Hi, I have several independent, system components that write audit
events to a database locally via ODBC and remotely via TCP, and I have
a requirement to audit when the database is available for modification.
First, does SQL Server have a concept of starting/stopping specific
database instances? Or does my database instance "stop" only when the
NT service MSSQLSERVER stops?
Second, Oracle has system event triggers, e.g. AFTER STARTUP, but I
can't find an equivalent in SQL Server 2000. What alternatives are
there?
Note that I can't rely on the MSSQLSERVER start/stop events in the NT
Application Event log, as the events need to be inserted "in-band" into
my database's event table.
I have an sql dependancy setup on a particular table that is not updated all that often. When I load my application that has the dependancy code in it, the onChange event of the SqlDependancy fires over and over again non stop. I am positive I am not updating the information in the table I am querying so I can not figure out why it would do that. But I bet one of you knows! If you need code I can supply it and if you need anything else let me know. Thanks in advance.
I'm looking for a sanity check. Service broker and Event Notifications are new to me, so it is possible I'm either abusing or incorrectly using the technology. I'm experimenting with using Event Notifications and Server Broker to log error messages. The process works pretty well as long as I don't do something stupid such as stressing the process by calling raiserror in a loop of a 100000 - twice. It processed for a while, but eventual either SQL Server terminates (sev 25) or I had to force the SQL service to stop by killing it's process via task manager. I could not connect to SQL Server or stop the service normally.
I have several general questions. I think they are good questions. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
1) I'm looking into generating deadlock and blocking email alerts. It appears that Event Notification is the way to go since there are very few events and I can respond to the event with an email. Is there a better method to automate blocking and deadlock email alerts that include event details?
2) If I wanted to retain some history of errors for the developers, should Event Notifications be avoided if a high number of errors can be generated by a badly formed T-SQL? Avoid TRC_ERRORS_AND_WARNINGS and USER_ERROR_MESSAGE? (I could tell the developers not to be stupid, but why would that stop them if it does not stop me?)
3) Is there a way to efficiently filter a Event Notification from entering the queue before the Receive statement is called? I get some events that I throw away after receiving them. For example, perhaps I want all events from all non-system databases without having to add a notification for each single non-system database. Or I want all errors with severity 11-17 only?
4) Is there a trick to filter out events from the procedure activated by the event. I tried using raiserror to debug a procedure without thinking. The result was that the queue never was empty because the processing produced more events to process. As a result, I don't use raiserror and use a try-catch to avoid raising errors in the procedure activated.
5) I can receive one message at a time using local variables or receive a batch of messages using a local table. Is a small batch the best way even if there is memory pressure?
6) In the activated procedure I continue processing in a loop until there are no more messages. This seems to be the most efficient. Is this always the case? Should I exit the procedure after a set number (large) of messages have been received? The procedure would activate again to continue processing?
7) Is there any point to using the MAX_QUEUE_READERS setting when processing event notifications? Should it be 1?
8) I currently get the next conversation group id and process its messages within a transaction. Is this a bad idea with event notifications? Should I just call Receive and get the next batch? I don't really care if I lose some messages if things are going badly. Should I avoid wrapping the receive in a transaction?
9) I could run a trace that starts with SQL Server; however, I think my only choice is to log to a file. Is there a way to trace to a table using SQLTrace without running profiler? I would like to automate the process and have the data in a table so that it can be easily queried and parsed for each database/team.
10) Is there a way to fix my process and handle 100000 messages a minute? Is there a way to skip messages when it gets to busy? Can the query generating the messages get throttled - perhaps along with the query designer - before the server gets into trouble? Query the memory used by a queue and drop/create the queue with a delay if there is an issue?
I'm using a single CPU test machine with only 1 GB and 2 GB pagefile and a single disk. OS: Windows 2003 R2 SP2. SQL: 9.0.3054 and on 9.0.3228 (update package 6 just came out today). I could add memory, but I think that would just permit me to queue more message before running into trouble. I'll add code shortly - length limit.
I'm thinking of building a trigger against a system table(sysobjects) in database(a) on server(a) that will assist me in updating a table in database(b)on server(b). What I need to know from table(b)is if a new table has been added and removed from database(a) on server(a). I want to use a store procedure to query the table(b). I was thinking of building a trigger against my sysobjects table that would update table(b) whenever any tables are added or removed from database(a). Has anyone built triggers against system tables? I am running SQL 7.
I only found http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=389835&SiteID=17 regarding this error message and it was of no help to me.
Background: 3rd party program that extracts users from a AD group and manage user creation i a MSSQL 2000 server. Also sends e-mails using the SMTP service. The funny thing is that the program manages everything correctly, but writes an error in the Event log as it exists (below). Job is scheduled with the SQL server agent and runs with a doamin user that has local admin rights. We have the same setup on a testserver where it runs without problems.
Windows server 2003, MDAC 2.8, SQL Server 2000 SP3, .NET framework 2 on both servers.
I'm not a developer, so I'm pretty lost why it behaves like this on one server and not the other. Checked Aspnet.config-file and they are the same. Found this
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=911816
that described that the exception handling was different between the .NET-versions, but since this works on one of the servers, it shouldn't be related, or could it? Tried changing the setting in method 2, but with the same behaviour. Any ideas?
How can we write triggers on system table dbo.sysobjects, when i tries to write a trigger, it is giving an error that permission is denied. I even give a permission of "allow modifications to system catalogs" in Enterprise manager. still it is not giving permission. How can i create a trigger on dbo.sysobjects table?
Does anyone know if it's possible to create a trigger on the sysdatabases table in the master database? I keep getting permission denied which I'm not sure is right.
Does anyone know of a way I can create a trigger on a system table (say sysdatabases in master). I know this is not supported but presumably there's a way it can be done by referencing it's equivilant in Information_schema somewhere.
I'm trying to write a script that will automatically set up a backup schedule for a database that has just been created. I was hoping the trigger would query the sysdatabases table for new database name entries, log necessary info in an audit table and then call a backup script to set up the schedule. Any ideas??
I am trying to create a stored procedure that will disable triggers on any given table. Basically I want to pass in a table name as a parameter and query the master table for all triggers that belong to that table...then disable them. I just don't know how to get a list of triggers that belong to a table?
All of a sudden none of our merge replications are working. In fact you can't even insert, update or delete and data from the tables in the merge publication. When trying that, we get an error stating:
Msg 550, Level 16, State 1, Procedure MSmerge_ins_E3F43EF8B259476099BBB194A2E1708C, Line 42 The attempted insert or update failed because the target view either specifies WITH CHECK OPTION or spans a view that specifies WITH CHECK OPTION and one or more rows resulting from the operation did not qualify under the CHECK OPTION constraint. The statement has been terminated.
Currently, the only solution I've found is to delete the publication and recreate it. I'm trying to figure out why this happened. It happened on a development server that to my knowledge, hasn't been changed in a week or so outside of changing the server's IP address. Would that cause such an error to occur?
I have recently installed a new server for a client running SBS2003 R2 with SQLServer 2005.
I noted that the backup failed the SQL Server database on the consistenty check. On checking the event log I see this message as per above.
It reads in the description
c:datalawsqldatadata41_Data.MDF:MSSQL_DBCC6:

Looking in the error log I see :

My SQL Server 2005 SP4 on Windows 2008 R2 is flooded with the below errors:-
Date  10/25/2011 10:55:46 AM Log  SQL Server (Current - 10/25/2011 10:55:00 AM) Source  spid Message Event Tracing for Windows failed to send an event. Send failures with the same error code may not be reported in the future. Error ID: 0, Event class ID: 54, Cause: (null).  Is there a way I can trace it how it is coming? When I check input buffer for these ids, it looks like it is tracing everything. All the general application DMLs are coming in these spids.
I have been testing with the WMI Event Watcher Task, so that I can identify a change to a file. The WQL is thus:
SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent within 30 WHERE targetinstance isa 'CIM_DataFile' AND targetinstance.name = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\AdventureWorks.bak'
This polls every 30 secs and in the SSIS Event (ActionAtEvent in the WMI Task is set to fire the SSIS Event) I have a simple script task that runs a message box).
My understanding is that the event polls every 30 s and if there is a change on the AdventureWorks.bak file then the event is triggered and the script task will run producing the message. However, when I run the package the message is occurring every 30s, meaning the event is continually firing even though there has been NO change to the AdventureWorks.bak file.
Am I correct in my understanding of how this should work and if so why is the event firing when it should not ?
Server 2003 SE SP1 5.2.3790 Sql Server 2000, SP 4, 8.00.2187 (latest hotfix rollup) We fixed one issue, but it brought up another. the fix we applied stopped the ServicesActive access failure, but now we have a failure on MSSEARCH. The users this is affecting do NOT have admin rights on the machine, they are SQL developers. We were having

We recently upgraded to SQL 2005 from SQL 2000. We have most of our issues ironed out however about every 1 minute there is a message in the Application Event log and the SQL log that states:
EVENT ID 18456 Login Failed for the users DOMAIN/ACCOUNT [CLIENT: <local machine>]
This is a state 16 message which I thought meant that the account does not have access to the default database. The account is actually the account that the SQL services run under.
Any ideas? We can't seem to figure this one out. We actually upgraded to 2005 from 2000 and had an error appear after every reboot that prevented the SQL Agent from running(This application has failed to start because GAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.) We did a full uninstall of SQL and reinstalled fresh and restored the databases from .bak files and that is when the EVENT ID 18546 started occuring every minute.
We don't have any SQL heavy hitters here so please be detailed with any possible solutions. That you very much for any help you can provide!
This isn€™t an problem as such, it€™s more of a debate.
If a table needs a number of update triggers which do differing tasks, should these triggers be separated out or encapsulated into one all encompassing trigger. Speaking in terms of performance, it doesn€™t make much of an improvement doing either depending upon the tasks performed. I was wondering in terms of maintenance and best practice etc. My view is that if the triggers do totally differing tasks they should be a trigger each on their own.
I have created a windows library control that accesses a local sql database
I tried the following strings for connecting
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=localhostSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TimeSheet;Trusted_Connection = true"
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=localhostSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TimeSheet;Integrated Security=SSPI"
I am not running the webpage in a virtual directory but in
C:Inetpubwwwrootusercontrol
and I have a simple index.html that tries to read from an sql db but throws
the error

when i go to http://servername/reports , the UIlogon.aspx page loads fine and i enter username and password. but i get logon failed.
when i go to http://servername/reportserver , the logon.aspx does not load and i get the following error message :

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :
SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning) Messages * SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility
* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.
Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects, and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I'd prefer to determine this info with systemstored procs (ie sp_help, sp_helptex, sp_...etc) but will dip into thesystem tables if needed. Thanks,Dave
