Strange Table Connection Problem
Nov 29, 2005
Hi
I've got a database in SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003 which appears to be okay from SQL Enterprise Manager and from SQL Query Analyser but which has a problem with one particular table when connected to from a VB DLL using ADO. The queries do either a select or an insert - the latter is via a stored procedure. Once the failure happens, any other queries generate a -2147217871[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired.
If I delete the table and recreate it all is well. If I run an integrity check nothing shows up. I've tried deleting the indexes and that made no difference either. SQL Server is patched up to SP4 and ADO is from the MDAC 2.8. VB is version 6 Enterprise with SP6. None of the other databases in the instance exhibit the problem and they're all structured in an identical way. The table is quite large but we've got much larger one's using the same procedures and they don't have a problem. Also, if I restore a backup of the problem database onto another machine the problem shows on the other machine too.
Any ideas anyone?

I am sure I am using the same connection string for all connection.open, and closing all connections as soon as possible⦠but
When I try to debug my web app with vs, it runs for some time then I get:
The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached exception
However, if I just access the application normally form the url (not using vs.net) it runs flawlessly.
Has some one had the same problem? i can't debug help!!

Hi guys,
We've been experiencing this strange error from our SQL server for about a month now and i've tried alot of things, visited alot of websites and manufactured a few possible solutions but nothing helps! Its very frustrating.
This is the error i get when i try and expand the server tree:
A connection could not be established to [OurServerName]
Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())..
Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties by clicking on [OurServerName] node) and try again.
What really gets to me is that everything works after i restart the server. Then things will go fine for about a day or two and then the same thing again. This i causing alot of downtime for us. Can anyone please just give me a suggestion?

Vendor app (written in VB '05) connects fine building screens that list data from only one record but blows up building 'list' screens that list multiple records. Really strange-it works fine when run locally on the server (Win2K3) and when run from one developer's machine (which has VS 2005 but not SQLExpress) but not from other developer's machines (which have both VS 2005 & SQLExpress) nor from a 'user' machine (which has neither). All have .Net Frameworks 2.0, the developer machines have SQL Management Studio & connect fine via that.
Vendor, of course, says it's a configuration issue so not their problem. I'm trying to figure out what they could be doing differently when building a list screen & therefore why it would fail. Fact that it works locally suggests that the failure is in the remote connection-but fact that it connects on 'single record' screens says that remote connections work. So what would be different about a request to return multiple records and why would it work locally but not remotely?
BTW, Surface Area Configuration Manager won't run-it reports 'localhost does not exist on the network or it cannot be configured remotely'. This is when running the Configuration tool directly on the server.
Any ideas?

Hello,I developed a win32 .exe CGI that connects to a clustered SQLServer toreport some data. The software is written with Borland C++Builder. This is the oledb string:Name=Provider=SQLOLEDB;Password=xxx;Persist Security Info=True;UserID=xxxx;Data Source=xxxxx;Initial Catalog=xxxxx;NetworkLibrary=dbmssocnIt suddendly stopped working on my customer network, so I made sometest and I verivied that the problem is on the connection withSQLServer: my test program just opens a connection, closes it andexits, reporting in a log file if the open was successful or failed. If I run the program locally, just launching it, no problem, it works.I can run it mutilple time continuosly and is connects every time.If I run the program through my webserver, as a CGI that's how it issupposed to work (http:\localhostscriptsconnect.exe), it connectsthe first time, and then I have to wait 40 seconds to connect againsuccessfully, or it fails. If I try against MY sqlserver on my laptop or on my network no 40 secproblems, but on my customer network, with THEIR SQLServer , if I tryto connect from their webserver, or from my laptop webserver, I havethis 40sec problem.I analyzed the network traffic, and I discovered that when I run mytest program locally it originates only TCP/IP packets, and SQLServeranswers only with TCP/IP.But when I use it from the webserver as a CGI, it originates an UDPpacket, then SQL answers with another UDP packet, and then theycommunicate over TCP/IP.This when it works: the second time my program continues to send theUDP packet, but it receives no answer, and fails the communication.I can only say that:- we haven't touched the program for months, and it really stoppedworking suddendly, so I suspect that something in my customer netowrkhas changed- I tried many different OLEDB strings, disabling connection poolingand all the services, calling the SQLServer by name or IP...- the problem can't be related to my program, because now is reallyjust an oledb connection testAnyone have an idea?Thank you very much,Mattia

Well this has got most of us stracthing our head as not matter what we do we can't connect remotely
But it get's a bit more complex. We have an existing web application running with a local instance of express running fine. However as the server is getting hammered we need to put the new version of the site on a second server. Unfortunately the key contact who use to work on the old system and set it up is no longer avialable. We've been through all the basics and nothing works... our latest attempt was to install a new instance of 2005 as we were not sure what was going on.
So, here is the log for this new clean instance:
Code Snippet
2008-02-28 15:12:13.75 spid5s Server name is 'S15271584SQLEXPRESS'. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.
2008-02-28 15:12:13.75 spid5s Starting up database 'msdb'.
2008-02-28 15:12:14.00 spid8s Clearing tempdb database.
2008-02-28 15:12:14.26 Server A self-generated certificate was successfully loaded for encryption.
2008-02-28 15:12:14.29 Server Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 4286].
2008-02-28 15:12:14.29 Server Server local connection provider is ready to accept connection on [ \.pipeSQLLocalSQLEXPRESS ].
2008-02-28 15:12:14.29 Server Server named pipe provider is ready to accept connection on [ \.pipeMSSQL$SQLEXPRESSsqlquery ].
The Browser is up and running and we try to connect via SQL Management Studio with the following details:
SERVERNAMESQLExpress
SQL Server Authentication
But get:
Code Snippet
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to SERVERNAMESQLEXPRESS.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. How do I know this is not a connectivity/firewall issue? Simple:
1. We stop the SQLExpress instance
2. Setup netcat to listen on that port (nc -l -p 4286)
3. Connect via telnet (telnet SERVERNAME 4286) and type something which then appears printed out on the other end.
Anyway, the Windows Firewall is off and I can't see any other firewalls installed (we did not setup this server).
Btw, if we try and connect to the existing instance we get:
Code Snippet

Cannot connect to www.a-t-s.net.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Hi,
I have a strange problem with a sql table.
One of my table, dbo.Customer, gives me different values of "row count" everytime I check the properties.
The dbo.Customer have around 12 000 rows but when I check the properties (or open the table) the value always differs. The table row count can have any value from ~9000 - 12000.
Its like the table are trying to load all rows but cant.
Anyone have any idea what the problem can be?

Try a little experiment. Partly to humor me, and make me believe I am not quite insane.
Step 1: Install SQL server 2000, such that the data files are not in the default location, but in a location with a shorter path (i.e. install the data files to E:MSSQL8).
Step 2: Run the following queries, and comment on any oddities:
select filename
from master..sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
go
select reverse(rtrim(filename)), filename
from sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
go
select reverse(rtrim(filename))
from sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
I am guessing that #2 is some sort of odd effect caused by the fixed length data field, but I just want to make sure that other people get this oddity, and not just me. I have no idea what could be causing the third output...or perhaps the lack of it.

Hi,
I am working for my client on SQL 2005 Enterprise & observed a strange behaviour. Consider a table(EMPTABLE) as below:
PK, INT
VARCHAR
EMPID
EMPNAME
1
A
2
B
3
C
4
D
5
E
6
F
7
G
8
H
9
I
10
J
Now, I wanted the 5th highest EMPID from 2 from the table. Now, we know that the SQL
SELECT TOP 6 EMPID FROM EMPTABLE WHERE EMPID >=2 should (from all other possibilities) return me the desired value as the last row of the output table. I tried to get this in a derived table & get the MAX value i.e.
SELECT MAX(EMPID) FROM
(
SELECT TOP 6 EMPID FROM EMPTABLE WHERE EMPID >=2
) der
But this returns me 10, when I would've thought 7 was the expected answer
I remodified my query as mentioned below to strangely get 7 as the result...
SELECT MAX(EMPID) FROM
(
SELECT TOP 6 EMPID FROM EMPTABLE WHERE EMPID >=2 ORDER BY EMPID ASC
) der
How did the ORDER BY hep it???
Also, if I use
SELECT MAX(EMPID) FROM
(
SELECT TOP 6 EMPID FROM EMPTABLE WHERE EMPID >2
) der
I get the same result without having to specify the ORDER BY in my derived TABLE...
I tried looking for similar threads. But nothing could explain this to me...
If anyone knows what I am not able to understand, please let me know.

I have a data file that I converted from Access to SQL Server using theupsizing wizard. I then attached the tables to the Access front end using anODBC connection. I have one table that is read only for some reason. I'mnot sure how that happened, it went through the same procedures as the othertables in terms of upsizing and connecting. The original table was not readonly or hidden or anything else, it had full permissions.I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the table but still the samething. In SQL Server, the permissions are the same as all the other tables.I can't seem to figure out what's making this one read only.I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express and Access 2003. Any ideas would begreatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Im suffering a queer behaviour when I use BIDS. Concretely, when I open a dtsx from my project (it has 10 packages) many times Sequence Container and Data Flow tasks are invisible. I mean, its lines are not visible at all whereas its titles are. I mean, what you see is just a white box¦
Then, Im gonna Data Flow layer and I have to do double-clik over the tasks and are visible but on Control Flow I dont see how to solve.
Curiously in our development and production server such behaviour doesnt happen (we are accessing by mean Terminal Server from our workstations)
How odd!. Everything is fine except this.
I want to remark you that such project has been copied from the server, this is, these packages are been built on the server
Thanks for your thougts or ideas,

An insert statement was not inserting all the data into a table. Found it very strange as the other fields in the row were inserted. I ran SQL profiler and found that sql statement had all the fields in the insert statement but some of the fields were not inserted. Below is the sql statement which is created dyanmically by a asp.net C# class. The columns which are not inserted are 'totaltax' and 'totalamount' ...while the 'shipto_name' etc...were inserted.there were not errors thrown. The sql from the code cannot be shown here as it is dynamically built referencing C# class files. It works fine on another test database which uses the same dlls. I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?

I have a VB6 program on my PC that connects into and looks at a slqserver 7 table on a development server. This server is rebootedeverynight. Everytime the connection is interupted, an error messagepops up. This is expected to happen, but I wanted to delay this errormessage from popping up and give the server a chance to reboot. I putthe statement'cnn.ConnectionTimeout = 600' -> cnn is a new connectionto delay the vb program 10 minutes and then reconnect when theconnection is found. When the connection is found again - an errormessage still pops up saying:"The following error occured in the function BuildStepArray:-2147467259Description: Cannot open the database requested in login'DBA_Utilities'. Login fails."I wanted this delay in the vb program so an error message wouldnt popup unless the server was really down.Does anyone know what this message could mean or how to fix this??Thanks!Mike

I have a package that uses a for loop to iterate through an unknown amount of excel files and pull their data into a table. However, there will be cases when the file is corrupted or has some sort of problem so that either the transformation will fail or the excel data source will fail with an oledb connection error.
Could anyone suggest a clean way to trap these errors? Specifically, the "Cannot Aquire Connection from Connection Manager", which is the excel connection.
Thanks,

I have a datasource where i assign the control Parameter value depending on whether theres a value in the querystring or a gridview selectedvalue is indeed selected.When i do this using a querystring it works fine, however, when i do it using gridView_selectedIndexChanged it doesn't work.Here's the code <asp:SqlDataSource ID="jobDetailsDS" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:promanConn %>" SelectCommand="SELECT tblJobs.intJobId, tblJobs.intJobStaffId, tblJobs.intJobUserId, tblJobs.intJobCategoryId, tblJobs.strJobTitle, tblJobs.strJobDesc, tblJobs.strJobNotes, tblJobs.dateJobLogged, tblJobs.dateJobDeadline, tblJobs.dateJobCompleted, tblJobs.intJobPriorityId, tblJobs.strJobSolution, tblJobs.boolJobCompleted, tblPriority.priorityName, tblPriority.id, tblPriority.priorityOrder, tblStaff.staffName, tblStaff.id AS staffID, tblProblemCategoriesLookup.strProblemCatName, tblProblemCategoriesLookup.intProblemCatId, tblStaff_1.id AS Expr1, tblStaff_1.staffName AS UserName FROM tblJobs INNER JOIN tblPriority ON tblJobs.intJobPriorityId = tblPriority.id INNER JOIN tblStaff ON tblJobs.intJobStaffId = tblStaff.id INNER JOIN tblProblemCategoriesLookup ON tblJobs.intJobCategoryId = tblProblemCategoriesLookup.intProblemCatId INNER JOIN tblStaff AS tblStaff_1 ON tblJobs.intJobUserId = tblStaff_1.id WHERE (tblJobs.intJobId = @intJobId)" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO tblJobs(intJobStaffId, intJobUserId, intJobCategoryId, strJobTitle, strJobDesc, strJobNotes, dateJobLogged, dateJobDeadline, intJobPriorityId, boolJobCompleted) VALUES (@intJobStaffId, 56 , 39, @strJobTitle, @strJobDesc, @strJobNotes,{ fn NOW() }, { fn NOW() }, @intJobPriorityId, 0); "> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="intJobId" Type="int32" /> </SelectParameters> <InsertParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="intJobStaffId" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="strJobTitle" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="strJobDesc" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="strJobNotes" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="intJobPriorityId" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="intJobUserId" Type="Int32" /> </InsertParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource>Code Behind ElseIf dest > 0 Then jobDetailsDS.SelectParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = Request.QueryString("dest") notesDS.SelectParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = Request.QueryString("dest") notesDS.InsertParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = Request.QueryString("dest") gvActiveJobs.Visible = "False" End If End Sub Protected Sub gvActiveJobs_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles gvActiveJobs.SelectedIndexChanged gvActiveJobs.Visible = "False" jobDetailsDS.SelectParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = gvActiveJobs.SelectedValue notesDS.SelectParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = gvActiveJobs.SelectedValue notesDS.InsertParameters.Item("intJobId").DefaultValue = gvActiveJobs.SelectedValue End Sub I also debugged and checked the value of gvActiveJobs.SelectedValue and it is what i was expecting but its still no good.Can anyone help?ThanksMatt

Hi,
I have table in my db thats used as a temporary table. At the end of the day it contains thousands of records which get summarized then all are deleted. I recently moved the application over to a new server with pretty much the same hardware config and noticed a big performance hit when running queries on this temp table (455 milliseconds as opposed to 1) In short, the fix was dropping the table and re-creating it.
Anybody know how this could be? I know that even if you delete records from a table, the table still seems to retain its physical size on the hard drive, could this have something to do with it?
Thanks

CREATE TABLE #users(users varchar(50),pasw varchar(50),title varchar(50))
insert into #users select 'test','abcdef','ceo'
SELECT * FROM #users
alter table #users alter column pasw nvarchar(50)
update #users set pasw=pwdencrypt(pasw)
SELECT * FROM #users
What happens to the TITLE column?
I had a table like the above with users and passwords in the Production DB. The password column had VARCHAR type. I changed it to NVARCHAR and encrypted the passwords. When i executed the SELECT *, the title column appeared like this.
If i query the table by column names instead of * i see the correct values. I couldn't understand what behaviour is it.
Howdy!

Hi,
Is there a way of uploading column definitions from the Flat File Connection Manager into a SQL Server table definition. Since I have over a dozen data sources to process each with around 200 columns and of course like many BI techies I have little immediate influence over the structure of these flat files. I just know that these data sources are business critical.
Judging by looking at similar threads I can't be the only one who would greatly benefit from being able to upload column definitions from the Flat File Connection Manager into a SQL Server table definition as opposed to doing this manually.
Thanks in advance,
Kieran.

I am using c# and ASP.NET 2 and I am getting a very strange error. I
have a field called CompanyID in SQL Server 2005, and it allows null
values in it. When this CompanyID is not NULL, ie for example it is
202, then when i press the update button it allows me to update
perfectly in the database. However if the CompanyID is NULL,
and I try to update the companyID, to lets say 202, the application
just crashes with the following message:- System.InvalidCastException: Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. I tried to set some breakpoints in the application to debug, however it does not even pass through these breakpoints! Any ideas on what the problem can be or how I can debug? Thanks for your help and time Johann

This is the actual statement displayed from Response.Write in classic ASP. INSERT INTO WOTasks (WoNum,TaskNum,TaskDesc,TaskMemo,Account,ModifyDate,Estimate,TaskHours,Unit,UnitCost,TotalCost) SELECT '06-012497',TaskNum,TaskDesc,TaskMemo,Account,'2006-Oct-3',1,TaskHours,Unit,UnitCost,TotalCost FROM Tasks WHERE procnum = '000002' There are 4 records returned from the SELECT part of the statement. In some situations, 4 records are inserted to WOTasks table, in others, only 1 record is inserted. I can't find out why 1 record, instead of 4, record is inserted. A form page submits the form to the save page using post method. The above statement is contained in the save page. When one of the form textbox is filled, 1 record is inserted. When the textbox is not filled, 4 records are inserted. You may think the textbox has something to do with the behaviour. I also think so but the content of the textbox does not affect the sql statement. In both cases, the insert statement is the same. In the actual codes, only strings in quotes are variables and the rest are hardcoded. When I run the statement in SQL Server, 4 records are affected. No such problem when connected with Access. The actual code belowSub AddTask(ByVal proc, ByVal wonum) Dim sSQL sSQL = "INSERT INTO WOTasks (WoNum,TaskNum,TaskDesc,TaskMemo,Account,ModifyDate,Estimate,TaskHours,Unit,UnitCost,TotalCost) SELECT '" & wonum & _ "',TaskNum,TaskDesc,TaskMemo,Account,'" & curDate & "',1,TaskHours,Unit,UnitCost,TotalCost FROM Tasks WHERE procnum='" & proc & "'" 'Response.Write sSQL:Response.End conn.Execute sSQL, , 128 End Sub

Hi there I have this statement I have written as follows:strCommand = "SELECT * FROM tblstock WHERE Type='"&Statement &"' AND Description like'"&criteria &"%' OR Tag like'"&criteria &"%'OR Location like'"&criteria &"%' OR LAN like'"&criteria &"%' OR RAM like'"&criteria &"%' OR CD like'"&criteria &"%' OR OS like '" &criteria &"%' OR SN like'" &criteria &"%' OR DeviceStatus like'" &criteria &"%' ORDER BY " &sSortStr The variable "Statement" is passed into the sub as "PC" which means only records of type "PC" should be displayed along with any other criteria. The issue I'm having is that when I specify criteria I'm also recieving other types eg "Cameras" if they contain any of my criteria.. I can't understand how because in the statement I tell it only to display records of type "PC".. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
