Strange Results Converting To Hours
Mar 6, 2008
Hi
I'm getting strange results when converting a number to hours and minutes.
The following section of code....
AbsentMinutes,
CONVERT(varchar(5), DATEADD([minute], [AbsentMinutes], 0), 108) AS AbsentHours,
[Term 1 Minutes],
CONVERT(varchar(5), DATEADD([minute], [Term 1 Minutes], 0), 108) AS Term1Hours,
......is yielding the following results.
AbsentMins 6480 AbsentHours 12:00
Term 1 Mins 21540 Term 1 Hours 23:00
Obviously thats not right but I cant see where.
Can anyone advise please? This has worked for me previously on other data.

I have a float variable that holds a decimal number of hours.
So 1.5 equals 1 hour 30 minutes.
I need to change this to the format 1:30
Any idea how to do this?

Hi!
I have the difference between two dates in milliseconds. I want to convert this difference to the format hh:mm:ss.mmm, without the date. So, if the difference is bigger then one day, I would like to show it like this, for example: 36:25:14.047
How can I do this?
Thank you!

Is it possible to convert for the following SQL statement into SSRS Expression:
SELECT
RIGHT('00' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(2), FLOOR(SUM(Hours))), 2)
+ ':' + RIGHT('00' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(2), FLOOR((SUM(Hours) - FLOOR(SUM(Hours))) * 60)), 2) + ':' + RIGHT('00' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(2),
FLOOR((SUM(Hours) - FLOOR(SUM(Hours))) * 60 - FLOOR((SUM(Hours) - FLOOR(SUM(Hours))) * 60)) * 60), 2)
FROM TableTime
For example I need SSRS expression for converting 1.75 hours into 01:45:00.

I received some strange results after typing the wrong column in a subselect using IN. I've been puzzling over it a while now and can't quite figure out why it is doing what it is.
Here's an example of what is happening.
use northwind
go
select * from Customers where CustomerID in
( select CustomerID from Employees where 1 = 0 )
Now, there is no customerid on the Employees table, so running the subquery alone will produce an error. However when the full query above is run, all rows in the customer table are returned.
It was my understanding that the inner querry is evaluated first, and the results used by the outer query. I'm having a hard time seeing how this query is going anywhere.
Any ideas?

Hi there,I'm a little bit confused here. I the TOP 1 function with ORDER BY DESC to get the last id in my table but it doesn't seems to work. Here's an example:SELECT TOP 1 ID FROM Worksheet WHERE Style='302' AND Notes='Automatically created from m0851System.' AND Title='STD COST UPDATED FORM m0851System' ORDER BY ID DESCSELECT ID FROM Worksheet WHERE Style='302' AND Notes='Automatically created from m0851System.' AND Title='STD COST UPDATED FORM m0851System' ORDER BY ID ASCSo basically the first SELECT should return the last id value of the second query but it doesn't.The first query gives me that: 60721And the second one gives me that:60680606816068360684606856068660718607196072060721610506112261124So as you can see my TOP 1 ID ORDER BY ID DESC should gave me this result: 61124Am I missing something or... ?Please help me this is aleready in function so I have to fix it ASAP.Thank you, Regards,OR-THO

Hi all,Using SQL Server 2000, SP4.I have a table of street names (Rua) whose ids (cod_rua) are foreignkeys into a consumer table (Consumidor). It turns out that the "Rua"table has many unused records which I'd like to wipe out. For instance, there are some 2800 unused records in the "Rua" table, and only some200 records actually being used by the "Consumidor" table (which, itself, has some 5000 records).Attempting to find the unused records, I issued the following query:a)SELECT COD_RUA FROM RUAWHERE COD_RUA NOT IN (SELECT COD_RUA FROM CONSUMIDOR)To my surprise, the query came out empty. But the following queryshowed the 200 or so records which *are* being used:b)SELECT COD_RUA FROM RUAWHERE COD_RUA IN (SELECT COD_RUA FROM CONSUMIDOR)I've found two solutions for the query to list the records *notexisting* in the Consumidor table:c)SELECT COD_RUA FROM RUAWHERE COD_RUA NOT IN (SELECT COD_RUA FROM CONSUMIDORWHERE COD_RUA IS NOT NULL)d)SELECT COD_RUA FROM RUAWHERE COD_RUA NOT IN (SELECT COD_RUA FROM RUAWHERE COD_RUA IN (SELECT COD_RUA FROM CONSUMIDOR))I know that there are many other possible solutions to the query(including left joins), but what I don't understand is why the query a)failed. Can some of you, oh mighty gurus, enlighten me?For the record, here's how both tables are (partially) declared:CREATE TABLE Rua (Cod_Rua int NOT NULL ,Rua varchar (35) NULL ,-- ...-- other unrelated fields-- ...CONSTRAINT Pk_CodRuaPRIMARY KEY (Cod_Rua))CREATE TABLE Consumidor (Cod_Consumidor int NOT NULL ,Cod_Rua int NULL ,-- ...-- other unrelated fields-- ...CONSTRAINT Pk_CodConsumidorPRIMARY KEY(Cod_Consumidor) ,CONSTRAINT Fk_CodRua_ConsumidorFOREIGN KEY (Cod_Rua)REFERENCES Rua (Cod_Rua))Regards,Branco Medeiros

Bit of an obscure one here, so please bear with me. I have two copiesof a database which should be identical. Both have a complex viewwhich is identical. I can open the views and the data is as expectedand match. I can query it in several ways as detailed below. The 5thversion of the simple query below based on the second copy of the viewfails, but works under the first copy./*1 Statement below works*/SELECT *FROM AgentHierarchyWHERE AdviserId = 6069819/*2 Statement below works*/SELECT *, AH.AdviserLastName, AH.AdviserFirstNameFROM AgentHierarchy AHWHERE AdviserId = 6069819/*3 Statement below works*/SELECT *, AH.AdviserLastName + ', '+ AH.AdviserFirstNameFROM AgentHierarchy AHWHERE AdviserId = 6069819/*4 Statement below works*/SELECT AH.AdviserLastName + ', '+ AH.AdviserFirstNameFROM AgentHierarchy AH/*5 Statement below fails*/SELECT AH.AdviserLastName + ', '+ AH.AdviserFirstNameFROM AgentHierarchy AHWHERE AdviserId = 6069819The error I get is to do with conversion of data within the view. It'sa little complex, but the view works fine. It looks to me like when Irun the 5th statement above, it re-runs the view and then finds anerror. So, I took the complex view and ran that with the data output into atemporary table with the queries above run against that, and it worksfine. The problem is that the statement I need is based around the 5thone above (part of an update statement).I'm struggling to understand why some of the queries above work andone doesn't. If you look at 3 and 5 I'd expect them both to fail. Ifit failed consistently I could get further into it.The problem is that it's a little difficult to get the view itselfchanged as it was supplied by a third party, but if it hasn't changedand the data hasn't changed then it's got to be something else causingthe problem.Anyway, as I said, it's a bit obscure, but if this sounds familiar I'dbe interested in your opinion. Thanks in advance.

The strange in this problem is that i got this problem suddenly and before all was running without any error.
The script that cause the error is in the trigger for insertion on a table, there is somewhere where i convert from varchar to bigint, but all seems fine to me i printed the varchar variable and the conversion looks valid, also i included several print statement in the script for debugging purposes and i feel everything is right and there shouldn't be any error.
I don't think anything changed in my db, so i wonder where this problem is comming from ?
this is the code:

Hi,I have written a stored procedure which includes a DATEPART command, i.e.DATEPART(weekday, <date>)The result when ran from SQL Query Analyser is as expected . i.e. Sundayreturns 1, Monday 2, etcWhen the same proc is called from within the Access 2000 project Sundayis returned as 7, Saturday as 6 instead of 1 and 7 respectively.Basically the same stored proc returns different data depending on fromwhere it has been called. This is causing some issues obviously as the resulting tables andreports are showing incorrect data when presented in Access 2000.Has anyone else experienced this before or have any idea what may cause it.Regards,PB

I want to display Days Hours Mins Format.
I am Having two columns Like below,
Col1 (in days) Â Â col2 (In Hours : Mins)
3days 4:5Â
In this first have to  add Col1 and Col2 (Here one day is equals to 9 hours ) so the addition is 31.5
From this 31.5 I should display 3 Days 4 Hours 30 Mins because 31.5 contains 3 (9 hours) days 4 Hours and .5 is equals to 30 mins.

I have a lot of rows of hours, set up like this: 0745, 0800, 2200, 1145 and so on (varchar(5), for some reason).
These are converted into a smalldatetime like this:
CONVERT(smalldatetime, STUFF(timestarted, 3, 0, ':')) [this would give output like this - 1900-01-01 11:45:00]
This code has been in place for years...and we stick the date on later from another column.
But recently, it's started to fail for some rows, with "The conversion of a varchar data type to a smalldatetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value".
My assumption is that new data being added in is junk. If I query for these values and just list them (rather than adding a column to convert them also) that's fine, of course. I've checked all the stuffed (but not yet converted - so 11:45 rather than 1145) output to see if it ISDATE(), and it is. There are no times with hours > 23 or minutes greater than 59 either.
If I add the CONVERT in, we see the error message. But here's the oddity, if I place all of the rows into a holding table, and retry the conversion, there is no error. It's this last bit that is puzzling me. Plus I can't see any errors in the hours data that would cause a conversion problem.
I've put the whole of this into a cursor to try to trap the error rows too, but all processes fine. Why would it fail if NOT in a cursor?

I have data coming from a telephony system that keeps track of when anemployee makes a phone call to conduct a survey and which project numberis being billed for the time the employee spends on that phone call in aMS SQL Server 2000 database (which I don't own). The data is being returned to me in a view (see DDL for w_HR_Call_Logbelow). I link to this view in MS access through ODBC to create alinked table. I have my own view in Access that converts the integernumbers for start and end date to Date/Time and inserts some otherinformation i need. This data is eventually going to be compared with data from someelectronic timesheets for purposes of comparing entered hours vs hoursactually spent on the telephone, and the people that will be viewing thedata need the total time on the telephone as wall as that total brokendown by day/evening and weekend. Getting weekend durations is easyenough (see SQL for qryTelephonyData below), but I was wondering ifanyone knew of efficient set-based methods for doing a day/eveningbreakdown of some duration given a start date and end date (with theday/evening boundary being 17:59:59)? My impression is that to do thiscorrectly (i.e., handle employees working in different time zones, adjusting for DST, and figuring out what the boundary is for switchingfrom evening back to day) will require procedural code (probably inVisual Basic or VBA).However, if there are set-based algorithms that can accomplish it inSQL, I'd like to explore those, as well. Hi everyone,
I€™m suffering a queer behaviour when I use BIDS. Concretely, when I open a dtsx from my project (it has 10 packages) many times Sequence Container and Data Flow tasks are invisible. I mean, its lines are not visible at all whereas its titles are. I mean, what you see is just a white box€¦
Then, I€™m gonna Data Flow layer and I have to do double-clik over the tasks and are visible but on Control Flow I don€™t see how to solve.
Curiously in our development and production server such behaviour doesn€™t happen (we are accessing by mean Terminal Server from our workstations)
How odd!. Everything is fine except this.
I want to remark you that such project has been copied from the server, this is, these packages are been built on the server
Thanks for your thougts or ideas,

hi, like, if i need to do delete some items with the id = 10000 then also need to update on the remaining items on the with the same idthen i will need to go through all the records to fetch the items with the same id right? so, is there something that i can use to hold those records so that i can do the delete and update just on those records and don't need to query twice? or is there a way to do that in one go ?thanks in advance!

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).
I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.
Right now, I'm doing it this way.
DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId
[Code] .....
This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Hi,
I have a web form that lets users search for people in my database they wish to contact. The database returns a paged set of results using a CTE, Top X, and Row_number().
I would like to give my users to option of removing individual people from this list but cannot find a way to do this.
I have tried creating a session variable with a comma delimited list of ID's that I pass to my sproc and use in a NOT IN() statement. But I keep getting a "Input string was not in a correct format." Error Message.
Is there any way to do this? I am still new to stored procedures so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi, when I copy and paste results from query analyzer into Excel it appears that values with zeroes at the end loose the zeroes. Example, if I copy and paste V128.0 into an Excel cell it comes out as V128 or if I copy 178.70 it displays as 178.7 - any ideas? I'm using SQL Enterprise Manager for 2000.

We have a few Servers that have space issues that need full DB Backups every day. As a result, we have to carefully watch how many DB Backup files we keep on the Server. On the Maintenance Plan, if I set the 'Delete files older than:' to '1' 'Day', will this delete anything over 24 hours old? What I have noticed, is that it tends to delete on Tuesday anything that was created on Sunday, but not Monday. Therefore, I am assuming that instead of '1 Day' being 24 hours, it is anything less than 47 hours and 59 minutes...
Is my assumption correct or do I need to look at something else. Thanks!

My database is current 135GB. I have been running the following:
DBCC SHRINKFILE([database_data],2)
DBCC SHRINKDATABASE ( [Database],20,TRUNCATEONLY)
It's been running for 28 hours. Should it be taking this long? If I stop the shrink, will it need to rollback?
Thanks!

I have a job that runs between the hours of 10 PM and 9 AM. It launches a controller stored procedure that will call other stored procedure until the entire process is done.I would like the controlling stored procedure to only call the steps between the hours of 10PM and 9AM also.. So at 8:59 AM it will start the next step, but at 9:00 AM it will exit.

I use SQL 2K with an Access 2000 project as front end. I have four date fields in a table. The first one should contain a date (eg 20th of February), the second one a starting hour (eg 8:00h), the third one the finishing hour (eg 10:00h) and the fourth should calculate the difference between the second and third column.
So I created four datetime fields. Storing a date in the first column is no problem, but storing only hours doesn't seem to do what I want. When I enter 8:00 from within the Access, it is stored 1/1/1900 8:00 in SQL Server. How can I make sure that the hours are saved with the date of the second column, so either as 8:00 without further information or as eg 20-2-2004 8:00?

I am querying a database that has hours worked listed by pay rate. I want to return sum of hours per pay rates I have been given but hours are stored in multiple columns. So If I run the below query for one worker it returns.
HoursBill_rate_1 Hours_2Bill_rate_2
34.2610.26 0.000.00
5.7410.26 5.689.67
I want to report to the business:
40hrs 10.26
5.68 9.67
The query I have written is below:
Select Sum(Hours_1) As Hours,Bill_rate_1,Sum(Hours_2) as Hours_2,Bill_rate_2--,Hours_3,Bill_rate_3
From Valid_Timesheets
Where (Department = '938' and tax_period = 3 and tax_year = 2015 AND PERSONNEL_REF = '991A001198') and
((Bill_Rate_1 = £10.26 or
Bill_Rate_1 = £9.67 or
Bill_Rate_1 = £8.27 or
[Code] ....
