlanType is null)

If anyone has experienced this or knows some other symptoms to check for, we are all ears. This is scaring us because otherwise we have a working system on our hands and are near a delivery point. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the complete proc...

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[ClaimCountsByLineOfBusiness]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@AsOf datetime,
@PlanType varchar(50)

AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;

DECLARE @DataFreshness datetime
Select @DataFreshness = DataFreshness From metaReportList Where StoredProcedure = 'ClaimCountsByLineOfBusiness'

If @AsOf is null
SET @AsOf = Convert(datetime, Convert(varchar(10), GetDate(), 101))

DECLARE @test datetime
SET @test = @AsOf

-- Insert statements for procedure here
Select PolicyGroup, Lines,
SUM(CASE WHEN HasPayment = 1 and OpenClosed <= 0 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as ClosedClaimswithPayment,
SUM(CASE WHEN HasPayment = 0 and OpenClosed <= 0 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as ClosedClaimswithoutPayment,
SUM(CASE WHEN OpenClosed > 0 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as ClaimsOpen,
Count(ClaimSummary.ClaimNumber) as ClaimsReported,
AccidentYear, ReportingYear,
--Return the value of the parameters in a friendly way (if null)
Convert(varchar(10), @Asof, 101) as AsOfParameter,
IsNull(@PlanType, 'any value') as PlanTypeParameter,
@DataFreshness as DataFreshness

FROM
(Select ClaimNumber, Max(OpenedDt) as OpenedDt, HasPayment, PolicyGroup, Lines, AccidentYear, ReportingYear
From dbo.factClaimSummary
Where (OpenedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @AsOf) or ClosedDt < DateAdd(day, 1, @AsOf)) and (PlanType = @PlanType or @PlanType is null)
Group by ClaimNumber, HasPayment, PolicyGroup, Lines, AccidentYear, ReportingYear) as ClaimSummary

INNER JOIN

(Select ClaimNumber, SUM(CASE WHEN OpenedDt is not null THEN 1 ELSE -1 END) as OpenClosed
From dbo.factClaimSummary
Group by claimnumber) Status ON ClaimSummary.ClaimNumber = Status.ClaimNumber

Group by PolicyGroup, Lines, AccidentYear, ReportingYear
Order by PolicyGroup, Lines

Strange SqlBulkCopy Exception With SQL Server 2005

Dec 10, 2006

Hello,

Wondering if anyone can help with a strange exception thrown while using the SqlBulkCopy class. I am using the class to transfer records from a DataTable in memory (approx 11,000 rows) into a SQL Server 2005 table.

Initially, the WriteToServer method was timing out a la KB913177 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/913177), however I downloaded the hotfix, which eliminated this issue.

Now, I get a new exception thrown, as follows:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: OLE DB provider 'STREAM' for linked server '(null)' returned invalid data for column '[!BulkInsert].Power_Avg'.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy.WriteToServerInternal()
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy.WriteRowSourceToServer(Int32 columnCount)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer(DataTable table, DataRowState rowState)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer(DataTable table)

I can't see anything wrong with the data I have. The column "Power_Avg" is of type "float". When forming the DataTable, I cast my data to float expcilitly in C#.

Other things to know:

I am using SQL Server Express (2005)
This same code works fine with SQL Server 2000 (MSDE)
My code makes all modifications inside a single transaction of type "Snapshot" (I have activated SNAPSHOT READ COMMITTED in the database)
I have not activated MARS in the connection

Any ideas / suggestions?

Thanks,

Nick

Calculate Time Worked By 15 Min Intervals.

Dec 19, 2007

Ok, I know that there is a very smart programmer out there that can resovle my issue.

I am trying to calculate time worked by 15 minute intervals.

Example:
Emp 1 started work at 13:00:00 and worked 183 minutes

How Does A View And SP Over A Linked Server Worked...

Feb 7, 2008

I am working with Two Server €˜X€™ and €˜Z€™

In €˜X€™ server, I have a linked server named €˜CustSrv€™ which is connecting to €˜Z€™ server
In the €˜Z€™ server I have a Database named €˜SalesDB€™

I have a view name vw_CusgtomerData in my €˜X€™ server which is selecting data from SALESDB..Customer_Tbl from the €˜Z€™ server through that linked server (€˜CustSrv€™)

The View is simple selecting data from Customer_Tbl from SalesDB

SELECT * FROM CustSrv.SalesDB.dbo.CUSTOMER_Tbl

[Note here using * for all columns?? Is it ok for performance aspects]

Now I have some Application which are using that view through some stored procedure.Few of them passing some parameters like Cust_Id etc

Now my query is that.. Am I fulfilling all performance issues?

Or

What is the suggestive way to fetch data from that remote (Linked Server) server to get good performance benefit?

In my opinion we can fetch data 4 different way from that linked server€¦

A.SELECT * FROM CustSrv.SalesDB.dbo.CUSTOMER_Tbl

B.exec GetCustomerData 65
[Sp_GetCustomerData is a Storedprocedure which is passing a parameter 65 that is Customer_ID and the procedure is selecting data from the view vw_CusgtomerData]

C.SELECT cu_customer_id, cu_customer_name FROM vw_CusgtomerData ORDER BY cu_customer_name
Or
SELECT * FROM vw_CusgtomerData where Customer_ID=65

D.select * FROM OPENQUERY
(CustSrv,'SELECT Customer_ID,cu_customer_name FROM SalesDB.dbo. CUSTOMER_Tbl ORDER BY cu_customer_name ')

Am I bypass the concept of view and fetch data directly in the stored procedure through the linked server ??

Strange Login Issue With SQL Server 2005 Mirroring

Mar 27, 2008

Hi,
we have setup synchronous mirroring with witness server. We ran into problem when we stoped the SQLService of Primary Server. Failover Occured and Witness Server made Mirror Server Primary.

The User assosciated with the Database become Orphaned and no one is able to connect to the Database .
We recove login failed error for all login for mirrored database.
We have to manually run the below comand and reset the password for each login.

1.To Detect Orphaned Users
sp_change_users_login @Action='Report';
2.To Resolve an Orphaned User
sp_change_users_login @Action='update_one', @UserNamePattern='<database_user>', @LoginName='<login_name>';
GO

Please let me know why sql server mirroring show such strange behavior. If we manually failove every thing work fine.

Regards
Sufian

Why DTS Package Worked From DTS Designer But Failed On Scheduled Job?

Aug 11, 2006

I created a DTS Package. It worked fine if I  execute the DTS from DTS designer. It failed after I right clicked to Schedule Package, and than right clicked on the job to Start Job from Management - SQL Server Agnet - Jobs. When I clicked View Job History, the error was "The job failed. The last step to run was step 1 (DTSPackageName).

Why did it fail from scheduled DTS?  Thanks.
