Sql Table Data Stroring Based On Varchar Primary Key

Jan 17, 2008

Hi,

I have a Users table that I use for membership. I am using username varchar(30) as the primary key for this table since username will always be unique.

The question I have is regarding how SQL Server actually stores data:

I see that when I add users, they are always stored alphabetically sorted on username.

I was expecting that all users will appear on the users table in the order they were added.

Example: I have 3 users (john, jonah, wilson). Now I added 4 user with username='bob'

If I execute select * from users, it returns me (bob, john, jonah, wilson). Look bob has become the first row of the table.

My question: Is Sql server moving 3 older rows to make room for 'bob' and it is also rebuilding part of the index due this new username 'bob'?

If this is the case, then it will have big impact if I have 100K users and I add one user that becomes firstrow. In that case 99,999 rows will have to move.

Bottom line, insert, delete will be very expensive.

I know sql server keeps data physically sorted on PK. But I am concerned here since rows are losing the order in which they were inserted.

Thanks

Uploading Images To Sql Server

Aug 22, 2003

Hope someone can help with this.

i am trying to upload images from an asp.net or vb.net front end to a sql server db.
I can upload the image fine if I first save the image to a file and then upload but my question is whether I can upload the image without first saving the image file. What i would like to do is to capture an image with a digital camera and without saving it first (an extra step for the user), upload it to a sql server db.

Is this even possible.

Thank you,

SQL Server Images To Webpage

Apr 26, 2005

Hello,
I am trying to put on a webpage a picture with a discription, however when I create an MxDataGrid and run the page all the info in the datagrid is correct except the image. All that is in the field is "System.Byte[]".
I am new to web programming but I have created many databases and using Access as a front end where this process is very straightforward.
Can anyone tell me how I can make this work?
I want to store images along with other info about the image in the database so that I can simply query the database and have the page fill from the query.
Thanks

SQL-Server 2000 And Images

Nov 1, 2007

Hello everyone,

I have a problem and I do not know what way to go:

We have a large amount of images that we need to store (large amount is more that 1.000.000), the logical question is, whether we shall store them in the database, or we should store them separate on the file-system, and place the filepath and filename in the database.

Some articles say that SQL Server 2000 will get performance problems with this amount of images stored in the database, others say that it should be no problem.

Can someone please give me a advice?

Best regards,

Problem Storing Images In SQL Server

Jan 17, 2007

So what's the secret to getting images in and out of a SQL database?  There's lots out there about this, but I cant seem to get any of it to work...
I have a table, named Attachments and among other columns I have one called Attachment.  I've tried using both image and varbinary(max) data types, both with the same results.
I have an sproc with the following code:
INSERT INTO Attachments (Attachment) SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK 'c: est.bmp', SINGLE_BLOB) AS BulkColumn
That seems to read the file and create a record.  If I move the file, yeah it complains it doesnt exist...  If I "show data" on the table, there is a new record and under Attachment, it says "<Binary Data>.  t seems to be there, but who knows for sure...
So in an aspx file, I have the following:
myConnection.Open();string SQL = "SELECT Attachment FROM Attachments";SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand(SQL, myConnection);byte[] bytePic = (byte[])myCommand.ExecuteScalar();
When I run it, it errors out on that last line with "Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type 'System.Byte[]'.
With the use of "DBNull", it sure does seem the SQL is coming up emtpy handed, eh?  If I change the SELECT to AttachmentId (an identity field), it says it cant cast a "system32" - which makes sense...  Any ideas whats going on?  Many thanks!!   -- Curt

Sql Server 2005 And Images Suggestions???

May 24, 2006

hi,
i am working on a website that will be storing millions of images. i have read various advantages/disadvantages of saving the images on sql vs. file system.
i would like to keep all the data in one location (sql server in this case), so what i had in mind is following:i am going to save the original image data on a sql server. now, the website user can view a (multiple) thumbnail version(s) of the original image and the orig. image itself, so instead of getting the original image from sql and resizing it everytime, i was going to create a file(s) on a sep. server with the resized image(s) that would be called instead (think of it as file-cache). this would reduce the load on the sql server drastically since all the thumbnails (and orig. image) would have the file version of themselfes and would be loaded from the separate server. this way i could have all my data on a sql server, have thumbnail images on an "image server" and everything should be fine with the exception of the increased disk space. Also, i would not have to worry about having 2 backups since i have all the data on sql and each image/thumbnail would be file-cached on it's first call. if the file-cache of the image is not available for whatever reason i would just load straight from the db.
i would appreciate any suggestions on this.
thanks :)

Inputing Data/images Into SQL Server

May 13, 2000

I am creating a SALES database on SQL Server. I have been inserting the data into the tables (without using SQL statements) in the Enterprise Manager by going to the relevant server group - click on Databases - clicking SALES database - right click ORDERS table and select "open table" - "return all rows". The ORDERS table opens and I enter the values manually.

Is it all right to enter numeric and text data this way?
Is there a similar way for storing images or do I have to use SQL statements when it comes to inserting images into the table?

SQL Server 2014 :: Images Not Rendering

Aug 31, 2015

I have developed some reports on SQL Server 2014 SSRS including some Data Bars and Sparklines. The solution files are stored on the server which is Windows Server 2012R2. By default this server runs IE11. The development environment is Visual Studio 2012 (had to install this as SQL 2014 did not arrive with BI tools SSDT).Just to let you know the default IE version running across local network is IE9. Apparently this can't be upgraded because of a number of application compatibility problems.

When I debug the report locally the images render fine under IE9, but when I deploy the reports to report server and then run from there I get image icons appearing instead of the images themselves. Now, I can click F12 to view the web options; it shows IE9 (compatibility view) and Document Mode = Quirks. No matter which combination I apply, for example IE9 view & Doc Mode = IE9 Standards, I still cannot render the images correctly.

I have heard that you cannot downgrade Windows Server 2012R2 from IE11 to IE9 as it is released with IE11 as standard.even if running SQL 2012, and is there perhaps a siple workaround that I may have missed?

How To Import Exported Images From SQL Server

Mar 31, 2008

Hello,

Here is my problem:
There is some data which we need to move from a vendor database to our Oracle database. The vendor has provided us with the exported data from their database. The data is in a text file with some delimiters to identify where each column value ends.

One of the table columns extracted has an image. I dont have real image files, but I have the image in the exported format (hex value - something like 'FFD8FFE000104A46494600010001009600960000FFFE001...". Now I need to import this as a image into a LONG RAW or BLOB column in Oracle database. But it is not possible to do so in Oracle, so we have planned a work around for this.

1) Import the data back into SQL Server
2) Export the actual image files(.jpeg or .gif) on the desktop
3) Import the image files from desktop to Oracle database.

The text file that contains table information has rows like below.
2~jones~jenny~j~bad show~1989-05-14 00:00:00.000~304303F.......
(last value should go into an image column)

I would like to know how to import such hex-stored image data into image column in database table. I have tried to direct import using BULK INSERT, but doesn't work.

I would appriciate if someone can provide some working code as well, which shows how to achieve the above functionality.

Thanks.

Storing Images In Sql Server 2005

Jun 5, 2006

Hi There

I have not had much luck finding info in BOL.

I have a directory with many images, i need to load these images into sql server. We want to staore them in the database instead of the file server.

What is the best way to do this? TSQL (i am hoping), .NET code or maybe even SSIS ?

I have been reading what i can find in BOL basically all i know so far is that image data type will be no more in the future and i should use a varbinary(max) data type.
Basically i need a good link or something that can demonstrate how one can go about loading images into Sql Server 2005.

Load Images Into Sql Server 2005

Jun 5, 2006

Hi There

I have not had much luck finding info in BOL for tsql or SSIS that tells one how to load images on the file system into sql server 2005.

All i have really been able to find is that IMAGE data type will not be used in future and that one should use a varbinary(max) data type.

I am thinking of using a for each file loop in SSIS, but then how do i load the images (.tif) into a sql server database table ? Perhaps i need to use a sql task with the filepath , or an active x script.

Anyway if anyone knows how i can load images from the file system into sql server 2005, please let me know.

Thanx

Storing Images And Files In Sql Server An Alternative?

Feb 3, 2006

Hi,I was wondering what anybodies feelings on storing images and files in SQL server express 2005?I am guessing it is a No No...If this is the case what are the best practices for achieving this?Would something like a table which held the "real name of the file", "a unique identifier" do the trick...hence in code (c#) i could create a GUID for the unique identifier maybe??? and then upload the pictue or file to a common directory and name it with the unique identifier rather than its real name. This means that i could potentially hold a different file with the same name i.e. no conflictsMy app is a sort of HTML editor in asp.net (all html is stored in the db) so if i do upload a picture using a GUID or uniquee identifier then if somebody saves teh image from a webpage then it would be called uniqueIdentifier.jpg which is probably what i don't want.So the only other idea i had was to create a directroy within my site which I would name with the unique identifier and upload the pics and files with thier real names into this directory. Hence each document would have its own directory so there would be no conflicts with filenamesAny advice or comments really appreciatedThanks in advanceIan

After having stored the images in the db, I guess that the are displayed on my web pages the same way as all text information (by writing something like <%=rs("image_column")%> ).... Anyway first I need help with how to store imgs in the database...

Extracting Images To Disk From Community Server

Feb 3, 2008

I posted this question in the Community Server forums, but thought I would try here as well...

I am trying to use SQL Integration Services (SSIS) to dump out the images from Community Server and I'm getting zero length files. Here's what I'm trying....

I have a Data Flow Task with an OLEDB Data Source with this query (The TOP is for testing purposes) :

SELECT Top 10 cs_Posts.Body, cs_Posts.PostDate, cs_PostAttachments.FileName, cs_PostAttachments.[Content], cs_PostAttachments.ContentType,
cs_PostAttachments.ContentSize, cs_Post_Categories.Name
FROM cs_Posts INNER JOIN
cs_PostAttachments ON cs_Posts.PostID = cs_PostAttachments.PostID INNER JOIN
cs_Posts_InCategories ON cs_Posts.PostID = cs_Posts_InCategories.PostID INNER JOIN
cs_Post_Categories ON cs_Posts_InCategories.CategoryID = cs_Post_Categories.CategoryID
WHERE (cs_Posts.ApplicationPostType = 64)

Then I have an Export Column Transformation set to export cs_PostAttachments.[Content] with cs_PostAttachments.FileName as well the file name. Ultimately I'm going to break the filepath all down into folders by the category name, but for now I'm just trying to get the export working.

Anyway when I run it I end up with files with the right names, but they are all zero length files.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-p
