System Drive Problem Caused By Query Against Large Table
Jun 26, 2007
Hi, all experts here,
Thank you very much for your kind attention.
It's so frustrated that I dont really knwo what is going on and why is that and I have tried ages to try to figure it out and nothing really helps.
I have already moved the data files of tempdb database to a drive with enough space (many GB space left still), but then again I got the problem which run out all of the system drive space when I run a query against a large table? Why is that? And how to figure it out?
Please help me and thanks a lot in advance for your kind advices and help and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

I have a large fact table about 500 million rows, and I am using 2008 r2, thus I am having the file system error, I have browsed online and tried all the fix , but I am still having the error . I tried taking only about year data (which was still around 200 million records) and I was still having the error.

Hi,
I found out that executing the procedure SP_INDEXOPTION and setting 'AllowRowLocks' to false i can prevent the sql server from locking rows in a table and 'AllowPageLocks' prevents from pages being locked. I need to preform same operation
in case of tables. I need to perform insertion operations concurrently and acquire required locks manually. Is there a way to stop sqlserver from acquiring locks on the table. I need to disable all the locks (row, page and table).
Thank you in advance.

Hi, all experts here,
I am wondering if tempdb stores all results tempararily whenever I query a large fact table with over 4 million records which joins another dimension table? Since each time when I run the query, the tempdb grows to nearly 1GB which nearly runs out all the space on my local system drive, as a result the performance totally down. Is there any way to fix this problem? Thanks a lot in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly for your kind advices.
With best regards,

Using ADO.Net and SQL 2005, we have an exception handler in one of our .VB classes. We extract all the information from the exception and dump the stack into an email, but we would also like to see the query that caused the exception.
Is there an easy way to get the offending query without putting a try-catch around the hundreds of queries?
Thanks.

I am having performance issues on a SQL query in Access. My query isaccessing and joining several tables (one very large one). The tables arelinked ODBC. The client submits the query to the server, separated byseveral states. It appears the query is retrieving gigs of data from thetable and processing the joins on the client. Is there away to perform moreof the work on the server there by minimizing the amount of extraneous tabledata moving across the network and improving performance (woefully slowabout 6 hours)?

Hi all,
Has anyone run into this issue before?
My company uses database mail extensively for alerting and the like, and most emails sent have attachments. We've put in place procedures for removing emails older than a month from the MSDB database, however we've now had a client server completely run out of the disk space due to attachments being stored in the C:Documents and SettingsUserLocal SettingsTemp folder!?!
When I check the sysmail_delete_mailitems_sp sproc, it only removes entries in the MSDB tables, and doesn't remove these temporary files in the temp directory.
Does anyone know why SQL Server stores them in the temp directory of the service account user, as well as how we can remove them (apart from manually deleting the files), as we need to have an automated process for cleaning up emails, and at the moment SQL Server 2005 doesn't handle this very well.
I've checked this on our test server as well, and we're getting the same there, and this server is running the latest SP2 + hot fixes.
Thanks,
Reece.

Installed SQL Server 2000 Enterprise trial a week ago on XP Pro. Installed new Seagate 80G HD; used Seagate's utility to copy old C: to new drive as new boot drive. All seems to work fine, except, when booting up, SQL server doesn't start. When I try to start it manually I get the following:
Could not start SQLSERVER service on the local computer. Error 3: the system cannot find the specified path.
1. What could be wrong?
2. How do I fix it?

Hi all,
Report:
-For instance 2 small tables (eg. width 10cm = 3 inch?)
-And one wide table (eg. width 30cm = 10 inch?)
All separated by "insert pagebreak after table".
Problem:
When rendered, the pages with the small tables on have a lot of white blank space at the right of the table. This is probably caused by the big table on page 3.
This report is distributed by email in Excell format. So on sheet 1 and 2 there are a lot of white cells on the right of the tables. When trying to print, they just want to use the "landscape" option and the "fit to page" option. Because of the empty white cells, the fit to page option reduces the first 2 tables to a very small table which covers only 50 % of the page width. The other 50 % is reserved for the empty cells.
Off course, I know that deleting the empty cells offers a solutions, but it would be a lot more handier if there were no empty cells in the first place.
Anybody with a solution?

Rename S to G, T to H and U to W. Reboot the servers. The original G, H and W will then be X, Y and Z. The old S will be the new G, old T will be H and old U will be W. I have a well-structured but also very large binary data-set that is generated by a C++ application every five minutes. The data needs to be accessed by SQL applications. Since data is generated every five minutes, performance is key, both for write and read. The data set is about 500MB.If data is written to the file system, the write performance doesn't involve SQL server. For reading it, I have a CLR to read the portions of the data that I need based on offset and length. That works and is very fast. The problem is that data is stored in the file system, so it is not self-contained within the database.
A second option that I haven't explored yet, is to write the data into a table as VARBINARY(MAX). I would read the data using SUBSTRING with appropriate offset and length. Performance of SQL write/read of binary data of this size, and whether there is a third option I haven't thought off. I'm using SQL Server 2014.

Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting here, I hope this questions has not been asked before. I tried to search for it but I came not with nothing.
Recreating the error :
I am using VS2005. I created a Pocket PC 2003 project.
I have downloaded the SQL Server Compact Edition and installed it. I get the System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll file from the installation directory.
I reference to that DLL using Add Reference in VS2005.
Build it. In the Bin folder, a long list of files suddenly appears.
System.data.dll
System.data.oracleClient.dll
system.web.dll
system.enterpriseservices.dll
system.enterpriseservices.wrapper.dll
system.transactions.dll
and the rest of your original files in Bin
The worst of it all, all of these files are deployed into the Emulator! Causing it to run out of memory and unable to deploy.
Something is not right here, I just cannot figure it out! If this happens, each mobile devices can hold one applications. Thats not the way it should be, right?
If you have solved this before, do help. I am at my wits end at the moment.
Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,
Lasker

Hey - I know that I can find space information about SQL Server. Allocated space, free space, used space, data space, etc... BUT is there a way that I can query how much total/available space is on the actual drive? For example, let's say that I have SQL installed on the D drive of a Server; i also have another application on that drive. I know that I can query how much room SQL Server is using, but can i query how much total/available space is on the drive? Any help appreciated.

Hi
I have been trying to use openrowset with a shared drive, and even though the share has "full control" permissions granted to "everyone" and the accout that SQL runs under has been granted explicit full control permissions I am unable to open the file which itself has no security on it.
Can I not use a \ path and only use mapped drives?
Thanks
below works...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:5People.xls', [Sheet1$])
below doesn't work...

In our SQL Server database we will have a table that will be populated with about 2000 recordsper day. That is 2000 records per day for 5 days per week. Currently the computer we are using has about 50 gigabytesof available hard drive space on it. We are concerned that maybe we will need a bigger hard drive, based solely on the number of records entered into this table per day. The problem is I don'tknow how to calculate how much hard drive space we need. I think I read that using varchar, sql server 2005 really optimizes a database. Here is a typical example of data in ourdatabase. I put dots on three lines between the first and last sample record to justillustrate that there are many records in between.
Basically we only need 8 months of data at a time in the table and then we can purgerecords older than 8 months. Can someone help me approximate how much hard drive space I might need for 8 months of data, given the following sample record in the database?
Sample: -->34.5 4.08 10.6 .0012
Sample Table in my DB just for illustration:
(PPsquare inch) (Diameter) (Weight gm) (coeffOfSatFriction)
34.5 4.08 10.6 .0012...21.7 3.54 6.22 .019

I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.
What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:
ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log
I get the following error message..
Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.
I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.
Has anyone run into this?
