Strange Error When Connecting To Database.

May 11, 2008

Hello,

I'm tyring a simple piece of code to conenct to my database: SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection("Data Source=localhost; Initial Catalog=OrderingSystem; Integrated Security=SSPI");
try
{
// Try to open the connection.
con.Open();
label1.Text = "<b>Server Version: " + con.ServerVersion;
label1.Text += "<br />Connection Is: " + con.State.ToString();
}
catch (Exception err)
{
// Handle an error by displaying the information.
label1.Text = "Error reading the database. " + err.Message;
}
finally
{
// Either way, make sure the connection is properly closed.
// Even if the connection wasn't opened successfully,
// calling Close() won't cause an error.
con.Close();
label1.Text += "<br />Now Connection Is: " +
con.State.ToString();
}

When I try this, I get an error:
"Error reading the database. Cannot open database "OrderingSystem" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'."

The strange thing is, this code works perfectly If I use it in a Windows Forms application.

Is it a problem with SQL server, IIS or my code?
I'm using SQL Server 2005 (SP2) 32bit developer edition + IIS 6.0 + Visual Studio 2008 Pro all runnign on my Windows XP x64 PC.

Thankyou

Can't Copy Database, Strange Error

Sep 25, 2006

I'm trying to copy a database from my web host to local Sql Server 2005 instance using the Copy Database wizard. I get this error:An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. Server user 'celestine' is not a valid user id database 'db2'.However, 'db2' isn't the database I was trying to copy! I am trying to copy db1, but this error is complaining about db2, which is in fact somebody else's database that I don't have a login for. Why am I getting an error about db2 when I'm not trying to do anything with db2???I can however export the tables from db1 just fine using Export. But then I have to go back and generate script to re-create the stored procs, views, etc., so it is rather tedious to do it that way.

Strange Error Restoring Database

Jul 9, 2001

Hi all.

I was just restoring one database and creating another concurrently on the same server. The restore took longer than the create due to the respective sizes.
After the create had finished (done in Query Analyzer) I went back to the restore to see how it was getting on (running in Enterprise Manager).
There was an error (which I didn't record exactly - DOH!) along the lines of "could not obtain a lock on the model database, restore terminating abnormally."
I guess the create had model locked while it was creating the default objects, but what was a *restore* doing needing the model database anyway?

Any comments would be interesting.

Strange Error For Database Integrity Check Maintenance Job

May 16, 2008

Hi gurus:

I met a very strange problem recently. I set up a database integrity check maintenance plan. But this job failed every time. I looked into the logs, the error message was that Databases that have a compatibility level of 70 (SQL Server version 7.0) will be skipped. I used the sp_helpdb to check the version of the databases included in my maintenance plan. The sp result shows that all the databases are above version 80....

Even more strange, i can successfully run the dbcc check query on each database.

Any comment and suggestion will be very appreciated.

Strange Error On Linked Server - Cannot Open Default Database

Apr 16, 2007

Hi,We have 2 servers. Server1 is a 2000 box, with SP3 (yes I know it isnot up to date). Server2 is a 2005 box, SP2.I set up Server1 (2000) to have a linked server to Server2 (2005). Thereason I did this is because we are using a stored procedure onServer2 to send mail, as we have found that using mail on 2000 doesn'talways work as advertised.When I set up the linked server on the 2000 box, for security I justset it up to use a SQL Server user on the 2005 box. The SQL Serveruser on the 2005 box has permissions to run the stored procedure forsending mail.Here's the weird thing though. When calling the stored procedure onthe 2005 box from the 2000 box, sometimes we get an error that "Thedefault database cannot be opened", and the query does not run on the2005 box. However, it only happens *sometimes*. Other times, the queryruns fine.Since the problem seeemed to be with the default database, I changedthe SQL Server user on 2005 default database to the SAME database thatcontains the stored procedure.However, I just don't understand why it's even TRYING to open thedefault database, since when we called the linked server we are doingso as, and it's referencing the default database in the name:EXEC Server2.DefaultDatabase.dbo.StoredProcedureNameHowever, after changing the user's default database to"DefaultDatabase" as shown above, the query runs fine.Why are we having this problem? That is, if I change the defaultdatabase to something other than "DefaultDatabase", then the querydoesn't run, even though the database name is referenced in the abovequery??Obviously, this is not desireable, because that means we can only runqueries that are in "DefaultDatabase", which may not always be thecase.Thanks much

Error Connecting To Database - Please Help

Oct 11, 2007

When i am trying to connect to SQL Server(Express edition) on production server i am getting the following error.
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No such host is known.)" My SQL connection string is like this which i wrote in web.config.
<add key="conn1" value="Data Source=xxx.xxx.x.xxxyz,1433;Initial Catalog=abcdef_xyz;persist Security Info=true;User ID=xx;Password=xxxxxx"/>
string constr = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["conn1"]; SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(constr);
con.Open();
When i searched microsoft help to resolve this error, it suggested me to enable TCP/IP protocol for SQL server, i did that, but even after doing that i am still not able to connect to the database. Could any one please tell me what else i need to configure in order to connect to the database.
Thanks

Error Connecting To Database?

Sep 7, 2005

Hi Again,I have MSDE on ASP1.1 on a PC and have a logon page that uses a stored procedure to check my auth_user table, if logon and password exist then it returns (1) else returns (0).I used objparams.return to pick up the returned value and either server.transfer to opening page or label text message 'login not valid'. This is insde a try and the catch is another label, 'cannot connect to database'.Running on my local PC all is fine, transferred SP and table to hosting server, along with web.comfig set to the host servername, uid, password and database. On the host server all errors messages are returned. I have created a connection in my VS7 database manager to the remote host and the same happens after amending my connection string to run on the remote server.It clearly is the connection string, I am using the <appsettings> add Key to connect as I thought it would mean no change of coding in my pages when moving from Dev PC to Server. I have checked the hosting server setup and used the server name associated with the database (mssql3.securedc.com) , checked uid, password and database settings. Is there something I have missed like permissions, specific security settings on the host server (I have to go through a third party as the hosting is done through a friend of my client)?? Many thanksEarle

Error In Connecting To Database

May 19, 2015

I've remoted into our domain controller which houses our SQL database. From there I've been using the Microsoft SQL Database manager to run queries. However, I would prefer to do this from my desktop and not have to remote in whenever I need to look something up. I've found that Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 can create a connection where I can do my work. I've created the connection (or I believe so). "Testing the connection" is successful and in the Database Explorer window I can see my database and the folders of tables, views, etc. However, all of these folders are empty..When I choose the database everything in the settings pops up and I use the same authetication I use on the domain controller..

Error Connecting Database Server

<add key="conn2" value="Data Source=xxxxxxxx;Initial Catalog=xxxxxx_xxxxxx;User ID=xx;Password=xxxxxx;"/>
Could any one please tell me what else the configuration settings i need to do in order to connect to the database from my application.

Connecting To Database - Object Reference Not Set Error Message

Feb 11, 2005

I've got code that on my own machine (visual studio .net 2003 and iis and sql server all exist on this box) works great. I display my test page, which loads a dropdownlist on page_load. This works great on my own machine.

When I move the code to our dev environment. Web server and database servers on separate boxes. I get the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when i try to open the connection to the database. I thought it had to do with permissions and I check all through sql server and everything looks great. I then thought it was the connection string. I still haven't ruled this out, but I wrote a quick vbscript app to attach to the database and try to pull a record. The vbscript worked fine. So, the code works fine on my computer, but not on the web server. The connection does work with vbscript, but through my asp.net web app I get the "object reference" error.

All code below...

ASP.NET webpage:
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{

if( !IsPostBack )
{
// Create a command object for the query
string mySelectQuery = "select id from vw_abcd order by ID";

SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand(mySelectQuery,sqlConnection1);
sqlConnection1.Open();

DropDownList1.DataSource = myCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection);
DropDownList1.DataBind();
sqlConnection1.Close();

RangeValidator1.MinimumValue = "1";
RangeValidator1.MaximumValue = DropDownList1.Items.Count.ToString();
}
}

Connection string on my machine:
workstation id=wXXXXXX01;packet size=4096;user id=testuser;password=testpass;integrated security=SSPI;data source=wXXXXXX01;persist security info=False;initial catalog=TestDB"/>

Connection string on web server:
network library=DBMSSOCN;data source=xxx.xx.xxx.xxxinstance1;user id=testuser;password=testpass;initial catalog=TestDB

vbscript:
Dim connConnection, rstresultset
strConnectionString = "driver={Sql Server};server=xxx.xx.xxx.xxxinstance1;user id=testuser;password=testpass;database=TestDB"

Set connConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

connConnection.Open strConnectionString
Set rstresultset = createobject("ADODB.Recordset")

rstresultset.ActiveConnection = connConnection

rstresultset.Open "select id, comment from testtable", connConnection

msgbox rstresultset(0)
msgbox rstresultset.Fields(0).Value

Error message and stack trace:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionPoolManager.GetPooledConnection(SqlConnectionString options, Boolean& isInTransaction)

Any ideas what's going on?????

Error Connecting To Report Server Database After Several Installs And Uninstalls Of SSRS.

Mar 20, 2008

I've had some problems with Reporting Services and getting connected to the database server after configuration. I am now getting the following error message:

The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) (rsRPCError)

In my Database Setup everything runs fine when I click apply except for the Setting Connection Info for Reporting Server this has a yellow triangle with a ! and says that the report server cannot access internal information.

I also have not been able to Initialize as there are no instances to initialize and none are created when I go through setup. Is there something I need to delete from the registry or the file system that does not get removed upon uninstall?

Thanks.

Strange Error

values in it. When this CompanyID is not NULL, ie for example it is
202, then when i press the update button it allows me to update
perfectly in the database. However if the CompanyID is NULL,
and I try to update the companyID, to lets say 202, the application
just crashes with the following message:- System.InvalidCastException: Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. I tried to set some breakpoints in the application to debug, however it does not even pass through these breakpoints! Any ideas on what the problem can be or how I can debug? Some Strange Error

Aug 3, 2006

Hi,

In my package I am executing 8 'Execute package' tasks which calls 8 different packages. All these tasks are indepent so they are not connected to each other. In each package I have defined a variable at the start of each package there is a script task to assign the 'StartTime' system variable value to the user defined variable.

If I run the tasks individually, it is running without any problem. When I am running all the tasks in the parent package, very often the package fails and each time different different tasks are failing. But the error happens at the script task which is used to define the start time. The error message is 'Error: The script threw an exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.'. But inside the script task, I have only one statement which assigns the system start time value to the user variable. Also, in my log file, I am getting 2 entries for all the tasks in that failing child package, but I have not specified any looping in my parent package. One more peculiar thing is even though as per the log entry it ran twice, no single record is inserted/updated(????).

Anybody have any idea of this problem?

Thanks.

Strange Error

Apr 25, 2006

I am getting the following error when I try to debug a package that needs to Copy Columns from an AS400 database into SQL 2005:

[SQL Server Destination [1684]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E14. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E14 Description: "Could not bulk load because SSIS file mapping object 'GlobalDTSQLIMPORT ' could not be opened. Operating system error code 2(The system cannot find the file specified.). Make sure you are accessing a local server via Windows security.".

Has anybody seen this error and what do I need to do and check for?

Thanks for the information.

Strange SQL CLR Error

Oct 30, 2006

Hello,

I am running the code below that simply adds a row with two values to a Table. When it is run, it gives me the following error:

A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user defined routine or aggregate 'InsertCurrency':

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_Sales.Currency'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.SalesCurrency'.

This seems to indicate I am adding a duplicate key, however I have confirmed several times that I am not adding a duplicate key.

Here is the code. Thanks for any suggestions about why this error is occuring.

<SqlProcedure()> _

Public Shared Sub InsertCurrency(ByVal currencyCode As SqlString, ByVal name As SqlString)

Using conn As New SqlConnection("context connection=true")

Dim InsertCurrencyCommand As New SqlCommand()

Dim currencyCodeParam As New SqlParameter("@CurrencyCode", SqlDbType.NVarChar)

Dim nameParam As New SqlParameter("@Name", SqlDbType.NVarChar)

currencyCodeParam.Value = currencyCode

nameParam.Value = name

InsertCurrencyCommand.Parameters.Add(currencyCodeParam)

InsertCurrencyCommand.Parameters.Add(nameParam)

InsertCurrencyCommand.CommandText = _

"INSERT SalesCurrency (CurrencyCode, Name) VALUES(@CurrencyCode, @Name)"

InsertCurrencyCommand.Connection = conn

'

conn.Open()

InsertCurrencyCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

conn.Close()

End Using

End Sub
