Suppress Automatic Rendering Of Reports On Startup

Dec 19, 2007

Hello,

We're using Reporting Services for lots of different reports at the moment.
Some of these reports are quite big with thousands of pages.
To speed them up I'd prefer using snapshots, but if I do so, it is necessary to defined a default-set of report parameters.

Unfortunately most of the reports parameters are query based, therefore I cannot choose a default parameter set for startup.
If I start one of my reports it always displays the whole bunch of data and it is rendered immediately after clicking the link.

I have two ideas how this problem can be solved, but I don't know if MSSQL Reporting Services supports my ideas

1) Suppress automatic rendering on report startup somehow. Is it possible to set a parameter somewhere to suppress this "feature" ?

2) Use query based parameters to limit the default startup parameters to only a subset of the available data

Does anyone have an idea how this could be done ?

Best regards
Robert

How To Suppress Whitespace In A Drilldown For Textboxes That Have Suppress Duplicates Applied

Jan 30, 2008

I'm trying to suppress whitespace in a drilldown for textboxes that have suppress duplicates applied.

I have a matrix report that is showing whitespace in a drilldown because I am supressing duplicates. Based on what I read in other forums, if I set the ToggleItem to Len(FieldName)=0 that should supress the whitespace, right?

I can see that I have a field in the toggleitem called: Firstname. If I put the value Len(Firstname)=0 in the toggleitem property, then I get the error: The textbox 'textbox21' has Len(Firstname)=0' as a toggle item. Toggle items must be text boxes that share the same scope as the hidden item. I think the code 'Len' is throwing it off.

If I put the value "Firstname" in the toggleitem property, then it doesn't return the error, so I know that firstname is a valid value for toggleitem, but setting the value to firstname doesn't suppress anything.

If someone can tell me how to supress a textbox based on a value, then this may get rid of the whitespace I'm trying to suppress. Any ideas? Thanks...

Suppress A Row In A Table (mailing Address Report) - Suppress Like CR.

Mar 28, 2006

i'm retrieving addresses from a database and displaying them in my report. i have an addr line 2 for addition address data if needed. i have placed this addr line 2 on its own detail row. however i do not want that row to display if there is no data. the following is happening even though i have set the visibility on the row and text field to =iif(fields!addr2="",false,true)

the name prints on the first line, the main address on the second line, i have a space where addr line 2 would have been, finally i get the city, state, zip on the last line.

expected outcome i would like is that addr line 2 does not appear for those addresses that addr line 2 does not have any data. if addr line 2 does have data then print.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Changing Default Rendering Method Of Reports

Jan 29, 2007

Ladies and Gents,

I have a question with regards to the default rendering extensions for reports. I am using RS 2005 with SP1.

I am accessing a report as follows:

http://<ReportServerName>/Reportserver?/<Folder>/<Report Name>

Sample: http://TestServer/Reportserver?/Special Reports/Dealer Report

This displays the parameter bar and the view report button. When pressing the view report button, the report is automatically rendered into HTML 4.0. Is there a way to use the existing parameter bar and automatically render the report to a different extension (such as PDF) when the parameters are entered and the View Report Button is pressed.

Thank You for any advice you can give,

Raph

Trouble Rendering Lines On The Sides Of A Table In Reports

Mar 26, 2008

Hello!

I've been playing around with local reports for a while now. Trying to convert alot (about 800) reports made in a custom format(not XML) to the .RDLC used in MS Reports. I've been able to solve most converting problems by first figuring out how to make the different appearances of the report editor and testing, and afterwards implementing these in my converter program and testing until it makes the desired appearance on screen. Unfortunately I haven't been able to design all the reports similar to the originals(with the editor), so I was hoping somone here might be able to help me with this.

I'm trying to make a box around my table(the repeating part in the body) but find it kind of hard to do this. There are alot of data and the box should be on every page(I really hope this is possible).

I have made a simple report with a header and footer. In the header I have some textboxes and a horizontal line at the bottom. In the footer I have a horizontal line at the top, and som text at the bottom. This was intended for making the top and bottom lines in my 'box'. The rest of the box is made from two vertical lines, one on each side of the table in the body area of the report. These go down from the top of the body to the bottom.

The height of the header is 1 cm, the height of the body is 24.7 cm and the height of the footer is 4 cm making a total of 29.7cm (standard A4 paper height). Hope someone can help me solving this.

Greetings

Different Behavior Between VS And IE In Rendering Reports With Fixed Headers And A Document Map

Aug 6, 2006

I apologize in advance if this is something already addressed elsewhere (if so - please point me in that direction).

I have created a really simple report that allows 'drill-down' at the group level. To this report I also selected the 'Repeat header rows on each page' and 'Header should remain visible while scrolling' features and all worked as expected after deploying.

I then added a Document Map referencing the group level and that too worked within the VS environment. VS displayed a page that contained the requested group in plain view and I could 'drill down' as expected.

But when I deployed the report and subsequently pulled it up in IE I noticed a slightly different behavior in that when selecting an entry from the document map, the start of that group got hidden behind the fixed header such that what was visible was perhaps 1 or 2 group records down. I had to scroll up to see the start of the group I had selected from the document map and then drill down from there.

Removing both the "Repeat header..." and "Header should remain ...." allows me to select a group from the document map (which is always at the top) - but in doing so I lose the fixed header feature.

Does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Bob

Enabling Automatic ClickThrough/ Drill Into For Report Builder Reports Against A Model

Apr 4, 2007

Hello - I am having difficulty enabling the automatic click-through functionality for my model. I have two entities - Customer & Incident. Incident is a role/FK/OptionalMany relationship to customer.

I've read through earlier postings on this subject (below) and have verified that the #Incidents attribute in my incident entity has the EnableDrillThrough=true.

My test report is simple - Customer Name (from customer) and #Incidents (from incident). When I run it, the click-through option is not available (the cursor stays as an arrow and doesn't change to a finger).

Are there other properties or settings that I need to be working with? I have SP2 (9.0.3042) installed on our Standard edition of SQL 2005. I know Infinite Click-Through is not in Std edition, but a few levels should be, correct?

Thanks in Advance,

Toni

Dec 7, 2000

database : MS SQL server ver 6.50.201
problem: server startup / server time out
details
SQL server shows usage of 100 % CPU utilization, if started automatically / manually. and does not proceed / hangs up(server time out), but win nt operates extremely slow.

The background of the situation in brief is as stated below.
The errorlog was found to have the messages
warning : OPEN OBJECTS parameter may be too low.
Attempt was made to free up descriptors in localdes()
Run sp_configure to increase parameter value.

Error : 644, severity : 21, state; state 1

Action taken
I used the sp_option to increase the open objects from default 500 to 1000, and the LE threshold maximum value to 400 from the default 200.
after which I used reconfigure go and restarted the computer to take the effect. The following did work fine and server was working ok. But then from yesterday I am having the problem that the MS SQL sever is utilizing the cpu to 98 - 99 % and I am not able to connect to the server.
I tried to start the server with the minimal configuration by specifying the -f option in the service manager start up options, it showed the following message
00/12/07 10:40:49.73 ods Unable to connect. The maximum number of '5' configured user connections are already connected. System Administrator can configure to a higher value with sp_configure.
00/12/07 10:40:50.02 ods Unable to connect. The maximum number of '5' configured user connections are already connected. System Administrator can configure to a higher value with sp_configure.

afterwhich I tried with the option of starting the sql server with the option -c -f
which in the event detail of the win nt shows
"mesg 18109: Recovery dbid 6 ckpt(55813,8) oldest tras= (55813,0)"

The open procedure for service "MSSQLServer" in DLL "SQLCTR60.DLL" has taken longer than the established wait time to complete. The wait time in milliseconds is shown in the data.

The dbid is / was 6 for both the instances, the database which is having this dbid is database name "AM" and is having above 1300 tables (approx)
what could be the problem and solution for it?
kindly help me out of this situation.

I need to create a simple dashboard report that will be displayed on a large screen.

My problem is that there can be potentially more records than the screen can display.

Based on how i size my report the report can be a single page with a scroll bar or mutliple pages.

My question is: Is there any way of automatically looping through pages or to automatically scroll down through the records in SSRS

If anyone has any experience of something like this or suggest a work around in SSRS could you please let me know

Either Rendering Tiff Images In SRS Report Viewer Or Converting Tiff To Jpg Or Gif And Then Rendering

Jun 19, 2007

First of all, this is not in reference to using SRS (SQL Reporting Services) to render a report and then use one of the extensions to render the complete report as a pdf, tiff, excel etc. We have an opportunity to render a list of claims and then embed the supporting docs for each of the claims within the report. We don't have an issue referencing jpg and gif images via URLs and then rendering them within the report after the grid information. We do have an issue rendering tiff images within the report.

You can insert an image object into SRS at design time and have it render and you can convert a complete report to a tiff image but I cannot find a way to be able to render a tiff image when running the report. All you get is the red "x".

My question is has anyone encountered the same issue and, if so, what did you do to resolve the issue?

Thank you,

J Z

FTP Task: Suppress Error

Sep 18, 2007

Is there any way to suppress the whole package from failing when a file is not found while doing an FTP get (other then setting the MaxErrorCount higher)?

My situation is that I know what a file is named but the file may not exist yet on the server. So, I use an FTP task to do a Get on that file. If the file does not exist then the FTP Task increments the error count even if I force the ExecutionResult and/or ExecutionValue.

This wouldn't be a very big deal but I am looping to getting and processing multiple files. It's acceptable that the file does not exist, but I want to be able to have the package actually error in other places. So far, the only thing I can do to stop the package from failing is setting the MaximumErrorCount for the Loop and the Package which isn't going to cut it.

I am hoping there is away around this without having to use a 3rd party FTP Task.

Thanks,

-Ryan

SQL Way To Suppress Repeated Values

Feb 26, 2007

This is a problem I usually solve with procedural code, but I am wondering how/if it could be done with SQL queries.

A simple one to many query like:

Select inv.invnbr, inv.freight, invline.quantity, invline.partnbr, invline.cost from inv inner join invline on inv.id = invline.InvID

Returns something like:

invnbr freight quantity partnbr cost

100 50 3 abc 50
100 50 6 def 65
100 50 10 ghi 70

Is there way I can rewrite the query, or add a subquery such that the result set would be:

invnbr freight quantity partnbr cost

100 50 3 abc 50

100 0 6 def 65

100 0 10 ghi 70

Eg, the freight value, which comes from the one/header table, would show up in only one of the lines for invnbr 100?

Many thanks

Suppress Warning Messages?

Feb 13, 2008

I have a Derived Column transformation that pads some string fields with spaces, out to the field's maximum length using an expression similar to

rt_tran_date_bill + REPLICATE(" ",20 - LEN(rt_tran_date_bill))

This gives me a warning
"

Warning: 0x800470D8 at Merge Assessments and Invoices, Derived Column 1 1 [11661]: The result string for expression "rt_tran_date_bill + REPLICATE(" ",20 - LEN(rt_tran_date_bill))" may be truncated if it exceeds the maximum length of 4000 characters. The expression could have a result value that exceeds the maximum size of a DT_WSTR.

Is there any way to suppress the warning, or construct the expression so that it doesn't generate the warning?

In this example rt_tran_date_bill will never exceed 20 characters

Suppress Duplicates In Join Results

Sep 2, 2004

I really must be missing something here...

Trying to cross-update 2 tables.
Picture a checkbook reconcilliation without common check numbers. The checkbook has uniqueids and the bank has transaction ids but they are different. So the match is on date/payee and amount. So I wrote 2 checks to the same person, on the same day, for the same amount but forgot to enter one in the register.

when i run the update statement:
update b set b.bankid=c.myid
from checks c
join bank b on c.cdate=b.cdate
and c.payee=b.payee
and c.cost=b.cost

Both bank statement records would be updated to my one check record [can't happen]
Also: this will be running on a hundred thousand records per month with potential for duplication/ommission on either side.

What's a poor newbie missing??
I'm doing something similar on a lesser volume by running sequential statements through an ASP script but performance is poor. I know SQL can do this, just not how to approach it.

Thanks for any guidance

Suppress Output For One Column...SOLVED

Sep 14, 2006

Is there a way to supress output on one column in a SP, using data from the same row?

Like This:
SELECT Last, First, DOP, dbo.fnDueDate(DOP, 3, GETDATE()) AS NextQDue, dbo.fnDueDate(DOP, 6, GETDATE()) AS NextNSPDue, DATEADD(m, 1, DOP)AS InitialNSPDue, DATEADD(m, 1, DOP) AS InitialAssessDue, DOT, DisReason, DATEADD(m, 1, DOT) AS DisSummDue, Facility, Active
FROM dbo.tblResidents

But which returns null for some of the columns if DOT is not null?
DOT is the Termination Date, so the only columns that have any meaning once there is data in the DOT column are DisReason and DisSummDue. Also, if DOT *is* null, then the above columns also have no meaning.
I tried several variations of the following, but I can't figure it out

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spTesting] AS
BEGIN
SELECT Last, First, DOP, dbo.fnDueDate(DOP, 3, GETDATE()) AS NextQDue, dbo.fnDueDate(DOP, 6, GETDATE()) AS NextNSPDue, DATEADD(m, 1, DOP) AS InitialNSPDue, DATEADD(m, 1, DOP) AS InitialAssessDue, Facility
FROM dbo.tblResidents A
WHERE DOT IS NULL
UNION
SELECT Last, First, DOP, DOT, DisReason, DATEADD(m, 1, DOT) AS DisSummDue, Facility
FROM dbo.tblResidents I
END
GO

I thought:

SET NOCOUNT ON
at the begining of my proc would suppress the results, and then

SET NOCOUNT OFF
prior to my select on my temp table would do this, but the resultset of the loop still shows up in QA. It does suppress the count values on the message tab of QA, but that is it.

I tried something simple like:

SET NOCOUNT ON;
GO
SELECT * FROM [Contact]

And it still show the results in the grid

Any thoughts?
