Synchronizing Foxpro .DBFs Data With SQL Server Tables (realtime)????
Mar 16, 2008
Is it possible to use SSIS to synchronize the data between a Foxpro .dbf and a compatible SQL Server table on a near realtime basis?
I have succesfully created an SSIS package that will insert data into the SQL Server Table but this is only useful for migrating data. What I need is a way to insure that the data in the SQL Server table matches that in the .dbf on a near realtime basis.
Or is there a way to link from SQL Server to the .dbf (similar to an Oracle DBLink).
Thanks for any and all assistance.....

I have several situations where I have values stored in multiple tables (yes, I know that isn't a good practice but it is my reality) and I need to make sure that they stay consistent.
The problem is, they can be (and frequently are) updated from both locations.
I was going to use an update trigger on each to update the other but I can see that causing potential deadlocks.
Surely I am not the first person with this problem but I haven€™t been able to find anything in the help files or on the forum.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Currently, I'm using the following steps to migrate millions of records from Foxpro tables to SQL Server tables:
1. Transfer Foxpro records to .dat files and then bcp to SQL Server tables in a dummy database. All the SQL tables have the same columns as the Foxpro tables.
2. Manipulate the data in the SQL tables of the dummy database and save the manipulated data into the SQL tables of the real database where the tables may have different structure from the corresponding Foxpro tables.
I only know the following ways to import Foxpro data into SQL Server:
#1. Transfer Foxpro records to .dat files and then bcp to SQL Server tables
#2. Transfer Foxpro records to .dat files and then Bulk Insert to SQL Server tables
#3. DTS Foxpro records directly to SQL Server tables
I'm thinking whether the following choices will be better than the current way:
1st choice: Change step 1 to use #2 instead of #1
2nd choice: Change step 1 to use #3 instead of #1
3rd choice: Use #3 plus manipulating in DTS to replace step 1 and step 2
Thank you for any suggestion.

Is SSIS a tool for extracting realtime data from staging to data warehouse? Realtime in my case can be loading every 15 minutes but no more than 30 minutes. I've a data warehouse which data refresh once a day and it worked fine. The data that I extract into the warehouse is from a Staging database which is realtime replication of multiple production databases. Once a day, I've to have replication pauses on staging for a couple hours to refresh the data warehouse. That's the only way so SSIS can pull the data correctly; if I've replication on while SSIS pull data, it will always copy less rows than it supposed to.
I cannot afford to have replication pauses every 15 minutes just so I can refresh data warehouse. Does anyone every have this problem? or any best practice how to do this?
Thanks,
-Ash

ISSUE: While synchronizing data between the PDA and MS SQL Server database, using Active Sync connection, the sync process fails at times and displays an empty error message box and occasionally it shows the following exception: Error During Synchronization: A native exception occurred. ExceptionCode:0xc0000005 ExceptionAddress:0x01627b28 Reading: 0x1e000000 OK to terminate CANCEL to debug Moreover the .SDF file on the PDA gets corrupted. The ActiveSync connection drops as soon as the sync process fails. Later when the .SDF file is deleted and restored the synchronization is successful. Note: The replication monitor in the SQL Server indicates that the synchronization was successful even when the above error occurs.

Hi,I have 2 tables (let's call them tableOld and tableNew) that I'm trying to synchronize. The tables may or may not be on the same server (I'm not sure - let's assume they're on different servers).Given below is the table structures:******************************************************************************* tableOld ------------- tableOld uses a View to access name information.View name = vwUserDetailsColumns in View = Firstname, Lastname, Fullname tableNew--------------- ProjectManagerID (PK, int, not null) <-- autogeneratedFName (varchar(50), null)LName (varchar(50), null)Inactive (int, null) *********************************************************************** Basically, I'm trying to write a script so that when a user runs the script that will do something like this: 1) it will add all the names in tableOld to tableNew (only if they don't already exist in tableNew)2) if there is a name in tableNew that does not exist in tableOld (because the name was deleted from tableOld), tableNew will set Inactive = 1 for that name. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.P.S. Is there a way the script can run automatically any time a user adds or deletes a name from tableOld?

Hi
I am trying to synchronize two tables on different servers, the one with me with the one is australia.
I have a table called MeriesHBMem on both databases and the one with me gets updated everyday, and then i have to use a program called SQL Delta to synchronize all the new rows. How can i go about doing this using SSIS?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I though about using a trigger for this, but i don't know how to go about connecting the two servers in the trigger's SQL statement, and besides i also think that a trigger will be a huge performance issue.
Data gets inserted into the table, all i want is a SSIS package to execute every 30min or so and take the new data and insert it into the other database's table
Kind Regards

Scenario regarding SQL 2000.
I have the same table on 2 different servers, Server R and Server L.
This table schema is:
ID int not null
Name varchar(50) not null
Password varchar(50) not null
IsUpdate int not null default (0)
People has an application that enables them to change their passwords in the table on Server L.
There is a for update trigger in the table on server L that sets IsUpdate column to 1 when any password has been modified.
The required scenario:
- Synchronizing passwords in the table on server R with passwords in the table on server L.
- Then setting the IsUpdate column in the table on server L to 0 again.
What is the best technology for that?
Please send me a code proposal.
Many Thanks and Best Regards,
Bishoy

Hi everyone,
I have worked soley with Sybase for almost ten years! Now I have been tasked with converting a bunch of data currently in a FoxPro database to a Microsoft SQL Server database. Short of writing some routines myself (which I don't mind doing), is there a shortcut for doing this? Any specifics would be great as it seems this could be mind boggling as far as dates go and so many other things!
Thanks so much!

I have a product where we feed an SQL 7 DB data collected from Manufacturing. Presently, the Data transport Program is in charge of getting prepared data from machines and inserting into the DB. This design assumes SQL7 is always ready and able - which is not true due to customer queries or backups or etc. consuming resources. There is a low level buffer in system at manufacturing level if transport dies, but transport is ignorant of SQL distress, so keeps hammering DB's frontdoor. I'm looking for help in putting SQL server in charge of allowing data in - when resources are adequate. Seems I need a function that can determine server stress QUICKLY to forestall transport program and a buffer for records at the transport layer. Anyone know / done a system where SQL server CHECKS for waiting records or OK's an external program to send until told to stop? What indicates (reliably) low server resources? Anyone ever used MSMQ?

I didn't want to maintain similar/identical tables in a legacy FoxPro system and another system with SQL Server back end. Both systems are active, but some tables are shared.
Initially I was going to use a Linked Server to the FoxPro to pull the FP data when needed. This works. But, I've come up with what I believe is a better solution. Keep in mind that these tables are largely static - occassional changes, edits.
I will do a 1 time DTS from FP into SQL Server tables.
I then create INSERT and UPDATE triggers within FoxPro.
These triggers fire a stored procedure in FoxPro that establishes a connection to the SQL Server and fire the appropriate stored procedure on SQL Server to CREATE and/or UPDATE the corresponding table there.
In the end - the tables are local to both apps.
If the UPDATES or TRIGGERS fail I write to an error log - and in that rare case - I can manually fix. I could set it up to email me from within FoxPro as well if needed.
Here's the FoxPro and SQL Server code for reference for the Record Insert:
FOXPRO employee.dbf InsertTrigger:
employee_insert_trigger(VAL(Employee.ep_pk),Employ ee.fname,Employee.lname,Employee.email,Employee.us er_login,Employee.phone)

Hi, I have developed a software which is to run on multiple PCs on a network sharing the same database on an inhouse server. There is another database which has some similar tables that sites on a server where the website is. I need to have the common tables synchronized. How is this possible and what issues will I have in doing this?
Well there be a problem if the synchronization happens when someone is using our software which is making some changes to that table at the same time? Or if someone on the website is entering some information that updates the database?
I am using Visual Studio 2005 with C#. Access Database.

The DTS works perfectly when I run it manually. However, when I run itas a job it fails. Before you ask if i'm running it under differentsecurity context. I have already made sure of that. I was logged intothe server through remote viewer, when I created and ran the package,as well as scheduling the job. So the accounts they're running underare consistent. Windows XP Pro - Sql Server 2005 Management Studio (current) - current visual foxpro oledb driver
I have an origin data folder with many foxpro dbf files
When I go through the "wizard" to import data from the origin folder using the "free table" option, I can locate the folder just fine. The form shows me a list of the files in the folder - but I cannot scroll through the list.
When I select the folder and continue, I test the connection and get a message that it is fine.
Then I go on to actually import tables. The list that is presented of tables that I can import does not include all the dbf files in the folder. There are 207 files in the origin folder, but only a fraction (about 120) of those show up in the list as candidates to be imported. I cannot see a pattern to the ones that are excluded from the list.
Does anyone know what could be causing this strange behavior?
Thanks.

I have several database files, all in the same directory. I want to write SQL statements that access two databases at once. For example, if only one database would be involved, I would write:
SELECT Test_Source_ID_column, Data_column
INTO Test_Destination_table
FROM Test_Sources_table
The above query copies two columns (Test_Source_ID_column and Data_column) from Test_Sources_table into a brand new table called Test_Destination_table.
Now the above query is fine for both the old and new tables being in the same database. But what if Test_Sources_table is in file Old.dbf and I want the new table Test_Destination_table to be in New.dbf?
Both Old.dbf and New.dbf are in the same directory. Therefore, there is no security issue about using ......etcpasswords. I should therefore be able to use relative paths. So, I also want to know how I can do that select on two databases in the same directory without typing long, long paths.
Is there a way to do queries that access multiple database files (all database files being in the exact same directory) AND use relative paths or no paths (and certainly not type a full path)?
NOTE 1: I'm using SQLEXPRESS, therefore do not have the SQL Server 2005 tools. I have Visual Studio 2005 Developer Edition with its tools.
NOTE 2: One table is accessed through ODBC. The other table is accessed through SQLEXPRESS.

Hello folks,
I am trying to set up replication between a central office and multiple sites. This will be merge repl, since either central or satellites can be modified. However, one issue I ran into is setting up subscribers. I don't always have the option of starting with a publisher's snapshot; some of the subscribers have their own data already, which may or may not overlap with central site, and which needs to be synchronized into the central site somehow.
So far, I haven't seen any solution for this kind of scenario, at least nothing out of the box. Am I doomed to having to roll out custom data transfers (I don't think I can use DTS since all sites are running Express), or is there some standard way of doing this?
Thanks so much!

Hi!
I have some questions about the MSDN article "Step by Step: Developing a SQL Mobile Application with Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005" (it is msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa454892.aspx).
Everything works good up to Exercise 3: Synchronizing Data Between Any Backend Database and SQL Mobile Database Using a Web Service. It is said that we need a DataService.asmx file to be enetered into "Web reference name". Unfortunately I can't find the HOL302_SQL_Mobile to download and install this file. Where I can find this file?
Can anyone tell me how can I do such a replication(C#)?
How can I synchronise data from mobile device to SQL Server using GPRS connection? (I only know replicating over USB).

hello,guys,
my question is :
how do I query data from the linked foxpro database?
more:
I have linked a visual foxpro server to my sql server database by using the addserver clause.
Two server is in a local network.
My linked foxpro server named 'fox'.
its datasourse is not a dbc file, but a directory of dbf files ,and its full path is d:foxpro object.
In the directory ,there are three table,'show2003.dbf','sysu.dbf','szszj.dbf'.
And the .dbf files are not in any database.
They are just three files in the same directory.
There is no dbc file.
Now I can see the table list on the right page of the linked server.
But there is something wrong with my sql clause.
sample:
select * from fox..sysu
then the message is:
server: message 7313,level 16,status 1,row 1
the appointed constructure or directory to the provider is inefficacious 'MSDASQL'
I know I may use 'openquery',or 'openrowset'.
The problem is that variable is not valid in 'openquery' and 'openrowset'.
But I must use variable.
so ,please give me some advice.
Thank you very much

Insert data to database foxpro using open query. I already create connection like below
@server = 'EXIMBIL_LINK',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@srvproduct = '',
@provstr = 'Driver={Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver}; UID=;SourceDB=D: raining_testdata;SourceType=DBF ;Exclusive=No;BackgroundFetch=Yes'
when i try to show table van with command :
select * from openquery(EXIMBIL_LINK,'select * from van')
It show query running well but when i try to insert new row to table van with command :
INSERT into OpenQuery(EXIMBIL_LINK, 'SELECT c_user_id,c_user_name,full_name from van')
VALUES('1000007668','IDMTEST2','IDMTEST2')
throws error like this : Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done
