Mar 7, 2000Is it possible to switch back to SQL 6.5 after upgrading to SQL 7.0 using the tape method? During the tape upgrade the 6.x devices are deleted. Is there no backout plan?

In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? (2) When I use the .Fill Method, do I have to tell the SQL Server Management Studio Express to load and/or unload the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details"? (3) After I executed the "shcDataSet", should I Upload the 3 Northwind files back to the SQL Server Management Studio Express? Please help and advise. Thanks, Scott Chang

Server 2003 standard edition, MSsql 2005 standard edition
As I understand it server 2003 standard only supports 4gb. Does this mean I can only use up to 4gb as the maximum memory for server 2005?
If that is the case I would like to use the 3GB switch, and leave the other gig for other apps. If I set the 3GB switch in boot.ini do I then also have to enable AWE (which I can't seem to do) or can I forget about AWE altogether?

We have a service provider that handles the SQL database for us. And every month we will receive a Tape backup of the updated database from them for in house development purpose.
Anyways, I tried to restore the Tape backup I recently received and I kept on getting this error message: "The media family on device 'Tape0' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. Backup or resotre operation terminating abnormally."
I have set the Complete Database backup and the Overwrite option for this particular restore. Please help, any idea is apperciated.

Adding 3 Gig Switch

We have a standard Win 2K server and SQL2000 Enterprise edition on our DELL server.
Will it be possible to add a /3 Gig switch to boot.ini and make sql server to use 3 gig of RAM and the OS with 1 Gig of RAM.
This a live server website with heavy transactions more than 100 Transactions per minute.
We are planning to do a Transactional replication against 4 databases (publisher) with remote ditributor.
The reason why I am asking about this RAM increase is for this replication. Or is it Ok to have the 2 Gig RAM for this environment +replication.
Please give me a suggestion, how to proceed with this issue as i am concerned about memory especially for replication.
(4 Database sizes are 20 gig,7 gig,5 gig,5 gig)

Can't Restore DB From DAT Tape
Oct 30, 1998Just for background info: I am trying to take a backup of a DB made from a Server(#1) located on a client site and restore to a server that is in house Server(#2). Both servers are running SQL Server 6.5 and all configuration settings are the same except Server(#1) has (DB Lib Ver 6.50.213) and Server(#2) has (DB Lib Ver 6.50.201).
When I try to restore the DAT tape (backup made from Server #1) onto Server #2 I get these errors in this order:
1st --[DB-Library] Unexpected EOF from SQL Server. Connection broken.--
2nd --Error 605 [SQL Server] Attempt to fetch logical page 72915 in database 'DBname' belongs to object '0', not to object 'sysobjects'.--
Does anybody have any ideas and what could be causing these errors?
Would the different DB-Library versions cause these errors?
I know the tape isn't corrupt because the tape can be used to restore on Server(#1).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't grant any permission to user u1. So it will return a error message like The INSERT permission was denied on the object 't', database 'tempdb', schema 'dbo'
To my surprise, the "exec p1" command could run successfully..

ALTER TABLE SWITCH statement failed. Check constraints or partition function of source table "ScanStoreAggregateLoad' allows values that are not allowed by check constraints or partition function on target table "ScanStoreAggregateTest'.

On our Windows 2003 servers w. sp1 and running MS SQL Server 2000 w. sp4 we
see from time to time that we get this error "cannot allocate 64k
continous memory" or "SQL Server could not spawn process_loginread thread"
which could be caused by nothing left in the "Memtoleave" pool - I have now
search for advice on how to determine the values for the -g-switch - but
without much success - and if I just go for the "try&error" concept my
sql-server just allocates less and less ??? - ehh - in which units are the
parameters for the -g option specified - bytes, kilobytes, mbytes - 4k block
???? Any suggestions for measuring the actual running value of this pool -

So here's what I'm trying to do: I have three columns of data. Sometimes only one of the columns will contain a value while others may contain a null. If two or three contain a value it will be the same. So if I'm building a table in the layout designed and I want the value of the table to be the value stored in these columns. In pseudocode it looks like this:
Switch(column1 and column2 are null, value = column3, if column1 and column3 are null, value = column2, otherwise, value = column1)
Something like that where column1 is the default so if column 1 has a value then set the textbox value to it otherwise find a column that has it. I know that at least one column will definitely have a value. Anyone that can provide guidance on how to execute these I would appreciate it greatly.

Restoring A Database From Tape

However, the server itself has been backuped to tape. So I would like to restore this database from the server tape backup. If so, how do I accomplish this?

Mar 3, 1999I have a COTS database on MSSQL 6.5, no service packs...
I used sp_help_revdatabase to create the same database on a different server, using the same data and log device sizes and paths. I scripted the database, tables, stored procedures, and user defined datatypes, created them on the new server, and tried to restore a tape dump from the previous server to the new database. It would say "restoring", but then "DBLibrary is dead or connection broken", when I click OK to this message, it sais "restore complete" then the database appears grayed out and reads "loading".

Jul 2, 2001I am trying to backup a database to a tape. It works when it wants to. I get a 3013 error. The drive is fully functional. Seagate backup works fine. SQL Backup does not. I think it might be that the tape needs retensioning sometimes. Here is the sql statement: BACKUP DATABASE pubs TO TAPE='.ape0' WITH FORMAT. Is there a retension parameter I am failing to see?

In the query design mode in access I can make one of the fields an expression that is driven by a built-in switch function.
i.e. Switch([CategoryName] Like "Beverage","Drink",[CategoryName] Like "Cheese","Dairy")
This results in the additional column field I created to display "Drink" for each record that has the CategoryName = "Beverage", and "Dairy" for "Cheese".
Can I do something like this in SQL server in the view designer itself, or do I need to make a user defined function and call it?

Tape Backup Device Not Seen In EM

I have a SQL Server 7.0 with and exteranl SCSI tape device.
When I attempt to backup a database in EM the tape device is being greyed out.
I have add the backup device using sp_dumpdevice and made sure that it is in sysdevices table. It will not allow me to add this backup device from the drop down.
1. Why does EM not see this device ?
2. If I try to back this up using T-SQL will I be able to use the registared tape device.

May 17, 2007I want to create a backup device for the tape drive.
So I go in "Server Objects"=>"Backup Devices" and create a new device. Problem is: In "Destination" I can't select "Tape:".
The ntbackup.exe program recognizes the tape drive, but SQL2005 not.
I have this:
-SQL2005 Enterprise edition 64bit.
-Tape drive HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960.
Someone knows how I can create a backupdevice for the tape?

Tape Drive Not Detected
Feb 5, 2008I have a SQL 2005 Server (SP1) running on Windows 2003 server machine. Now windows can detect the tape drive attached to the system as 'HP StorageWorks DLT VS160'. Even 'ntbackup' detects it and is able to backup data to the tape drive. However, SQL Server is unable to detect the tape drive. The tape does not show up in the Backup Devices in Server Objects and hence I'm unable to take backups directly to the tape via SQL Server. How do I get SQL 2005 to recognize the tape drive?
