I am quite new in DTS and I want to calculate the length of a string. I am trying to use ActiveX script - Java Script and here is my code
if(length(DTSSource("MaNo")) ==5). It parse fine but when I run a test it brings an error "Error Description: Object Expected"
Please help
I need to write a query that tells me which string values are empty orblank in a table.Is it possible to return the length of the string contained in characterfield?

I create a dataset from a sqlce 3.5 database (I drag-dropped the tables of the database on the DataSet).
And when I try to put a text with more than 4000 characters in the dataset, it throw me an exception ....
--> I tried to insert this text directly in sql ce and it works well! So I think that the DataSet has a limitation?? But the maxlength of the string coloumn of the dataset is set to 536870911
Do you have an idea about this problem?

Now if i select data using the query below the txtcol field displays only 255 characters :

I have a few columns in table with default value defined as zero length string (''). I want to insert record from DetailsView which uses SqlDataSource as DataSource. In the ItemInserting event, if the data is not valid, I want to use zero length string for the column. But I always get Null instead of zero length string. The code in ItemInserting event looks like this:
If objddl.SelectedIndex > 0 Then e.Values("myFld") = objddl.SelectedItem.ValueElse e.Values("myFld") = ""End If
The line: e.Values("myFld") = "" put Null in the column.
How can I set a column as zero length string using the SqlDataSource?

Hi,
I am trying to use DTC to import about 500 records from an Excelsheet to an SQL database.
Some fields contain strings with a length of about 1700 characters.
When i'm trying to execute the DTC generated code it is giving an error and saying that the maximum string length of 255 has been reached. Althoug the column in the database is defined as nchar(1750).
Does anybody know an answer to this problem ?

SQL 2000.I need a query that will search a field in the table that is 14characters long and begins with a number.I have a client that was allowing people to store credit card numbers,plain text, in an application. I need to rip through the table andreplace every instance of credit card numbers with "x" and the last 4digits. I am getting a long concatenated string from a query (CTVALUE1) and have to use the string in where clause by parsing every 6 characters..

after parsing I have to use these values in a where clause like this

Now ,the values can change I mean the string may give 5 values(6 character) today and 10 tomorrow..So the parsing should be dynamic.
When I use for instance:

FORMAT(BegDate,"dd.mm.yyyy")
FROM TABLE1
result is - |BegDate|22.12.2013.......................|
Is there any way to limit length of string returned from FORMAT function .

I have a sp which works fine from my local database.
I move the procedure to a different database and modify it to access my data via linked server and I get the following:
provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production" returned message "String data, length mismatch".
Msg 7421, Level 16, State 2, Line 27
Cannot fetch the rowset from OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production". .
Now I've seen references to this error message for ODBC, but as I said above, the same SP works fine if it goes against local data views. I am working with rather long concatenated strings using nvarchar(max) as the data type.
I've tried cast() on just about everything to no avail.
Anyone have any other ideas?

I'm having a problem with the XML Source data flow component not transferring the length attributes from an XML Schema to the column attributes of the output table.
An example schema that I have is:

When I reference file in the XML Source data control, it correctly infers that there are two columns, but the length of the strings in the columns are set as 255.
This behaviour appears to be at odds with the SSIS documentation (SQL Server Integration Services/Integration Services Object and Concepts/Data Flow Elements/Integration Services Sources/XML Source), which states (highlighting mine):
When the data is extracted from the XML data file, it is converted to an Integration Services data type. The XSD or inline schema may specify the data type for elements, but if it does not, the XML Source Editor dialog box assigns the Unicode string data type (DT_WSTR) to the column in the output that contains the element, and sets the column length to 255 characters. If the schema specifies the maximum length of an element, the length of output column is set to this value. If the maximum length is greater than the length supported by the Integration Services data type to which the element is converted, then the data is truncated to the maximum length of the data type. For example, if a string has a length of 5000, it is truncated to 4000 characters because the maximum length of the DT_WSTR data type is 4000 characters; likewise, byte data is truncated to 8000 characters, the maximum length of the DT_BYTES data type. If the schema specifies no maximum length, the default length of columns with either data type is set to 255. Data truncation in the XML source is handled the same way as truncation in other data flow components. For more information, see Handling Errors in Data.
Has anyone had any luck in getting string lengths automatically extracted from an XML document? If so, where I am going wrong?

when I am trying to perform below query,

FROM EMPLOYEE_LANDING;
I am getting Invalid length parameter passed to the LEFT or SUBSTRING function.
I'm running into this error message when passing in a few records in particular to a function, the only difference I could find is that these recods have about 60k characters on the field that I'm passing to a function.
is there a max lenght for passing to a function?
select function ( field) as results
It's been working fine until today and all of the related fields are declared as nvarchar(max)

For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.
The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "¶mname=value&parm2=value..." format.
The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:

paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)
The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.
THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!
Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!

I am trying to narrow down this problem. Basically, I added 3 columns to my article table. It holds the article id, article text, author and so on. I tested my program before adding the additional field to the program. The program works fine and I can add an article, and edit the same article even though it skips over the 3 new fields in the database. It just puts nulls into those columns.So, now I have added one of the column names I added in the database to the code. I changed my businesslogic article.vb code and the addarticle.aspx, as well as the New article area in the addartivle.aspx.vb page. The form now has an additional textbox field for the ShortDesc which is a short description of the article. This is the problem now: The command parameters.length is 9 and there are 10 parameter values. Right in the middle of the 10 values is the #4 value which I inserted into the code. It says Nothing when I hover my mouse over the code after my program throws the exception in 17 below. Why is command parameters.length set to 9 instead of 10? Why isn't it reading the information for value 4 like all the other values and placing it's value there and calculating 10 instead of 9? Where are these set in the program? I'm trying to load a flat file (text) into a table with 83 columns in it. The record length on the flat file is 251 characters long. For some reason when running the DTS import utility, DTS can't read the past the 142 character on the flat file, it spills on to the next line. The red bar is set on the 143 character when i use the fix field options in DTS import. Can the red bar be moved out further? Or is there a max field length using DTS?
anyone out there that can help?

I am having a problem with the execution of a query.This is how it is working,if i include all the clounms(26 columns) for the output of 34,000 records it is taking around 4 Min. but if i exclude one column or reduce the size of the column i.e from text to varchar(100) it is taking 23 Sec.
If i am trying to change the size of the column from varchar(100) to varchar(150) it is taking the same time i.e, 4 Min.
Looking at this i am wondering if there are any system setting where we can increase the size of the rows for the out put or are there any other things i have to look at to increase the speed of the Query.
Did anyone come across this problem.
Any help is appriciated.

Hi,
I am sending the output of a query to a file and unfortunately every row is containing only a certain number of characters. My query has rows having length of 1500 characters for each row. When I get the query and send it to a file I am seeing only the first 250 characters for each row instead of 1500 characters.
I will be grateful if anyone can help me suggesting a solution for this problem.

SQL Intrduction book on page 269 says that the max.amount of data contained in a single row is 8060 bytes. But I have no difficulty creating a table with two varchar 8000 columns. How can this be ? Can somebody explain how to interpret the statement about max.8060 bytes please?

Has anyone come across SQL Server giving errors like A row on 'page 52995' was accessed that has illegal length of 0 in database? I believe that it is due to some data on the page has been corrupted. Is there a way to prevent such problem? Can daily backup be able identify such problem?

When writing a stored procedure,sometimes the line of sql code could be very long and be more than 128 caracthers.
I got an error message saying that the code is vey long and the maximum is 128.
But at the same time, this is erratic in MSSQL server because it works sometimes even with a line of code of more than 800 caracters...
Have you ever experienced the same problem??

I am creating a piece of code to create audit tables based on my current tables. I'm using the info in sysobjects to get this done, but I have one problem.
I can't seem to find the actual lenght of a column, I tried with the systypes.length, but that was obviously not what I needed. Does someone know how (or where) I can retrieve the length that I need?
