Strange Errors In Compiling Stored Procedures

Jun 29, 2001

Comiling a stored procedure produces the message

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]COUNT field incorrect

This is produced in Query Analyser and OSQL

Normal syntax error gives errors of the Form 'Msg 1234 line no. '

Introducing syntax errors to get a normal message still gives the Count field incorrect Message. There is no user COUNT field

Any ideas

Sysdepends And Compiling Stored Procedures In The Correct Order

Nov 9, 2000

Hello:

We are presently testing various upgrade scripts to our current application which is scheduled to shortly be upgraded to mssql 7.0. We are testing under mssql 7.0,sp 2.

As it works now, I receive some existing scripts that have been modified and some stored proceures that are new. For the existing stored procedures, I usually take my best guess as to what the order of creation will be, test it in my script for recompile(actually all are dropped first and then the guesswork on the creates). This is usually trial and error as I run the script, see any sysdepends errors such as:

"CREATE PROCEDURE: ep_invoiceheaderformat_spv0101
Cannot add rows to sysdepends for the current stored procedure because it depends on the missing object 'ep_assumepay"

And then move the order of the create procedures around in the script and try again until I get a clean run in a test database I use just to syntactically test the scripts.

I looked at the sysdepends table for the database and pretty much decided that the object numbers and stuff was pretty much incomprehensible to me.

Alternatively I could compile each one separately but I would have the same problem subsequently trying to generate a script of the al of the create procedures... in the right order which would not

My question is:

1) Is there a way I can read and understand what the data means in sysdepends?

2) Figure out a way to utilize the data there to create or generate the create stored procedure text in the correct clean compile order?

3) Any other suggestions?

Any information which can be proveded will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Utilities To Check For Errors In Stored Procedures

Jul 20, 2005

I have written a utility that checks our stored procedures forpotentially incorrect code (eg = null as opposed to is null, unusedvariables/parameters etc). It also ensures that parameters/variablesetc match our naming conventions and data types/sizes are the sames asthe corresponding type in the database (if appropriate)Are there any other utilities that do this sort of thing?

Ignore Compilation Errors For Creation Of Stored Procedures

Apr 2, 2008

I have an application that is moving from an home made full text search engine to using the full text indexing engine of SQL 2005. I have a stored procedure that I want to behave as:
check documents table to determine whether a full text index for SQL's full text engine has been created.
If it has not, query the documentText table (which is the table for my in-house full text search)
If it has, use the full text indexing engine

My problem is that compilation of the TSQL to create the stored procedure fails when the full text index has not already been created with the followign error:

Msg 7601, Level 16, State 2, Procedure My_FullTextSearch, Line 0

Cannot use a CONTAINS or FREETEXT predicate on table or indexed view 'Documents' because it is not full-text indexed.

In my test lab, I tried:
1. creating the full text index
2. creating the stored procedure
3. deleting the ful text index
which gets me to the desired end result of having a stored procedure that can determine whether or not the full text index has been created yet (the procedure works in this state). But I creating this index as part of this stored procedure creation in production is not an option.

My question - Can I somehow tell SQL to ignore the compilation errors it encounters while creating this stored procedure? If not, is there some other way to create this "smart" stored procedure?

Here's a code snippet stripped down to the bare minimum to generate the error:

CREATE PROCEDURE [My_FullTextSearch]

@Term VarChar(1000)

AS

BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON;

IF NOT OBJECTPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID('Documents'), 'TableHasActiveFulltextIndex')=1

BEGIN

Select [DocumentID]

from [DocumentText]

where [Term] like '%' + LTRIM(@Term) + '%'

END

ELSE

BEGIN

Select [key] from FREETEXTTABLE(Documents, Contents, @Term)

END

END

SQL Server Error 7405 While Compiling A Stored Proc

Jul 18, 2000

I am attempting to compile a stored proc that contains SQL statements that access databases across different SQL servers. I am getting the following error:

"Heterogeneous queries require the ANSI_NULLS and ANSI_WARNINGS options to be set for the connection. This ensures consistent query semantics. Enable these options and then reissue your query."

Does this mean that I need to put the necessary statements (Set ANSI_NULLS ON etc.) in my stored proc or that I need to configure my SQL Server differently somehow? I tried the former without success.

Thanks.

Strange Errors...

Jun 14, 2007

Hi Guys,

I'm having an odd problem with some SQL CE statements I'm trying to use.

SELECT [PK Product ID] FROM [tblProduct Header] WHERE ([Description] = 'World''s Greatest 3D Mug - 18th Birthday')

Gives me the error message:

Major Error 0x8007007A, Minor Error 0

> SELECT [PK Product ID] FROM [tblProduct Header] WHERE ([Description] = 'World''s Greatest 3D Mug - 18th Birthday')

The data area passed to a system call is too small.

But this query does not:

SELECT [PK Product ID] FROM [tblProduct Header] WHERE ([Description] = 'Worlds Greatest 3D Mug - 18th Birthday')

and nor does this:

SELECT [PK Product ID] FROM [tblProduct Header] WHERE ([Description] = 'World''s Greatest 3D Mug 18th Birthday')

It's as though SQL CE doesn't like a combination of single quotes and hyphens in the criteria. If I remove the quote, it works, if I put the quote back in and remove the hypen it works. The data I'm trying to look up is:

World's Greatest 3D Mug - 18th Birthday

So I really need to be able to look for text that contains both quotes and hyphens.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am getting a linked server connectivity errors randomly. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Strange: Continuous Login Failure Errors

Jun 5, 2007

I have SQL 2000 Server that had a database called ABC and it has been moved to another server on 5-15-2007
I kept ABC database in Read_only mode for few days (just in case) on old server and finally dropped it on 5-20-2007 and I think I forgot to drop the associated logins. I started seeing login failure for user 'xyz' in error logs
When I first noticed the login failure error in SQL Server log for login xyz, I deleted xyz login but it did not stop the errors.

I have been trying from then and no luck in identifying the cause/ resolving this issue.
I have ran SQL profiler trace and caught the user hostnames, NTusername in few cases and Application Name and contacted the Application owner & user (who are in the trace) to stop windows service/ schedule jobs..anything that is pointing to old server but the bad luck is they are not aware of anything running or pointing to old server. The worst part is the user whose hostnames are shown in the trace have never used ABC database and do not have any idea.

Here is what I found in the profiler trace:
TextData LoginName NTUserName HostName ApplicationName
Login failed for user 'xyz' xyz AB00007 WAB000007 Microsoft (r) Windows Script Host

Today I have created the xyz login in the server and assigned model database with reader permission to see if log some different error but nothing new (the same login failure error)
Finally, I had no solution other than restoring the ABC database back to my old server and set it in to Read_Only mode to stop these errors and Now I see the login 'xyz' firing the query against the database

* Any hint or pointers why this is happening and any possible solution on this?

Stored Procedures 2005 Vs Stored Procedures 2000

Sep 30, 2006

Hi,

This Might be a really simple thing, however we have just installed SQL server 2005 on a new server, and are having difficulties with the set up of the Store Procedures. Every time we try to modify an existing stored procedure it attempts to save it as an SQL file, unlike in 2000 where it saved it as part of the database itself.

Thank you in advance for any help on this matter

Script Tasks Not Pre-compiling All Of A Sudden

Aug 6, 2007

I've been building and running script tasks for years without issue. Then all of sudden last week Visual Studio starts showing the "Task is configured to pre-compile the script, but binary code is not found" error anytime I open a script -- even I make no changes. If I copy the dtsx package to another machine, the script compiles fine and I can see the binary data in the raw .dtx file -- so I know the code is correct.

I can also reproduce the error simply by adding a new script task, going into "Design Script", make no changes to the default code (which is basically one line: Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success) and simply press "OK" on the Script Task Editor.

I've been trying to find some VS setting somewhere that might stop the script IDE from producing the binary code, but I can't. It doesn't seem to be project setting, because all my SSIS projects are now suffering this problem on my main dev box.

Anyone experience this?

Newbie: Compiling A DTSx Package

May 16, 2006

I have now created a few simple SSIS packages. In BIDS I right-clicked on a solution and selected "Build". I went to the "bin" directory hoping to find a standalone ".exe.dll" file but found only a ".dtsx' file.

Can BIDS can actually build a standalone exedll or is the .dtsx file all that's available? (If so, I guess that another program is expected to invoke the .dtsx file.)

All My Stored Procedures Are Getting Created As System Procedures!

Nov 6, 2007

Using SQL 2005, SP2. All of a sudden, whenever I create any stored procedures in the master database, they get created as system stored procedures. Doesn't matter what I name them, and what they do.

For example, even this simple little guy:

CREATE PROCEDURE BOB

AS

PRINT 'BOB'

GO

Gets created as a system stored procedure.

Any ideas what would cause that and/or how to fix it?

Strange Stored Procedure Result

As you can tell from the procedure, i copy some records into a report table, do some modifications, and then send the results to the browser. But all of a sudden, i'm getting timeouts on all my users.
But here is the strange part, when i take the above code and run it using Query Analyzer, it works. And then after that, my users are OK running the clients for about 1 week. And then it starts acting up again.
Everytime i run the code in Query Analyzer, i have no more problems for about a week. Weird isn't it.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Richard M.

Strange Stored Proc Behavior

Jun 23, 2000

I have a stored proc with the following two lines of code:

Select @SumCredits = (Select Sum(CreditAmount) From AccountBalanceList WITH (NOLOCK) Where (AccountRowId = 2000) And (DocDate >= '1/1/1900' And DocDate <= '12/31/2099'))

Select @SumDebits = (Select Sum(DebitAmount) From AccountBalanceList WITH (NOLOCK) Where (AccountRowId = 2000) And (DocDate >= '1/1/1900' And DocDate <= '12/31/2099'))

If I execute this stored proc via Query Analyzer, it will take about 11 seconds. If I execute the above two SQL statements indiviudally within Query Analyzer, each takes less than a second (the entire stored proc should take about a second). This hasn't always been happening. Just recently this behavior started occuring - after we imported a large amount of data into our database. However, I don't know if the two events are related.

Has anyone ever noticed this type of thing?

Strange Stored Procedure Issue

Jan 8, 2005

Hi

I have this problem that has me banging my head on the wall :(

I have a stored procedure - has a cursor & a temp table in it.

Problem is - it works, but it will only run once.

If I close the query manager page & open a new one it will run again - giving the output recordset. When calling it from an ASP page - it runs fine once, then returns an empty recordset. If I kill the ASP sessions - it will run again - but only once unless I kill the ASP sessions again.

I did a test to return the @@Fetch_status and it is coming back -1 on any second attempts to run the procedure per session. But, at the end of the procedure I close the cursor and deallocate the cursor.

Any clues on why this cursor would still remain alive when the procedure is recalled by the same session?

Many thanks!

Strange Timeout Problem When Executing Stored Proc

Jul 27, 2004

We have a stored procedure that will return at most about 600 records. In almost all cases it works fine, but in a few odd cases the command times out when used from a webform. We changed the CommandTimeout property to 120 seconds... no difference. If we run a query that times out in Query Analyzer, it runs in under 3 seconds (on the SQL Server machine). We also did a lot of profiling, and for any page that runs fine, the query takes about the same time when called from a webform and run in the Query Analyzer.
We ran our tests on the pre-production environment with absolutely no one else on the machines. We also created a test page that just fills a DataSet. Straightforward... get connection object, create command, set params, create data adapter, fill dataset. It suffers the same problem.

The web server and SQL server are two separate machines. Oh, and before I forget... This is SQL 2000. It used to run SQL 7, and all the queries there were (slightly) slower, but none timed out, not even the ones that do now.

Maybe the first question should be:
How can it be that a query that runs fine in Query Analyzer times out from a webform?

Strange Datetime Conversion Error In Stored Procedure.

Jul 23, 2005

Hi Everyone,I've been battling this for two days with no luck. I'm using SQLServer 2000.Here's the mystery: I've got a stored procedure that takes a singlevarchar parameter to determine how the result set is sorted. Here itis:CREATE PROCEDURE spDemo @SortField varchar(30)ASSELECT dtmTimeStamp, strEmpName, strOld, strNew, strActionDescFROM ActivityLogORDER BY CASE @SortFieldWHEN 'dtmTimeStamp' THEN dtmTimeStampWHEN 'strEmpName' THEN strEmpNameWHEN 'strOld' THEN strOldWHEN 'strNew' THEN strNewWHEN 'strActionDesc' THEN strActionDescENDGOWhen I execute the stored procedure in the Query Analyzer, it worksperfectly ONLY IF the @SortField parameter is 'dtmTimeStamp' or'strNew'. When passing in any of the other three possible values for@SortField, I get the following error:Server: Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Procedure spDemo, Line 4Syntax error converting datetime from character string. Now instead of executing the stored procedure, if I copy and paste theSELECT statement directly into the Query Analyzer (after removing theCASE statement and manually trying each different value of @SortField),it works fine for all five possible values of SortField.Even though the error points to Line 4 of the stored procedure, itseems to me that the CASE statement is causing problems for some, butnot all, values of the @SortField parameter.Any ideas? Thanks,Jimmy

Strange Problew With User Defined Function Or Stored Procedure

Jul 23, 2005

I am trying to add a simple case statement to a stored procedure oruser defined function. However when I try and save thefunction/procedure I get 2 syntax errors. Running the query in queryanalyser works fine and a result is given with no syntax errors. Ibelieve its something to do with the spaces in the field names. Not mychoice as its an existing system I have to work around. Strange Results When Calling A Sql Stored Proc From Within An Access2000 Project

Nov 18, 2006

Hi,I have written a stored procedure which includes a DATEPART command, i.e.DATEPART(weekday, <date>)The result when ran from SQL Query Analyser is as expected . i.e. Sundayreturns 1, Monday 2, etcWhen the same proc is called from within the Access 2000 project Sundayis returned as 7, Saturday as 6 instead of 1 and 7 respectively.Basically the same stored proc returns different data depending on fromwhere it has been called. This is causing some issues obviously as the resulting tables andreports are showing incorrect data when presented in Access 2000.Has anyone else experienced this before or have any idea what may cause it.Regards,PB

Using A Stored Procedure To Query Other Stored Procedures And Then Return The Results

Jun 13, 2007

Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB  multiple times. One of my SP is:SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived,     I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, S.Name AS 'StatusName', S.ItemDetailStatusID,    S.InProgress as 'StatusInProgress', S.Color AS 'StatusColor',T.[Name] AS 'TypeName',    T.Prefix, T.Name AS 'ItemDetailTypeName', T.ItemDetailTypeID    FROM [Item].ItemDetails I    INNER JOIN Item.ItemDetailStatus S ON I.ItemDetailStatusID = S.ItemDetailStatusID    INNER JOIN [Item].ItemDetailTypes T ON I.ItemDetailTypeID = T.ItemDetailTypeID However, I already have StoredProcedures that return the exact same data from the ItemDetailStatus table and ItemDetailTypes table.Would it be better to do it above, and have more code to change when a new column/field is added, or more checks, or do something like:(This is not propper SQL) SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived,     I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailStatusInfo I.ItemDetailStatusID, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailTypeInfo I.ItemDetailTypeID    FROM [Item].ItemDetails IOr something like that... Any thoughts?

How To Save Stored Procedure To NON System Stored Procedures - Or My Database

May 13, 2008

Greetings:

I have MSSQL 2005. On earlier versions of MSSQL saving a stored procedure wasn't a confusing action. However, every time I try to save my completed stored procedure (parsed successfully ) I'm prompted to save it as a query on the hard drive.

How do I cause the 'Save' action to add the new stored procedure to my database's list of stored procedures?

Thanks!

Stored Procedure Being Saved In System Stored Procedures

Apr 7, 2006

We recently upgraded to SQL Server 2005. We had several stored procedures in the master database and, rather than completely rewriting a lot of code, we just recreated these stored procedures in the new master database.

For some reason, some of these stored procedures are getting stored as "System Stored Procedures" rather than just as "Stored Procedures". Queries to sys.Objects and sys.Procedures shows that these procs are being saved with the is_ms_shipped field set to 1, even though they obviously were not shipped with the product.

I can't update the sys.Objects or sys.Procedures views in 2005.

What effect will this flag (is_ms_shipped = 1) have on my stored procedures?

Can I move these out of "System Stored Procedures" and into "Stored Procedures"?

Thanks!
