Suggestions Needed - How To Setup A DB For Use With SQL 2005Express OR SQL 2005 Full?

Mar 21, 2008

Hello,
Background: I am a Software Engineer - not a DBA - with limited SQL knowledge (I know the SQL but not the configuration stuff)... I am sure others need this too - I tried but cannot find the answers online... please help me with a few questions:

Task: I need to find an way to install a database via Installshield 2008/command-line (silently), that is accessible locally and remotely regardless of what was already installed, and accessible only to our program - not users, so I am thinking use SA and a strong password since windows authentication may not apply with multiple users accessing this DB and they do not need to login on to the server - only our program does - sound right to use Mixed?).

Questions:
Can SQL 2005 Express be installed when SQL 2005 Full edition is already present?

Can SQL 2005 Express be installed without an instance name?
I think I read an instance name is required in Express, that if I do not provide it defaults to SQLEXPRESS -
So, if the prior question's answer is 'no, they cannot both exist'... prompting the next question:

If the Full version is already installed, should/can I use it - AND - can I add a New Instance silently via command line or ???

Any other ideas on why I can install 2005Express on one system, and not on two others (all 3 are development machines: VS 2005, SQL Express and that's about it)?
Currently I have figured out a command-line call to install - the command I came up with during testing is:
start /wait C: empSQLEXPR32.EXE /qb INSTANCENAME=CINST ADDLOCAL=ALL SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=STR2PWD4SA SQLBROWSERACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" AGTACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1 SQLAUTOSTART=1 AGTAUTOSTART=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 ERRORREPORTING=1 ADDUSERASADMIN=1
This looks like it might work for SQL Express 2005 - I do not have the full edition installed, yet - thus, this post.
The errors I got, shown in the summary.txt as 'Error 10' on one system with no other info.
My other system reports:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.3042.00
==============================
OS Version : Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Time : Fri Mar 21 16:45:25 2008

Machine : TONELSON
Product : Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)
Product Version : 9.00.3042.00
Install : Successful
Log File : c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0007_TONELSON_SQLSupport_1.log
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SQL Server Setup failed. For more information, review the Setup log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt.
...not much to go on as to why it is failing - maybe the hotfix:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGHotfixSQL9Express_Hotfix_KB921896_SQLEXPR.EXE
in the directory is blocking the install?

The goal is for my application to use the same connection strings regardless of 2005 full or 2005 express.

Need to figure this out -
Thank you,
Todd

Suggestions For SQL 2005 Setup

Sep 7, 2006

OK we currently have a single SQL 2000 Server for our DW with a DR SQL 2000 Server. We are wanting to create a setup where we have a Failover Cluster of SQL 2005 here at the main office with a DR SQL 2005 system at our DR site. My question is... How would you all do the failover and stuff? How many servers would I need and what would be the job/role for each server. Some things to take note we are implimenting a SAN in our network and we are also implimenting a Virtual Server system on our network. To my understanding you do not really wish to run SQL Servers on a Virtual machine if possible. So I am already planning on making the SQL Servers Physical systems. We are also planning on putting the DB's on the SAN and have the SAN replicate all the data to DR. So... How would you all invision things to be setup? Is there any good documentation I can read about this type of setup. Thank you in advance for all the advice you can provide.

Thanks,

Billy S.

2005Express Trying To Enable Full Text Indexing.

Nov 6, 2006

We have an installation of SQL2005 Express that was loaded via the "SQL2005Express with advanced services" download .exe.

Full text indexing wasn't enabled during installation.

It says to go to add/remove programs. Going that route when it goes to install FTI it says that it can't find the installation files in what looks to be the origonal "TEMP" folder created and removed during installation.

If I run the program installer from the download again it states that SQL is already installed and to use "add/remove programs".

We are stuck at this point. Is there an ISO available that could be burned to disk?

Thanks in advance.

Suggestions Needed

Sep 7, 2007

What I have.
I have a spreadsheet that is used in 4 or more locations on a daily basis by 1-3 ppl per locations. The spreadsheet is used to gather Quality Control information. So everyday there are a couple of spreadsheets from each system that is used to generate weekly and monthly reports. This is becoming to much work and I would like to automate the process.

What I have access to.
I currently run a Sharepoint 2007 Server for all our collaboration and document needs.
I also have the ability to setup any sql server.

What I want.
I want the QC techs in each system to be able to upload the data at the end of each day and be done with it. This way they do not have email or do a weekly report.
I would prefer to use Sharepoint and create reports weekly and monthly that can be pulled just by going to a site.

I'm knowledgeable in Sharepoint and Excel. I have some skills in VBA. I haven't dealt with SQL any, but willing to learn.
Also I'm knowledgeable in Microsoft Access as well.

Any suggestions on how I could accomplish this would be appreciated.

TIA

2005/2005Express SQLOLEDB Provider Problem

Aug 28, 2006

When creating a connection string in ADO (using Delphi7), I insert the provider like this:

Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=master;Integrated Security=SSPI;User ID=sa;Password=masterkey

Now, when I try to run this on a SQL Server 2005 or SQL2005 Express database, it won't create the connection
unless I use the SQLNCLI provider.

Is there a way to force them to use the OLEDB provider?
I have MDAC2.8-SP1 installed.

SQL Server 2005 Log Shipping And Subsequent FULL Backups That Are Needed

Dec 4, 2007

Afternoon,

I have a few Log Shipped DBs that are working great.

Currently they are set to fire off every 15 minutes 24/7.

My question is this ... I need to get FULL backups of the source DBs in order to restore them on certain Dev boxes.

If I were to execute the full backup on one of these Log Shipped DBs ... how would it affect the log shipping process?

Is there a special method to accomplish this?

As a side note, what would be some concerns/issues if in being able to create the FULL backups and not interupt log shipping, I were to create the backup using a 3rd party tool like Quest LiteSpeed?

I sure wish we were on Enterprise, then I could create a mirror and then snapshot off it to create my backups BUT ... that is not the case as we stand today.

Thanks

We have Dreamweaver and Crystal Reports available but I want toknow if these are suitable or if there are any recommendations forsomething I can pick up quickly.It will be simple reports based on complex queries (I can handle mostof this in SQL 7), don't need fancy graphs, just plain boringfinancial reports are what I need to produce.Obvious things I need to create are combo boxes and list boxes forselections. My background is more Delphi/VB and SQL than web basedstuff, so please let me know any recommendations or good places tostart looking.ThanksRyan

Generating Overnight Data Vs Live - Suggestions Needed.

Jul 20, 2005

We have an MIS system which has approx 100 reports. Each of thesereports can take up to several minutes to run due to the complexity ofthe queries (hundreds of lines each in most cases). Each report can berun by many users, so in effect we have a slow system.I want to seperate the complex part of the queries into a process thatis generated each night. Then the reports will only have to querypre-formatted data with minimal parameters as the hard part will havebeen completed for the users when they are not in. Ideally we willgenerate (stored procedure possibly) a set of data for each report andhold this on the server. We can then query with simpler parameterssuch as by date and get the data back quite quickly.The whole process of how we obtain the data is very complex. There arevarious views which gather data from the back office system. These arevery complex and when queries are run against them including othertables to bring in more data, it gets nicely complicated.The only problem is that the users want to have access to LIVE datafrom the back office system, specifically the Sales team who want toaccess this remotely. My method only allows for data from the nightbefore, so is there an option available to me which will allow me todo this ? The queries can't be improved on an awful lot, so they willtake as long as they take. The idea of running them once is the onlyway I can see to improve the performance in any significant way.True I could just let them carry on as they are and let them sufferwith the performance on live data, but I'd like to do something toimprove the situation for them.Any advice would be appreciated.ThanksRyan

Transaction Log Needed When Full Backup Is Done?

Apr 30, 2008

Please correct me if I am wrong with this:

I am using SQL Server 2000, when I do a backup I use the database maintenance plan at enterprise manager. I select my database and then I schedule the complete backup and transaction log backup to "everyday at 22:00:00"
My question is, do I really need to do the transaction log backup? If I am not wrong with the complete backup I can already recover all my data, the transaction log backup is useless if done at the same time that I do the complete backup, right?

Full-Text Setup And Search

Jan 1, 2007

Hi,

I have a database developed using SQL Server Management Studio Express with Full-Text searching. I can go into the Object Explorer and right click on my database and choose Properties, select File and the 'Use-full-ext indexing' is checked.

I'm not sure how I create an index for a table, can someone help? I want to create an index for table 'tblLogNotes' and have the following columns:

note_id = (PK, int, not null)
note = (varchar(3000), not null)
log_id = (FK, int, not null)
operatorid = (int, not null)
note_created = (datetime, not null)

I know I did something but not sure what I did, but on one of my tables, when I right click on table and choose 'log_note', I can see that Full-text Specification = yes, (is full-text indexed = yes), full-text type column = <none> and language = English (United States).

Table 'tblLog' has the following columns:
log_id - (PK, int - not null)
log_note (varchar(3000), not null)
tag_number(varchar(50), not null)

However, when I try the following query, I get nothing:

SELECT *
FROM tblLog
WHERE CONTAINS(Log_note, '"pump*"')

I've also tried: 'pump'

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

SQL Server 2005 Initialization Suggestions?

Jun 28, 2006

Greetings all,I have a SQL Server 2005 Database for a product based solution which needs to be initialized with some basic info before it get's shipped along with the product. For example, the default admin password and assigning it to the Administrator role (Membership API). Additionally some other application specific info.My first thought would be to create a command line utility which would be executed just once that reads a text file definining what needs to go where and blow this into an empty database. I discovered the SSEUtil which could be handy but I understand this tool works only with SQL Express.Can someone suggest a strategy for handling this scenario?Thanks in advance!

Sql Server 2005 And Images Suggestions???

May 24, 2006

hi,
i am working on a website that will be storing millions of images. i have read various advantages/disadvantages of saving the images on sql vs. file system.
i would like to keep all the data in one location (sql server in this case), so what i had in mind is following:i am going to save the original image data on a sql server. now, the website user can view a (multiple) thumbnail version(s) of the original image and the orig. image itself, so instead of getting the original image from sql and resizing it everytime, i was going to create a file(s) on a sep. server with the resized image(s) that would be called instead (think of it as file-cache). this would reduce the load on the sql server drastically since all the thumbnails (and orig. image) would have the file version of themselfes and would be loaded from the separate server. this way i could have all my data on a sql server, have thumbnail images on an "image server" and everything should be fine with the exception of the increased disk space. Also, i would not have to worry about having 2 backups since i have all the data on sql and each image/thumbnail would be file-cached on it's first call. if the file-cache of the image is not available for whatever reason i would just load straight from the db.
i would appreciate any suggestions on this.
thanks :)

2005 Perf Much Worse Than 2000... Suggestions Please..

Nov 20, 2006

I have this SP that takes several varchar columns and concatinates them all together then inserts them into a text field. I do this with a cursor which was the quickest way to get it done when it was setup...

However when I moved the process to a 2005 server (on the same physical server) the process drastically slowed down. On 2000 the process took about 7 min to handle all 350k+ rows with the processors hanging around 20-40%... On 2005 it took over 30 min (not sure how long it would take cause I killed the process) and the processors stay above 98%...

I have rewritten the process to use a while loop instead of the cursor (I wanted to do this anyways) and it had no effect. At this rate (about 1 row a second) it will take forever and this process runs everyday.

Any ideas??

Here is the procedure...

Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?

Hi guys, I have just set up a database in SQL 2005 Express Edition. However, I have a problem accessing it with the application program created in VB 2005 EE. Before using SQL 2005, the application worked perfectly in SQL 2000.
Here is my connection string used in SQL 2000:

Dim sqlConn As New SqlConnection("Data Source=(local); Database='Inventory List'; Integrated Security=yes")

Is this valid in SQL 2005 Express Edition? Or should I change the connection string instead? Thank you very much.

What Is The Best Way To Move My ASPNETDB.MDF From SQLExpress 2005 To Full SQL Server 2005

Apr 12, 2007

Hi,
I have an ASPNETDB.MDF (asp.net membership/profile db) that was generated for SQL Express, it has user information I need to keep.
I have SQLExpress and full SQL Server 2005 running on the server. I want to remove SQL Express from the server.
So can I simply do a backup of the SQL Express membership db and restore it to full SQL and change the connection string in my app or
do i need to run the membership wizard on full sql and then do the backup / restore?
Or is there another way.
Thanks

Proxy 2005 - A Little Help Needed...

Mar 8, 2006

As posted previously, thank you in advance...
--------------------------------------------

We have a reverse proxy for rs 2000 -> a client requests a report, it (the proxy) then goes out to the rs box, gets the report, encrypts any return urls and feeds the modified html to the requesting client. I understand this isn't necessary anymore with rs 2005 due to the architecture. Question is, when I use the ReportExecutionService.Render method it is still returning the parameters for the report, and not the ReportSession, ControlID, Controller, etc. parameters which hides the actual return values on the href links of the report.

Documentation is plentiful for rs 2005, but examples are not. Can someone please explain to me if using the new features in rs 2005 to hide the parameter values from the users is possible via web request? Making the parameter values completely and entirely (even via sniffer) is absolutely a must (which is why we are currently encrypting return URL's).

My code:

ReportExecutionService rs = new ReportExecutionService();
rs.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
ParameterValue[] pvValues = null;
DataSourceCredentials[] credCredentials = null;
ReportParameter[] rptparamRequiredParams = null;
ParameterValue[] pvReportParameters = null;
ExecutionHeader execHeader = null;
ExecutionInfo execInfo = null;
rptparamRequiredParams = null;
string sHistoryID = null;

{fill parameters block}

rs.SetExecutionParameters (pvReportParameters, "en-us");

try
{
string extension;
string encoding;
string mimeType;
Warning[] warnings = null;
string[] streamIDs = null;
byte[] result = rs.Render (sFormat, sDeviceSettings, out extension, out mimeType, out encoding, out warnings, out streamIDs);
string d = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetString(result, 0, result.Length);
HttpContext.Current.Response.Write (d);
}
catch
{
// do stuff
}

My code is returning:
http://henneseyjm1/ReportServer$sql2005?%2fJH.RSReporting%2fBAG&cy_start_date=1%2f1%2f2006&cy_end_date=3%2f1%2f2006&region=RG20&entity_num=nothing&proc_ctr=nothing&office_num=nothing&render_format=htm&view_name=standard&group_id=0&server_name=http%3a%2f%2flocalhost%2fJHnet%2f&user_is_office=False&rs%3aParameterLanguage=&rc%3aParameters=Collapsed&rc%3aToolbar=False

Where I would like it to return:
http://localhost/Reports$sql2005/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd?ReportSession=iyvsxg45vhzwd2acii3jj4q4&ControlID=de367546-919a-4f67-be4d-cd2747166dca&Culture=1033&UICulture=9&ReportStack=1&OpType=ReportArea&Controller=ClientControllerctl161&PageNumber=1&ZoomMode=Percent&ZoomPct=100&ReloadDocMap=true&EnableFindNext=False&LinkTarget=_top

SQL 2005 Replication Help Needed

Apr 12, 2007

Hey all

I am in the process of implementing transactional replication.

Site 1 : Sql server with 3 Databases

lets just call them DB1 to 3

Site2 : Sql server with 1database

DB1 replicated from site 1

Site 3: Sql server with 1 database

DB2 replicated from site 1

Site 4: Sqlserver with 1 database

DB 3 replicated from site 1

site 5: Sql server with 1 database

DB1 replicated from Site2

I need to know how to go about this

Site 1 will be Publisher/Distributor

Site 2 will be subscriber from site1, but site 2 needs to replicate the same DB down to site5, can site 2 be subscriber and distributer

Site 3 and 4 will subscribe to site 1

The various sites must also be able to update the DB back up to Site 1

The things i need info on is the security settings

The servers are stand alone servers and dont have active directory

Need info on how to configure the Various service accounts, must they be windows accounts.

Is there any content i can read up on to help me on this

Hope all this info helps

Any help would be Great

Thanx a lot

SQL 2005 Setup

Apr 20, 2006

I recently installed SQL 2005. During the setup, I didn't get the option that makes me add the licensing module I'm using. I don't want to be slapped in the wrist by microsoft. After setup, how can I check the licensing used?

James
