All, if I were to write an app that has one task, determine whether or
not an SQL Instance is running, what would be the easist method for
this? I personally think that a query against the masterdb would do
the trick. I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

After capturing the SHOWCONTIG data, the sp runs a test query against the table to emulate a typical User report. I track the time this query takes. The query covers records over the last 7 days. (approx. 17,500 records involved). In addition, I track the time it takes Inserts to run. Inserts are done in batches from an external app. I get a RecordsPerSecond data point for each batch.

I wrote a custom IIS log reader windows service that reads and parses log data and periodically uploads it to a SQL server table which I run my reports from later. Currently I read the file by giving the absolute physical path name for the log directory followed by the log file name I anticipate depending on date/time stamps.
My question is: Is there a programmatic way to get the directory path which is configured in IIS to store the IIS log files to? We use non default location e.g. D:DATALOGSIISW3SVC1 or something similar, which might change from server to server. Also, I am not worried about the individual log file names but the directory. I would prefer a C# code example.

I'm creating ssrs reports via the web service render method & would like to be able to determine when a report has no data.
Currently what I'm doing is rendering the report twice - once as a pdf (the format that the report needs to be in) and once as a csv. I then check the csv for a specific string placed in the norows property of the report table.
Is there a better way of doing this? It seems to me that this would have been a good candidate to include in the warnings array.
Between this issue & the hacks required to get data into the header I'm thinking that I should maybe reconsider some other reporting options...

Ideally I am looking for a procedure that I can call in T-SQL to verify that the Log Reader, Snapshot, and Sql Agents are all up and running on a given server. I found the undocumented sp_MSrepl_distributionagentstatussummary proc and got it to work for the distribution agent. I also found sp_MSrepl_agentstatusummary, but I've yet to get this to work. Overall, I'd really like to have a better way to do this.
This absolutely must be something callable from the sqlcmd interface. It can not be through a UI nor anthing more complicated than standard T-SQL.
Any suggestions?

I am building an application that uses .NET 2.0 transaction feature. Since .NET 2.0 transaction model uses SQL Server 2005 Integration services for its operation, I want to check from my application (.NET 2.0 code) whether the Integration service is running on SQL box or not? Is there a way in which we can accomplish this task?

I€™m writing a web application which allows the user to kick off an existing data driven subscription (reporting services 2000), which runs from a table with parameters, paths, etc which the user has populated.
The subscription can take several minutes to run, during which time I need to prevent other users from attempting to run the subscription or alter data on the table driving the subscription.
All I€™ve found in the docs so far is
1. The ActiveState on the subscription.
This seems to have more to do with weather or not it can run than if it is running.
2. The status of the subscription.
This seems to only return €œdone: {0} of {1} with {2} errors€? Parsing this is likely to be too flaky to be acceptable.
I really need to move on this as soon as possible, any help is appreciated.

I am trying to call a SSIS package from a web service hosted on the same machine as the package file is sitting. The package is running fine from the Agent and also by the "Integration Services Project" in VS.NET.
I had a lot of problems with permissions but they are resolved, at least I have no error messages to point to that direction. Now I am getting these results:
1. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
2. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "bdn_cust" failed validation.
3. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
4. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "SourceConnectionFlatFile" failed validation.
Where \DiverMInputFilesdn_cust.txt" is a file processed by the package.

I am creating a custom control flow component in SSIS. The work flow of this component is to connect to File conection manager and after selecting the file it set properties of the file to variables. When i am runnning this component in SSIS , one method is calling i.e SAVETOXML. Here i am saving selected properties of the file to XMLby using XMLELEMent attribute. Its running fine. Here my question is where i can get that XML file. Where it is saving that XML file. From where i can Load that XML file. What is the use of LOADXML method.

I have visual studio 2005 with XP home. I'm trying to find out which service pack my SQL server is running as I've been told that Service pack 2 has a few bugs.
For example ADO Applications Report a Syntax Error When Column Names Contain Spaces. This appears to be an error i am recieving. I just wanted to confirm that it is a microsoft bug rather then something Im doing wrong.

I've been looking everywhere. I do not have the "query analyzer window" where you can find this out as I have VS 2005. How would I find this out.

Based on advice from this board, I am setting up our newly-converted DTSX packages (sql server 2000 (DTS) to 2005 (SSIS) package conversion) to utilize package configurations to make it easier to run them in multiple environments (dev, testing, production, etc...). This seems to be working just fine, but I now have another question.
We have approximately 12 DTSX packages which need to be executed in a specific sequential order. I was wondering what the best / most widely accepted method is to allow for running them as an automated process. If you double click on each DTSX file individually, the "Execute Package Utility" pops up, and you can run the package. I'd like to know the best way for us to be able to run each package, one after the other (each one waiting until the previous one completes before it begins), until they have all processed. It would be nice if it did not rely on SQL Server being installed on the machine on which it is being run...

In my environment, there is maintenance plan configured on one of the server and while running DBCC checkdb on a database of size around 200GB, log file usage of tempdb is increasing and causing the maintenance job to fail.
What can I do to make the maintenance job run successfully, size of the tempdb database is only 50GB and recovery model is set to simple. It cannot be increased as the mount point on which it is residing is 50GB.
If I start a long running query running on a background thread is there a way to abort the query so that it does not continue running on SQL server?
The query would be running on SQL Server 2005 from a Windows form application using the Background worker component. So the query would have been started from the background workers DoWork event using ado.net. If the user clicks an abort button in the UI I would want the query to die so that it does not continue to use sql server resources.
Is there a way to do this?

One of my stored procs, taking one parameter, is running about 2+ minutes. But if I run the same script in the stored proc with the same parameter hardcoded, the query only runs in a couple of seconds. The execution plans are different as well. Any reason why this could happen? TIA.

We have a web application (ASP) running on SQL Server 7.0.
Recently, the users are getting quite a lot of timeouts on
the database:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e31'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired
The database is not supposed to be doing too much work, so I can't
understand why these timeouts are occuring. How can I determine
the cause of the timeouts?
The cause could probably anything from a trigger that's taking
too long, a query that's taking too long, or simply bad database design.
I've looked at SQL Server's Profiler, but could not yet use it
successfully to give me any hints of what could cause the timeouts.
Any ideas of how I can use Profiler, Performance Monitor, or any other
tool(s) to see what is happening in the background in the database,
i.e. how much processing a trigger is using, etc.

I'm new to full text catalogs and we have a vendor who's code utilizes them. The database server is SQL 2005 and I am noticing the following message in the SQL log every minute.
Changing the status to MERGE for full-text catalog "ResearchCatalog" (5) in database "DBA_Test" (11). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.
A SQL job is running the following command every minute.
exec sp_fulltext_catalog 'ResearchCatalog', 'start_incremental'
What is the typical frequency for running an incremental?
Can the messages be suppressed?

It seems to be quite a feat to work out how much memory isactually being used by our server.I'm running W2K advanced server with SQL 2000 EE, 8GB of RAM, a min of4GB and a max of 6GB is assigned to SQL server.I'm trying to work out whether we've assigned enough or toomuch/little memory to SQL server. My first thought was to let SQLdymanically manage its own memory and see how much it uses, of coursewhen AWE (/3GB /PAE) is enabled it will just use all that isavailable.In perfmon "target server memory" = 6.1GB, "total server memory" =6.1GB, "total pages" = 768000 ( x 8KB = 6.1GB).My second thought was to use "total pages" - the average "free pages"= average mem used, therefore giving me the average amount of memoryused by SQL. I found out that SQL uses a min of 4GB (the min weassigned) and the max of all the memory, 6GB.Is there an easier way of finding out how much memory is actually usedin this situation or is going by the above average the best way?What i'm unsure about is will SQL just use all memory assigned to ituntil it has the whole DB in memory? 20GB including indexes etc....Any help would be greatly apprechiated.

Error on last command returns:
Computed column 'TempColumn' in table 'Readings' cannot be persisted because the column is non-deterministic.
Can someone please explain this to me? The same value is always being returned.
This does work:

Alter table Readings add [TempColumn] as (ReadingDate) PERSISTED NOT NULL;
I obviously want to do more things inside the function, but I can't get by the first step.

I have a report that has a table with detail grouping. This table shows the sales by day for each product. The users only want to see the date field for the first item in the group. After that, they do not want to display this field (to reduce the data on the report). However, when the data wraps to a second page, they want the date to appear on the first row of the new page.
Is there any way to determine if a row is the first row on a page?
I tried using the RowCount, but that continues from the previous page.
Any thoughts?

since I am kind o'new with SQL, I preffer get an advice fro you pro's: I created an application which performs access to a database on an SQL server. the application will be used by a few different users, each on a different computer. the application calls stored procedures, updatesinserts records in tables on the SQL and delete rows. what would be the best role to define the users activity ? How do I limit their activity ONLY to the specified actions ?
I'm working on a sproc that determines the next order id for a specified customer. The table has
custid int,
ordernum varchar(10)
Data is:
1000, 1000-001
1000, 1000-002
1001, 1001-001
1000, 1000-003
I need to know the next ordernum for the specified custid. For example, GetNextOrderNum(1000) should return 1000-004. GetNextOrderNum(1002) should return 1002-001 (since there aren't any orders yet).
I honestly don't know where to begin.

i am working with database mirroring and i need to be able to determine which database will be principal.
for example if server A is principle and server B is mirrored and server A is down, then server B take owner and become principle, after fixing server A i want it to be principle again,

What is the most reliable way to determine the last LSN of a database? I've looked in sys.database_files to no avail. I've also looked in msdb.dbo.backupset which is accurate but only based on backups already performed not the current state of the database.

I need to programmatically backup a database in SQL Server Express. I actually also need to programmatically restore it from a backup file. How can I do this programmatically? I know how to do simple ADO commands for simple db operations, but backup and restore sound like "meta" commands to me, and I don't know where to begin from.

I've done some searches but turned up nothing. This is the only thing I'm hitting a brick wall on at the moment; Books Online has been excellent in detailing how to create packages via code up to this point.
For the sake of argument, let's say I want to set the SqlStatementSource property of an Execute SQL task to this value:
"INSERT INTO [SomeTable] VALUES (NEWID(), '" + @[User:omeStringVariable] + "')"
What would the code look like?
