Stuck Between Failed To Generate User Instance And An Attempt To Attach...failed

I wrote an application using Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 which uses a SQL Express .mdf file, included in the project, for the database. After installing Visual Studio 2005 RC and the SQL Express that comes with it (I followed all of the uninstall instructions first) I can no longer add a SQL Express database to any of my projects, nor can I open the SQL Express database in my original project. When I try either of these tasks, I get the "Failed to generate user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I read the thread which dealt with this error, and changed the connection string for the database file that had worked before to User Instance = false. The moment I click Test Connection or OK, I get the error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:<path to project>EngSQL.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (<path to project> is actually a full path, I didn't want to type the whole thing out. :) ). A search for this error turns up a solution of setting User Instance = false, which puts me in a catch 22 position.

Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order. I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem.
I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista. If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine. If I specify the test database in app_data folder, I get the following exception:-

I am taking a guess it's somerthing to do with access issues, but can't find anything out on searching the forums etc..
I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine.
Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt.
Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.

As a starter i tried to modify and translate the Personal Website Starters kit from the VS2005Team SDK.
When i'm working on the machine were it's installed , under debugging, all works great.
But when i try to develop from my laptop, via RDP on the develop machine, i've got this message and can not debug (connect to the SQLxpres Server)
Does anybody now a solution ??

my web app was working fine but as soon as i added in a page and few store procedures and 2 tables it just pop up with that error message.

i did go into the folder C:Documents and SettingsdnguyenLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Datasqlexpress and delete the directory but this didnt help much. I still get the same error message. please help

Hello everyone,
I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.
Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:
in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."
If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:
"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.
I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?
All this happens on local machine.

I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?
I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.
My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.

No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum.
€œFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€?
I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again.
I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it.
SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients.
What is causing this?

I'm developing my website in my docs. Once I get a version that is stable I move it over to inetput/wwwroot. When I login to my site it says it failed to generate a user instance.... for (Server)/aspnet. However, I have specified a username / password in my connection string. Any ideas?

Hi,
I am using a logon control on my site that is supposed to display an erro message when user id or password is wrong. Instead, when I enter the wrong password, I get:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
when I trace the code, I see that the loginbutton_click event gets fired, it failes to validate the user id/password by checking DB, and sets the error label's text property to the error message and the dies with the above error message.

I have seen many posts on the subject, but I haven't seen a clear answer to the following:
1. Start a new Web Project (VS 2005 Pro). The solution is built.
2. Select App_Data, right click and select Add New Item.
3. In the dialog box, select SQL Database and give it a name.
4. When you select Add, the message "Failed to Generate User Instance of SQL Server ... " appears.
5. I am running SQL Express. What is the correct fix to get this simple process to work?

I have a VB.NET 2005 windows based application that uses the Enterprise Library Data Access Application Block and SQL Server Express and I am having an issue getting the application to install and run from a Setup Package.

I have SQL Server 2005 SP1 Dev Edition installed on my laptop along with Visual Web Developer 2005. I installed SQL Server Express 2005 SP1. I then created a new web site using the Club Web Site template.
I did the recommended initial build to get the Membership database installed and got an error page (http://localhost:1667/WebSitesVB2/):
SQLExpress database file auto-creation error: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
There were 4 recomme4ndations from the error page. I have met three of them: (1) the AppDaa folder that was created when I used the Club Web Site template; (2) my machine's ASPNET user set up with full control permissions on the APP Data Folder; (3) SQL Server Express successfully installed on my machine.
The 4th recommendation from the error page is "The process identity for the web server account must have a local user profile. See the readme document for details on how to create a local user profile for both machine and domain accounts. ". I have no idea of how to do this or how/where to find the elusive the "readme" file.
I am at a loss as to what to do next. I have spent the day going over forums on this error and none seem to provide consistent or relevant answers.

Basically I have had to change pc's so I copied and pasted my ASPNET.MDF and LDF from my old pc to new PC including webpages/apps etc.. created.

Just don't understand what permissions the db should have, does it need to match the SQL Express owner...

Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.

I get the following message after updating to sql server express 2005 advanced.
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
I noticed that in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLTemplate Data I have not databases? How do I get them back?
I also had to add back the aspnet to the permissions and the network and network service to the app_data folder.
Can any one help?

This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. I have a problem when I want to open a page with the database record. This page is created in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I try to open a page I get the following error message even though the connection between the database is ok:

I have a computer with Windows XP Professional running IIS 5.1 and ASP.NET 2.0. Also I have SQL Express on my machine. Does any one know how to resolve it.Thanks

When I am setting up the data source for the gridview tool, everything works fine and the test query works fine, but then when I try to actually test the output in the browser with Cntrl+F5 I get this error.
I have been trying for 48 hours to find a solution on my own. I have googled, I have searched everything and I just am at a point where I think I need to ask someone for help.

I've set up a website on another computer using sql server express and visual web developer express, and it works as expected. However halfway through the development i've had to move to another computer. I installed visual web developer express + sql server express, and copied the project files across, but now when I attempt to run it I get the error:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a
failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection
will be closed. I've tried reinstalling the software and it doesn't help. Any idea why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it?thanks

The last time I saved my Visual C# project, everything was functionning perfectly. Now, when I open my project, I have this warning on every one of my inherited forms. Hi,
I am stuck with that error when running my ASP.NET application on my production server for many weeks now and still don't have a complete solution to that problem.
I formerly posted that thread and read that other thread without success, so as I have made a few progress in delimiting the problem I am posting this new thread with the hope somebody will finally be able to help me.
To summarize:
1) I have developed an ASP.NET application,
- on a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer
- with VS studio 2005 Dev and included SQL 2005 engine
- this application works fine on the dev computer
2) I have deployed the application on a production server which is:
- a Windows 2000 SP 4 computer
- with SQL Express SP1 with Advance services installed
When I launch the prod application I have this error:
Login failed for user xxxxASPNET
I have found that I can bypass this error by doing the following:
1) manually attach my .mdf database with SQL Server Management Studio Express and specifying the field Attached as with myDatabaseName (in place of the default fullPhysicalPath/myDatabaseName.MDF) then detach it
2) change the auto generated connection string in web.config file from
<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|myDatabaseName.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
To
<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|myDatabaseName.mdf;User ID=sa;Password=mySAPassword;database=myDatabaseName" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
That would have been an acceptable substitution solution but unfortunately my
application also uses the new Login and Webparts features of VS 2005 which implies the automatic creation of an ASPNETDB.MDF database by VS.
As I have no mean (or at least don't know how) of modifying the associated Connection String for that database (it does not appear in web.config) I cannot bypass the problem for it and thus the error still appears when the application try to use this database.
Please I really need help on this matter, I can provide any other useful information as needed (logs, sources ...)

We are looking at developing an SQL Server 2005 Database and I would like to use Windows Authentication rather than SQL Server Authentication to connect our client app.
In our development environment, we have two Servers, one being used as a file server and the other as an SQL Server. We have now set up a domain using the file server as the domain controller. (We had previously been set up to use a workgroup).
I have set up an active directory group called SqlDevelopers and added an active directory user called Jonathan to it.
On the SQL Sever, in management studio, I have set up a new server login which uses windows authentication called DomainSqlDevelopers. I used the GUI to verify I could see the domain and the group.
The default database is set to a test database on the server. A user in the test database is mapped to the DomainSqlDevelopers and given the Roles dbo, db_datareader, db_datawriter.
To test the log in, on the server, I logged out as administrator and in as Jonathan. I could successfully access the server through management studio using windows authentication.
However, if I log in as Jonathan on my client PC and try to access the SQL Server using management studio and windows authentication, I have problems.
The first time I try I will get a timeout error. If I try again will get either:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection
Or
Cannot generate SSPI context
I can€™t determine any pattern to which of the above errors I get.
However, if I log in as administrator on my client PC, I can connect to the server using management studio and windows authentication.
Sounds like Active Directory/Domain or other Network issue (Not really my area). I would be grateful for any help.

DOH! When I rebuilt the OS, I changed the data partition ID's, and didn't remember to change them in the connetion strings
Not great, but better than continuing to bang head against wall.
Would like to say to MS appreciators that the VS2005 reinstall actually went quite well, considering.

I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.
Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)
I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).
The Connection strings are all of the form
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=(specific file string).MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.
The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.
The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.
I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.
So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:
Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...
Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.
So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.
EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:
I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.
I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.
Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.

I know allot of folks are having this problem and I tried lots of things but nothing works. I understand the problem is coping the SQL Express on another server is the problem - I just not sure what to do?

I checked my server forum and they said I had to name a database:
Example: Database=(unique name);
But this didn't work either.
I just tried a simple web project that has only one database and one table in SQL Express with one sqldatasource and one datagrid. It works fine on my pc but when I use the copy function in Visio Studio 2005 Pro - I can't run the site on the remote server: www.myjewelrydirect.com
I tried coping the database manually. I tried disconnecting the database before I copy it. Below is my connection statement:

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?
